Our Verdict

The Big Fig mattress is a 13″ hybrid mattress designed specifically for plus-sized sleepers. It includes a plush quilted cover, poly foam, and a pocketed coil base.

This mattress has very minimal levels of sinkage and high levels of bounce. It doesn’t have a floating feel and instead just feels very supportive and responsive (due in part to the high bounce).

This mattress is available in a single firmness, 7 out of 10, which gives the mattress a slightly firm feel.

In our performance tests, the Big Fig scored a 9.26 overall, ranking it among the top 5 best mattresses for heavy sleepers we’ve tested to date. Comparing all mattresses treated (over 240+ tested), the Big Fig scores in the top 10% of all mattresses tested to date.

The reasonable price of the Big Fig ($1,399 for a queen) just adds to the value of this high-performance mattress. For comparison, the average plus-sized mattress is $1,658 so the Big Fig shaves 16% off of the average sticker price.

How is Big Fig Different?

The Big Fig mattress has an overall performance that is much higher than average and a price point that is less than average—16% less than the price of the average plus-sized mattress (a savings of $259 for a queen mattress).

This makes the Big Fig an excellent value and high performer for heavier-weighted sleepers.

Advantages

Advantages of the Big Fig include better cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, and faster material response time. This mattress also has better edge support than average and a better sex performance score (a by-product of the higher bounce levels).

Pressure relief scores were also above average—overall there’s not much to not like about the Big Fig.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has very minimal sinkage and high levels of bounce. Despite the minimal sinkage, it doesn’t have a stark, floating feel which many sleepers dislike. This mattress is active and engaging without leaving sleepers feeling stuck.

Disadvantages

One disadvantage of the Big Fig could be the shorter trial period, only 120 nights compared to the 174-night average. That being said, that still gives you 4 months to decide if you like the mattress or not. And if things don’t work out, returns are free.

Off-gassing is also slightly longer than the average.

Cooling Test

The Big Fig mattress has excellent cooling performance. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.

Ending Temp.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The mattress has a lot going for it to help improve cooling. We’ve got a cool cover, gel-infused latex, and of course the hybrid design. The pocketed coil support layer helps create extra airflow for the mattress.

In addition, the cooling cover helps create a cooler experience directly on the cover itself.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.5°, which is 0.1° cooler than the average. During our tests, the foams seemed to breathe well and the cover had a cooler feel to it.

When we look at the objective data, my subjective experience, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident most sleepers will find the level of cooling performance to be good.

Sinkage Test

The Big Fig has a very minimal level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured 1.49” of pressure point sinkage. This is 0.64” less sinkage than the average of 2.13”. This type of sinkage dynamic is typical of plus-sized mattresses.

Sinkage Feel

Very Minimal

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Big Fig Sinkage Test
Big Fig Sinkage Test

The types of materials and design elements that make a mattress suitable to heavier-weighted bodies typically create less sinkage by their nature.

Based on my experience, I would describe the mattress as creating a slight level of body contouring hug. Notably, it’s not a floating feel that many plus-sized mattresses create.

Even so, the very minimal level of sinkage and more supportive foams create a significantly restrained body contouring hug. For those who dislike the way many types of foams wrap and dramatically contour the body, the Big Fig can be a great choice.

10

Motion Transfer Test

The Big Fig has an extremely low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 4.63 m/s². This is 47% less motion than the average of 8.70 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

2.05 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-2.58 m/s²

Accel. Range

4.63 m/s²

To be blunt, I was shocked by the low level of motion transfer. Typically, plus-sized mattresses create more motion transfer, as the materials needed are more supportive, denser, bouncier, and firmer, all of which increase motion.

However, the Big Fig does an amazingly good job of creating ample support, while still utilizing materials and a layered design that is able to reduce motion.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion spikes from 0 to 0.15 seconds.

There is a secondary spike from 0.45 to 0.60 seconds. And we finally reach near-zero levels of energy by 1.20 seconds. The motion duration is definitely longer than what we like to see.

Even so, it’s hard to complain too much given the extremely low level of motion spike. All data considered, I don’t expect motion transfer will be an issue for most sleepers.

