Best For

  • Outstanding pressure relief with 13.5″ thickness
  • Excellent edge support, only 2.5″ of sinkage when seated at the edge
  • Slightly more bounce than the average

Considerations

  • Higher levels of motion transfer than average
  • Canadian sleepers only—the Frontier hybrid is not available outside of Canada

Our Verdict

The Logan & Cove Frontier mattress is a 13.5″ hybrid with a medium to medium-firm feel and balanced performance across the board. It uses a combination of poly foam, microcoils, and pocketed support coils to provide comfort and support.

In our performance tests, the Frontier had great scores with the only real downside being higher levels of motion transfer.

This mattress is priced below average while still providing above-average performance. This makes the Frontier an excellent value and a much better choice over the original Logan & Cove hybrid (which was discontinued in Canada in mid-2023).

How is Logan & Cove Frontier Different?

The Logan & Cove Frontier has slightly better overall performance than average, and a lower cost as well—priced 28% below the price of the average hybrid we’ve tested to date.

During our performance tests, we noted cooling performance, response time, and edge support to all be better than average. The mattress is also 1.6″ thicker than average with a 10% deeper comfort layer than average. It also has a longer trial period, over 2X the length of the average mattress trial we’ve tested.

The only real downside to the Frontier is motion transfer levels, which we measured at 37% higher than average levels.

Considering preferential factors, the Frontier has slightly more sinkage than average (4% more) and also slightly less bounce than average (2% less).

9.0

Cooling Test

Cooling performance on the Logan & Cove Frontier is excellent. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp.

84.7° F

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The hybrid design by itself creates great airflow. However, the inclusion of the microcoil layer within the comfort layer further increases airflow, providing an air gap between layers of poly foam.

This air gap microcoil layer helps bring increased airflow into the comfort layer.

When we look at our objective data we see a temperature reduction of 4.9° from minutes 0 to 1 and a reduction of 7.6° from minutes 0 to 5. These temperature declines are 0.31 and 0.58° cooler than the average, respectively.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Logan And Cove Frontier Heat Dissipation Chart

While that’s not a massive differential compared to the average, it’s not nothing.

When we look at the complete picture of objective data, subjective experience, and material analysis, I’m confident most sleepers will find the Logan and Cove Frontier to be more than sufficient for cooling.

Sinkage Test

The Logan & Cove Frontier has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.28”. This is 0.09” more sinkage than the average of 2.19”.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Logan And Cove Frontier Sinkage Test
Logan And Cove Frontier Sinkage Test

The Frontier mattress creates a balanced feel within the foams. The comfort layer does create a body contouring hug, but it has a more traditional and even feel.

This is in contrast to memory foam, which has a more exacting, precise, and often, entrapping feel. Overall, I found the sinkage profile to be well-balanced in feel and moderate in its depth.

7.2

Motion Transfer Test

The Logan & Cove Frontier has a moderate level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 11.14 m/s². This is 3.01 m/s² (37%) more motion than the average of 8.13 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

4.72 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-6.42 m/s²

Accel. Range

11.14 m/s²

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

The hybrid design and inclusion of the microcoil layer within the comfort layer are creating the higher level of motion transfer.

While microcoils are great for improving breathability and cooling, they also provide very little support or pushback.

As a result, when sleepers move around or get in / out of bed that microcoil layer quickly collapses under the weight. The sudden change in sleeper sinkage allows for more abrupt contact with the support layer, which creates the higher motion.

When we look at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see our motion spike from 0 to 0.21 seconds.

Logan And Cove Frontier Motion Transfer Chart
Logan And Cove Frontier Motion Transfer Chart

Motion declines thereafter, but we continue to see energy and movement until around 1.06 seconds, when we return to near zero levels.

Neither the motion spike nor energy duration are particularly good. That said, this isn’t a high level of motion transfer, but more sensitive sleepers could find it to be problematic.

9.1

Response Test

The Logan & Cove Frontier has a very fast material response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.3 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.8 seconds. Both of these measurements are faster than the average.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.8 sec.

Based on all of our tests to date, on average, we see a mostly recovered speed of 0.43 seconds and an average fully recovered speed of 0.87 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The poly foam + microcoil comfort layer on top of a layer of pocketed support coils helps materials rebound back to shape extremely quickly. The fast response ensures sleepers will never feel stuck on the mattress.

Bounce Test

The Logan & Cove Frontier has a high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 9.49”. This is 0.16” lower than the average of 9.65”.

Max. Depth

5.18″

Max. Rebound

4.31″

Total Bounce

9.49″

As with other performance areas, the bounce is driven through the hybrid design, micro coil layer, and poly foams. The pocketed coil foundation and microcoils in particular are able to create a higher level of bounce.

Max. Sinkage Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

The poly foam comfort layer and quilted cover absorb some portion of the bounce and total energy, but not to the same degree that a memory foam would.

Ideally, I like to see 8-12” of total bounce height. The Fronter is right in the sweet spot at 9.49”. At this bounce level, I expect most sleepers will find it perfectly acceptable.

9.5

Edge Support Test

Edge support on the Logan & Cove Frontier is outstanding for sitting and excellent for lying. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting edge compression of 2.5”. This is 1.70” less compression than the average of 4.20”.

Max Sinkage

2.50″

Lying Support

Excellent

Ideally, I’m looking for 4.0” or less for sitting sinkage compression. The Frontier easily exceeded that mark, landing it among the most supportive edge performances we’ve tested to date.

