Our Verdict

The Leesa mattress first launched in 2014 and has grown from the fan-favorite, Leesa Original, to also include a budget pick (Leesa Studio) and two hybrid options (Leesa Hybrid and Leesa Legend).

All four of these mattresses offer low motion transfer, fast response time, and a balanced feel. The 100% foam options save some cash, but the hybrid options provide better pressure relief, more bounce, and better cooling.

If you simply want the best overall performance, go with the Leesa Hybrid. It has a medium-firm feel and was fantastic across our battery of tests. It’s sitting edge support isn’t great, but that’s the only area it struggled.

Leesa Legend is a slightly softer hybrid with a zoned coil system. These design facts make is an excellent choice if you sleep primarily on your side.

The Leesa Original is a more balanced all foam mattress. It’s a bit warmer and slightly worse for sex, but otherwise, it’s pretty similar to the Leesa hybrids.

Lastly, the Leesa Studio is the most budget-friendly option. If you absolutely need the least expensive option, this is it. But for most people, I’d at least recommend stepping up to the Leesa Original for better overall performance.

So which Leesa was the top scorer? Here is how the results shook out:

  • Leesa Original: 4 wins — most sinkage, lowest motion transfer, best edge support, least off-gassing
  • Leesa Hybrid: 4 wins — best overall, best cooling, most bounce, best pressure relief
  • Leesa Legend: 4 wins — least sinkage, fastest response time, best edge support, best for sex
  • Leesa Studio: 2 wins — slowest response time, least bounce

Looking at the overall score alone, the Leesa Hybrid is today’s winner, but as you can see from the table above, there are areas where each of the different Leesa mattresses really excel, depending on what you’re looking for.

Cooling Test

The cooling performance of all Leesa mattresses was very good, but there was one model that stood out among the rest—the Leesa Hybrid.

Cooling TestScoreBaselineMax TempEnding Temp
Leesa Hybrid1081.2°90.0°83.5°
Leesa Legend9.581.2°91.2°84.0°

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The Leesa Hybrid has a layer of pocketed coils, which helps to enhance cooling performance. During the tests, the materials breathed extremely well and there was zero noticeable heat retention.

The Leesa Hybrid is definitely among the best mattresses we’ve tested to date with respect to cooling.

Cooling on the Leesa Legend, Leesa Original, and Leesa Studio was great, but definitely not to the level of the Leesa Hybrid.

The videos below show how heat is retained or dissipated on each of the four Leesa mattresses we tested.

Sinkage Test

The sinkage level on Leesa is minimal to moderate, depending on what mattress you’re looking at.

Sinkage TestSinkage DepthMax Sinkage
Leesa HybridModerate2.05″
Leesa LegendMinimal1.88″
Leesa OriginalModerate2.09″
Leesa StudioMinimal2.00″

For reference, the average level of sinkage across all mattresses we’ve tested to date is 2.20″.

Using this data point as a baseline, all of the Leesa models tested here have less sinkage than average.

I would even go as far as to say that the Leesa Legend and Leesa Studio have minimal levels of sinkage.

Sinkage depth on the Leesa Hybrid and Leesa Original would be considered moderate.

Images below show the comparative level of sinkage for each mattress.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer on the Leesa mattresses was exceptional across all four models.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range
Leesa Hybrid104.66 m/s²
Leesa Legend104.38 m/s²
Leesa Original102.06 m/s²
Leesa Studio102.22 m/s²

For comparison, the average amount of motion transfer we see from all other mattresses we’ve tested to date is 5.83 m/s².

Every single Leesa was below this level. The Leesa Original and Leesa Studio had less than half the average level of motion transfer.

Video clips below show how motion is transferred in real-time.

We pair this video clip with objective accelerometer data that show how motion moves across the surface of the mattress.

Leesa Original Motion Transfer

Leesa Original motion transfer test

On the Leesa Original, motion peaks around 1.00 m/s² and is absorbed by 0.72 seconds.