Response Test

The Big Fig has a very fast material response. During our mostly recovered test, we measured 0.2 seconds for the mattress to rebound back to shape. This is 0.21 seconds faster than the average.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.6 sec.

During our fully recovered test, we measured 0.60 seconds to rebound back to shape. This is 0.30 seconds faster than the average of 0.90 seconds. Both of these responsiveness rates are significantly faster than the averages.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The rapid response ensures you’ll never feel stuck on the mattress and the mattress is easy to move around on. I don’t expect responsiveness will be a problem for most sleepers.

Bounce Test

The Big Fig has a high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured 11.04” of total bounce height. This is 1.38” more bounce than the average of 9.66”.

Max. Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Higher bounce is exactly what we expect from a plus-sized mattress. The materials needed to deliver plus-sized support, especially including the thicker, firmer coil unit, also create a high level of resiliency, pushback, and bounce.

The higher bounce is likely the reason we see a longer motion duration, even though the motion transfer peaks were lower.

In any case, the higher bounce greatly facilitates ease of movement and sex performance. At 11.04” it is within the ideal 8-12” bounce range that I look for.

10

Edge Support Test

The Big Fig has an outstanding level of edge support for both sitting and lying. In our sitting edge support test, we measured just 3.0” of sitting edge sinkage. This is 1.02” less sinkage than the average of 4.02”.

Lying Support

Outstanding

Even while sitting directly on the edge the mattress is incredibly supportive. The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

The mattress is equipped with a 3.0” wide and 7.5” tall support foam that runs along the entire perimeter of the mattress. This encasement foam is extra firm and dramatically improves edge support for both sitting and lying.

When you couple this edge support foam with a coil unit that is already creating ample support you have all the right conditions for outstanding edge performance.

9.5

Sex Test

The Big Fig mattress has excellent sex performance. With just 3.0” of sitting sinkage and minimal noise, the mattress earns perfect scores for edge support and noise.

Cooling5%9.0Excellent

From there, we have excellent scores for bounce, pressure relief, and cooling. 11.04” of bounce is an above-average level of bounce that drives home much of the stellar dance without pants performance.

I expect most will find the level of amorous activity performance to be more than sufficient.

Pressure Relief Test

The Big Fig has excellent pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant level of pressure points on my body.

Comfort Layer

4.0″

Support Layer

9.0″

The mattress is equipped with a 4.0” comfort layer. This is just south of the average comfort layer thickness of 4.1”, based on all of our tests to date. The mattress uses a blend of quilted cover, latex, and poly foam to create a comfortable, yet resilient pressure relief dynamic.

The mattress is fundamentally designed to meet the needs of heavier-weighted bodies.

As a result, there is a high level of pushback from the coils to create the proper level of support. However, even as a lightweight sleeper I still received ample pressure relief.

This is particularly useful for couples who have varying body weights, where one sleeper is heavier weighted and the other is lighter weight. Overall, I expect most sleepers will find the pressure relief dynamic to be sufficient.

How firm is Big Fig?

The Big Fig mattress is available in a single firmness, 7 out of 10, and the mattress has a slightly firm feel.

Firmness Chart 7

This is the most common firmness we see for plus-sized mattresses as it is firm enough to provide support for heavier bodies without causing pressure relief issues.

Lighter-weighted sleepers will likely find this mattress to be too firm, especially side sleepers.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Big Fig creates an outstanding level of support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress is equipped with a 9.0” support layer, which is split into a 7.5” pocketed coil unit and a 1.5” support foam that sits on the foundation of the mattress.

Big Fig Reinforced Edge Support Foam
Big Fig Reinforced Edge Support Foam

This combination of support materials is thicker than the average support layer, which is 7.9”, based on all of our tests to date.

The mattress creates an incredibly robust support feeling, all while not feeling excessively firm. Many times, plus-sized mattresses struggle to create both support and comfort, which can lead to the mattress feeling overly firm.

Big Fig Back Sleeping
Big Fig Back Sleeping

The Big Fig rides a perfect balance between these needs, creating adequate pressure relief, while still equipping the mattress with thick gauge wires and high density foams capable of supporting heavier-weighted sleepers. Overall, I expect most sleepers will find support to be more than sufficient.
