Our Verdict

Both GhostBed and Nectar are quality brands that are well known in the mattress market. GhostBed has foam, hybrid, and memory foam hybrid mattresses. Nectar focuses on memory foam, hybrid, or memory foam hybrid mattresses. Generally, Nectar has more of a memory foam feel, while GhostBed can feel more balanced.

In terms of firmness, GhostBed mattresses are between Medium (5) and Medium-Firm (6.5). The Nectar firmness range is very similar, Soft (4) and Medium-Firm (6). If you are looking for something exclusively firm, neither of these mattresses will be a good fit, but for medium to medium-firm, they’ve got the right feel.

The average prices of mattresses from each of these brands is very similar, with GhostBed coming in at $1,328 and the Nectar average slightly lower, at $1,243. Both of these averages are below the average price across all mattresses tested to date.

When we look at average performance, GhostBed and Nectar are extremely similar. GhostBed’s average performance score of 8.68 and Nectar’s average performance score of 8.70. Ultimately, both of these brands provide a solid balance of price and performance. Depending on exactly what you’re looking for, either brand could be a good match.

These are both the highest-tier mattresses that each brand offers in their lineup. The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid has the higher score (9.15) and the lower price ($1,699). However, the GhostBed is an inch thinner (14″) compared to the Nectar Ultra (15″).

The two mattresses are fairly similar in how they scored across categories, but Nectar earned lower scores in both our edge support and sex tests.

The biggest difference between these models is the feel they provide. The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid has a popular firmness rating of 6 out of 10, which most sleepers will find suitable. The Nectar Ultra Hybrid, on the other hand, is undeniably soft, with a 4 out of 10 rating.

This makes the Nectar Ultra Hybrid less suitable for all sleepers and better suited for side sleeping, given its extremely deep sinkage. It comes with a significant enveloping sensation combined with a dramatic hug from its heavy use of memory foam.

The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid provides a far more standard, balanced feel that back, stomach, and side sleepers can all enjoy. It won’t envelop one’s body the way the Nectar Ultra will, but it still provides relatively deep sinkage.

Choosing between these two will come down to one’s preference for firmness and how intensely they want to be enveloped by their mattress.

Firmness

Looking at all available mattresses we’ve tested, GhostBed offers a firmness range from 5 to 6 out of 10, and Nectar mattresses range from 4 to 6 out of 10.

Both brands mattresses heavily focus on offering a medium to medium-firm feel, which is most suitable for the widest range of sleepers.

However, Nectar does have a single distinctly soft option in the Nectar Ultra Hybrid, while GhostBed does not have a model at this level of softness. If you’re shopping for a particularly firm mattress, you’ll have to look outside GhostBed and Nectar.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

What Firmness Is Right For You2

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test

When it comes to cooling performance, the brands are tied for their average score among the 6 mattresses used in this comparison. However, GhostBed has the mattress with the best cooling performance.

The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

All 3 of the Nectar models in this mini comparison earned a 9.0 score. Their thin covers and modern, quality foam design do enough to perform at an excellent level. However, these models lack any sort of special material infusions or phase change material to add a noticeably cool feel.

The best model in this comparison was the GhostBed Luxe Hybrid, whose design pulls out all the stops to improve breathability and mitigate heat buildup.

Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid Corner
Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid Corner

Most notably, the pocketed coils allow for better airflow, the poly foam is infused with graphite and gel to resist heat, and the pillow top cover includes a notable cool-to-the-touch feel through its cooling fibers.

At a brand level, both performed above average and ended up with equal cooling performance. However, GhostBed can take a minor win over Nectar for having the best individual model, which received a 10/10 cooling performance.

Sinkage Test

When it comes to the level of sinkage GhostBed and Nectar offer, GhostBed is demonstrably deeper, based on our measurements.

The Nectar models have a slightly larger range of options, from minimal to deep. GhostBed models run deeper on average, and their Luxe Foam mattress offers the deepest level of sinkage on this list.

For reference, the average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.23″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Nectar Classic (1.91″) and the Nectar Premier (2.12″) are both good choices for these sleepers, based on their minimal to moderate levels of sinkage.

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the GhostBed Signature Hybrid (2.23″), the GhostBed Luxe Foam (2.72″), the GhostBed Luxe Hybrid (2.49″), or the Nectar Premier Hybrid (2.54″).

