Best For
- Fast material response time
- Excellent edge support
- Long 365-night trial period—200 nights longer than average
Considerations
- Higher levels of motion transfer
- Some heat retention issues
- Pressure relief is good, but certainly not great
Our Verdict
The Octave Vista is a 12″ foam mattress designed as the base tier within the Octave mattress collection. This mattress hits a low price point (only C$899 for a queen), which can make it a great option for sleepers on a budget, saving 43% compared to the average foam mattress.
Price aside, the Vista was a good mattress, but far from amazing. This mattress scores in the bottom 26% of all mattresses tested to date. It has some advantages like fast material response time and exceptional edge support, but also some real disadvantages like mediocre cooling, higher levels of motion transfer, and pressure relief issues.
If you absolutely can’t spend more, the Vista could still get the job done, but I think in most cases I’d recommend opting for Octave Mirage (one price tier above the Vista) for better performance.

How is the Octave Vista Different?
The Octave Vista has a performance score that is slightly below average, but a price that is significantly less than average as well—43% less than the average foam mattress.
Advantages
Advantages to the Vista include slightly faster material response time, better edge support, and a long trial period (200 nights longer than average).
The price may also be a notable advantage for sleepers on a budget.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has 25% less sinkage than average as well as 25% less bounce. Both sinkage and bounce are a bit more preferential to each sleeper and not necessarily a “good vs. bad” kind of factor. Still, these neutral factors are worth considering.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages to the Octave Vista include worse cooling performance, slightly more motion transfer, and lower bounce leading to worse sex performance. Off-gassing is also longer than average, but only by a few days.

Cooling Test
The Octave Vista has good, but not great cooling performance. During our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of heat retention around my body. The Octave Vista is notably warmer than the more expensive Octave Mirage and Octave Horizon mattresses.
Baseline Temp.
83.1° F
Max Temp.
91.2° F
Ending Temp.
84.4° F
While all 3 models include cooling fibers within the cover, the quantity of those fibers is far less in the Vista compared to the Horizon and Mirage.
During our tests, there was a noticeable coolness to the cover on the Horizon and Mirage, but there was none of that cooling effect on the Vista.
All 3 mattresses also include a phase change material coating in the center third of the mattress, but the thickness of the coating appears to be notably less than the Horizon and Mirage.
This is likely having a negative impact on the cooling performance.
Max Temp.
Ending Temp
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
When we look at the basic material design of the Octave Vista it isn’t hard to see why we see more cooling issues here. We have an all-foam design that doesn’t have much in the way of cooling materials, fibers, coatings, or design elements that can help improve cooling.
In our objective testing, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.2° F, which is 1.75° warmer than the average (based on all of our tests to date).
Minute-by-minute heat dissipation was also worse than average. From minutes 0 to 1 the decline was 3.4°, which is 1.11° warmer than average.
From minutes 0 to 5 the decline was 6.8°, which is 0.11° warmer than average.
Heat Dissipation Over Time
All things considered, the cooling performance on the Octave Vista is good, but still leaves something to be desired.
Sinkage Test
The Octave Vista has a very minimal level of sinkage. In our pressure point sinkage tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 1.64”. This is 0.54” less sinkage than the average of 2.18”.
Sinkage Depth
1.64″
Sinkage Feel
Very Minimal
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.
While the mattress does create a notable level of body contouring hug, it isn’t nearly as dramatic as the contour on the Octave Horizon and Mirage. The body just doesn’t sink down as deeply.
As a result, the hug is far more restrained. The thinner overall mattress thickness, thinner comfort layer, and reduced sinkage are all having a negative impact on pressure relief as well.
Motion Transfer Test
The Octave Vista has a low level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 8.78 m/s². This is 5.3% more motion transfer than the average of 8.34 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
3.90 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-4.88 m/s²
Accel. Range
8.78 m/s²
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest motion from 0 to 0.14 seconds. Motion drops notably by 0.21 seconds and returns to near-zero levels by 0.56 seconds.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
While this isn’t the absolute lowest motion we’ve seen, it’s not bad by any stretch. The spikes are relatively low and the motion duration is minimal. Most sleepers will find this level of motion transfer to be more than sufficient.
