Best For

  • Fantastic pressure relief. The mattress just feels incredibly comfortable.
  • Fast response time, 0.3 seconds for both versions

Considerations

  • Edge support for both sitting & lying is good, but not great
  • High motion transfer on the medium. About double the average.

Our Verdict

The Lytton Sleep mattress is available in two firmness levels—Comfort Plush and Comfort Firm. In our performance review, we tested both firmnesses and found this mattress to be highly suitable for a wide range of sleepers.

In our performance tests, we noted that this mattress had excellent cooling, high (or very high) motion transfer, extremely fast response, moderate bounce, very good edge support, and excellent performance for sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company score.

While edge support and motion transfer leave something to be desired, the mattress scored high marks across the board in all other categories. Lytton is a solid hybrid by any definition.

Cooling Test (Plush)

Cooling performance on the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush was excellent. During our tests, I did not experience any significant level of heat retention anywhere on my body. This is an impressive feat, especially considering the soft feel.

Softer mattresses usually have deeper sinkage and a higher level of material envelopment around the body, which both have the propensity to increase heat. In my view, the Lytton does a great job at keeping sleepers cool, despite these factors.

Baseline Temp.

Max Temp.

87.9° F

Ending Temp.

82.9° F

Looking at our objective data, we recorded a max temperature of 87.9 degrees F, this is 1.7° cooler than the average max temperature (based on all of our tests to date). From minutes 0 to 1 we measured a decline from 87.9 to 84.6, a drop of 3.3°F. This decline is slightly warmer than average compared to our body of tests.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

However, it’s still good considering the max temperature was notably lower. Heat dissipation from minutes 1 to 3 continued at a steady pace over, dropping to 82.9 degrees. From minutes 3 to 5 it remained between 82.9 and 82.8 degrees F.

The Lytton Signature uses layers of quality foam on top of a high-performance coil system. The hybrid design provides excellent airflow, while the Serene memory foam breathes well in its own right.

Looking at the combination of objective data, subjective experience, and material analysis, the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush will deliver excellent cooling for most sleepers.

9.5

Cooling Test (Firm)

Cooling performance on the Lytton Signature Comfort Firm is excellent. During my tests, I felt no notable heat retention.

The mattress breathes well and doesn’t retain significant heat. In terms of design, we have layers of comfort foam on top of a coil support system. The coil system creates plenty of airflow, while the high-performance Serene foam breathes well.

Baseline Temp.

79.0° F

Max Temp.

87.5° F

Ending Temp.

80.9° F

The Lytton hit a max temp of 87.5°F, which is 2.1° cooler than the average max temp (based on all of our tests to date). Heat dissipation was equally as impressive, declining from 87.5° to 80.9° in a 5-minute period.

All factors considered, cooling performance is excellent. The mattress breathes well, releases heat promptly, doesn’t get excessively hot, and feels comfortably cool. No major complaints for cooling.

Sinkage Tests

Sinkage on the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush was moderate to deep. In our tests, we measured 2.32” of pressure point sinkage.

Lytton Signature Comfort Plush sinkage test
Lytton Signature Comfort Plush sinkage test

This is 0.1” deeper than the average sinkage of 2.22” (based on all of our tests to date). Despite the softer feel, the sinkage depth on the soft Lytton Signature was fairly restrained. The mattress creates a more dramatic contouring hug around the body.

The Lytton Signature Comfort Firm has a minimal level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured 1.90” of pressure point sinkage.

Lytton Signature Comfort Firm sinkage test
Lytton Signature Comfort Firm sinkage test

This is 0.32” less sinkage than the average of 2.22” (based on all of our tests to date). Typically, medium to medium-firm mattresses have a sinkage in the 2.0-2.3” range. As a result, Lytton is a bit less.

8.9

Motion Transfer Test (Plush)

Motion transfer on the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush was moderate. In our tests, we measured 9.37 m/s² of acceleration range.

This is 2.32 m/s² more than the average of 7.05 m/s² (based on all of our tests to date). The level of motion is more than we typically see for softer mattresses, but nothing too extreme.

The Lytton Signature Comfort Plush is soft, has a quilted cover, and thick comfort layers. These are all the elements for improved lower motion.

Max. Acceleration

5.30 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-4.07 m/s²

Accel. Range

9.37 m/s²

The tufted areas are fairly deep and may be more susceptible for changes in motion. Looking at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest motion peaks from 0.00 to 0.21.

Lytton Signature Comfort Plush motion transfer chart
Lytton Comfort Plush motion transfer chart

A moderate level of motion persists until 0.85 seconds, before returning to near-zero levels of motion. That said, the motion peaks and motion duration are less than ideal. The mattresses with the least motion transfer are able to dissipate energy within 0.3 seconds.

8.8

Motion Transfer Test (Firm)

Motion transfer on the Lytton Signature Comfort Firm is moderate. In our tests, we measured 9.81 m/s². This is 2.76 m/s² more than the average of 7.05 m/s².

The materials Lytton uses are pretty dense. As a result, you end up with a lot of pushback and bounce off the top layers. These design factors, combined with deep tufts create an environment for increased motion transfer.