Motion Transfer Test

When it comes to motion transfer, GhostBed takes the clear win over Nectar.

The average motion transfer score for the GhostBed models was 8.7 compared to Nectar’s score of 8.0.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

GhostBed Signature Hybrid

Nectar Classic

GhostBed Luxe Foam

Nectar Premier

GhostBed Luxe Hybrid

Nectar Premier Hybrid

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.

By this metric, the 3 Nectar models perform below-average, as a whole. Meanwhile, GhostBed is a solid notch above average.

Part of this can be explained by the overall material thickness between the brands. The Nectar Classic is the thinnest by far (11.5″), and it performed the second-worst. More material, especially in the comfort layer, is beneficial for dispersing motion.

The lowest motion transfer measurement we took was from the GhostBed Luxe Foam. The lack of pocketed coils and an ultra-thick comfort layer are two of the ways it limits motion transfer.

Another factor that we’ve noticed is that thin covers, especially tight ones, can tend to pull towards sinking objects.

All Nectar models have this thin type of cover, and we suspect this has an impact on our motion transfer tests, even if the foams are effective at dispersing energy. This may have been the case for the Nectar Premier Hybrid, which performed the absolute worst out of the 6.

Nectar Premier Hybrid 2024 Materials 3
Nectar Premier Hybrid

By contrast, the quilted cover used in GhostBed models has very little risk of pulling towards sinking objects.

All that said, neither brand is particularly bad when it comes to motion transfer. However, GhostBed is the clear option if you’re specifically looking to avoid being disturbed by your partner’s movements during the night.

Response Test

For response time, we see a slight win in favor of Nectar. The average Nectar model achieved a score of 8.0, whereas GhostBed earned an average score of 7.9.

It’s not a huge difference, and both brands are slower than the average level found across all mattresses tested to date.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.

The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

GhostBed Signature Hybrid

Nectar Classic

GhostBed Luxe Foam

Nectar Premier

GhostBed Luxe Hybrid

Nectar Premier Hybrid

The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8.

Both brands use a substantial amount of foam in their comfort layers. Memory foam, especially, is slower to respond. This is demonstrated with the GhostBed Luxe Foam having the slowest times among these 6 mattresses.

On the other end, the Nectar Premier was the fastest to respond. It is likely in the sweet spot of having a higher quality of foam without an overabundance of it, like with the GhostBed Luxe Foam.

The GhostBed Signature Hybrid was the fastest in terms of mostly recovered time. If you watch the video above closely, you can see how slow it moves to fully recover.

In the end, this difference between the two brands is less dramatic than how much slower they both are compared to the average mattress.

The effect is a slower feel as you shift positions and get out of bed. When it’s more pronounced than we see with either brand here, it can be noticeably difficult to move around on, as it can create a stuck sensation.

Bounce Test

Now let’s talk about bounce. To put it bluntly, both Nectar and GhostBed have low bounce.

Again, these brands tend to have thicker designs that use a lot of memory foam. As we saw with motion transfer, these mattresses are effective at dispersing energy (pulling thin covers notwithstanding).

It’s no surprise that the Nectar Classic, which has the least amount of comfort material, measured the highest amount of bounce.

And while both brands are low, Nectar averaged an average bounce measurement of 7.3″ over GhostBed’s 6.6″.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.

GhostBed Signature Hybrid

Nectar Classic

GhostBed Luxe Foam

Nectar Premier

GhostBed Luxe Hybrid

Nectar Premier Hybrid

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.95″.

None of the models in his comparison has higher bounce than this average. The Nectar Classic was the model with the highest bounce, followed by the Nectar Premier Hybrid, whose pocketed coils most likely helped.

On the other end, the GhostBed Luxe Foam (least motion transfer) had the lowest measurable bounce (5.54″), followed by the Nectar Premier (6.38″) GhostBed Luxe Hybrid (6.92″).

If bounce is important to you, Nectar is the better brand for bounce. When you factor in their slightly faster response time as well, it paints a picture where Nectar has all-around better ease of movement.

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

Edge Support Test

When it comes to edge support, GhostBed takes a clear victory. The average GhostBed edge support score is 9.0 compared to Nectar’s average edge support score of 8.4.

Nectar Premier Hybrid 2024 Edge Support Test

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7.

Based on these numbers, GhostBed distinguished itself as having both better edge support than Nectar and better edge support than the average mattress.

