Performance Tests

At NapLab, we put each mattress to the test.

We test 9 different factors that impact the comfort and feel of the mattress. Testing categories include:

Motion TransferExtremely Low
Response TimeExtremely Fast
BounceModerate
Edge SupportVery Good
SexExcellent

Cooling Test

Cooling on the Zoma mattress was excellent. Over the duration of our cooling test, I did not feel warm or experience any heat retention hot spots.

Baseline Temp.

71.2° F

Max Temp.

84.8° F

Ending Temp.

76.2° F

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

While the mattress is built from 100% foam, it uses a number of different features to help improve cooling.

First up, the fabric on the cover itself is a thin knit, which is highly breathable.

Second, the top layer of gel memory foam has cooling channels cut into the foam itself. This further helps to improve airflow and breathability, keeping sleepers cooler

Lastly, the foams themselves utilize an open cell structure. This type of poly foam formulation helps to prevent heat retention and improve airflow throughout the foam.

These three foam design elements all work together to create a cooler sleeping surface.

You can see the results of our heat dissipation test below.

Sinkage Test

In our pressure point sinkage test, we measured a total sinkage depth of 2.09”. This is slightly less than the average sinkage across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 2.22”.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Zoma All Foam sinkage test
Zoma sinkage test

Despite being a little less than the average, the Zoma mattress is still very much within the “moderate” sinkage depth.

It’s enough to provide plenty of pressure relief and comfort, but not so deep as to create support problems.

10

Motion Transfer Test

The Zoma mattress has a very low level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 2.72 m/s².

This is significantly lower and better than the average motion transfer across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 5.76 m/s².

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

Mattresses with an acceleration range of less than 5.0 m/s² are considered to have low motion transfer, but the Zoma really pushes it far beyond that.

Max. Acceleration

1.18 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-1.54 m/s²

Accel. Range

2.72 m/s²

It’s somewhat expected as the Zoma mattress is slightly softer, has thick memory and poly foam layers, and it’s an all-foam design. These three factors work together to keep motion extraordinarily low.

If you sleep with a partner who is easily disturbed by motion during the night then the Zoma can be a great option.

Zoma All Foam motion transfer chart
Zoma motion transfer chart

If you look at the motion transfer chart above (which charts the accelerometer data) you can see most of the motion occurs during the first 0.3 seconds.

Between 0.4 and 0.6 seconds that motion is cut in half, and then rapidly dissipates back to near zero thereafter.

10

Response Test

The response time on the Zoma mattress is fast, but also not the fastest we’ve tested. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.4 seconds, with a full recovery response of 0.7 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.4 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.7 sec.

This is a good bit faster than the average, which is a mostly recovered time of 0.60 seconds and a full material recovery of 0.95 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The fastest response times we’ve recorded to date are 0.2 seconds to mostly recover and 0.3 seconds to fully recover. Most of those mattresses are non-memory foam mattresses.

Memory foam, even more advanced formulations like the one used in Zoma, are still generally going to respond a little slower compared to poly foam, latex, and pocketed coils.

For most sleepers, the response time on the Zoma mattress should be perfectly fine. It’s still quite quick, relatively speaking.

However, if you want the absolute fastest response time you may want to check out the Ghostbed Luxe, Leesa Legend, Purple Hybrid, or Winkbed mattresses, all of which are tied for 1st as the fastest responding mattresses (0.2 seconds to mostly recover).

Bounce Test

The Zoma mattress has a moderate level of bounce. In our bounce tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.53”.

Max. Depth

5.97″

Max. Rebound

2.56″

Total Bounce

8.53″

This is a little below the average bounce height of 9.48”. Despite being a little lower than average, the Zoma mattress bounce height is still within the “moderate” range.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Zoma All Foam max bounce depth
Zoma max bounce depth

Max Bounce Height

Zoma All Foam max bounce height
Zoma max bounce height

For most sleepers, this level of bounce should be sufficient to aid in ease of movement, improve sex, and offer a comfortable feel. I will say, I am surprised at the level of bounce relative to the motion transfer.

