Best For

  • Latex foam mattress under $1,000 for a queen
  • Fast material response time and breathable sleeping surface
  • Flippable design with two firmnesses, medium and slightly feel feel

Considerations

  • Lower bounce is not great for sex performance
  • 9.0″ thick profile is likely to be too thin for heavier sleepers over 250 lbs.
  • Shorter 100-night trial period

Our Verdict

The Sleep EZ Roma is a 9″ latex foam mattress made of two layers of latex foam with a quilted cover on both sides.

This mattress is designed to be flippable, offering two different firmnesses within a single mattress. One side has a medium feel (5 out of 10) while the opposite side has a slightly firm feel (7 out of 10).

This mattress has deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. If you’re looking for more contour, but still want a generalized contour (not exacting like memory foams), the Sleep EZ Roma could be a good pick.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.49, ranking the mattress in the bottom 39% of all mattresses tested to date. While this isn’t an amazing score, considering the price and the fact it’s a latex mattress, it’s really quite a good score and an excellent value.

The Sleep EZ Roma is $859 for a queen sized mattress, which is 48% less than the average latex foam mattress. For budgets under $1,000, the Roma is the best latex mattress (latex foam or latex hybrid) that we’ve tested to date.

How is Sleep EZ Roma Different?

The Sleep EZ Roma is a 9″ latex foam mattress with an overall performance level that is slightly below the average, but also a price tag that is significantly below average—48% less than the average latex foam mattress ($1,638). For a queen mattress, this adds up to $779 in savings.

Advantages

Advantages of the Sleep EZ Roma include better cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, and faster material responsiveness. This mattress also has an exceptionally low price.

A latex foam mattress under $1,000 can be very hard to come by, especially one that uses quality materials, but the Roma really fits the bill in this instance.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has deep sinkage and low levels of bounce (26% less than average levels). The off-gassing is also considered a neutral factor since the off-gassing duration is 7 days, equal with the average.

Sleep Ez Roma Latex Relaxing
Sleep Ez Roma Latex Relaxing

Disadvantages

Edge support struggles a bit on the Roma compared to the average mattress. When seated directly at the edge, this mattress has 0.24″ deep sinkage than the average level, although lying support is still good.

The low bounce also gives the mattress a worse sex score, 7.5 where the average score is 8.3. Lastly, let’s discuss pressure relief.

This mattress is not bad, but it is thin. At 9.0″ thick, this mattress is about 3.0″ thinner than average, which in turn, can cause a lower pressure relief score. While most sleepers who weigh less than 250 lbs. probably won’t take issue, heavier weighted sleepers may not feel adequately supported by this mattress.

9.0

Cooling Test

The Sleep EZ Roma has excellent cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

78.7° F

Max. Temp.

90.7° F

Ending Temp.

81.3° F

The Roma mattress is primarily built with latex. Latex as a material type resists heat retention far better than many other types of memory and poly foam. Beyond the latex, each side of this flippable mattress has a 1.5” quilted cotton cover. The cover is quilted within a thin poly foam layer.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.7° F. This is 0.9° more than the average of 89.8° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 5.4° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.8° cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.6.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.

Sinkage Test

The Sleep EZ Roma has deep sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.34″. This is 0.17″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.17″, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Depth

2.34″

Sinkage Feel

Deep

The mattress creates a more restrained type of a body contouring hug. While there is a deep level of sinkage, the mattress doesn’t create the same type of sharp and exacting body contour that many memory and poly foams do.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Sleep Ez Roma Sinkage Test
Sleep Ez Roma Sinkage Test

The mattress is equipped with a 1.5” quilted cotton cover, which creates some immediate softness and pressure relief. However, like latex, this type of cover doesn’t create a significant hug around the body.

This is the typical and expected feel for an all latex mattress. Unlike memory foam, which creates a more dramatic body contouring hug, latex is more generalized, creating more of a circular depression around where the body lies and not dramatically contouring to your shape.

This is neither good nor bad, but it is a more specific feel. One that you’ll need to like to be comfortable on the mattress.

8.7

Motion Transfer Test

The Sleep EZ Roma has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.96 m/s². This is 8% less motion transfer than the average of 8.70 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

3.65 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-4.31 m/s²

Accel. Range

7.96 m/s²

Typically, latex mattresses struggle with motion and motion is usually higher than average for latex. However, that’s not what we measured here.

Seemingly, the quilted cover is having a major impact at keeping motion lower.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

That 1.5” quilted cover (which utilizes a layer of poly foam) is dispersing energy and keeping bounce well below average, both of which help to reduce motion transfer.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.21 seconds.

Motion drops off significantly immediately thereafter and by 0.94 seconds we return to near-zero levels of energy.

Sleep Ez Roma Latex Motion Transfer Chart

While the motion duration is a bit longer than average before it returns to near zero levels, the drop off is significant and there is no notable secondary energy spike. Overall, I’m pleased with this motion transfer dynamic and don’t expect it will be a problem for most sleepers.

10

Response Test

The Sleep EZ Roma has an extremely fast material response. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.23 seconds faster than the average of 0.43 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Fully Recovered

0.3 sec.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.68 seconds faster than the average of 0.98 seconds. At these recovery speeds, this is effectively an instant material responsiveness.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The Roma is tied for 1st as the fastest responsiveness mattress we’ve tested to date. The super fast response ensures the mattress won’t create any type of a stuck feeling and ease of movement will also be a non-issue.

