Which states have the best sex? Our nationwide study found that, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the least satisfied and 10 being the most, the national average score that people rated their sex lives was 4.770. This is a failing score on most rubrics.
The 4.770 national average also represents the median value, with 25 states having a higher average score and 25 states having a lower one. Read on for the full results of our nationwide survey:

From a national standpoint, 23.6% of Americans rated their sex life a 1 out of 10. Similarly, when we recently polled Americans on how often they were having sex, a combined 21.8% reported they do not have sex at least once a month, with 5.6% reporting they never have sex at all. This suggests frequency of intercourse could be a major factor.
In contrast, just 10.6% of respondents rated their sex life a 10 out of 10. This is less than half of the polar opposite, with 45.6% saying they have sex at least once a week and 7.8% saying they have sex at least daily. More than half of Americans are having sex at least once a week, so while frequency is a factor for some, perhaps it is not as meaningful a statistic to the majority of Americans or their ability to enjoy their sex life.
Which States Have the Best Sex?
Oklahoma had the highest average score of 6.792 when rating the quality of their sex lives. Birthplace of recognizable sex symbols such as Brad Pitt and Olivia Munn, it is understandable why the state is so satisfied with their coitus. It seems the wind is not the only thing coming right behind the rain.
Oklahoma is one of just seven states that gave an average sex life score higher than 6 out of 10. The others were Kentucky, Texas, Maine, Iowa, Louisiana and Arkansas. With all but two of those states being in the Bible Belt, perhaps the southern US is not as conservative as its reputation.
Which States Have the Worst Sex?
Three states had an average sex life score below 3 out of 10: Virginia, New Mexico and Alaska. This is an interesting combination because the climates of these three states are wildly different.
Furthermore, in our previous study, Alaska and New Mexico allegedly had the most sex! Perhaps this means the residents of those states are insatiable, or perhaps they are just taking the opportunity to figure out what satisfies them.
Why Are People Unsatisfied with their Sex Lives?
Several studies have shown Americans in the 2020s are having less sex than most generations before them. Scientific American conducted one such study, finding some correlation between decreased sex frequency and pursuit of hobbies such as video games and social media.
Their study goes on to suggest that, for many others, the reason may be fear. Arousal manifests itself differently in everyone. People are afraid of consenting to something they may not be comfortable with, to satisfy someone else’s kinks, some of which may be aggressive. A decrease in alcohol consumption could likewise be connected to the dropping statistic as alcohol is known for affecting a person’s inhibitions.
The LA Times reports that there is some level of arrested development. When previous generations attended college they embraced relationships and sexuality. Now, many students are leaving high school without feeling ready. This could be related to the social restrictions these individuals grew up with during the COVID-19 pandemic or a growing trend of using technology for communication rather than in-person interaction. However, there is also a growing trend of young adults identifying as asexual which should not be overlooked.
How Can Americans Have Better Sex?
The fact of the matter is that if someone is dissatisfied with their sex life, the first step is opening the lines of communication with their partner. GQ recommends couples engage in more non-sexual physical contact. They suggest busy couples feel as though what little free time they have has to be used for sex, often resulting in one or both partners feeling dissatisfied.
Couples may also want to try a better mattress for sex. This could improve the experience by allowing love-makers to feel more comfortable in different positions, for longer lengths of time, than they might otherwise.

Methodology:
Based on an original survey of 1,087 Americans conducted by NapLab. Respondents were asked two questions: “On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you score your sex life?” and “In which state do you live?”