Even when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying support was nearly as impressive. When lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. Much of the edge support is being driven by the reinforced perimeter edge coils within the pocketed coil unit.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

These extra supportive coils ensure that the edge creates more pushback and support, creating better performance even when extra weight is applied directly to the edge. Overall, I’m happy with the level of edge support performance, especially at this price point.

8.9

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have good bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%8.4High
Edge Support20%10Outstanding
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.0Excellent
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

The Frontier has high levels of bounce and outstanding edge support (both sitting or lying). These two factors alone make up 80% of the sex performance score. Noise is minimal and pressure relief and cooling are both excellent as well.

Overall, couples can expect great performance for the dance without pants.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Logan & Cove Frontier has excellent pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no pressure point build-up anywhere on my body.

Comfort Layer

4.5″

Support Layer

9.0″

The mattress has a thick 4.5” comfort layer, which is thicker than the average comfort layer of 4.1” (based on all of our tests to date). While the 1.0” microcoil layer does more for cooling than it does for pressure relief, having it included within the comfort layer is certainly better than not being included.

The top cover on the Frontier is plusher and allows body weight to sink through fairly easily. In addition, the contouring hug isn’t as dramatic as memory foam is going to be.

Logan And Cove Frontier Edge Support Sitting
Logan And Cove Frontier Edge Support Sitting

The hug is quite balanced around the body and reminds me of a more traditional mattress. The moderate level of sinkage allows for pressure relief, without excessively enveloping the body, providing for easy movement. Overall, I expect most sleepers will be happy with the pressure relief dynamic.

6.7

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing speed on the Logan and Cove Frontier is mediocre.

The smell was strong right out of the box. The smell lasted a total of 12 days, which is significantly longer than the 4-day average we’ve seen across the board (comparing over 163+ mattresses tested to date).

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

12 days

That being said, off-gassing is a “one-and-done” process so once the odors have dissipated, there are minimal to no long-term effects for this category of mattress scoring.

Logan & Cove has excellent company policies.

The Frontier has a 365-night trial period as well as a 15-year warranty. Shipping is free and so are returns if the mattress ends up not working out.

As a reminder to US-based sleepers, this mattress is manufactured and and only available in Canada. It does not currently ship to the US.

How firm is Logan & Cove Frontier?

The Logan & Cove Frontier mattress has a medium feel of 5.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

Firmness Chart 55

This firmness is suitable to a wide range of sleepers, having sufficient support for spinal alignment, but also a level of softness that allows for contour and hug.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Logan & Cove Frontier is excellent. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is built with robust, high-quality foams, pocketed coils, and microcoils.

The support layer is 9.0”, which is 1.2” thicker than the average of 7.8”. A thicker support layer is typically able to support greater weights.

Logan And Cove Frontier Relaxing

In addition, the pocketed coil base is a zoned unit, meaning it creates additional support where you have extra weight, allowing for a more neutral spinal alignment.

Given the medium to medium-firm feel, 4.5” comfort layer, and extra thick 9.0” pocketed coil base, I have great confidence in the overall support performance for the Frontier.

Materials

There are a total of 5 layers on the Logan & Cove Frontier mattress. The top 4 are primarily comfort layers and the last layer is reserved for support exclusively.

From top to bottom, here is how the Frontier stacks up:

  • 0.875” euro top (⅞” thick)
  • 1.0” gel poly foam
  • 1.0” micro coils
  • 1.625” poly foam (1 and ⅝” thick)
  • 9.0” pocketed coils

The Cover

The cover of the Frontier mattress is a ⅞” thick Euro cover. It is quilted for a plush feel and provides a nice degree of contour and softness to the surface of the mattress.

Logan And Cove Frontier Cover Close

The Comfort Layer

Below the Euro cover is the comfort layer, which contains 3 sub-layers—cooling gel foam, microcoils, and a transitional poly foam.

The gel poly foam at the top helps to limit heat retention and provides excellent cooling. Microcoils below also help with breathability and pressure relief, although they don’t do much for support.

The 2″ poly foam at the base of the comfort layer is Elastex, a transitional support foam that helps provide deep pressure relief as sleepers engage deeper into the materials. It also helps to disperse weight across the surface of the mattress and into the support layer.

The Support Layer

The support layer is the bottom of the mattress and includes a 9.0″ pocketed coil unit, with each coil individually encased in a thin fabric.

This support layer mimics what we see on many traditional hybrids, although we oftentimes only see 8.0″ of coils. So in that respect, the 9.0″ coil is taller than average.

Product Evolution

The Frontier by Logan & Cove was first launched in June 2023. Since it’s initial release, there have been no noted changes to the design of this mattress. As the Frontier ages, we will update this section with any product changes to speak of.

The Fronter is the successor of the original Logan and Cove mattress. The original Logan and Cove is still available within the US and you can see our review here. In our tests, we found the original Logan & Cove struggled significantly with both cooling and edge support. Both of those areas were notably improved on the Fronter, resulting in a much stronger performance overall.

The Logan & Cove Choice is a 12″ thick hybrid and another option in the Logan & Cove collection. The Choice has a thinner profile compared to the Frontier but still has great performance. Sleepers who don’t need the extra pressure relief that the Frontier touts could benefit from the savings that the Choice mattress provides. The Choice mattress is slightly firmer than the Frontier (6 out of 10 on the NapLab firmness scale).