The mattress with the best edge support is the GhostBed Signature Hybrid. It has the right balance of comfort layer thickness and the use of a reinforced perimeter foam. The Nectar Classic achieved the same level of edge support, but it does so with an inch less of material.

Meanwhile, the mattress with the most compression measured at the edge is the Nectar Premier Hybrid. This is marketed as having reinforced coils, meaning stronger/thicker coils in the 2 rows that make up the perimeter. But we don’t see much of an impact in our sitting compression test.

In the end, Nectar models are slightly below average, and one shouldn’t expect particularly good edge support from them. GhostBed models aren’t completely perfect, but they can be relied on to have excellent edge support.

Sex Test

Now let’s talk about Sex performance, as calculated by our weighted formula that factors bounce, edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling.

Because bounce is the highest weighted factor in this formula (60%), we can already have a good idea of the results between GhostBed and Nectar.

Nectar has a higher average sex score of 7.6 over GhostBed’s average sex score of 7.5.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.

This means both brands are below average and not the greatest benefit in the bedroom.

Nectar Classic 2024 Back Sleeping
Nectar Classic Back Sleeping Position

The mattress with the highest score is the Nectar Classic, as it is the mattress with the greatest bounce. For GhostBed, the mattress with the highest sex score is the GhostBed Signature Hybrid.

This isn’t to say amorous activities are not suited for these mattresses by any means. Only that the activities may be more strenuous due to low bounce and more risky due to poorer edge support.

Pressure Relief Test

When it comes to pressure relief, we see the most drastic difference between these two brands yet. Among the models in this 3v3 comparison, GhostBed has an average pressure relief score of 9.7.

Nectar has an average pressure relief score of 8.7.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.

The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

Therefore, both GhostBed and Nectar can be considered to have above-average pressure relief. However, GhostBed models are on another level of performance, as the GhostBed Luxe Foam and GhostBed Luxe Hybrid both received 10/10 scores.

It should be noted that these two are among GhostBed’s most expensive offerings, compared to the Nectar models in this 3v3 comparison, which are closer to the mid-tier for them.

As you can see from the material images above, the Luxe models have 4 layers and 7″ of comfort material. This is both extremely thick and well-balanced from the variety of foam used. The effect is a mattress with nuanced sinkage that allows for one’s spine to achieve proper alignment in all sleeping positions.

The two mid-tier mattresses from Nectar, the Nectar Premier and Nectar Premier Hybrid, both do an excellent job at this as well. They simply lack that one or two extra layers to bring to fully bring their performance to a 10.

Ultimately, both Nectar and Ghostbed prove reliable for excellent pressure relief. If you truly want something special, Ghostbed’s Luxe line is exceptional.

Off-Gassing Test

When we look at the time duration for these mattresses to complete off-gassing, Nectar is the faster brand.

In this 3v3 comparison, Nectar’s models averaged about 5.7 days for odors to fully dissipate. GhostBed mattresses averaged 6.3 days.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Smell TestScoreInitial SmellSmell Duration

GhostBed Luxe Foam8.6Strong5 days
GhostBed Luxe Hybrid8.6Strong5 days
Nectar Classic8.3Strong6 days
Nectar Premier8.9Strong4 days
Nectar Premier Hybrid8.1Strong7 days

The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6.8. So by this measure, both brands are better than average.

Nectar clinches the win, but by less than a day. The quickest mattress to complete its smell duration was the Nectar Premier with 4 days. From GhostBed, both the Luxe Foam and Luxe Hybrid models completed their duration at 5 days.

To perform at this level means that both Nectar and GhostBed manufacture, box/compress, and design their mattress with the consumer in mind to avoid overly strong or long-lasting odors.

Company

When we look at GhostBed and Nectar through the lens of a consumer, there are a number of company policies that are favorable. However, Nectar definitely comes out more favorably with what they offer.

Both companies offer free shipping and returns, as has become the standard in recent years for online shopping.

Where these brands differ is in their trial and warranty periods. GhostBed offers sleepers 101 nights and 25 years, while Nectar offers sleepers a full 365 nights for their trial and a limited lifetime warranty.

Finally, this isn’t a scoring factor, but GhostBed makes their mattresses in the USA while Nectar manufactures their mattresses in China.

To date, we have tested 389+ mattresses from 103 different brands. The average trial length is 177 nights, and the average warranty is 14 years, excluding 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