Response Test
The Octave Vista is a bit of a mixed bag with respect to material responsiveness. The Vista was able to mostly recover back to shape within 0.3 seconds, which is extremely fast and 0.11 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.3 sec.
Complete Recovery
1.0 sec.
However, the full material recovery was 1.0 seconds, which is slightly worse than the average of 0.84 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
For most sleepers, the speedy mostly recovered response time will be more than fast enough to prevent any type of a stuck feeling and ensure ease of movement. However, given that a full material recovery does take 1.0 seconds I could see more sensitive sleepers being unsatisfied by the less-than-instant responsiveness.
Bounce Test
The Octave Vista has a low level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 7.26”. This is 2.36” less bounce than the average of 9.62”.
Max. Depth
4.55″
Max. Rebound
2.71″
Total Bounce
7.26″
The all-foam design of the Vista absorbs much of the energy, which translates to a lower level of bounce. The more restrained bounce also makes it more difficult to move around on the mattress relative to mattresses with more bounce.
Max. Sinkage Depth
Max Bounce Height
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
In general, I like to see 8-12” of total bounce height. It’s a sweet spot that maximizes sex and ease of movement while minimizing motion. The Octave Vista is slightly below what I like to see.
As with response, I could see more sensitive sleepers being unsatisfied with the level of performance here. However, a majority of sleepers are likely to find bounce to be a non-issue.
Edge Support Test
The Octave Vista has exceptional edge support while sitting and excellent lying edge support. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured 2.75” of sitting edge compression.
Max Sinkage
2.75″
Lying Support
Excellent
This is 1.39” less edge compression than the average of 4.14”. Anything less than 4.0” is great and the Vista easily exceeded that mark. Even when sitting directly on the edge I still felt well-supported and there was no material collapse.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.
Sitting, 200 lbs.
Edge support while lying is nearly as good. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions even when lying directly on the edge.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.
Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.
Edge support performance was a bit surprising given the all-foam design and absence of edge reinforcement foam. Nevertheless, the numbers don’t lie and the Vista did great when it came to edge support.
Sex Test
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 60% | 9.3 | Low |
Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Exceptional |
Noise | 10% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Very Good |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Very Good |
For the Octave Vista, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.5.
This mattress has low levels of bounce which is worth 60% of the sex score.
A low bounce can easily tank a mattress’s sex score. But in the case of the Octave Vista, scores for other factors like edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling remain high.
Comparing over 178+ mattresses tested to date, the average sex score is 9.6 so the Vista is slightly below average, but not by much.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on the Octave Vista is good, but far from great. In our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of pressure point build-up.
Comfort Layer
4.0″
Support Layer
8.0″
The pressure was mostly isolated to my shoulders and upper back. I was quite surprised at the comfort dynamic, as the pressure relief performance on the Octave Mirage and Octave Horizon was exceptionally good.
We see many of the same materials between the three models. However, there is notably less comfort material on the Vista compared to the other two models.
The Vista has a 4.0” comfort layer compared to a 6.0” comfort layer on the Mirage and an 8.0” layer on the Horizon.
For most mattresses, 4.0” of comfort material is more than sufficient to create great pressure relief. However, the combination of these materials resulted in a comfort dynamic that was good and yet, left something to be desired.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing is strong on the Octave Vista. It took 7 days to fully off-gas after being opened.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
7 days
Compared to the 4.3-day off-gassing average, the Vista is a little worse than average.
Despite the fact that the smell lasted for a solid week, the odor was noticeably less offensive than the “wet paint” type of smell noted on the Octave Mirage and Horizon, two higher-end mattress options offered by Octave.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 25% | 10 | 365 nights |
Warranty | 25% | 10 | 15 years |
Shipping | 25% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 25% | 10 | $0 |
Country of Origin | 0% | Canada |
For Octave, these individual terms and conditions generated a company score of 10 out of 10.