Generally, with lower motion transfer comes lower bounce. However, the Zoma still maintains a fairly high level of bounce despite the incredibly low motion transfer.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Despite being a little below average, it’s still well within the “moderate” bounce height range, which is 8-12”.

At this level of bounce, most sleepers will find it sufficient enough for helping to aid ease of movement and improve sex performance.

9.3

Edge Support Test

Overall, I found edge support on the Zoma mattress to be pretty good. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a maximum compression of 4.5”.

This is better than the average edge support compression of 4.69”.

Max Sinkage

4.5″

Lying Support

Excellent

While it is better than average, it’s still not what I would call great. Generally, I like to see edge support at 4.0” or less. Edge support while lying was good overall, but, like sitting edge support, leaves something to be desired.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Zoma All Foam edge support with vest
Zoma edge support with vest

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress without my weighted vest I felt well-supported. I also felt no sensation of being rolled out of the mattress.

However, when I wear the weighted vest and bring my weight up to 200 pounds there is a significant level of sinkage and compression. As you can see from the photos, there is a huge curvature of the materials.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

It’s not all the way to a complete collapse of support, but it’s enough to concern me. All of that said, as long as you sleep a few inches from the edge of the mattress the support is far better.

However, if you are a heavyweight sleeper and also sleep on or near the edge you might not find the mattress supportive enough.

9.6

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce60%9.6Extremely Low
Edge Support20%9.3Exceptional
Noise10%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.5Exceptional
Cooling5%9.5Exceptional

For the Zoma, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.6.

This mattress has good bounce, which is one of the most important features for good sex. Edge support is good, but not the best and we noticed quite a bit of compression when sitting or lying directly at the edges.

Zoma edge sitting

While this may not be a huge factor for you, it’s definitely worth mentioning when considering all aspects of sex performance.

Noise, pressure relief, and cooling were all acceptable—nothing to really note in these categories.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test

Moving right along, let’s talk about pressure relief. Pressure relief on the Zoma mattress is excellent.

Comfort Layer

4.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

The Zoma uses 4.0” of comfort material, including memory foam and poly foam, which creates an amazingly comfortable feel.

The top gel memory foam layer is also zoned, providing a little more support for your hips and midsection, and a little less support for your legs and upper body.

This zoning works well with the broader material design to deliver excellent pressure relief.

9.4

Off-Gassing Test

We were surprised by the level of off-gassing on the Zoma mattress. Upon immediate unboxing there was a strong smell.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

8 days

Zoma All Foam lying on mattress
Zoma lying on mattress

The smell lingered on the mattress for 8 full days before dissipating to a negligible level.

This is quite a bit longer than the average across all of our tests, which is 2.76 days.

If you are sensitive to strong smells you may want to allow the Zoma mattress to air out for a few days in an open well-ventilated area before trying to sleep on it.

9.8

Company

The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.

Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

Zoma was founded in 2019 in Scottsdale, Arizona with a specific design that caters to athletes and the need for muscle recovery. They offer standards like a 100-night trial period, 10-year warranty, and free shipping and returns.

One note to mention—they do have a 30-night break-in period which covers the first month that you have the mattress.

During this time frame, you cannot request a free return. This is not an unusual policy and if you’re really in a pinch, Zoma does offer returns with a $99 fee.

If you can stand to wait past the first month, you can request a return for no charge.

How firm is the Zoma mattress?

The Zoma is a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is a tad softer than a medium-firm, which typically falls around a 6 out of 10, based on the tests we’ve performed of comparative brands.

firmness - 5 out of 10 - medium

Being a 5 out of 10, the Zoma has a touch of softness to it, but also is firm enough to be fully supportive and provide pressure relief.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Zoma mattress is excellent. Throughout our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

The Zoma’s 5 out of 10 firmness makes it a good choice for a wide variety of body types and sleeping positions.

