Considerations

  • Worse cooling performance
  • Only 8.0″ thick, not great for pressure relief
  • Not best for heavier-weighted sleepers

Our Verdict

The SleepOnLatex is an 8.0″ latex foam mattress. It contains three layers of organic latex foam—a 2.0″ comfort layer, a 2.0″ transitional layer, and a 4.0″ support layer.

This mattress has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. For deep sinkage that still has a fast material response time, this mattress could be advantageous.

SleepOnLatex comes in a single firmness—6 out of 10, giving the mattress a medium-firm feel.

In our performance tests, the SleepOnLatex mattress earned an overall score of 8.11. This ranks in the bottom 20% of all mattresses tested to date (280+ mattresses tested).

But the lower performance also allows for a lower price tag, coming in at only $999 for a queen mattress. This is 43% less than the average latex foam mattress, offering a savings of $741. If you’re looking for latex foam and don’t want to spend over $1K this is a good option.

How is SleepOnLatex Different?

The SleepOnLatex mattress has an overall performance that is worse than the average mattress, but also a price tag that is less than average as well—43% less than the average latex foam mattress for a savings of $741 (on a queen mattress).

Advantages

Besides the low price, the only other advantage of the SleepOnLatex is a faster-than-average material response time. What you’re getting here is a budget latex foam mattress with worse performance. But if you’re tight on cash and want a latex foam mattress, this is about your only option.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. Off-gassing is also right at the average (6 days) making it a bit of a neutral factor.

Disadvantages

There are many disadvantages to the SleepOnLatex including worse cooling performance, higher levels of motion transfer, and lacking edge support (4.5″ of sinkage when seated at the edge).

It’s only an 8.0″ mattress, 4.0″ thinner than the average mattress thickness. This thinner profile creates some issues with pressure relief and support, especially for heavy people and side sleepers.

Sleeponlatex Relaxing

Lastly, both the trial and warranty are shorter than average.

8.0

Cooling Test

The SleepOnLatex has good cooling. During our tests, I felt a slight level of heat retention around my body, but nothing dramatic and certainly not enough that I would call it “hot”.

Baseline Temp.

75.2° F

Max Temp.

90.5° F

Ending Temp.

79.8° F

Overall, the mattress seemed to breathe well, the max temperature was reasonable, and the heat dissipation curve was good. Latex as a material type does a good job at mitigating and reducing heat retention. The SleepOnLatex is 8.0” of all latex foam split across 3 layers.

Max Temp.

Sleeponlatex Before Cooling Test
Sleeponlatex Before Cooling Test

Ending Temp

Sleeponlatex After Cooling Test
Sleeponlatex After Cooling Test
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.5° F. This is 0.8° more than the average of 89.7° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 6.7 degrees from minutes 0 to 1. This is 2.0° cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.7°.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Sleeponlatex Heat Dissipation Chart
Sleeponlatex Heat Dissipation Chart

I was pleased that the max temp was only slightly above average and even more pleased that the minute-by-minute heat dissipation was notably cooler than average.

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is good.

Sinkage Test

The SleepOnLatex has deep sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.37″. This is 0.22″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.15″, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Depth

2.37″

Sinkage Feel

Deep

The mattress creates a more generalized body contouring hug. Both heavier and lighter parts of my body are sinking down into the mattress. Unlike memory foam, which creates a dramatic and exacting hug around the body, the SleepOnLatex creates a body hug that is very restrained.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Sleeponlatex Sinkage Test
Sleeponlatex Sinkage Test

The hug is more of a generalized circular depression where you lie. It’s also a highly responsiveness hug, so the materials quickly change and adapt to your movements.

This is also in contrast to many memory foams, which can sometimes take several seconds to adjust to your new position. The high responsiveness makes it easier to move around on the mattress.

6.9

Motion Transfer Test

The SleepOnLatex has a high level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 11.88 m/s². This is 35% more motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

5.45 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-6.43 m/s²

Accel. Range

11.88 m/s²

The higher-than-average motion transfer is exactly what we expect from an all foam latex mattress. The average motion transfer for all latex mattresses we’ve tested is 10.90 m/s².

