Best For

  • Cooling performance was excellent, with a max surface temperature of 89.5°
  • Very low motion transfer of 2.98 m/s² (8.52 m/s² is average)
  • Excellent edge support, maximum compression of 3.25”.

Considerations

  • Response time is definitely on the slower side. It takes 0.8 seconds for the materials to mostly recovery
  • Bounce is quite low at 5.70”, making it less than great for sex
  • Limited comfort layer of 3.0” may not be thick enough for some side and heavier side side sleepers

Our Verdict

The Eco-Lux by BedInABox is a memory foam mattress with a twist, offering organic certifications and being made of 34% renewable materials.

It has good cooling, moderate sinkage, low motion transfer, slow response time, low bounce, and good edge support. The Pressure relief was less impressive and really only “okay” in my opinion.

I wasn’t blown away by the limited 3.0″ comfort layer. Heavier weighted sleepers or side sleepers would likely be better considering something with a thicker layer of comfort foam, like the Bedinabox Tranquillium. However, stomach, back, and more moderately weighted persons should find the mattress comfortable and supportive.

How is the Eco-Lux Different?

The BedInABox Eco-Lux mattress has above-average overall performance and a price tag that is also more than average—13% higher than the average memory foam mattress

Advantages

Advantages for the Eco-Lux include slightly better cooling performance, better edge support, 65% less motion transfer than average, and faster off-gassing.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has slightly less sinkage than average and 40% less bounce than average as well. If you’re looking for a mattress with less bounce, this could certainly be a good pick.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages to the Eco-Lux include a slower material response time, poorer sex performance, and a shorter trial period (41 nights shorter than average). This mattress is also only 11″ thick, 1″ thinner than the average mattress thickness, which may cause some pressure relief issues for heavier sleepers.

Cooling Test

I found the cooling performance on the BedinaBox Eco-Lux to be excellent. In our objective tests, the Eco-Lux peaked at a max temperature of 89.5°, which is 1.4° better than average (90.9° average).

The max temperature performance is similar to the performance we’ve measured on previous BedinaBox mattress tests, including the Original (87.4°) and Tranquillium (90.1°).

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The foams BedinaBox uses do seem to perform better than average consistently. However, looking at the heat dissipation data it’s not as impressive.

After 1 minute of not lying on the mattress, the surface temperature is still holding at 86.4° F. This is a decline of only 3.1° F.

This is slightly worse than the average dissipation by 1 minute, which is 3.8° F.

Heat dissipation continued gradually over the 5-minute measurement period, declining to 82.8° F by 5 minutes.

While this level of measured dissipation isn’t amazing, it’s respectably good enough in the context of the maximum temperature.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

My subjective experience on the mattress matched the objective data we recorded. I did not feel warm at any point during the test.

The Bedinabox Eco-Lux mattress breathed well, didn’t hold excessive heat in the top layers, and overall is a cool experience (especially for a 100% foam mattress).

Sinkage Test

In our pressure point test, we measured a total sinkage depth of 1.96”. This is pretty typical and very much within the normal range, especially for a medium-firm mattress.

Sinkage Depth

1.96″

Sinkage Feel

Moderate

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

BedInABox Eco Lux sinkage test
BedInABox Eco-Lux sinkage test

On average (across all mattresses we’ve tested to date), we see a sinkage depth of 2.17”. Generally, a sinkage depth in the 2.0-2.2” range is what we like see and serves to create an appropriate amount of contour for most sleepers.

10

Motion Transfer Test

The BedinaBox Eco-Lux has a low level of motion transfer. Our accelerometer measured an acceleration range of 2.98 m/s².

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

This is significantly better than what we measure on average, which is an acceleration range of 8.52 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

1.61 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

Accel. Range

Memory foam tends to do really well when it comes to motion transfer. The Eco-Lux and the 3.0” of memory foam on the top layer don’t disappoint. Looking at our motion transfer chart below (based on accelerometer data) we can see a sharp spike at the drop.

BedInABox Eco Lux motion transfer chart
BedInABox Eco-Lux motion transfer chart

However, most of the energy is dissipated by 0.3 seconds. After which, acceleration on the mattress is effectively zero.

9.7

Response Test

The response time was fairly slow on the Bedinabox Eco-Lux mattress. We measured a total time of 0.8 seconds for the materials to mostly recover and 1.2 seconds for a full recovery.

Mostly Recovered

0.8 sec.

