Best For
- Very fast material response time
- Good edge support
- Outstanding pressure relief
Considerations
- Higher levels of motion transfer, 12% more motion than average
- Sex is good, but is limited due to lower bounce levels
Our Verdict
The Octave Mirage is a Canadian-made 13″ all-foam mattress with a balanced feel and special attention given to cooling. It incorporates copper-infused foam, cooling fibers within the cover, phase change spray, and convoluted layers—all of which contribute to its excellent cooling performance.
The Mirage has somewhat minimal sinkage and moderately low bounce. Combined with its 6 out of 10 firmness this means it has a moderate yet comfortable memory foam feel.
It is the highest-performing Octave mattress based on our tests, scoring in the top 26% of all mattresses tested to date, while also having a price that is 23% below the average foam mattress. Given the performance and material quality, this is a mattress we would normally expect to be $300-$600 more expensive.
The Mirage is the mid-tier mattress within the Octave collection, striking a nice balance between budget and performance. The Octave Mirage is an exceptionally good value. Currently, the Octave Mirage is only available within Canada.

How is the Octave Mirage Different?
The Octave Mirage has better overall performance than average (based on all of our tests to date) and also a lower price tag—a savings of 8% compared to the average foam mattress.

Advantages
Looking at specific testing categories, we saw advantages regarding better cooling performance, slightly faster material response time, as well as better edge support than average.
The Mirage is 1.1″ thicker than the average foam mattress and with 1.8″ thicker comfort layer. Both of these factors can be hugely advantageous for pressure relief.
Neutral Factors
The mattress has 10% less sinkage than average as well as 20% less bounce. These two factors are more preferential factors than strictly good vs. bad. Still, depending on what you’re looking for in a mattress, they could certainly come into play.
Disadvantages
The only category that scored below average was motion transfer where we measured levels that were 12% higher than the average mattress (comparing 175+ mattresses tested to date).
Cooling Test
Cooling performance of the Octave Mirage is excellent. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
82.9° F
Max Temp.
91.6° F
Ending Temp.
88.6° F
Like the more expensive Octave Horizon, the Octave Mirage is packed with materials that assist in airflow or reducing heat retention. You can find our Octave Horizon vs. Mirage vs. Vista comparison here.
The Mirage is equipped with copper-infused foam, cooling fibers within the cover, phase change spray on coating on the top layer of foam, and convoluted foam layers.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Any of these single material choices alone wouldn’t be enough to push the cooling to this level. However, together they collectively have a significant impact on cooling performance. It’s quite difficult for an all-foam mattress to hit 9.5 on our score, but the Mirage manages it.
Both the Octave Mirage and Octave Horizon are similar with respect to cooling performance.
All that to say, the cooling performance on the Mirage isn’t a miracle worker. It’s extremely solid, but it won’t be at the level of many high-performance hybrid mattresses.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

Even so, for most I expect the cooling performance will be more than sufficient.
Sinkage Test
The Octave Mirage has a minimal level of sinkage. In our pressure point sinkage tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 1.94”. This is 0.21” less sinkage than the average of 2.15”.
Sinkage Depth
1.94″
Sinkage Feel
Minimal
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a dramatic and exacting body-contouring hug. However, because the depth of sinkage is more restrained the hug doesn’t lead to an excessive “stuck” feeling.
The mattress remains easy to move around on. Nevertheless, it does have more of a memory foam feel in that way that it wraps to your unique body shape.
Motion Transfer Test
The Octave Mirage has a low level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 9.39 m/s². This is 6.8% more motion than the average of 8.79 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
4.01 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-5.38 m/s²
Accel. Range
9.39 m/s²
While the all-foam design does help to reduce bounce and constrain motion, it isn’t the absolute best we’ve seen. The minimal level of sinkage and more responsive foams return a modest level of energy, leading to higher levels of motion.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
Looking at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest motion spikes from 0 to 0.14 seconds. By 0.21 seconds motion has declined significantly and by 0.57 seconds we return to near-zero levels of energy.

