Best For

  • Extremely fast response time
  • Great cooling performance
  • Fantastic pressure relief and 4.0″ thick comfort layer

Considerations

  • Convoluted foam leads to higher levels of motion transfer
  • Low levels of bounce, not great for sex

Our Verdict

The Nolah Signature All Foam Hybrid mattress is a 12″ thick mattress that has an all foam design. It aims to simulate the feel of a hybrid, while utilizing 100% foam layers.

During our performance tests, this mattress had great cooling, an extremely fast response time, and improved levels of edge support over the Nolah Signature 12″ (also an all foam mattress).

Unlike traditional hybrids, this mattress has much lower levels of bounce, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but definitely something to note.

Cooling Test

The Nolah Signature All Foam mattress has excellent cooling performance. In our tests, I experienced no significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

72.7° F

Max Temp.

86.4° F

Ending Temp.

77.6° F

Despite the all foam design, the mattress uses two separate layers of convoluted foam. Convoluted foam is cut with air channels to encourage breathability and airflow, both of which improve cooling.

These convoluted foam layers most likely won’t achieve the same level of cooling performance as the Nolah Evolution 15 Hybrid would, but they aren’t far off.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

Nolah Signature All Foam after cooling test

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our heat retention tests, the mattress was able to reduce the surface level temperature by 5.2 degrees from 0 to 1 minute.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Over the 0 to 5-minute measurement period, we saw a reduction of 8.8°. Overall, I expect the cooling performance will be perfectly sufficient for most sleepers.

Sinkage Test

The Nolah Signature All Foam mattress has a deep level of sinkage. In our pressure point sinkage tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 2.36”. This is slightly deeper than the average of 2.23” (based on all of our tests to date).

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Nolah Signature All Foam sinkage test

The increased level of sinkage creates a more dramatic hug around the body. My butt and midsection sink fairly deep into the mattress. Personally, I really enjoy this feel and in my view, it is the primary reason the mattress creates such fantastic pressure relief (which we’ll discuss below).

Nolah Signature All Foam sinkage

The body contour isn’t as hard or as exacting as traditional memory foam would be, but it certainly leans more in that direction. This isn’t necessarily good or bad.

Rather, it’s just the nature of how these specific foam layers work together. For sleepers who love a little more sinkage and pronounced body contouring hug, the Nolah Signature All Foam is a great fit.

8.1

Motion Transfer Test

The Nolah Signature All Foam mattress has a high level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured 12.55 m/s² of acceleration range. This is significantly more motion than the average of 7.42 m/s² (based on all of our tests to date).

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

Honestly, I am quite surprised by the level of motion. Generally, all foam mattresses have very low motion transfer. My best guess is that the more unique material layers and material design is creating this increase in motion.

The mattress uses 2 convoluted support layers, which is beneficial for cooling. However, I suspect the air gaps it creates are allowing for increased abrupt sinkage, thereby increasing motion.

Max. Acceleration

5.74 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-6.81 m/s²

Accel. Range

12.55 m/s²

If we look at our motion transfer chart (which visualized our accelerometer data) we can see the bulk of the motion is expended by 0.21 seconds. A very slight level of motion persists until 0.56 seconds, before returning to near-zero levels.

Nolah Signature All Foam motion transfer chart
Nolah Signature All Foam motion transfer chart

While the motion peaks are definitely high, the motion duration is exceptionally low. The mattresses with the lowest motion transfer we’ve tested to date are able to disperse energy within 0.3 seconds. By 0.21 seconds the Nolah isn’t quite at zero energy, but it’s very close.

10

Response Test

The Nolah Signature All Foam mattress has an extremely fast response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.4 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.4 sec.

This is notably faster than the average for both measurement categories.

Based on all of our tests to date, we have measured an average mostly recovered response time of 0.47 seconds and an average fully recovered time of 0.90 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Oftentimes all foam mattresses, as well as mattresses with a deeper level of sinkage, tend to be a good bit slower to respond.

However, we don’t see that here. The Nolah uses poly foams that rebound back to shape nearly at the same speed as natural latex does. Overall, no complaints from my end.

Bounce Test

The Nolah Signature All Foam has a low level of bounce. In our tests, we measured 7.03” of total bounce height. This is 2.73” less bounce than the average of 9.76”.

Max. Depth

5.59″

Max. Rebound

1.44″

Total Bounce

7.03″

The combination of medium firmness, deeper sinkage, thicker foam layer, convoluted support layers, and all foam design all compound to create a lower level of bounce.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Nolah Signature All Foam bounce depth

Max Bounce Height

Nolah Signature All Foam bounce rebound

Each of these attributes contributes to keeping bounce quite restrained. Typically, I like to see 8-12” of total bounce height.

Bounce in that range is enough to help make it easier to move around on the mattress, as well as improve sex.

At 7.03” we’re a good bit below the bottom limiter on my ideal range and as a result, the lower level of bounce negatively impacts sex.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Despite this lower level of bounce, I still feel that the mattress is easy to move around on. The near-instant material response ensures sleepers don’t feel stuck, despite the deeper sinkage and low bounce.

9.5

Edge Support Test

The Nolah Signature All Foam has excellent edge support for both sitting and lying. In our sitting edge support tests, I felt well-supported even when sitting directly on the edge.

Max Sinkage

4.00″

Lying Support

Excellent

In our tests, we measured 4.0” of sitting edge sinkage. This is 0.46” less than the average of 4.46”.

Given the relative level of pressure point sinkage and body contouring, I expected sitting sinkage to be quite a bit worse.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was equally as good. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Sex Test

Our sex rating formula looks at 5 different factors weighted based on their importance.

sex percent chart

All factors are not equal in terms of significance, but each plays an important role.