Latex as a material type simply creates more motion than most other mattress types. The material has high bounce, high resiliency, high springiness, high responsiveness, and a high level of jiggliness. All of these factors are contributing to a higher level of motion.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.14 seconds. Motion drops off thereafter, but we do see a secondary motion spike from 0.43 to 0.57 seconds. Finally, by 0.86 seconds, we return to near-zero levels of energy.

Sleeponlatex Motion Transfer Chart
Sleeponlatex Motion Transfer Chart

Both the motion intensity and motion duration are more than average. Unfortunately, higher motion is simply a common and expected weakness among latex mattresses. So this isn’t necessarily a problem with SleepOnLatex specifically, but rather most latex mattresses.

You can see our complete list of latex mattress reviews here.

10

Response Test

The SleepOnLatex has an extremely fast material response. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.22 seconds faster than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.65 seconds faster than the average of 0.95 seconds.

This is effectively an instant material responsiveness and it’s tied for 1st as the fastest responsive mattress we’ve tested to date (tied with several other high-performance mattresses).

The near-instant material response means it’s easy to move around on the mattress and easy to change positions. In addition, a slower material response can negatively impact sex. The fast response ensures that there won’t be an issue with the SleepOnLatex.

Bounce Test

The SleepOnLatex has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.51″. This is 0.94″ less bounce than the average of 9.45″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

5.54″

Max. Rebound

2.97″

Total Bounce

8.51″

Typically, latex mattresses will have more bounce than what we measured here (average bounce for latex mattresses is 9.32”). In the case of SleepOnLatex, the level of bounce is more restrained due to the relative thickness of the mattress.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Sleeponlatex Bounce Depth
Sleeponlatex Bounce Depth

Max Bounce Height

Sleeponlatex Bounce Rebound
Sleeponlatex Bounce Rebound

Thinner mattresses often create less bounce, especially in the case of all foam latex mattresses (average bounce for mattresses 8” thick and thinner is 8.82”). Even so, at 8.51” it’s not a low level of bounce by any stretch.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Ideally, I like to see 8-12” of total bounce height. Bounce at this level is enough to facilitate ease of movement and sex performance, while not being so high as to dramatically impact motion transfer.

In my view, the SleepOnLatex mattress can be a great choice for those who want a latex mattress but want less bounce. Overall, I’m pleased with the level of bounce and don’t expect it will be an issue for most sleepers.

8.1

Edge Support Test

The SleepOnLatex has good sitting edge support and good lying edge support. In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.50″. This is 0.44″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.06″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max Sinkage

4.50″

Lying Support

Good

While support earned a good score, it’s also clear that the mattress doesn’t rise to the level of “excellent” or “outstanding” edge support. Latex often struggles with edge support and that’s exactly what we experienced here.

The fact it’s only 8” tall is definitely contributing to the weaker edge support performance. The simple fact is that more material is required to create the most robust edge support, in most cases.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sleeponlatex Edge Support Test

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Sleeponlatex Edge Support With Vest
Sleeponlatex Edge Support With Vest

Lying edge support was a similar story. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt reasonably well supported in all sleeping positions. Even so, edge support isn’t as robust as many other types of mattresses we’ve tested.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Sleeponlatex Edge Support Back Sleeping

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Sleeponlatex Edge Support Back Sleeping With Vest

In my view, this is less a problem with the edge support specifically and more a problem with support in general. At the end of the day, this is only an 8.0” mattress, which again, in my view, is just not thick enough to create sufficient support for adult bodies.

The edge simply feels a bit weaker while lying directly on it, which doesn’t create great support. I would have liked to have seen at least a 10” total profile, which likely would have created better edge support and better support in general.

8.0

Sex Test

The SleepOnLatex has good sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal. In a more neutral space, we have pressure relief and cooling, which were both good, but also far from great.

Similarly, we have edge support. While the measured edge support earned the SleepOnLatex a good score, it’s also clear that it’s not as supportive as many other types of mattresses.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%7.8Moderate
Edge Support20%8.1Good
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%8.0Good
Cooling5%8.0Good

Only having 8.0” of total material greatly limits the level of support achievable by the edge. In addition, latex as a material type simply isn’t great when it comes to supporting the absolute edge of the mattress.