Leesa Hybrid Motion Transfer

Leesa Hybrid motion transfer chart

On the Leesa Hybrid, there is a bit more motion transfer with levels peaking around 2.5 m/s². This energy takes a little longer to dissipate off the mattress as well, but by 1.0 seconds most of the motion has been absorbed.

Leesa Legend Motion Transfer

Leesa Legend motion transfer test chart

The Leesa Legend has a blend of foams plus pocketed coils, similar to the Leesa Hybrid, so the motion transfer chart closely mimics that of the Hybrid.

Leesa Studio Motion Transfer

Leesa Studio motion transfer

The chart for the Leesa Studio has the most restrained motion transfer levels of them all. Energy peaks around 1.00 m/s² and is basically 100% gone by 0.4 seconds.

Response Test

Response time on the Leesa is extremely fast for all models. The Leesa with the fastest response time is the Leesa Hybrid or Leesa Legend. It’s likely that the pocketed coils are a big factor in these results.

The Leesa Original and Leesa Studio are 100% foam mattresses that have slightly slower response times, but are still pretty fast.

Response TestScoreMostly RecoveredCompletely Recovered
Leesa Hybrid100.3 seconds0.4 seconds
Leesa Legend100.2 seconds0.4 seconds
Leesa Original100.3 seconds0.5 seconds

The average response time across all mattresses that we’ve tested to date is 0.56 seconds to be mostly recovered and 0.94 seconds to be fully recovered. The fastest response times we’ve tested to date are 0.2 seconds to mostly recover and 0.3 seconds for a full material recovery.

All Leesa mattresses have a faster response time than average.

You can see these material responses in real-time in the video below.

Bounce Test

Bounce levels have some big differences within the Leesa collection. For low bounce, the Leesa Original or Leesa Studio are best.

For higher levels of bounce, the Leesa Hybrid or Leesa Legend would likely be a better pick.

Bounce TestBounce HeightBounce Range
Leesa HybridVery High12.67″
Leesa LegendHigh11.57″

The average amount of bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.35″.

This puts the Original and Studio with lower levels of bounce than average. The Leesa Hybrid and Legend have more bounce than average.

Bounce levels can also be viewed in real-time via the short video clips below.

Edge Support Test

Edge support on the Leesa is good, but not great. Even on the hybrids, where coils often improve edge support, that’s not necessarily what we saw with Leesa.

Edge Support TestScoreMax SinkageLying Support
Leesa Hybrid8.46.25″Excellent
Leesa Legend8.85.50″Excellent
Leesa Original8.85.50″Excellent
Leesa Studio8.16.75″Excellent

The average level of sinkage across all mattresses we’ve tested to date (when sitting right at the edge of the mattress) is 4.67″.

All of the Leesa mattresses had significantly more edge sinkage than the average.

The Leesa with the most sinkage is the Leesa Studio—6.75″. The least amount of sinkage was 5.5″ on the Leesa Legend and Leesa Original. The Leesa Hybrid fell somewhere in the middle with 6.25″ of sinkage.

Of all the factors we test, sinkage across all 4 Leesa mattresses is well below the levels we hope for.

Sex Test

Here’s a look at our sex formula:

Sex Score Formula = (Bounce * 0.5) + (Edge Support * 0.2) + (Noise * 0.2) + (Sinkage * 0.05) + (Cooling * 0.05)

We use the following scores, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Leesa Hybrid9.6108.49.01010
Leesa Legend9.6108.89.09.59.5
Leesa Original9.49.58.8109.59.5
Leesa Studio9.09.18.1109.59.5

Looking at these factors, there are some differences when it comes to sex performance.

The Leesa mattresses with the best scores for sex performance were the hybrids—Leesa Hybrid and the Leesa Legend.

Both of these mattresses have high levels of bounce, good cooling, and good pressure relief. They are slightly noisier than 100% foam mattresses, but not a huge dealbreaker in most cases.