Certainly, the motion spikes aren’t incredible, however, the motion duration is quite minimal. Even the mattresses with the lowest motion take around 0.3 seconds to return to near-zero energy levels.
Octave Mirage isn’t quite there, but it’s not far off either. All that to say, I don’t expect most sleepers will find this level of motion to be a problem.
Response Test
The Octave Mirage has a very fast material response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response of 0.3 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.9 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.3 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.9 sec.
At these speeds the mattress is 0.11 seconds faster than average to mostly recover and 0.06 seconds slower than average to fully recover.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
While we certainly would like to see a faster total material recovery, at 0.9 seconds for a complete recovery I am not overly concerned. The majority of the mattress materials are highly responsive.
This responsive feel makes the mattress easier to move around on and prevents any type of stuck feeling.
Bounce Test
The Octave Mirage has a moderate level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 7.61”. This is 1.90” less bounce than the average of 9.51”.
Max. Depth
4.96″
Max. Rebound
2.65″
Total Bounce
7.61″
The all-foam design and memory foam comfort layer absorb much of the bounce energy. As a result, bounce is restrained.
Ideally, we like to see 8-12” of total bounce height. Mirage is a little below that, but nothing extreme.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
However, the lower bounce does negatively impact sex performance and makes it relatively more difficult to move around on the mattress compared to mattresses with more bounce, like coil, hybrid, and latex mattresses.
Edge Support Test
Edge support on the Octave Mirage is a mixed bag. Sitting edge support was outstanding, however, lying edge support left something to be desired.
In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.0”. This is 1.04” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.04”.
Max Sinkage
3.00″
Lying Support
Fair
Anything 4.0” or less is great. Mirage easily exceeded that benchmark. Even when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress it maintains its shape and I felt well supported.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was good, but certainly not amazing. The mattress creates such a dramatic body contouring hug that the edge feels like we’re losing some measure of support.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

While lying on the edge I did not feel as well supported as I do when I’m more centrally located on the mattress. Most sleepers will likely need to move a few inches away from the absolute edge to feel fully supported.
Sex Test
The Octave Mirage has good sex performance, but its also a little below average.
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 7.2 | Moderate |
Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Outstanding |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
For the Octave Mirage, these individual factors generated a good sex score. But it’s certainly not the best that we’ve seen.

Bounce makes up 60% of the sex score and levels are low on the Mirage. This is the only factor that separates this mattress from a nearly flawless sex score.
Had there been higher levels of bounce, the overall sex score would have undoubtedly been higher.
In addition to bounce, the Mirage had exceptional edge support, minimal noise, and great pressure relief and cooling. All of these factors help round out the Mirage, but none can completely offset the damage that low bounce does to the degrade your dance without pants.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on the Octave Mirage is outstanding. During our tests, I felt no pressure point build-up anywhere on my body. Quite to the contrary, the mattress is incredibly comfortable.
Comfort Layer
6.0″
Support Layer
7.0″
It takes a moment or two for the mattress to fully contour to the body, but once it does it creates an incredible level of comfort and pressure relief. It’s fully supportive without creating excessive pressure or firmness anywhere along my body.

The mattress uses 6.0” of comfort material. This is 1.8” more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.2”, based on all of our tests to date.
At this price point I would expect a comfort layer of 4.0” at most. To see 6.0” was surprising to say the least, especially with foams at this quality level. We have a 2.5” copper memory foam sprayed with phase change material, 1.5” of latex, 2.0” responsive poly foam.
The material quality and pressure relief performance that it’s able to deliver is truly exceptional, both in general, but especially at this price point.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Octave Mirage was strong out of the box and the odor lasted for 6 full days.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
6 days
Compared to the average off-gassing period of 6.45 days, the Octave is just a bit shorter. The odor itself smelled like wet paint, which is actually not that uncommon for some foam mattresses.
Still, if you’re sensitive to strong smells, this may be a more important factor to you. In most cases, off-gassing does not have long-term effects on the mattress.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 10 | 365 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 15 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Country of Origin | 0% | Canada |
For Octave, these individual terms and conditions generated an excellent company score.
As a company, this is really the best we can ask for. Octave offers a 365-night trial period, which is 200 nights longer than the 165-night average we have seen (considering trial periods of over 175+ mattresses tested to date).

