Our Verdict
Casper and Purple are two of the most well-known mattress brands to have come out of the direct-to-consumer market over 10 years ago. At this point, they have expanded their product lines and have mattresses in countless brick-and-morter stores across the US and beyond. Today, we are comparing the models available on both of their websites.
Casper started with their all-foam Casper Original model, but their lineup now includes foam, memory foam, hybrids, and memory foam hybrids. Purple, on the other hand, is known for their patented hyper elastic purple grid layer. We consider this a specialty mattress type, and they come in all-foam (plus grid) and coil unit (plus grid) configurations.
The vast majority of both Casper and Purple mattresses have a medium (5) to medium-firm feel (6). Casper has one softer mattress that is a 4.5, and this is the softest among the two brands. Purple has one with a 6.5 firmness rating, which is the firmest model from either brand.
From our performance tests and analysis, Casper mattresses earned an average score of 8.49, and Purple mattresses averaged a score of 8.31. For reference, the average mattress score based on 390+ models tested to date is 8.53.
From a pricing perspective, both brands are more expensive than average. Casper’s average queen-size model costs $1,771, and Purple’s average is $2,199. For reference, the average queen-size price from the 390+ reviewed to date is $1,489.
Ultimately, we found that both brands have mattresses with fantastic performance in key areas, but the value to consumers is lessened by the higher price tag. Though both Purple, with their Purple Original Mattress ($1,499), and Casper, with the Casper Cloud One ($999), have affordable models with above-average performance.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?
The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.
Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.
Between Casper and Purple, the two top recommendations are Casper Dream Max and Purple.
Best Casper
Casper Dream Max

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: Soft (4.5)
The Casper Dream Max is a 13.5″ hybrid mattress with 3 distinct layers of poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It has a soft feel with deep sinkage and very high bounce. Its 8.73 performance score ranks it in the top 43% of all 390+ mattresses tested to date. Its price is $2,470, which is 66% ($978) more expensive than the average mattress. It excels in sex performance and overall ease of movement (response time and high bounce). It is a great option for sleepers of all sleeping positions and most body weights.
Best Purple
Purple

Type: Specialty
Firmness: Medium (5)
The Purple is a 9.5″ specialty mattress with three layers that include a mix of poly foam and the hyper-elastic Purple grid. It has a medium feel with moderate sinkage and very high bounce. This mattress performs in the top 28% of all mattresses to date, with perfect scores for cooling, motion transfer, and fast material response time. Purple also costs 7% less than the average mattress, passing a little over $100 of savings onto sleepers. For a high-quality medium mattress with high bounce, Purple may be the best bed of the bunch.
Both the Casper Dream Max and Purple represent the best-performing mattresses from each brand, but they are quite different. Most notably, their price is roughly $1,000 apart. The Purple is $1,499 for a queen, while the Casper Dream Max is $2,470.
The Casper Dream Max (8.73) also has a slightly lower performance score compared to Purple (8.88). It has less favorable scores in Cooling, Motion Transfer, Response Time, and Off-Gassing. But one area where the Dream Max has a tremendous advantage over Purple is in edge support. It’s also better for sex.
Beyond objective performance, the feel of the two mattresses couldn’t be more different. Purple uses its patented Purple Grid comfort layer, giving the mattress a bit of a floating feel and a medium feel (5 out of 10). The Dream Max is a touch softer (4.5 out of 10 firmness) and offers much deeper sinkage that creates an enveloping sensation.
Finally, the Dream Max has four extra inches of material than the Purple mattress. Heavier-weighted sleepers would most likely benefit from the 13.5″ design from the Dream Max over Purple’s 9.5″ design.
Overall, the two mattresses offer similar levels of pressure relief and offer high levels of bounce and responsiveness. Choosing between these two will come down to the other areas of performance, in which Purple mostly excels over Casper, and one’s preference for poly foam over the patented elastic grid.

Firmness
Looking at all available mattresses we’ve tested, Casper ranges in firmness from 4.5 to 6 out of 10 and Purple mattresses range from 5 to 6.5 out of 10.
Both brands have a fairly narrow range of firmness options. Where we often see mattress companies offer at least one especially soft (4 out of 10) option and one especially firm (7 out of 10) option, the Casper and Purple models all range between 4.5 and 6.5.
The softest option between the brands is the Casper Dream Max at a 4.5 out of 10. The firmest option available is the Purple Flex at a 6.5 out of 10.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.
Casper One
Purple
Casper Dream
Purple Restore Plus
Casper Snow
Purple Restore Premier
The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.
By this measure, both brands generally exceed the average performance. However, the Casper One performed below this benchmark at an 8.0. All other models reached an excellent cooling rating marked by a score of 9.0 or higher.
The best mattresses for cooling performance are the Casper Snow and the Purple Original. In the case of the Purple mattress, its open-celled grid and thin overall design (9.5″) are both huge benefits to breathability and lower heat retention.