As a company, this is really the best we can ask for. Octave offers a 365-night trial period, which is 200 nights longer than the 165-night average we have seen (considering trial periods of over 175+ mattresses tested to date).
They also offer a 15-year warranty. While 27% of mattresses offer a lifetime warranty, the other 73% have a 14-year warranty average. Compared to the 14-year warranty, Octave offers 1 extra year of coverage.
Shipping is free and returns are free as well.
Currently, the Octave Vista is only available in Canada.
How firm is the Octave Vista?
The Octave Vista has a medium-firm feel, with a firmness of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Octave Vista has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress uses 8.0” of support materials, 4.0” of comfort material, and a 12” total profile.
Based on all of our mattress tests to date, we see an average 7.7” support layer, 4.2” comfort layer, and 11.9” total profile. As a result, Vista’s material design and layer thicknesses are essentially average.
In most cases, a thicker mattress is able to create better support compared to a thinner mattress. And that is true of the Vista. My biggest support concern is more of a pressure relief concern.
Given the less-than-great pressure relief performance, it’s possible that support could be negatively impacted for some sleepers.
Even so, from a strictly support perspective, there is nothing that overly worries me about the Vista.
We have a robust support layer, thick total profile, and high-quality foam layers here. For most sleepers, support will be more than sufficient.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Design
The Octave Vista is a 12″ foam hybrid designed as the base-level mattress in the Octave collection. It is the most budget-friendly while still trying to have good performance.
Type
Foam
Thickness
12″
Firmness
6
This mattress has a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness is suitable for a wide range of sleepers, being firm enough to support heavier sleepers while also being soft enough to provide pressure relief for lighter sleepers.
Materials
Compared to the Octave Mirage and Octave Horizon, two higher-end mattresses within the same collection, the Vista has the thinnest profile and is only made of three layers. From top to bottom, the layers include:
- 2.0″ memory foam
- 2.0″ poly foam
- 8.0″ support foam
The Cover
The cover of the Vista is thin and breathable, infused with cooling fibers and has a cool-to-the-touch feel. This cover is similar to the one used on the Octave Horizon and Mirage (however, with significantly fewer cooling fibers).
As an added bonus, the cover has a zipper closure, making it easy to remove for easy cleaning. The whole cover is machine washable in any standard washing machine.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is made of two foams—a top layer of 2.0″ memory foam as well as a 2.0″ poly foam layer. The top layer of memory foam provides good contour when sleepers sit or lie on the mattress.
The second layer is a 2.0″ poly foam, designed as a transitional layer between the memory foam and the support foam below.
The Support Layer
The support layer at the base of the mattress is an 8.0″ thick high-density support foam. It is a 5-zoned system with air channels for air to escape.
The channels also improve material response time and help to support sleepers where they need it most.
Product Evolution
The Octave Vista mattress was launched in August 2023, along with 2 sister mattresses, the Octave Mirage and the Octave Horizon. Since the release of these three mattresses, there have been no notable changes.

For Value
Douglas
9.73 Overall Score
The Douglas is a competitive all-foam, Canadian-based mattress. It has higher performance than the Octave Vista, while also having a lower price point. If you’re looking for a balanced feel with better pressure relief, the Douglas all-foam mattress is a good option.
For Pressure Relief
GhostBed Classic
9.53 Overall Score
The GhostBed Classic is an 11″ all-foam mattress that uses a combination of latex and memory foam. GhostBed offers better motion transfer restraint as well as better pressure relief, despite having a thinner mattress height.
For High Bounce
Endy Original
9.59 Overall Score
The Endy mattress skips the memory foam and uses poly foam instead. This mattress is only 10″ thick so it might not be the best option for heavier sleepers. But it also offers some pricing advantages, priced at only C$895 for a queen. Also, the Endy has very high bounce (12.45″) compared to the lower bounce on the Vista (7.26″).