Complete Recovery

1.2 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Memory foam as a material class does tend to offer a slower response compared to poly foam, latex, and other materials, so it’s not unexpected. On average (across all mattresses we’ve tested to date) we see a mostly recovered response time of 0.65 seconds and a full recovery time of 1.0 seconds.

So Bedinabox’s Eco-Lux coming in at 0.8 and 1.2 (for mostly & full recovery, respectively) is a good bit below average.

If you are the type of sleeper who finds you feel “stuck” or overly enveloped by the classic feel of memory foam you may want to consider a mattress with a faster response time. Purple’s Hybrid (0.2 seconds), Leesa Legend (0.2 seconds), and Layla’s memory foam (0.3 seconds) are just a few options that offer a significantly faster response. See our full list of mattress reviews & tests for more information.

Bounce Test

Bounce on the Eco-Lux mattress is low. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 5.70”.

This is well below average compared to other mattresses we’ve tested.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

On average, we see a total bounce height of 9.26”. Less bounce isn’t necessarily worse, as it’s more of a preferential factor. However, less bounce does mean it’s harder to move around, get in and out of bed, and it’s also worse for sex.

9.9

Edge Support Test

Edge support on the Eco-Lux was excellent. In our tests, while sitting, we measured a maximum compression of only 3.25”.

These results are on the low end and significantly better than the average compression we see, which is 4.11”.

The Eco-Lux did a fantastic job at maintaining great support, even while sitting directly on the edge. Edge support while lying on the edge was equally as good. I felt fully supported while lying on the absolute edge.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%8.9Very Low
Edge Support20%9.9Excellent
Noise10%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9Very Good
Cooling5%9.5Excellent

For the BedInABox Eco-Lux, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.2.

Let’s talk through some of these factors.

First, bounce. Bounce is arguably the most critical factor when considering the quality of sex performance on any mattress. Good sex is active and engaging and you typically need a mattress with good bounce to get into the groove.

Memory foam, in general, is typically designed to reduce bounce. This is good for limiting motion transfer, but not so good for the down and dirty.

BedInABox Eco Lux mattress corner close
BedInABox Eco Lux mattress corner close

Moving on, there’s edge support. The Eco-Lux did fantastic and offers great edge support. The noise was also minimal (since there are no coils) and cooling was good as well.

Pressure relief was a little less than I typically like to see. The Eco-Lux only has a 3.0″ comfort layer before going straight to the support foam. There is no transitional foam separating the two, which may mean more engagement with the support foam than you’d like.

This would be especially true for larger bodies or heavier weights.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief was good, but not amazing on the Eco-Lux mattress. The biggest problem with pressure relief on the mattress is the sheer comfort layer thickness.

Comfort Layer

3.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

At only 3.0” of comfort material, it’s just not tremendously thick. As a result, side sleepers and heavier-weight sleepers are more likely to sink through that top layer and interact more with the support foam.

This creates pressure relief issues. Back, stomach, and lightweight sleepers are less likely to have issues.

Even so, the pressure relief just leaves something to be desired.

BedInABox Eco Lux mattress
BedInABox Eco-Lux mattress

Based on our testing experience, I felt that the Bedinabox Tranquillium and Original were notably superior with respect to pressure relief.

It’s possible that the sustainable / eco-friendly materials used in the Eco-Lux are having a negative impact on the pressure relief performance.

9.8

Off-Gassing Test

Right out of the box the smell on the Bedinabox Eco-Lux was strong.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

2 days

However, despite the initial strength, the smell only lingered for 2 days.

On average, we typically see mattress smells lingering for 2.58 days, so the Eco-Lux is a little ahead of the game.

Company

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

For BedInABox, these individual terms and conditions generated a company score of 9.8.

BedInABox has been rolling and shipping mattresses since 2004, making them one of the earliest established online mattress suppliers to hit the market.

They offer 6 different mattress models to choose from and favorable terms and conditions.

Each mattress comes with a 120-night trial period, a 20-year limited warranty, and free shipping both ways.

All of the mattresses are made in and distributed from North Carolina, which is a plus for shipping times if you live in the US, specifically the east coast.

How firm is the Eco Lux?

The Eco-Lux has a medium-firm feel, around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

Support & Sleeping Positions

In general, I found support to be sufficient on the BedinaBox Eco-Lux.

My only concern is really the pressure relief dynamic. Pressure relief and support are two sides of the same coin.

There is only 3.0” of comfort foam on the Eco-Lux mattress, which means some side sleepers and heavier weight sleepers may sink straight through and into the support foam.

When this happens you’ll experience a pressure relief issue and also a support issue.

