Best For
- Great cooling performance
- Exceptional pressure relief
- Good for low levels of bounce
Considerations
- Less-than-ideal edge support
- Slightly higher levels of motion transfer than average
Our Verdict
The Octave Horizon is an all-foam mattress that is 14″ thick and marks the top tier within the Octave collection. It has good performance all around with a cool-to-the-touch cover, fast material response time, and great pressure relief.
Motion transfer and edge support could have been better and the mattress also has lower levels of bounce, which hurts the sex score. Despite being priced higher, the Horizon actually has a lower overall score than the more affordable Octave Mirage (9.75), mostly due to edge support differences.
Currently the Octave Horizon is only available in Canada.

Cooling Test
The Octave Horizon has excellent cooling. In our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
82.8° F
Max Temp.
89.2° F
Ending Temp.
83.5° F
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Generally, all foam mattresses tend to struggle more with cooling.
Max Temp.
Ending Temp
However, the Octave has a number of material advantages that help release heat and maintain a cooler feel including a cooling fiber cover, copper memory foam, phase change material coating on the top layer of foam, aerated latex, gel foam, and convoluted foam.
Each of these materials by themselves isn’t a miracle worker. However, together they make a collective and notable difference with respect to cooling performance.
In our objective testing, we measured minute-by-minute heat dissipation that wasn’t particularly amazing. However, the max surface level temperature was 0.25° cooler than average.
Heat Dissipation Over Time
Heat dissipation isn’t as much of an issue when the mattress resists heat retention to begin with. Overall, I’m happy with the level of cooling performance on the Octave Horizon.
Sinkage Test
The Octave Horizon has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.04”. This is 0.14” less sinkage than the average of 2.18”.
Sinkage Depth
2.04″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
The Horizon creates a dramatic and exacting body-contouring hug. While the mattress does use latex and poly foam, in addition to memory foam, it has a more noted memory foam feel than anything else.
The foams wrap around the body to create hug and pressure relief.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.
While the pressure point sinkage depth is more modest, sinkage under my midsection was more significant due to the extra weight. Sleepers will need to prefer a significant body contouring hug to be comfortable on the Octave Horizon.
Motion Transfer Test
The Octave Horizon has a low level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 9.00 m/s². This is 7.9% more motion than the average motion transfer of 8.34 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
4.28 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-4.72 m/s²
Accel. Range
9.00 m/s²
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
The all-foam design, thin cover, and memory foam feel all work together to absorb energy and reduce motion.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest motion from 0 to 0.13 seconds. Motion drops significantly by 0.20 seconds and returns to near zero levels by 0.63 seconds.
Mattresses with the lowest motion are able to return to near-zero levels within 0.3 seconds. The Horizon isn’t quite to the level, but it’s not far off. By 0.20 seconds we have reached motion levels that won’t sleepers won’t be bothered by.
Response Test
The Octave Horizon has extremely fast material responsiveness. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.6 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.6 sec.
Based on all of our mattress tests to date, we have measured an average mostly recovered time of 0.41 seconds and an average fully recovered response time of 0.84 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The Octave Horizon is significantly faster than average in most measurement categories. The fast response ensures you’ll never feel stuck on the mattress and helps make the mattress easier to move around on.
While it’s not quite as fast as many coil or latex mattresses, the mostly recovered time of 0.2 seconds keeps it quick enough to be a non-issue for most sleepers.
Bounce Test
The Octave Horizon has a total bounce height of 6.66”. This is 2.96” less bounce than the average of 9.62”. The all-foam design and memory foam comfort layer absorb and reduce much of the energy, suppressing the bounce.
Max. Depth
5.62″
Max. Rebound
1.04″
Total Bounce
6.66″
The lower bounce helps ensure motion transfer is kept in check. However, it also has a negative impact on sex performance.
Max. Sinkage Depth
Max Bounce Height
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
At 6.66” the Horizon is well below my ideal bounce range of 8-12”.
The lower bounce also makes it a bit harder to move around on the mattress, relative to mattresses with more bounce.
Edge Support Test
The Octave Horizon is a bit of a mixed bag for edge support. Sitting edge support is good, but far from great. However, lying edge support is excellent.
Max Sinkage
4.50″
Lying Support
Excellent
In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.5”. This is 0.36” more sitting compression than the average of 4.14”.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.
Sitting, 200 lbs.
If there is a silver lining for sitting edge support it’s the fact that the total mattress thickness is 14”. With a thicker profile, you can allow a deeper sitting compression without collapsing the edge.
Even so, I would have liked to have seen sitting compression at 4.0” or less.
While sitting edge support left something to be desired I was extremely pleased with the level of lying edge support.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.
Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.
In our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. Lying edge support was notably better than the Octave Mirage.
The mattress gives a good balance of pushback and comfort, even at the absolute edge, such that you can still lie on the edge and feel supported.
Sex Test
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 60% | 9.2 | Low |
Edge Support | 20% | 9.3 | Very Good |
Noise | 10% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Exceptional |
Cooling | 5% | 9.5 | Excellent |
For the Octave Horizon, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.4.
The sex score for the Horizon isn’t especially impressive mainly due to its struggles with low bounce and less-than-best edge support.
These two factors make up 80% of the sex score and charting lower numbers like 9.2 and 9.3 just aren’t going to cut it to achieve a higher sex score.
Aside from these two factors, the mattress had minimal noise, exceptional pressure relief, and excellent cooling.
Pressure Relief Test
The Octave Horizon has exceptionally good pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no pressure points build up anywhere on my body.
Comfort Layer
8.0″
Support Layer
6.0″
The mattress is just a delight to lie on. It reminds me a good deal of the mattress I sleep on for personal use each night, the Loom and Leaf.
Both mattresses have a medium 5 out of 10 firmness feel and a super thick comfort layer that creates an incredible level of comfort.
The Octave Horizon has an 8.0” thick comfort layer. On average, we see a comfort layer of 4.2” thick (based on all of our mattress tests to date).
Needless to say, the Horizon is significantly more than the average. That extra foam material is able to distribute the weight of sleepers, easing sleepers into the support material, relieving pressure, and cradling the body. Overall, fantastic pressure relief performance.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Octave Horizon was strong right out of the box. The odor took 6 days to fully off-gas.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
6 days
Compared to the average off-gassing period of 4.3 days, the Horizon was slightly beyond average.
The smell itself mimicked the smell of wet paint, not really a desirable smell, but also not something that affects the mattress long term.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 25% | 10 | 365 nights |
Warranty | 25% | 10 | 15 years |
Shipping | 25% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 25% | 10 | $0 |
Country of Origin | 0% | Canada |
For Octave, these individual terms and conditions generated a company score of 10 out of 10.
As a company, this is really the best we can ask for. Octave offers a 365-night trial period, which is 200 nights longer than the 165-night average we have seen (considering trial periods of over 175+ mattresses tested to date).
They also offer a 15-year warranty. While 27% of mattresses offer a lifetime warranty, the other 73% have a 14-year warranty average. Compared to the 14-year warranty, Octave offers 1 extra year of coverage.
Shipping and returns are both free.
How firm is the Octave Horizon?
The Octave Horizon has a medium feel with a firmness of 5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
This firmness is slightly softer than the popular medium-firm feel, which is a 6 out of 10. Still, the Horizon is a good pick for sleepers looking for support with a little more softness to it.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Octave Horizon has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress has a 6.0” thick support layer.
While this single layer is a good bit less than the average 7.7” thick support layer (based on all of our mattress tests to date), when it is considered in combination with the 8.0” comfort layer it’s more than enough foam to create plenty of support.
The average mattress height based on all of our tests to date is 11.9”. While thicker isn’t always better, in most cases, it is. The Octave Horizon uses high-quality foams at every single level of the mattress with a total profile height of 14”.
Honestly, when I look at the material quality we have here, in addition to the sheer quantity of material, I am unsure how they were able to hit this price point. It’s an impressive value for the money and the Horizon delivers fantastic support.

