Best For
- Good edge support with only 3.5″ of sinkage when seated at the edge
- Budget mattress from Costco
- 13″ high-profile thickness
Considerations
- Below average performance in 6 out of 8 testing categories
- Disappointing level of pressure relief performance
- Disappointing foam quality
Our Verdict
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn mattress is a 13″ coil mattress, sold exclusively at Costco, that includes a quilted cover, poly foam comfort layer, and pocketed coils.
This mattress has very minimal sinkage and high levels of bounce, giving the mattress a slight contour and active feel.
The Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn comes in a single firmness, 6 out of 10 (where 10 is the most firm), giving the mattress a medium-firm feel.
In our performance tests, the Mount Auburn did not impress. Many testing categories struggled and the overall score placed this mattress in the bottom 1% of all mattresses tested to date (over 220+ mattresses included).
Despite the low cost (only $700 for a queen), I would recommend a different mattress to sleepers. The Mount Auburn struggled significantly in virtually all critical performance categories, including cooling, motion, response, pressure relief, and off-gassing. There are numerous other mattresses for around the same price that offer significantly better performance.

How is Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn Different?
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn is a 13″ coil mattress with below-average performance, but also a price that is less than the average as well. While these savings can be attractive to consumers, they do come at a cost, and sacrifices in performance are made.
Advantages
Besides the price, other advantages to Sealy include better-than-average edge support and a good sex score (thanks largely to the high level of bounce and supportive edges).
Neutral Factors
Sinkage levels are very minimal and bounce levels are high. If you like a mattress with minimal contour and an active, bouncy feel, the Posturepedic Plus could provide the feel you’re looking for.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages are numerous on this mattress as it scored below average in 6 of the 8 performance categories—cooling, motion transfer, response time, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company score.
For any mattress, this isn’t really the performance that we want to see. If you want a well-balanced mattress with solid performance, the Mount Auburn misses the mark.

Cooling Test
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn has a fair level of cooling performance. During our tests, I felt a moderate level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
78.3° F
Max Temp.
91.5° F
Ending Temp.
80.8° F
The mattress is using lower-quality foams that seem to have a negative impact on cooling. These foams just don’t breathe as well as higher-quality foams. The innerspring unit helps to bring more airflow into the mattress, but it’s not enough to overcome the cooling limitations of this mattress.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
According to Sealy, the mattress uses “SealyCool” air gel foam and “SealyCool” gel memory foam, in addition to a cooling cover.
Despite these claims, there was nothing particularly cool about this mattress. The cover did not have any type of cool-to-the-touch feel.
In addition, according to our objective testing, the foams are retaining more heat compared to the average. The Mount Auburn had a max surface level temperature of 91.5° F, which is 1.8° warmer than the average.
After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 3.2° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.5 higher than the average.
When we consider the complete picture of objective data, subjective experience, and material analysis, I’m confident, in my view, that most sleepers will find the cooling performance to be disappointing.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

Sinkage Test
The Mount Auburn mattress has a very minimal level of sinkage. In our sinkage tests, the mattress had just 1.65” of pressure point sinkage. This is 0.49” less sinkage than the average of 2.14”.
Sinkage Depth
1.65″
Sinkage Feel
Very Minimal
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

This very minimal level of sinkage creates more of a floating feel above the mattress, as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress.
The limited sinkage level, combined with comfort foams that don’t notably hug the body and innerspring unit, creates a more traditional type of a mattress feel.
If you want a mattress that hugs and contours your body Mount Auburn is not going to be a good choice.
Motion Transfer Test
The Sealy Posturepedic Mount Auburn has a high level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 12.31 m/s². This is 40% more motion transfer than the average of 8.81 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
5.50 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-6.81 m/s²
Accel. Range
12.31 m/s²
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0 to 0.15 seconds. We see a secondary spike from 0.52 to 0.68 seconds.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
And it is not until 1.20 seconds that we return to near-zero levels of energy. The minimal level of sinkage, coil unit, and relatively low-quality level of foams are all having a negative impact on motion transfer.
Neither the motion duration nor motion spikes paint a pretty picture. Overall motion transfer is high.

Response Test
The Sealy Mount Auburn has a moderate level of material response. In our mostly recovered response time test, we measured a fast material recovery of 0.4 seconds.
This is very slightly faster than the average mostly recovered time of 0.41 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.4 sec.
Complete Recovery
2.0 sec.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
While the mostly recovered time was fast, the same isn’t true for full material recovery. In our full material recovery, we measured a very slow recovery speed of 2.0 seconds, which is 1.12 seconds slower than the average full material recovery of 0.88 seconds.
While I am pleased with the mostly recovered time, the 2.0 seconds for a full material recovery is very slow. Many sleepers may find this level of responsiveness simply creates a less-than-great comfort dynamic.
If there is a silver lining, it is that the Mount Auburn has a very minimal sinkage level and doesn’t overly hug the body. For these reasons, most sleepers shouldn’t feel overly stuck in the mattress, despite the slow response time.
Bounce Test
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus has a high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 10.54”. This is 0.81” more bounce than the average of 9.73”.
Max. Depth
4.17″
Max. Rebound
6.37″
Total Bounce
10.54″
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
As expected, the mattress creates ample bounce due to the minimal sinkage created by the foams, use of poly foam instead of memory foam, and innerspring coil unit.
The Mount Auburn creates more of a classic and traditional coil feel, and big bounce comes along with that. While high bounce isn’t for everyone and it will negatively impact motion transfer, it does greatly improve sex and ease of movement.
Edge Support Test
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn has excellent edge support for both sitting and lying. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.5”. This is 0.55” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.05”.
Max Sinkage
3.50″
Lying Support
Excellent
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Even while sitting directly on the edge of the mattress it remains supportive and there was no collapse of the materials. Lying edge support is equally as good. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions, even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