The Leesa Original and Leesa Studio had slightly lower scores for lower levels of bounce and poorer edge support. Pressure relief and cooling were still good. And being 100% foam, these mattresses make less noise than the hybrids.

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief on the Leesa was very good, as each of these mattresses have sufficiently thick comfort layers.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Leesa Hybrid104.0″7.0″
Leesa Legend9.54.5″7.0″
Leesa Original9.54.0″6.0″
Leesa Studio9.53.0″7.0″

Oftentimes, a thicker comfort layer is a pretty good indicator of how good the pressure relief will be.

Off-Gassing Test

The off-gassing of these Leesa mattresses was a little longer than average.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellOff-Gassing Period
Leesa Hybrid9.5Strong6 days
Leesa Legend9.7Strong4 days
Leesa Original9.8Strong3 days
Leesa Studio9.7Strong4 days

The average time it takes a mattress to off-gas is 2.84 days, but the Leesa mattresses took anywhere from 4-6 days and had pretty strong smells right out of the box.

Off-gassing is a common process that has to happen with almost every foam mattress, but and once it’s done you shouldn’t notice any smell on the mattress.

So being that it doesn’t affect the long-term experience on the mattress, it’s more of just a minor inconvenience when you first get it.

To speed up this process try leaving bedding off your new mattress for the first few nights and place it in a well-ventilated area.

Company

Leesa has pretty favorable company policies. All four of these mattresses have the same set of policies.

They have a 100-night trial period, a 10-year warranty, and free shipping or returns.

They also have a 1:10 policy for every 10 mattresses solid, a mattress is donated, which may be an important feature for sleepers passionate about philanthropy.

Firmness

MattressFirmnessFeel
Leesa Original6 out of 10Medium Firm
Leesa Hybrid6 out of 10Medium Firm

Leesa Studio6 out of 10Medium Firm

The Leesa Original, Leesa Hybrid, and Leesa Studio are all a 6 out of 10 of the firmness scale.

firmness - 6 out of 10 - medium

That being said, heavy sleepers, especially those who sleep on their stomach or back, may prefer a firmer mattress.

The Leesa Legend is a touch softer than the other three mattresses and may be better suited for lighter sleepers or side sleepers who prefer a bit more contour.

firmness - 5 out of 10 - medium

Support & Sleeping Positions

It’s important to know your ideal firmness prior to purchasing a new mattress.

That being said, in the case of the Leesa I found all four mattress firmnesses to be suitable for a wide range of sleepers.

While the Leesa Legend is slightly better suited to many side sleepers, due to the zonal support and slightly softer feel. For the most part, any of the Leesa mattresses would be appropriate for all sleeping positions and body weights up to the 300 pounds.

Plus-Sized Sleeper?

The one exception, as mentioned above, would be heavy sleepers over 300 lbs who may need a firmer mattress than any mattresses listed here.

The WinkBed Plus, Helix Plus, or Titan Hybrid Luxe are great options for heavyweight sleepers.

Design

Within the Leesa lineup, there are two foam combo mattresses (Original and Studio) and two hybrid mattresses (Hybrid and Legend).

They have a low-profile design with the foam mattresses having a 10″ height and the hybrids being either 11 or 12″.

DesignTypeThicknessCover
Leesa HybridHybrid11″Twill, quilted
Leesa LegendHybrid12″Merino wool, organic cotton
Leesa OriginalCombo Foam10″Twill, seamless

The covers have a different design as well. The Original and Studio use a twill seamless cover, while the Hybrid has a quilted cover.

The Leesa Legend is the only cover in the collection that is hypoallergenic, using organic Merino wool and organic cotton.

Materials

On the inside, both the Leesa Hybrid and Leesa Legend use layers of micro coils or pocketed coils for a hybrid composition.

The Leesa Original and Leesa Studio both use three layers of foam.