Design
The Octave Horizon is an all-foam mattress with a 14″ thickness and a medium feel (5 out of 10 on the firmness scale).
Type
Foam
Thickness
14″
Firmness
5
This mattress was designed as the top-tier option within the Octave collection. It outperforms the Octave Vista, their base-level foam mattress by nearly half a point.
Materials
The Octave Horizon mattress is 14″ thick with all-foam construction. It has 5 distinct layers, each with varying densities and thickness. From top to bottom, the layers include:
- 2.5″ memory foam
- 1.5″ latex foam
- 2.0″ gel foam
- 2.0″ poly foam
- 6.0″ support foam
The Cover
The cover of the Octave Horizon is a thin cooling cover that has a cool-to-the-touch feel. There is a contrasting blue band that separates the top of the cover from the dark blue base of the cover.
The Comfort Layer
Below the cover is the Horizon’s comfort layer. The comfort layers include a 2.5″ memory foam, a 1.5″ aerated latex foam, and 2.0″ gel foam. The combination of these distinctly different layers produces a balanced feel.
The Support Layer
The support layer contains two foams—a 2.0″ poly foam and a 6.0″ convoluted support foam. These two layers work together to create both transitional and foundational support for the mattress.
Furthermore, the support layer has five different pressure relief zones. This allows for varying pressure depending on how you’re lying on the mattress.
Support is greater at the middle of the mattress where there is more pressure and the zones at the head or foot of the mattress are designed for less pressure.
Product Evolution
The Octave Horizon mattress was launched in August 2023. Since its release, there have been no notable changes to the mattress.
Other Mattresses to Consider

For Performance
Douglas Summit
9.84 Overall Score
The Douglas Summit is a competitive all-foam, Canadian-based mattress. In our performance tests, this mattress had fantastic scores, out-performing or tying with the Horizon in every single category we tested for. It skips the memory foam, but lacks nothing in performance.
For Motion Transfer
GhostBed Luxe
9.68 Overall Score
The GhostBed Luxe mattress has a 4″ comfort layer with memory foam and poly foam. Compared to the Horizon mattress, the GhostBed has much lower levels of motion transfer as well as better edge support. These two factors alone give it an edge over the Horizon mattress and overall better performance. That said, it’s also more expensive.
For Savings
Endy Original
9.59 Overall Score
The Endy mattress is another all-foam pick that uses poly foam and support foam. This mattress is only 10″ thick so it might not be the best option for heavier sleepers. But it also offers some pricing advantages, priced at only C$895 for a queen. This is a savings of over C$600.