They also offer a 15-year warranty. While 27% of mattresses offer a lifetime warranty, the other 73% have a 14-year warranty average. Compared to the 14-year warranty, Octave offers 1 extra year of coverage.
Shipping and returns are both free.
How firm is the Octave Mirage?
The Octave Mirage has a medium firm feel, a firmness of 6 out of 10 (where 10 is the most firm).

Support & Sleeping Positions
The Octave Mirage has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.
The mattress checks the major boxes I look for, including a robust total thickness (13.0”), thick comfort layer (6.0”), and thick enough support foam (7.0”). Based on all of our tests to date we see mattresses have a total height of 11.9”, with a 4.2” comfort layer and a 7.7” support layer.

While the support layer of the Mirage is a little south of average, the 1.8” thicker than average comfort layer, including the 2.0” poly foam just above the support foam, creates more than enough support for the mattress.
With so much comfort material it’s able to create an even and easy supportive transition into the firmer 7.0” support foam.
Check out the table below to see who may be well suited to this mattress.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Overall, I don’t have anything negative to say here. The mattress creates ample support during our tests and I expect most will find it fully supportive.
Design
The Octave Mirage mattress is designed as the mid-tier pick within the Octave collection. It is nicer than the Octave Vista, but also less expensive than the Octave Horizon. Nevertheless, in our objective tests we found it to be the highest scoring of all 3 Octave mattresses.
Type
Foam
Thickness
13″
Firmness

Materials
This mattress is 13″ thick and made of four different layers of foam. This is 1.0″ thinner than the Octave Horizon mattress. From top to bottom, the layers include:
- 2.5″ memory foam
- 1.5″ latex foam
- 2.0″ poly foam
- 7.0″ support foam

The Cover
The cover of the Mirage mattress is a thin cooling cover that mimics the look and feel of the cover on the Vista and Horizon mattresses (also by Octave). It is cool to the touch and designed with embedded cooling fibers.

In addition, the cover also has a zipper, which makes the cover removable. I was genuinely impressed with the the cover, which was both easy to remove and put back on. The zipper is high quality, slides easily, and didn’t hang anywhere along the track.
The top of the cover is white and light blue with a breathable design, while the base of the cover is dark blue and more durable.
The Comfort Layer
Beneath the cover is the comfort layer, made up of two layers of foam, a 2.5″ memory foam followed by a 1.5″ latex foam.
The memory foam has a phase-change spray in the central (the green section of foam in the middle) part of the material which helps the layer to remain cool.

The 1.5″ latex is aerated, which promotes breathability, and also a fast material response time.
The Support Layer
The support layer at the base of the mattress contains two foam layers. There is a 2.0″ poly foam as well as a 7.0″ high-density support foam. These two materials work together to provide support as sleepers engage with deeper layers on the mattress.

Product Evolution
The Octave Mirage mattress was launched in August 2023, along with 2 sister mattresses, the Octave Vista and the Octave Horizon. Since the release of these three mattresses, there have been no notable changes

For Value

Douglas
9.02 Overall Score
The Douglas is a competitive all-foam, Canadian-based mattress. It has well-rounded scores across the board, but especially impressive are the low levels of motion transfer and excellent pressure relief. The Douglas is only a 10″ mattress, compared to the 13″ Mirage, but performance is still exceptional.
For Memory Foam

GhostBed Luxe
9.19 Overall Score
The GhostBed Luxe mattress has a 4″ comfort layer with memory foam and poly foam. Compared to the Mirage mattress, the GhostBed has much lower levels of motion transfer as well as better edge support. If you’re looking for that memory foam feel, the GhostBed Luxe may be a better pick for you.
For Savings

Endy Original
8.98 Overall Score
The Endy mattress is another all-foam pick that uses poly foam and support foam. This mattress is only 10″ thick so it might not be the best option for heavier weight sleepers. But it also offers some pricing advantages, priced at only C$895 for a queen. This is a savings of over C$300.