Mattress Materials
Leesa HybridFoam + 1 layer of pocket springs
Leesa LegendFoam + 2 layers of pocket springs

You can see the exact layers in the photo set below.

Leesa Studio

Leesa Studio material layers

One distinction to note is the makeup of the Leesa Legend. As you can see, this mattress has a zoned comfort layer below the 1.0″ of memory foam. It’s the only Leesa model currently with this feature.

In the middle of the mattress (away from edges) it uses 1.5″ of poly foam while the edges of the mattress have a 1.5″ layer of micro coils. The zoned approach is designed to improve support by creating a more neutral spinal alignment while lying on your side.

Which Leesa Should You Buy?

So you’ve met all four members of the Leesa family—what now? How do you pick which mattress is right for you?

As a recap, here is a quick summary of the strengths of each mattress:

  • Leesa Original: 4 wins — most sinkage, lowest motion transfer, best edge support, least off-gassing
  • Leesa Hybrid: 4 wins — best overall, best cooling, most bounce, best pressure relief
  • Leesa Legend: 4 wins — least sinkage, fastest response time, best edge support, best for sex
  • Leesa Studio: 2 wins — slowest response time, least bounce

Should You Buy the Leesa Original?

I would recommend the Leesa Original if you’re looking for:

  • Deeper Sinkage. If you prefer the feeling of deeper sinkage and a bit more contour, the Leesa Original may fit the bill. This mattress had 2.09″ of max sinkage during our tests. This can be especially beneficial for side sleepers.
  • Edge support. Among these four Leesas, the Original is one of the best edge supports (tying with the Leesa Legend). With 5.5″ of edge sinkage it’s still slightly worse than the average we see, but good if you specifically want a Leesa.
  • Under $1000. If you’re looking for a queen mattress under $1000, the Leesa Original may be the one. While the basic price is slightly above this, I often see this mattress marked down. Click here to check the current price. If it’s not on sale and you need one now, consider the Leesa Studio to avoid breaking the bank, which is always under $1000.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Leesa Original mattress.

Should You Buy the Leesa Hybrid?

I would recommend the Leesa Hybrid if you’re looking for:

  • More bounce. The coils in the support system of the Leesa Hybrid give it more bounce and a very fast response time.
  • Great cooling. Support coils also gives this mattress an advantage when it comes to cooling performance as the Leesa Hybrid was the top scorer.
  • Fantastic pressure relief. The Leesa Hybrid has a 4.0″ thick comfort layer, which includes a 1.5″ thick layer of memory foam. Memory foam is known for excellent pressure relief, as opposed to a 100% poly foam alternative.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Leesa Hybrid mattress.

Should You Buy the Leesa Legend?

I would recommend the Leesa Legend if you’re looking for:

  • Zoned cooling. Zoned support centrally located in the middle of the mattress gives the Legend good pressure relief and support. It includes poly foam at the core and a 1.5″ layer of micro coils at the perimeter. These coils are combined with the support coils down below.
  • Side sleeper. The zoned coils and slightly softer feel make the Legend ideally suited for most side sleepers.
  • Eco-friendly cover. The cover of the Leesa Legend is made of Merino wool, organic cotton, and other recycled materials. If you’re looking for a more eco-friendly cover that is also hypoallergenic, the Legend is a great pick.
  • Restrained sinkage. The Leesa Legend offers the least amount of sinkage among all four Leesa models. This could be an important feature if you’re specifically looking to avoid that “sinking” feeling.

Click here to learn more or to check the price of the Leesa Legend mattress.

Should You Buy the Leesa Studio?

I would recommend the Leesa Studio if you’re looking for:

  • Lowest cost. The Leesa studio is most similar to the Leesa Original (in material composition and feel), but comes at a lower price tag. If you like the look and feel of the Leesa, but want to save some cash, this is the pick.
  • Most like memory foam. The Leesa Studio has the lowest level of bounce and also the slowest response time. These two attributes alone really make this mattress mimic the properties of traditional memory foam.