In Casper Snow’s case, its design includes both phase change fibers in its cover and phase change spray material in the middle layers. Furthermore, they included heat-deleting bands that run through the middle of the mattress. Theoretically, these bands pull heat away from the surface and increase cooling.
Both Casper and Purple mattresses have great cooling. However, with more foam material comes more cooling issues, if not mitigated by higher-end materials, as we saw in the Casper Snow. Ultimately, Purple has the advantage with its patented elastic grid layer.
Sinkage Test
Sinkage is a preferential factor that helps inform the type of feel one can expect from a mattress. In the case of Casper and Purple, they both offer similar levels of sinkage.
Both brands lean towards more minimal levels of sinkage and create more of a “floating on top of” as opposed to “lying down in” feeling. Purple’s average sinkage measurement is 2.02″ and Casper’s is 2.01″, among the 6 mattresses in this popular model comparison.
However, they each have one model that offers moderate to deep sinkage.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sinkage.
| Sinkage Test | Sinkage Feel | Sinkage Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Casper One | Minimal | 1.77″ |
| Casper Dream | Minimal | 1.89″ |
| Casper Snow | Deep | 2.36″ |
| Purple | Moderate | 2.24″ |
| Purple Restore Plus | Minimal | 1.99″ |
| Purple Restore Premier | Minimal | 1.82″ |
The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images below.
Casper One

Purple

Casper Dream

Purple Restore Plus

Casper Snow

Purple Restore Premier

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.23″.
Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Casper One (1.77″), Casper Dream (1.89″), Purple Restore Plus (1.99″), and Purple Restore Premier (1.82″) all have less sinkage than average and would be best suited for back and stomach positions.
Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Casper Snow (2.36″) or the Purple (2.24″).
Motion Transfer Test
When it comes to motion transfer, a measure of the potential for one sleeper to wake another by moving on the mattress, we see that Casper is better on average, yet Purple has the better individual model.
On average, the Casper models earned a motion transfer score of 8.2, while Purple earned an average score of 8.0.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.
| Motion Transfer Test | Score | Acc. Range |
|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 8.0 | 9.42 m/s² |
| Casper Dream | 8.0 | 9.48 m/s² |
| Casper Snow | 8.7 | 7.95 m/s² |
| Purple | 10 | 2.23 m/s² |
| Purple Restore Plus | 7.2 | 11.27 m/s² |
| Purple Restore Premier | 6.7 | 12.36 m/s² |
The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.
Casper One
Purple
Casper Dream
Purple Restore Plus
Casper Snow
Purple Restore Premier
The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. This score corresponds with an average acceleration range of 8.79 m/s².
Therefore, as a brand, Casper is right about average. However, Purple mattress has the best overall mattress with a 10 out of 10 score and an astonishingly low motion transfer measurement of 2.23 m/s²! The elastic grid, combined with the foam layers below, makes for exceptional motion isolation.

However, the other two Purple models are among the worst in this comparison. The inclusion of a coil unit creates an interaction with the elastic grid that is detrimental to isolating motion.
Casper’s best mattress scored an 8.7 with a lower-than-average acceleration range of 7.95 m/s². While it also includes a coil unit, the 3″ of dense memory foam does a good job dispersing energy before it can shoot through the coils.
In the end, the Purple hybrids perform worse than average when it comes to motion transfer, and couples may want to think twice if they are easily disturbed by movements while they sleep. Casper mattresses are generally no better but no worse than average.
Response Test
When it comes to response time, a measure of the speed at which the top layers recover from compression, Purple mattresses are unquestionably faster than Casper, on average.
Purple averaged a response time score of 10/10. Casper is absolutely no slouch, as is clear when we look at the individual performance scores.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.
| Response Test | Score | Mostly Recovered | Completely Recovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 9.9 | 0.2 seconds | 0.4 seconds |
| Casper Dream | 9.9 | 0.2 seconds | 0.4 seconds |
| Casper Snow | 5.0 | 2.8 seconds | 5.1 seconds |
| Purple | 10 | 0.2 seconds | 0.3 seconds |