Three of the most important factors are listed below with the associated testing scores:

Sex Bounce

9.3

Edge Support

9.5

Noise

10

In addition to the factors above, there are two other we consider as well, including pressure relief and cooling.

Here’s a look at the breakdown of how these 3 factors rank within the full formula:

sex formula

We use the scores from all factors, plugged into the formula above, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScore
Bounce60%9.3
Edge Support20%9.5
Noise10%10
Pressure Relief5%10
Cooling5%9.5

For the Nolah Signature All Foam Hybrid, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.5.

This score is fine, but not amazing. One of the most important factors in a mattress (when considering sex performance) is the bounce. Higher bounce equates to better sex for most people.

The Nolah Signature All Foam mattress has low levels of bounce, which just kills the score.

Edge support is good and overall the mattress is quite comfortable, but it’s hard to overcome the low bounce in this category. This is a mattress that’s going to make sex more strenuous for some.

10

Pressure Relief Test

The Nolah Signature All Foam mattress has exceptionally good pressure relief. The mattress has a medium feel, 5 out of 10 firmness.

This medium softness combined with the deeper level of sinkage creates the right recipe for amazing pressure relief (for most body types and sleepers).

Comfort Layer

4.0″

Support Layer

7.0″

While the sinkage depth is indeed deeper than the average, the response time is still fast. As a result, you have a pressure relief dynamic that defies the norms that many other mattress brands create.

Nolah Signature All Foam edge support - side sleeping
Nolah Signature All Foam edge support – side sleeping

I’m sinking deeper into a medium firmness with a higher level of contouring hug, but at the same time, I don’t feel stuck.

Because of this dynamic, there’s a faster response, and the mattress still has more than sufficient support. Overall, I’m incredibly impressed with the pressure relief dynamic created by the Nolah.

9.1

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Nolah Signature All Foam hybrid is strong and it lasts significantly longer than average.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

11 days

On average, most off-gassing is completed within 3 days. But the Nolah Signature All Foam takes 11 days, a solid week and a half to fully off-gas.

That being said, once the off-gassing is complete it’s not a factor that will continue to affect the mattress’s performance in any way.

9.5

Company

As a company, the terms and conditions of the Nolah mattresses are pretty reasonable.

Nolah offers a 120-night trial period and a lifetime warranty. Shipping is free when you order the mattress. If it doesn’t work out, you can return the mattress (within the trial period) for $99.

How firm is the Nolah Signature All Foam Hybrid?

The Nolah Signature All Foam mattress is available in a single firmness, 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale (where 10 is the most firm).

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Nolah Signature All Foam has excellent support. In our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The Nolah has a more unique material design. However, it still builds on established norms and proven materials. We have 4.0” of comfort material on top of 7.0” of support foam.

Nolah Signature All Foam squeezing top layers
Nolah Signature All Foam squeezing top layers

The middle and foundational support layers are both convoluted, which improves cooling and is most likely the reason we see deeper sinkage and a more pronounced contouring hug.

While this material design works for lighter and moderate-weight bodies, I do fear that some heavier sleepers may find the sinkage depth will simply be too deep.

As a result, heavier-weight sleepers, especially back and stomach sleepers should carefully consider whether this mattress makes sense for them. For all other types of sleepers, I’m confident that the level of support will be acceptable.

The Cover

The cover of the Nolah Signature All Foam is the same cover that is on the Nolah Signature 12″.

It is an organic cotton cover with a moisture-wicking design. The top is white and the sides are a darker textile with reinforced stitching on the sides and greater durability.

This mattress also has a non-skid bottom to prevent it from sliding around.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer includes two layers of foam, but they are two 2.0″ layers of poly foam. Each layer has slightly different properties, which enhance comfort and transition into the support foam below.

The Support Layer

The comfort layer includes 8.0″ of foam, broken up into three separate layers. From top to bottom, support layers include:

  • 3.0” support foam (convoluted)
  • 2.0” support foam
  • 3.0” support foam (convoluted)

Of those three layers, two have a convoluted design where foam is carved out in regular intervals. Convoluted foam generally has better breathability, faster response, and helps reduce the feeling of “being stuck” in a mattress.

Product Evolution

The Nolah Signature All Foam is new to the lineup as of late 2022. But it shares some similarities with the Nolah Signature, which came before it.

Notably, the Nolah Signature 12″ mattress is also all foam. So what caused the development and launch of the Nolah Signature All Foam Hybrid…which is not actually a hybrid?

Nolah Signature All Foam corner
Nolah Signature All Foam corner

The Signature All Foam 12″ is a modest step up from the Signature 12″. In the new Signature all foam hybrid, Nolah swaps traditional support foam with convoluted support foam.

The design intent being that the convoluted foam creates a feel closer to that of coils.

In my view, the convoluted foam layers definitely do help to improve cooling like a hybrid would. However, bounce and sex are all performing like an all foam mattress would.

Despite not quite living up to the hybrid name, it’s still a perfectly fine mattress.

How is the Nolah All Foam Different?

The Nolah All Foam Hybrid has many shared similarities to other mattresses in the market, but also some attributes which help it to feel and perform differently. The biggest notable difference between this mattress and its competitors is its use of convoluted support foam.

Convoluted Support

The convoluted support foam is Nolah’s design attempt at making the mattress perform as a hybrid. While the Nolah does have improved edge support, great cooling, and an extremely fast response time, that doesn’t make it a traditional hybrid, in my opinion.
