Best For
- Lightweight side sleepers who want a soft feel
- Outstanding cooling performance
- Outstanding pressure relief with 5.0″ of comfort material
Considerations
- Motion transfer is higher than I’d like to see
- The softer feel may not be right for back or stomach sleepers
Our Verdict
The Amerisleep AS5 mattress is a memory foam hybrid with a 14″ profile height, luxury soft feel, and fantastic performance across the board. At its core, the AS5 hybrid is the epitome of modern memory foam at work. It comes with an advanced cooling cover, Bio-Pur (plant-based) foam, and a supportive pocketed coil base.
It has slightly deeper sinkage and high bounce, which give it a distinct memory foam feel that is still easy to move around on. It comes in only one firmness option that is very soft (3.5 out of 10).
The AS5 Hybrid has a performance score of 9.24, ranking it in the top 9% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking at memory foam hybrids specifically, it is in the top 4%.
On the flip side, the AS5 Hybrid is also $776 (or 57%) more than the average mattress.
In the end, I was most impressed with the cooling performance. The softer memory foam creates the type of mattress that you just melt into. The AS5 Hybrid is arguably the best soft mattress I’ve tested to date, and one of my all-time favorites overall.
Type: Memory Foam Hybrid

How is the AS5 Hybrid Different?
The AS5 Hybrid by Amerisleep has better overall performance than average, but also a price tag that is above average—38% more than the average memory foam hybrid.
Despite the higher cost, the performance advantages are significant and if you’re looking for a high-quality soft mattress, the AS5 checks may boxes.
Advantages
This mattress has better cooling performance, faster material response time, better sex performance, and 20% more comfort material (great for pressure relief).
Neutral Factors
Sinkage and bounce are considered neutral factors, but the AS5 has slightly deeper sinkage and slightly higher bounce than average.

The differences aren’t hugely noticeable but may be a factor if you’re looking for something with drastically different performance than average.
Disadvantages
The AS5 has slightly more motion transfer than average and poorer edge support than average as well. Off-gassing is also a bit slower and the trial period is shorter, although these factors may not be an issue for all sleepers.
Cooling Test
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid has outstanding cooling performance. During our tests, not only did I not feel any significant heat retention, but instead I was noticeably cool.
Baseline Temp.
79.7° F
Max Temp.
87.6° F
Ending Temp.
82.7° F
Amerisleep uses what they call their “Refresh” cover. They don’t explicitly call it a phase change fabric, but that’s what it feels like to me. Phase change fabrics use specialized fibers that avoid heat retention and remain cool (far better than more typical fibers and textiles).
More basic phase change fabrics remain cool for a few minutes and then heat up like a normal fiber would. However, the cover that Amerisleep uses remains consistently cool, even when I lie on the same spot for an extended period of time.
Without question, the cooling cover is having an outsized impact on overall cooling performance.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In addition, the hybrid design helps by increasing airflow. As uses a modern memory foam formulation, which allows the foams to breathe better and aren’t heat reactive, both of which further improve cooling.
In our objective tests, we measured a maximum temperature of 87.6° F. This is 1.8° cooler than the average (based on all of our tests to date).
Given the significantly reduced starting max temperature, the heat dissipation declines weren’t as dramatic. However, that is to be expected.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When you don’t start as hot you have far less heat to reduce. Looking at the combination of objective data, my subjective experience, materials, and design, I am confident in the belief that the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid is an exceptionally cool mattress.
Sinkage Test
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured 2.21” of pressure point sinkage depth.
Sinkage Depth
2.21″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
This is just slightly deeper than the average sinkage depth of 2.15” (based on all of our tests to date).
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

While the pressure point sinkage test was fairly balanced in its depth, it should be noted that heavier parts of your body will sink deeper. This is a soft mattress, which creates a more dramatic contouring hug and more significant sinkage depth (especially for butt, hips, and mid-section).
When I think “modern memory foam” this is the mattress brand that comes to mind.
The memory foam creates the more dramatic contouring hug that we love from memory foam, but it’s not insanely dense, so it stays cool. Also, it responds incredibly quickly, so you never feel stuck.
Overall, the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid memory foam is a fantastic foam formulation that creates the beneficial feel of memory foam (hug, contour, pressure relief), while minimizing the negatives (heat, slow response, heat reactive feel).
Motion Transfer Test
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid has a low to moderate level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured 9.65 m/s² of acceleration range. This is 8% more motion than the 8.80 m/s² average (based on all of our tests to date).
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
I was a bit surprised we didn’t see a lower level of motion. Generally, softer mattresses have less motion, as the soft feel absorbs so much of the energy.
However, that softer memory foam is counteracted by the faster response, hybrid design, and taut thin cover, all of which combine to create slightly more motion.
Max. Acceleration
4.76 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-4.89 m/s²
Accel. Range
9.65 m/s²
If we look at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes the accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0.00 to 0.21 seconds.

