Considerations
- Extremely high motion transfer—the most of any mattress we’ve tested to date
- Very deep sinkage at 2.89”, not ideal for heavyweight sleepers
Our Verdict
The Naturpedic Chorus mattress is a 10″ thick coil-on-coil mattress that includes organic cotton and organic wool as well. It skips flame retardants, glues / adhesives, as well as polyurethane foams.
It has very deep sinkage and high bounce offering better contouring around the body.
It comes in a single firmness of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm, giving it a medium-firm feel. This makes it a good choice for sleepers of all body weights and sleeping positions.
The Naturepedic Chorus received an overall score of 7.85, placing it in the bottom 13% of all mattresses we’ve tested to date. Compared to other coil mattresses, the Chorus is in the top 22%.
For a queen, the mattress costs $1,999, 89% more expensive than the average coil mattress we test. While the price-to-performance value isn’t the best, if you’re looking for an organic coil-based mattress, the Chorus could be a good option for you.

How is Naturepedic Chorus Different?
The Naturepedic Chorus has lower overall performance than average as well as a price tag that is more than average—89% higher than the average coil mattress.
Generally speaking, this is not where you want to see any mattress. Let’s dive into some of the specifics.
Advantages
The Naturepedic Chorus mattress has faster material response than average, better sex performance, and minimal off-gassing.
Neutral Factors
It has 34% deeper sinkage and 9% higher bounce than average. Both of these factors are more preferential issues, as personal needs vary between sleepers.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages of the Chorus mattress includes poorer cooling performance, poorer edge support, and probably most damming overall, the highest level of motion transfer we’ve seen from any mattress tested to date.
Compared to the average, we measured over 2.2X motion transfer. For couples or really any sensitive sleeper, these is not the numbers we want to see in this category.
Naturepedic also only offers a 100-night trial period which is shorter than the 160-night average.
Cooling Test
Cooling performance on the Naturepedic Chorus was good, but not great. During our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
80.5° F
Max Temp.
89.0° F
Ending Temp.
81.2° F
On my back and midsection, there was more notable heat build-up. My legs and arms had a less dramatic heat retention, but it wasn’t nothing.
Overall, heat retention and breathability just left something to be desired.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

Looking at our objective data we saw a fairly typical heat dissipation curve. The surface level temperature dropped from 89.0 to 85.0° F from 0 to 1 minute. Heat dissipation continued to gradually decline over the 5-minute period.
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Looking at the material construction I am more than a little surprised by the heat retention. The Naturepedic Chorus is primarily a coil mattress. As a result, it should have ample airflow.
However, it is topped with a quilted cover built from organic cotton, organic wool, and PLA.
In my view, it’s these materials that seem to be acting as something of an airflow barrier, creating a warmer feeling. I won’t go as far as to say the Chorus is a hot mattress. However, if you are a naturally warm sleeper I could see you find it less than ideal.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

Sinkage Test
The Naturepedic Chorus has a very deep level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured 2.89” of sinkage in our pressure point test.
Sinkage Depth
2.89″
Sinkage Feel
Very Deep
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

This is considerably deeper (0.74” deeper) than the average of 2.15”, based on all of our mattress tests to date. A deeper sinkage does help to create improved pressure relief.
In addition, for many side sleepers, deeper sinkage results in better contouring along the body. However, for back and stomach sleepers this sinkage depth has the potential to create support problems.
Too much sinkage can push the spine out of alignment. If you are a back or stomach sleeper you may want to opt for a firmer mattress from the Naturepedic line.
Motion Transfer Test
Motion transfer was extremely high on the Naturepedic Chorus mattress. In our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 18.95 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
10.57 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-8.38 m/s²
Accel. Range
18.95 m/s²
This is more than 2.2 times the average motion transfer based on all of our tests to date, which is 8.80 m/s².
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
The Naturepedic Chorus mattress is a coil-on-coil mattress with zero foams. While the material design is great in terms of organic and natural materials, that same material design does it no favors when it comes to motion transfer.
The Chorus mattress has the most motion transfer of any mattress we’ve tested to date.