Bounce Test

The Sleep EZ Roma has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 6.87″. This is 2.33″ less bounce than the average of 9.20″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

5.34″

Max. Rebound

1.53″

Total Bounce

6.87″

The soft 1.5” quilted cover seems to be absorbing a ton of energy, which is great at reducing motion transfer. However, it also means that bounce is considerably reduced as well.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Typically, all latex mattresses have more bounce. That said, the all-latex design isn’t enough to overcome the suppressive impact on bounce due to the poly foam quilted cover.

Despite the lower bounce, ease of movement is still great due to the near-instant material response of latex. However, the lower bounce does negatively impact sex performance.

8.2

Edge Support Test

The Sleep EZ Roma has good sitting edge support and good lying edge support.

Max. Sinkage

4.25″

Lying Support

Good

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.25″. This is 0.24″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.01″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Edge support while lying was equally as good. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was good in all sleeping positions. The Roma uses a simple design with two layers of latex and two quilted covers (one on each side of this flippable design).

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Notably, the mattress does not have any type of reinforced foams running along the perimeter. Perimeter support foam greatly helps to improve edge support.

While the edge support we measured and experienced is perfectly fine, it’s also clear it doesn’t rise to the excellent or outstanding level.

Nevertheless, this level of edge support performance is on par with other similarly sized and priced latex mattresses we’ve tested previously.

7.5

Sex Test

The Sleep EZ Roma has fair sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal, cooling is excellent, and both pressure relief and edge support are good. We measured 4.25” of sitting edge sinkage.

Sleep Ez Roma Latex Edge Sitting
Sleep Ez Roma Latex Edge Sitting

While edge support isn’t incredible, it should be more than sufficient for most couples to effectively utilize the edge of the mattress.

The one area where the Roma is especially weak is bounce. At 6.87” of bounce, the Roma’s bounce is well below average and well below the ideal bounce threshold of 10” that we hope to see.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%6.8Low
Edge Support20%8.4Good
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%8.0Good
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

The lower bounce makes amorous activities more strenuous and more difficult on the mattress. The Roma’s overall sex performance score is well below average. If sex performance is critical for you, it may be worth considering a different mattress.

8.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Sleep EZ Roma has a good level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body. The mattress is equipped with 4.5″ of comfort material, which is 0.3″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.2″, based on all of our tests to date.

Comfort Layer

4.5″

Support Layer

4.5″

Typically, thinner mattresses can really struggle to create sufficient pressure relief. Coming into this test I was especially worried about this being the case with the Roma.

However, I was pleasantly surprised by the level of comfort created by the mattress. In my view, the 1.5” quilted cover is really doing the heavy lifting for pressure relief.

Sleep Ez Roma Latex Back Sleeping
Sleep Ez Roma Latex Back Sleeping

The cover creates immediate softness and comfort, while the dual latex layers in the mattress create both comfort and support.

In our pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.70. This is well below the 2.0 high PSI we want to avoid. The pressure maps didn’t measure any notable pressure hot spots.

When I consider our pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be good.

8.1

Off-Gassing Test

The Sleep EZ Roma had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 7 days. This is 0.5 days longer than the average smell duration of 6.5 days.

The mattress smelled like rubber, which is what we expect from a latex mattress. While the odor is definitely strong, it isn’t annoying in the same way that a memory foam mattress can be.

How firm is Sleep EZ Roma?

The Sleep EZ Roma has a flippable design, which allows the mattress to have 2 firmnesses, one on each side.

One side has a medium feel, a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Firmness Chart 5

On the opposite side, the mattress has a slightly firm feel, a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Firmness Chart 7

Switching firmnesses on this mattress is as easy as flipping it over. We’ve tested other latex mattresses with multiple firmnesses in one mattress, but in those cases, you have to unzip the mattress cover and rearrange internal layers of the mattress (ie: Spindle, LMF Luxerion, or Sleep EZ).

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Sleep EZ Roma is good. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with a 4.5″ support layer. This is 3.4″ thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.9″, based on all of our tests to date.

For mattresses to create great support, they need to keep the spine in neutral alignment and create sufficient pressure relief. The Roma achieves both of those requirements.

Sleep Ez Roma Latex Sinkage
Sleep Ez Roma Latex Sinkage

The flippable design means you have 4.5” of comfort material and a 4.5” support layer. While the 4.5” support layer is well below what we typically see, it still performed well.

Latex as a material type is especially resilient both as a supportive layer and a comfort layer.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

While there is no question a thicker latex layer would lead to better performance, this is thick enough for sleepers up to around 200 pounds. If you’re much over 200 pounds, you should consider getting the thicker Sleep EZ Organic.

All that to say, support is still reasonably good overall, but especially so considering the price point. Lastly, the flippable firmness provides two firmnesses, medium and firm.

This is a nice option to have if you aren’t certain what firmness will work best for you. Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find support on the Sleep EZ Roma is good.

Product Evolution

Sleep EZ has been around since 1982, with the company expanding into latex mattresses in 1992. In 1998 the company expanded into the online marketplace where they were able to grow beyond the limits of sleepers only near their brick-and-mortar store.

It is a bit unclear when the Sleep EZ Roma originally launched, but customer reviews of the model date back as far as 2014, so it’s certainly been around for a long while.