BedInABox Eco Lux stomach sleeping
BedInABox Eco-Lux stomach sleeping

Again, overall, the support is more than sufficient. Lightweight and moderate-weight persons will be fine. As will most back and stomach sleepers.

You can see how the Eco-Lux scores on our support table below:

Sleeper WeightStomach SleepersSide SleepersBack Sleepers
Under 150 lbs.YesYesYes
150-250 lbs.Yes YesYes
250-300 lbs.YesYesYes

As you can see, generally, this is a good option. However, my concerns are more for side sleepers and heavier-weight persons (especially over 300 pounds). The likelihood of support issues increases with these types of sleepers.

Is there a max weight?

According to BedInABox, there is no max weight for the Eco-Lux mattress. But that being said, when I spoke to a chat representative, they were fairly quick to mention two important notes.

#1. For heavier sleepers, they recommend the Tranquillium mattress.

The Tranquillium mattress has a 12″ profile and offers 5″ of foam before you get to the support foam. More foam tends to be better for heavier sleepers and prevents painful pressure points or too much engagement with the support foam at the base.

BedInABox Eco Lux mattress side
BedInABox Eco Lux mattress side

#2. The 20-year warranty is only valid when the mattress is used with an approved base.

While they said that too much weight on the mattress would not void the warranty, they did mention that you must pair the mattress with an approved base.

Exactly what is considered an “approved” base is found in the fine print, but if you’re concerned, BedInABox fabricates and sells foundations as well. All BedInABox foundations are approved for all of their mattresses.

Design

The Eco-Lux has a simple design. Instead of fancy layers and production details, they focus on simplicity and material composition.

When we cut into the Eco-Lux mattress, it reveals a standard cover, the fire sock, and two block layers of foam.

Oftentimes, with more expensive mattresses, we’ll see the use of convoluted or perforated foams, gel layers, etc. But with the Eco-Lux, we really don’t see any of that.

Materials

The materials of the BedInABox Eco-Lux are straightforward and break down as two layers of foam, encased in an organic cotton cover. The two layers are:

  • 3.0″ memory foam
  • 8.0″ support foam
BedInABox Eco Lux material layers

The Cover

The cover is organic cotton. It is soft, breathable, and has moisture-wicking properties.

BedInABox Eco Lux mattress cover

Aesthetically, it uses a natural palette of off-white and soft green to represent the natural, organic materials used in this mattress.

The Comfort Layer

The main comfort layer of the Eco-Lux mattress is the 3.0″ layer of 4.0 lb memory foam.

BedInABox Eco Lux measuring layers
BedInABox Eco-Lux measuring layers

Unlike traditional memory foam, which is made of petroleum-based chemicals and can have a strong odor, the foam on the Eco-Lux has a classic memory foam feel with certified organic properties.

On the Lux, up to 34% of the mattress contents are made from renewable materials.

The Support Layer

The bottom support layer is a firmer support foam that is designed to provide a base for the layer above.

BedInABox Eco Lux mattress materials
BedInABox Eco-Lux mattress materials

As you begin to sink into the mattress, parts of your body will sink deeper through the comfort layer and engage with more of the layer. When this happens, you’ll need a quality bottom layer to provide adequate spinal alignment and support.

As mentioned above, the disadvantage here is that too much engagement with the support foam can lead to painful pressure points. So it’s a delicate balance.

Product Evolution

BedInABox has been making mattresses since 2004, but the Eco-Lux didn’t join the lineup until 2020. The Eco-Lux is the first Bio-Preferred memory foam mattress and offers other certifications, like CertiPUR-US as well as OEKO-TEX.

There have been no product evolution changes to the Eco-Lux since its launch in 2020.

BedinaBox Eco-Lux vs. Tranquillium

Both the BedInABox Eco-Lux and Tranqiullium are high-quality combo foam mattresses. The Eco-Lux has an 11″ profile with 3″ of comfort foam and the Tranquillium has a 12″ profile with 5″ of comfort foam.

Despite the thicker profile, the Tranquillium actually has a lower price tag. But Eco-Lux has more to offer than just thickness alone.

Other Mattresses to Consider

Like the sound of the Eco-Lux, but still not sure if it’s the best choice for you? You may want to consider one of the three other mattress options below.

For Heavier Sleepers

Thicker Profile + Better Pressure Relief

The Tranquillium mattress is another other by BedInABox. But instead of a single 3.0″ layer of comfort foam, the Tranquillium has 3.0″ of gel memory foam and 2.0″ of poly foam. The poly foam acts as comfort foam and transitional foam. This may be a better option for larger sleepers or side sleepers.