If you sleep with a partner who is easily disturbed the Chorus mattress probably won’t be a great fit. Naturepedic’s pillow top or Trilux latex mattress should be considerably better when it comes to motion transfer.
Response Test
The Naturepedic Chorus has an extremely fast response time. In our tests, we measured just 0.2 seconds for the materials to mostly recover and 0.3 seconds to fully recover.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.3 sec.
This is tied for 1st for the fastest material response we’ve tested to date.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
Fundamentally, this is a coil mattress. Coils spring back to shape effectively instantly, and that’s exactly what we see here with the Chorus mattress.
A faster response can help sleepers not feel stuck, which is often a complaint among more traditional memory foam mattresses. The coil-on-coil design ensures an effectively instant material response time.
Bounce Test
Bounce was very high on the Naturepedic Chorus. In our tests, we measured 10.35” of bounce height.
Max. Depth
5.69″
Max. Rebound
4.66″
Total Bounce
10.35″
This is more bounce compared to the average of 9.50 (based on all of our mattress tests to date). Given the coil design of the Chorus mattress, a high level of bounce was expected.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
Honestly, I expected it to be a little higher. While bounce is more of a preferential factor, generally, I like to see it in the 8-12” range.
The Chorus is right in the sweet spot at 10.35”. It’s enough to create a traditional feel, make it easy to move, and improve sex, but not too much as to create a trampoline feel.
Edge Support Test
The Naturepedic has good edge support for sitting and even better support for lying. During our sitting edge support tests, we measured 4.5” of sitting edge compression.
Max Sinkage
4.50″
Lying Support
Excellent
This is 0.45” better than the average of 4.05” (based on all of our mattress tests to date). With respect to sitting edge support, generally, I like to see 4.0” or less of compression. That said, 4.5” isn’t bad at all.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While sitting directly on the edge I felt well supported. Edge support while lying directly on the edge was excellent. Even when lying directly on the edge the mattress fully supported my body weight in all sleeping positions.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Sex Test
The Naturepedic Chorus has good sex performance.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 9.0 | Very High |
Edge Support | 20% | 8.1 | Good |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
Cooling | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
Breaking apart this score, the Chorus has a relatively high bounce, which is excellent for good sex. Edge support is also good, although not great.
When sitting directly at the edge, we see a bit more sinkage than expected, especially considering its coil-based support system.

It has good cooling and good pressure relief, but if it had a thicker foam comfort layer we may have seen improved pressure relief.
Overall, the Chorus is a good mattress for sex and the coil-based design helps this mattress stay active and engaging with fast response.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on the Naturepedic Chorus mattress leaves much to be desired. Ultimately, there just isn’t much comfort material between sleepers and the support coils.
We have 0.5” of organic cotton, organic wool, and PLA on top of the 1.5” microcoil layer.
WHAT IS PLA? PLA a plant-based synthetic fiber made from non-GMO sugarcane that adds resiliency and improved moisture wicking to the mattress.
Comfort Layer
2.0″
Comfort Layer Ratio
8.0″
For lighter weight bodies this may be a sufficient thickness of materials, but for moderate and heavier weight bodies I just don’t think it’s enough.
Generally, I like to see at least 3.0” of comfort material at a minimum, with 4.0” or more being ideal.
In my view, this is an area where organic and natural mattresses often struggle. Organic cotton, organic wool, natural latex, and other natural materials can absolutely create better pressure relief, however, you need lots of those textiles to get better performance.
Given that those materials are more costly, you often don’t see them used in great abundance (as it would make the mattress prohibitively expensive). We experienced a similar type of pressure relief in our review of the Avocado Eco mattress.