Motion drops off into a lower range after 0.21 seconds and returns to near-zero levels by 0.92 seconds. Overall, I’m not worried about motion transfer. Yes, it could be lower, however, the benefits of the materials and design creating more motion are worth the trade-off.
Response Test
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid has an extremely fast material response time. In our tests, we measured 0.2 seconds to mostly recover and 0.3 seconds to fully recover. This is tied for 1st as the fastest-responding mattress we’ve tested to date.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.3 sec.
Amerisleep uses a specialized memory foam formulation that creates near-instant material recovery, while still delivering the benefits and feel of memory foam.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The AS5 Hybrid is notably faster than the average. Based on all of our tests to date, we have measured an average mostly recovered response time of 0.43 seconds and an average fully recovered response time of 0.91 seconds.
Bounce Test
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid has a high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 9.71”. This is slightly more bounce than the average of 9.50” (based on all of our tests to date).
Max. Depth
6.23″
Max. Rebound
3.48″
Total Bounce
9.71″
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The hybrid design and more responsive memory foam rebound a considerable level of energy, creating more bounce. In general, I like to see 8-12” of bounce.
It’s enough to experience the benefits of bounce (easier to move around, avoid stuck feeling, better for sex), while not being too high, thereby creating new issues.

At 9.71” the AS5 Hybrid is right in the middle. The Amerisleep mattress has the right level of bounce that most sleepers will enjoy.
Edge Support Test
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid has good edge support for sitting and excellent support for lying. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting edge compression of 4.25”. This is 0.20” worse than average.
Max Sinkage
4.25″
Lying Support
Excellent
Less sitting edge compression is always better and ideally, I’m looking for 4.0” or less. The AS5 Hybrid misses that mark, but only slightly. While sitting directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well-supported.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

There is no sensation of material collapse, which is especially rare in a soft mattress. Softer mattresses are generally worse when it comes to edge support (especially sitting).
Lying edge support is equally as impressive. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions, even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The performance is likely a combination of superior material quality (both foam and coil unit) and overall mattress design (thicker profile is better able to handle pressures at the edge). Overall, I’m extremely pleased with the edge support performance.
Sex Test
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid has good sex performance, but it has some room for improvement. The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 8.6 | High |
Edge Support | 20% | 8.4 | Good |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
This mattress has high bounce, good edge support, and is super comfortable. It’s all of the best parts of the AS5 working together to create a near-perfect environment conducive to better sex.
It’s the cooling cover, the 5.0″ layer of comfort foams, and the bounce of a pocketed coil base—all design elements that enhance sex performance on the AS5.

The only real disadvantage could be the edge support. It’s good, but not amazing, so this may be something to consider, depending on your personal preferences.
Pressure Relief Test
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid has outstandingly good pressure relief. The mattress has a soft feel, while still creating plenty of transitional and deep compression support.
Comfort Layer
5.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
The top layers of memory foam and poly foam allow the body to sink into the mattress, gradually dropping the body to an equilibrium of comfort and supportive pushback.
During our tests, I felt no pressure point issues in any sleeping position. The AS5 Hybrid does an amazingly good job at creating fantastic comfort, pressure-relieving memory foam hug, and balanced support.
Off-Gassing Test
Right out of the box, there was a strong smell from the AS5 hybrid. This smell lingered for 7 days, which is about a bit longer than the 6-day average length across all mattresses tested to date.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
7 days
That being said, all off-gassing smells are temporary and once the odors dissipate they are gone for the life of the mattress. Off-gassing is not something that usually has any long-term effects on the mattress.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 20 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Amerisleep launched in 2007 and is a well-established name in the industry. They have good a trial period and shipping / return policies.
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid comes with a 100-night trial period, with the condition of a 30-night “break-in period”. In the first 30 days of owning this mattress, Amerisleep asks that you give it a full chance to adjust to your body.
If after those first 30 days, you still don’t love the mattress, you can get a full refund. Shipping is free and returns are free.
Amerisleep also offers a 20-year warranty.
How firm is the AS5 Hybrid?
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid is a soft mattress at a 3.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This soft firmness definitely narrows the range of sleepers who would be right for this mattress. But just because it isn’t right for everyone doesn’t mean that it is a bad firmness to target.