The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
Casper One
Purple
Casper Dream
Purple Restore Plus
Casper Snow
Purple Restore Premier
The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8.
The Purple, Purple Restore Plus, and Purple Restore Premier are all tied with the maximum score for response time, as they recovered as quickly as is possible for us to measure. This is effectively instant.
The Casper One and Casper Dream are also lightning quick to recover back to shape, but they have just a little extra time to fully reform back to neutral. However, the Casper Snow’s memory foam layer is fundamentally a different class of foam, and it is among the slowest response time measurements we’ve ever seen.
In the end, Purple is ultra-responsive across the board, while Casper models vary, based on the type of foam used in the comfort layer (possibly correlated with the higher tiers).
Bounce Test
When it comes to bounce, Purple takes the win once again. This is a preferential factor, but bounce plays a large role in how lively or dead a mattress can feel while moving around.
The 3 Purple models averaged a bounce height of 11.5″, which can be described as high.
Casper models were more in the moderate range, but they still achieved an average height of 9.7″.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.
| Bounce Test | Bounce Feel | Bounce Height |
|---|---|---|
| Casper One | Moderate | 8.77″ |
| Casper Dream | High | 10.73″ |
| Casper Snow | Moderate | 9.54″ |
| Purple | Very High | 12.79″ |
| Purple Restore Plus | Very High | 12.20″ |
| Purple Restore Premier | Moderate | 9.46″ |
The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
Casper One
Purple
Casper Dream
Purple Restore Plus
Casper Snow
Purple Restore Premier
The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.77″.
Mattresses with more bounce than average include the Casper Dream (10.73″), Casper Snow (9.54″), Purple (12.79″), Purple Restore Plus (12.2″), and Purple Restore Premier (9.46″).
Mattresses with less or equal bounce than average include the Casper One (8.77″). The memory foam used in this lower-level model doesn’t quite reach the same heights as the others; however, it is far from creating issues for general movement.

My ideal bounce range is between 8-12″, but I do like to see somewhere between 10″ or higher when it comes to sex performance.
Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increased sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.
Edge Support Test
For edge support, we see a noticeable difference between Casper and Purple. Here, Casper takes the win, but only on average.
On average, the 3 popular Casper models earned a combined edge support score of 8.8, whereas the Purple models only earned an 8.3.
When we look at individual performance, we see that two of the Purple models outperformed all the rest.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.
| Edge Support Test | Score | Sitting Sinkage | Lying Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 8.2 | 3.50″ | Fair |
| Casper Dream | 8.9 | 4.00″ | Excellent |
| Casper Snow | 9.4 | 3.25″ | Excellent |

The level of edge support is documented in the images below.
Casper One

Purple

Casper Dream

Purple Restore Plus

Casper Snow

Purple Restore Premier

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7.
The Purple Restore Plus and Purple Restore Premium both earned near-perfect edge support scores (10 and 9.9). This is another instance where we see extreme variation in performance between the hybrid purple models and the all-foam version. The models that use coil units are also reinforced by firm support foam that surrounds the perimeter. This reinforced edge is incredibly robust.

The Purple models also use a separate perimeter foam around their elastic grid. Despite this, the Purple Original saw a near-total collapse at the edge and earned one of the lowest scores we’ve seen to date.
For Casper, the Casper Snow model uses a similar reinforced perimeter foam. We see slightly more compression, likely due to its use of memory foam over the support foam in the perimeter of the Purple mattresses.
Ultimately, both brands do a fantastic job with edge support, but we see variation from each based on pricing tier. If you want top-tier edge support, you’ll have to pay for the higher tiers.
Sex Test
When it comes to sex performance, we use a weighted formula that includes 5 different factors – some we’ve already discussed.
Bounce and edge support are among the heaviest weighted factors. Both brands generally performed well in these areas, so we see fairly close sex scores between them. However, Purple takes the win for having the higher average score.
The 3 Purple models earned an average sex performance score of 9.2, with a range between 8.8 to 9.9.
The Casper models earned an average sex score of 8.8, with a range from 8.3 to 9.1.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.
| Sex Test | Sex Score | Bounce | Edge Support | Noise | Pressure Relief | Cooling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 8.3 | 8.0 | 9.4 | 10 | 6.0 | 8.0 |
| Casper Dream | 9.1 | 9.2 | 8.8 | 10 | 8.0 | 9.0 |
| Casper Snow | 8.9 | 8.5 | 9.7 | 10 | 9.0 | 10 |
| Purple | 8.8 | 10 | 4.1 | 10 | 9.0 | 10 |
| Purple Restore Plus | 9.9 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
| Purple Restore Premier | 8.8 | 8.4 | 9.7 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. By this measure, all 6 mattresses among Casper and Purple perform above-average for sex.
The very best mattress for sex is the Purple Restore Plus. The hyper-elastic grid combined with the pocketed coils makes for an extremely lively, bouncy surface that is also safe for use at the edge.