While I do appreciate the design aim of the Chorus mattress as it tries to keep the price relatively low (at least for an organic / natural mattress), the pressure relief clearly suffers as a result.
In my view, many sleepers will find the level of pressure relief lacking. Unless you are a lighter-weight sleeper (150 pounds or less) I would recommend considering one of Naturepedic’s higher-end models, as they are more likely to create better pressure relief.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Naturpedic Chorus mattress is pretty minor. After the unboxing, the smell dissipated in 1 day, which is faster than the average of 6.4 days.
Initial Smell Strength
Minor
Off-Gassing Period
1 days
I’ll note here too that it’s not a typical off-gassing smell. The smell is more just strong natural textile odors, which is pretty common for natural mattresses. It isn’t the same type of overpowering poly foam / memory foam off-gassing.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 10 | 25 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 8.0 | Good |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Company policies for Naturpedic are pretty good. This mattress has a 100-night trial with free shipping and free returns if it doesn’t work out. If you do decide to keep the mattress, it is backed by a 25-year warranty.
Compared to the average mattress, the rial is 43% shorter, but the warranty is 11.9 years longer.
Naturpedic mattresses are manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio, and boast their Amish workforce as a sign of good craftsmanship and care.
How firm is the Chorus?
The Naturpedic Chorus is a medium firm mattress, ranking a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This is a very common firmness and is a good option for sleepers looking for a balanced feel or a mattress that will suit a wide range of sleepers.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Naturepedic Chorus mattress is a bit of a mixed bag. The Chorus has a very deep level of sinkage, 2.89” based on our measurements.

This is among the deepest sinkage levels we measured to date (currently #7 out of everything we’ve tested).
For lighter-weight sleepers and moderate-weight side sleepers, this type of sinkage depth is fine (provided you do prefer deeper sinkage).
However, for moderate-weight back and stomach sleepers or heavier-weight sleepers of all positions, it’s simply too much. With nearly 3” of sinkage it’s likely to drop the spine out of alignment, creating less than great support for many sleepers.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Maybe | Yes | Maybe |
250-300 lbs. | No | No | No |
Design
The Naturpedic Chorus is a coil-based mattress that is primarily a coil support layer plus a comfort layer of pocketed micro-coils, organic wool, and organic cotton. There is no foam in this mattress.
Type
Coil
Thickness
10″
Firmness
6
It has a 10″ thick profile, which is pretty standard for a foam-based mattress, but a little thinner than what we usually see for coil-based mattresses or hybrids.
The thinner profile can sometimes cause pressure relief issues or other support problems for heavier sleepers.

Materials
The Naturpedic Chorus mattress is a 10″ coil mattress that boasts its use of organic materials, which include organic cotton, organic wool, and PLA as well as a coil-based support system.
- 0.5″ quilted cover
- 1.5″ microcoils
- 8.0″ pocketed coils

The Cover
The Naturpedic Chorus has a quilted cover that uses organic cotton fabric, organic wool batting, and a PLA comfort layer. It has a simple design with a diagonal stitching pattern across the top.

The sides of the mattress have a reinforced fabric with a natural look to it. There are no handles on the sides of this mattress.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is a mix of organic wool and a 1.5″ thick layer of pocketed microcoils. This blend of materials gives the mattress a responsive and bouncy feel, without compromising the contour and hug of the top layer.

Below the microcoils is a layer of organic cotton batting. This helps to transition from the microcoils to the larger support coils below.
The Support Layer
Primary support of this mattress is an 8.0″ thick layer of individually encased support coils. These coils can move independently from each other and are designed for limiting motion transfer and improving pressure relief.

This layer is encased in organic cotton, which also helps to limit the noise of the coils.
Product Evolution
The Naturpedic Chorus first launched in February 2017. Since it hit the market, there have been no major changes to the design or material.
One minor change is the trial period and warranty. Older versions of the Chorus offered only a 90-night trial period with a 10-year warranty.
The current Chorus mattress has a 100-night trial period with a 25-year warranty.