Sleeper WeightStomach SleepersSide SleepersBack Sleepers
Under 150 lbs.YesYesYes
150-250 lbs.Yes YesYes
250-300 lbs.YesYesYes

For heavy sleepers, especially those over 200 pounds that sleep at or near the edge, you may find the edge support to be lacking.

However, this is a pretty narrow use case and in general, it’s recommended to sleep closer to the middle of the mattress for ideal support.

Design

The Zoma mattress is an all-foam mattress made of three layers and designed for muscle recovery while you sleep.

Zoma makes a big point of this in their marketing and I would say that most of their claims are true. This mattress does take muscle recovery into consideration when looking at the overall design of the Zoma.

Some of the features of the Zoma mattress designed for athletes include:

  • Gel memory foam promotes hug and contour, while limiting heat retention
  • Convoluted foam promotes cooling and breathability
  • Excellent pressure relief with a 4.0″ thick comfort layer

NOTE: As a note, this is not to say that other mattresses with similar materials are not good for athletes. There is not really anything that makes the Zoma feel like it is ONLY designed for athletes, but that it is designed in a way to help anyone sleep better. If you sleep better, bodies are better able to recover from exercise or hard workouts.

Materials

The Zoma uses three distinctly different layers of foam with each layer providing a different purpose. Here is the breakdown from top to bottom.

  • 2.0″ gel memory foam
  • 2.0″ poly foam
  • 8.0″ support foam

The Cover

The cover on the Zoma is a textile blend of spandex and cotton. It is a solid gray on the top with a gradient geometric design on the sides of the mattress.

Zoma All Foam mattress cover

It is soft and stretchy, designed with breathability in mind so that sleepers can easily engage with the convoluted foam below.

The Comfort Layer

The complete comfort layer is a combination of two different foams—one 2.0″ layer of convoluted gel memory foam followed by a 2.0″ layer of poly foam.

Zoma All Foam gel memory foam layer

The memory foam has a softer feel while the poly foam below is more of a transitional layer. Both are important for overall comfort and muscle recovery, as is the aim of the Zoma mattress.

The Support Layer

The support layer is an 8.0″ slab of support foam. This foam is denser than either of the other two foams used above it.

Product Evolution

The Zoma mattress was released in 2019 and has not undergone any major design changes since it first hit the market.

As this mattress ages, we will be sure to come back and update this section if / when changes are more.

How is Zoma Different?

The Zoma mattress has higher overall performance than average while also coming in at a lower price point—22% less than the average memory foam mattress.

This mattress has slightly better cooling with less sinkage, less motion transfer, and less bounce than average.

Edge support struggles a bit with slightly deeper sinkage when sitting directly at the edge, but not a huge differentiating factor for most sleepers.

Zoma Hybrid vs. Zoma

The Zoma mattress was launched in 2019 as an all-foam version (the original) and then also in 2020 as a hybrid of foam and coils. You can read our Zoma Hybrid review here.

Both the Hybrid and the all-foam mattresses have a 2.0″ layer of gel memory foam on the top, but there are bigger differences below the surface.

Check out the side-by-side comparison below.

For Hybrid

Zoma Hybrid material layers

Zoma Hybrid

Zoma + Coils

If you like the feel of the Zoma, but want a little extra bounce, the Zoma Hybrid could be a solid option. The Zoma Hybrid has a slightly slower response time, 0.5″ more point sinkage, and slightly higher motion transfer levels as well.

For Faster Response Time

Nest Bedding Quail material layers

Nest Bedding Quail

9″ Thick Profile

The Quail by Nest Bedding offers a faster response time by about 2X (mostly recovered by 0.2 seconds). It also has slightly more sinkage than the Zoma. The trade off is that the edge support is not as good.

For Edge Support

GhostBed Luxe material layers

GhostBed Luxe

Foam Mattress with 3.75″ Sinkage

For better edge support, the GhostBed Luxe is a great option. Like the Zoma, it also has 4.0″ of comfort material, but it only has 3.75″ of point sinkage when measured directly at the edge. The is 0.75″ less sinkage than we tested on the Zoma.