Sleeponlatex Edge Sitting
Sleeponlatex Edge Sitting

Last, we have bounce, which we measured at 8.51”. This is within the moderate range, but also notably lower than the average. When it comes to sex, more bounce is always better.

Needless to say, the SleepOnLatex would have benefited greatly from more bounce when it comes to the dance without pants. Overall, sex performance on the mattress is good and yet leaves much to be desired.

8.0

Pressure Relief Test

The SleepOnLatex has a good level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body. Overall, the mattress is comfortable, even if it doesn’t rise to the “excellent” or “outstanding” levels of pressure relief.

Comfort Layer

4.0″

Support Layer

4.0″

The mattress is equipped with 4.0″ of comfort material. Those 4.0” are split across 2 separate 2.0” latex layers. While this isn’t the highest-end, highest-quality latex I’ve ever seen, it’s not bad by any stretch.

On the positive side, the latex is certified organic. That said, SleepOnLatex does not disclose the specific latex type (most latex is Dunlop or Talalay), which I find quite disappointing.

Sleeponlatex Open Cover
Sleeponlatex Open Cover

The SleepOnLatex has 0.08″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.08″, based on all of our tests to date.

My chief concern with pressure relief simply comes down to the quantity of material. This mattress is only 8.0” thick, which in my view just isn’t thick enough to meet the comfort needs of many adult sleepers.

The heavier the body, the more likely that the mattress will not be comfortable. As a general rule, latex mattresses that are 10” thick and thinner are not going to work for sleepers 250 pounds and up. That said, if you are a lighter weighted sleeper you may not find this to be a problem.

Off-Gassing Test

The SleepOnLatex had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 6 days. This is 0.4 days less than the average of 6.4 days.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

The mattress has a rubbery smell, which is typical of other natural latex mattresses we’ve tested. While the odor is strong, it’s not offensive in the same way that many memory and polyurethane foam mattresses are.

I will also add that the SleepOnLatex comes shipped rolled and compressed in paper packaging, not the traditional plastic package that most mattresses arrive in. If you’re particularly conscious of plastic exposure, this may be an interesting advantage.

How firm is SleepOnLatex?

The SleepOnLatex mattress has a firmness of 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale and gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the SleepOnLatex is fair. During our tests, I felt that support was okay, but also far from great. The mattress is equipped with a 4.0″ support layer. This is 3.88″ thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.88″, based on all of our tests to date.

The support layer is significantly thinner than average. Moreover, the total mattress height is only 8.0”, which is significantly thinner than the average total thickness of 12.04”. When it comes to support, the total height of the mattress and the thickness of the support layer both play a critical role.

Sleeponlatex Back Sleeping
Sleeponlatex Back Sleeping

In order to create full support a mattress needs a sufficiently thick enough material layer. In my view, the SleepOnLatex mattress just isn’t thick enough.

This results in the mattress compressing more significantly upon itself, especially while lying on your side, with heavier weighted bodies, and with body types that carry more weight in the middle.

Sleeponlatex Edge Support Side Sleeping
Sleeponlatex Edge Support Side Sleeping

For sleepers 250 pounds and up I would avoid this mattress. In addition, as body weight gets above 200 pounds I start to feel more concerned about support feeling insufficient.

Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the SleepOnLatex is fair.

Product Evolution

SleepOnLatex was first launched in 2013, originally selling latex mattress toppers and pillows. In 2014, the company began to source materials directly from Sri Lanka and moved production to a factory in Chicago, Illinois.

As the company grew, so did its offerings and in 2015, the first SleepOnLatex mattress hit the market. It was originally sold as a 7.0″ or 9.0″ mattress and came in three firmness levels—soft, medium, or firm.

In 2020, the mattress made the shift to an 8.0″ mattress, and the soft mattress was discontinued.

Today, the SleepOnLatex mattress is sold from their manufacturer’s website and on Amazon.