From Casper, the Casper Dream received the best score for sex for much of the same reasons. It just didn’t quite reach the same heights as the Restore Plus.
In the end, we can say that both Casper and Purple are fantastic mattresses for amorous activities, AKA the dance without pants.
Pressure Relief Test
When it comes to pressure relief, we look for a measure of comfort, support, and the potential for pressure point buildup. Here, we see Purple has a massive win over Casper, generally speaking.
Among the mattresses in this 3v3 comparison, the Purple models averaged a pressure relief score of 9.0, where the Caspers earned a 7.7
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.
| Pressure Relief Test | Score | Comfort Layer | Support Layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 6.0 | 3.00″ | 7.00″ |
| Casper Dream | 8.0 | 3.00″ | 8.50″ |
| Casper Snow | 9.0 | 3.00″ | 8.50″ |
| Purple | 9.0 | 5.50″ | 4.00″ |
| Purple Restore Plus | 9.0 | 5.00″ | 8.00″ |
| Purple Restore Premier | 9.0 | 3.00″ | 10.00″ |
The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.
While none of the Purple models managed to reach an outstanding rating, the Purple, Purple Restore Plus, and Purple Restore Premier have consistently above-average pressure relief.
The Casper Snow managed to reach this same score of 9.0, and it is the best among the 3 analyzed in this deep dive. The Snow uses a solid 3″ of dense memory foam that is demonstrably of better quality than less expensive Casper models, like the Casper One.

Typically, more material, especially in the comfort layer, is better for pressure relief. However, the Purple mattress is an exception to this. At only 9.5″ of total thickness, it achieves an excellent level of performance.
It should be noted that heavier-weighted sleepers may not have the same high-level experience, as they’re more likely to push through the special Purple grid and make contact with the support foam below.

The Casper models aren’t the thickest designs either. However, the quality of the foam does seem to increase at every pricing tier (of which these 3 models represent distinct levels, low, medium, and high). The top end of their lineup manages to reach fantastic pressure relief.
In conclusion, the Purple mattresses, with the hyper-elastic grid, achieve better performance than average. However, we find they hit a limit before reaching the highest possible pressure relief. Heavier sleepers should also opt for the Restore Plus or Restore Premier to ensure ideal relief.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing is our objective measurement for how long an unboxed/delivered mattress takes to dissipate any lingering smells. Here, Casper and Purple are equally mediocre.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.
| Off-Gassing Test | Score | Initial Smell | Smell Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 6.7 | Strong | 12 days |
| Casper Dream | 7.8 | Strong | 8 days |
| Casper Snow | 4.4 | Strong | 20 days |
| Purple | 8.9 | Strong | 4 days |
| Purple Restore Plus | 7.2 | Strong | 10 days |
| Purple Restore Premier | 2.8 | Strong | 26 days |
The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6.8 days.
On average, both brands earned an off-gassing score of 6.3. The 3 Casper models had an average smell duration of 13.3 days, with a range of 8 to 20 days.
The Purple mattresses had the same average smell duration, with a range from 4 to 26 days.
Suffice it to say, a sleeper can expect to wait about a week for their mattress to stop smelling, but the majority of Casper and Purple mattresses will take more than that. In some cases, they will take 20 days or more.
The only model that managed to dissipate odors quicker than average was the Purple Original, with a smell duration of only 4 days.

No matter how long it takes, once it’s gone, it will never be an issue again. However, it can be bothersome for those trying to enjoy their new mattress purchase to wait excessive amounts of time.
If you’re someone especially sensitive to synthetic odors, the Purple Original or the Casper Dream will be your best bets.
Company
Finally, we’ve come to comparing the various company policies in terms of favorability for the consumer.
Casper offers a 100-night trial period, a 10-year warranty, free shipping, and free returns. The trial and warranty periods could be a little longer, based on other brands we’ve seen, but this earned them a solid 9.0 score.
Purple offers a 100-night trial period, a 10-year warranty, and free shipping, but not free returns. In fact, their return fee depends on the line of mattress, with the Restore line being $250 (it can actually get up to $350 for the Rejuvenation line, but we’ve left it off the chart since we haven’t reviewed one of those yet).
The fee of $250 is among the highest we’ve seen to date.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding company policies.
| Company | Casper | Purple |
|---|---|---|
| Score | 9.0 | 7.2 |
| Trial Period | 100 nights | 100 nights |
| Warranty | 10 years | 10 years |
| Shipping | $0 | $0 |
| Returns | $0 | $150-$350 |
| Country of Origin | USA | USA |
To date, we have tested 391+ mattresses from 103 different brands. The average trial length is 175 nights and the average warranty is 14 years, excluding 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
On the whole, both Casper and Purple offer fairly generous company policies to the consumer, with the exception of Purple tanking their score with a high return fee. For this reason, Casper takes the win for company score.

Disclosure – Derek Hales has a history with Casper that some may view as relevant to his reviews of Casper products. In 2016, Casper Sleep sued Derek Hales in federal court over his reviews of its products. In 2017, the lawsuit ended with a settlement. That was a long time ago and Casper is under different management now.