According to Sealy, the mattress is equipped with the “DuraFlex Edge System”. Unfortunately, Sealy doesn’t explain what that system is exactly.
Based on my experiences with the mattress, my best guess is it simply means it contains one or more reinforced coil layers running along the perimeter of the mattress. Despite the lack of explanation from Sealy, the mattress has excellent edge support.
Sex Test
The Sealy Posturepedic Mount Auburn has good, but not amazing sex performance. On the positive side, the mattress has a very high level of bounce and excellent sex performance.
Bounce and edge support are the two most important factors, so it’s great to see these two categories do well. In addition, noise is kept to a minimum, despite the more traditional mattress design.
However, for negatives, we have a mediocre level of pressure relief and only fair cooling performance. Despite these weaknesses, overall the Mount Auburn is still a solid surface for your dance without pants.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 9.1 | Very High |
Edge Support | 20% | 9.4 | Excellent |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 6.0 | Mediocre |
Cooling | 5% | 7.0 | Fair |

Pressure Relief Test
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn has a mediocre level of pressure relief. During our tests, I experienced a moderate to significant level of pressure point buildup on my body.
Comfort Layer
4.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
Ultimately, the mattress just isn’t particularly comfortable to lie on for any extended period of time.
While the Mount Auburn does use 4.0” of comfort foam, those foams aren’t especially high quality looking and don’t feel great on the body. I can definitely feel the coils on the mattress, which is contributing to the lack of pressure relief.
This is the 3rd Sealy mattress we’ve tested from Costco. The other two, the Sealy Posturpedic Carver and Sealy Posturepedic Plus Ridgecrest II, had similar issues with pressure relief.
The basic design of these mattresses, in combination with foam layers that look and feel notably lower quality compared to many others we’ve tested, result in a pressure relief dynamic that leaves much to be desired.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Minimum | Maximum |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.25 | 0.02 | 1.49 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

---|---|---|---|
Stomach Sleepers | 0.17 | 0.02 | 1.57 |
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Sealy Mount Auburn is strong right out of the box and the odor took 28 days to fully dissipate.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period

This is significantly more off-gassing smell than the average, which is around 6 days.
Company
Sealy mattresses purchased from Costco (which as far as we can tell is the only place the Mount Auburn is sold) are serviced by Costco’s policies. Costco provides a 10 year warranty and a return / refund policy that is incredibly generous, effectively allowing you to the return the mattress at any time.

The average trial period is 166 nights and the average warranty is 14 years (excluding 25% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties).
How firm is Sealy Posturepedic Mount Auburn?
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn has a firmness of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This gives the mattress a medium-firm feel, the most popular firmness and widely accepted by a range of sleeper preferences.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Mount Auburn has a fair level of support. That said, it is far from amazing. During our tests, I felt well-supported by the mattress in all sleeping positions.
However, in my view, the mattress just isn’t comfortable. During testing, I felt moderate to significant pressure points on my body.
This pressure made it hard to stay in the same spot comfortably on the mattress, which negatively impacts the overall support experience on the mattress.
In my view, whether or not a mattress has good support comes down to whether it can keep the spine in alignment in each respective sleeping position, while also remaining comfortable.

The comfort issues compound into support issues. As a result, this is a mattress that I expect many sleepers will find unsupportive.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe |
150-250 lbs. | Maybe | No | Maybe |
250-300 lbs. | No | No | No |
Heavier-weighted bodies in particular are more likely to find the mattress creates support issues, as the same pressure relief issues that impacted my relatively lightweight body at 140 pounds will more significantly impact heavier-weighted sleepers.

The Cover
The cover of this mattress is quilted with cool-to-the-touch fibers for improved performance. It is also treated with a Surface-Guard technology designed to protect the mattress from spills, allergens, and other bacteria.

This cover has a 2.0″ foam integrated inside, which gives the mattress a decent amount of loft and yet minimal sinkage.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is a 2.0″ poly foam for the majority of the mattress, but there is also a gel foam used at the center 1/3 of the mattress.

This gel foam helps target the heaviest parts of your body to prevent spinal alignment issues and improve overall support and pressure relief.
The Support Layer
The support layer is an 8.0″ pocketed coil system, where each coil is individually encased in a thin fabric. This encasement is also perforated with small holes (as shown below) that improve airflow within the body of the mattress.

Product Evolution
The Sealy Mount Auburn was launched at Costco back in 2022. Since its initial release, there have been no major design or material changes made to this mattress.
The Mount Auburn comes as a sibling release to an existing robust Posturepedic Plus collection by Sealy.