Also, remember there are other firmnesses available with different Amerisleep models. The table below outlines other models and their associated firmness.
Model | Firmness |
---|---|
AS1 | Firm |
AS2 | Medium Firm |
AS3 | Medium |
AS4 | Medium Soft |
AS5 | Soft |
If you think the AS5 sounds too soft for you, consider one of their other firmness options.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid mattress has excellent support. Throughout our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.
The 14” profile is more than thick enough to create the right environment for excellent deep compression support. That said, this is a soft mattress.
Soft mattresses are not ideal for all body types or all sleepers. Side sleepers of most body types and lighter-weight sleepers are most likely to be an ideal match for this level of softness.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Maybe | Yes | Maybe |
250-300 lbs. | No | Maybe | No |
Stomach, back, and heavier-weight sleepers may find the level of sinkage is too deep, especially in the midsection.
If you are a stomach, back, or heavier-weight sleeper you may want to consider the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid, which is a medium firmness option better suited to those sleeping positions.
Design
The Amerisleep AS5 mattress is, on all accounts, a luxury hybrid. It is 2″ thicker than the other Amerisleep mattresses, has a soft, plush feel, and fantastic pressure relief.

Materials
There are four main layers of the Amerisleep AS5 hybrid. From top to bottom, here is an inside look at all the layers:
- 3.0″ memory foam
- 2.0″ poly foam
- 8.0″ pocketed coils
- 1.0″ support foam

The Cover
The AS5 Hybrid has the Refresh cover, which comes standard on this mattress. This cover is designed to support improved daily performance and energy.
The fabric is designed to convert your natural body heat into far infrared energy. This energy has known benefits like increased blood circulation, improved muscle recovery, and improved quality of sleep.
As an added bonus, the cover also has a zipper closure, which makes it easy to take it off for cleaning.

During the performance tests, I found this cover to be thin, cool, and soft to the touch.
The Comfort Layer
Below the cover is the comfort layer. This layer is made up of two layers of foam—a 3.0″ layer of memory foam followed by a 2.0″ layer of poly foam.

The top memory foam allows for deeper levels of contour and sinkage, while still maintaining adequate pressure relief. The poly foam layer below acts as a transitional foam which eases the pressure from the top layer into the support layer.
The Support Layer
The support layer is an 8.0″ layer of pocketed coils. These coils are individually encased in a thin fabric, which helps to limit noise and motion transfer (compared to traditional innerspring mattresses).

Product Evolution
The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid is the present-day version of Amerisleep’s Independence mattress.
The Independence was originally launched in 2015 among a lineup of new modern memory foam mattresses. These mattresses featured Activus (a foam with the contour of memory foam, but rapid response of latex), Bio-PUR foam, and a Celliant-enriched cooling cover.
In 2019, Amerisleep changed the name from Amerisleep Independence to Amerisleep AS5. At this time, the AS5 was still only available as an all-foam mattress.
In 2020, Amerisleep launched the hybrid version of the AS5. This replaced the original support foam with support coils. This change improved cooling, edge support, and sex. In 2020 the AS5 and AS5 Hybrid no longer used Celliant within the cover.
In 2022, Amerisleep started using its Refresh cover. It’s unclear exactly what the cover is made from, but most likely it’s a blend of polyester and Celliant-like fibers.

For Budget

Helix Moonlight
Overall Score: 8.45
The Helix Moonlight hybrid mattress is another option for a very soft feel—3.5 out of 10. Unlike the AS5’s 14″ profile, the Moonlight has a 12″ profile and only 3.0″ of comfort material. But it’s also a savings of over 30% compared to the luxurious AS5.
For Edge Support

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid
Great Cooling, Fast Response
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid mattress has a thinner profile than the AS5, but still maintains fantastic performance. The thinner top foams also allow this mattress improved edge support.