Max. Acceleration

4.06 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-5.75 m/s²

Accel. Range

9.81 m/s²

The Lytton Comfort Firm has notably less motion transfer compared to the Comfort Plush version.

Looking at our motion transfer chart, we see high motion peaks until 0.21 seconds. Moderate motion continues until 0.91 seconds, before we return to near-zero levels.

Lytton Comfort Firm motion transfer chart
Lytton Comfort Firm motion transfer chart

The mattresses with the lowest motion transfer are able to dissipate all major motion by 0.3 seconds (with peaks that are significantly lower). The Lytton takes a fairly long period of time to fully disperse the motion (which is itself notably more than the average).

10

Response Test (Plush)

Response time on the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush is extremely fast (for the most part). In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.3 seconds, while a fully recovered response time took 0.8 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.8 sec.

The mostly recovered response time of 0.3 seconds is excellent. The fastest mattresses recover in 0.2 seconds, so Lytton is right there with the best of them. However, Lytton’s 0.8 seconds to fully recover is closer to average.

On average, we see mattresses mostly recovered in 0.53 seconds and fully recovered in 0.98 seconds (based on all of our tests to date). The thick comfort layer and Serene foam are reasonably fast, but not as instant as a latex or many other super responsive poly foams.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

All that said, considering the thick comfort layer and softness of the mattress these are very fast response times.

10

Response Test (Firm)

Response time on the Lytton Comfort Firm mattress is extremely fast. In our tests, we measured 0.3 seconds for the mattress to mostly recover and 0.6 seconds for a full material recovery.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.6 sec.

This is notably better than the average and the full recovery time was slightly better than the Comfort Plush firmness.

Overall, I have no major complaints when it comes to response times on either the Comfort Plush or the Comfort Firm.

Bounce Tests

There is a moderate level of bounce on the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush. In our test, we measured 8.1” of total bounce height.

Max. Depth

5.49″

Max. Rebound

2.61″

Total Bounce

8.10″

This is 1.27” less bounce than the average of 9.37” (based on all of our tests to date). Even so, it’s not an alarming level of bounce. Typically, I like to see bounce in the 8-12” range. It’s enough to see the benefits of bounce, while not being too high or too low.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

There is a moderate level of bounce height on the Lytton Signature Comfort Firm. In our tests, we measured 9.63” of bounce.

Max. Depth

This is slightly more bounce than we saw on the Comfort Plush, but still falls in the moderate range, as you can see in the video below.

9.3

Edge Support Test (Plush)

Edge support on the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush is good, but not great. In our tests, we measured 4.5” of compression when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress.

Max Sinkage

4.50″

Lying Support

Good

This is slightly better than the average of 4.61” of sitting sinkage compression. In general, I like to see 4.0” of sitting sinkage compression or less. That said, 4.5” of sitting compression for a soft mattress is still quite reasonable. While sitting edge support is mostly fine, edge support while lying leaves something to be desired.

The Leggett & Platt Quantum Edge coil unit that the foams and comfort layers sit on is exceptionally good. However, the top comfort layers are very soft and have a significant level of sinkage.

Even when on top of an excellent coil unit, this type of a comfort layer creates less than amazing lying edge support.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lytton Signature Comfort Plush edge support – with vest

When lying on my back I felt a significant level of compression at the edge and a sensation that the mattress wanted to roll me off.

When lying on the back, half of the body is further away from the edge and therefore better supported, while half is closer to the edge.

Lytton Signature Comfort Plush edge support - back sleeping

As a result, there is a greater contrast of support when lying on your back.

The level of edge support while lying on my side is documented in the images below.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

When lying on my side on the edge of the mattress I felt better support, but I wouldn’t call it excellent edge support.

All that said, edge support with a soft mattress is always a challenge. Soft materials tend to have more sinkage and more sinkage at the edge usually means worse edge support. As a result, this edge support is more of a soft mattress issue in general.

9.5

Edge Support Test (Plush)

Edge support on the Lytton Signature Comfort Firm is good, but not amazing. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured 4.00” of sitting compression.

Max Sinkage

4.00″

Lying Support

Excellent

This is better than the average sitting compression of 4.61” (based on all of our tests to date).

The design of the top cover moderately tapers downward towards the edge of the cover. This creates a slight degree of angle. As a result, the lying edge support could be better.

Some back sleepers in particular may find that slope towards the edge is enough that it doesn’t feel supportive.

Sex Test

To score sex performance we look at a number of different factors that all play a role in quality sex. Three of the most important factors include, sex bounce, edge support, and noise.

Edge Support

9.3

Noise

10

Comfort Firm Version

Sex Bounce

9.9

Edge Support

In addition to the factors above, there are a few other things to consider as well, like pressure relief and cooling.

Here’s a look at our complete sex formula:

Sex Score Formula = (Bounce * 0.6) + (Edge Support * 0.2) + (Noise * 0.1) + (Pressure Relief * 0.05) + (Cooling * 0.05)

We use the following scores, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Sex FactorFactor WeightComfort PlushComfort Firm
Bounce60%9.59.9
Edge Support20%9.39.4
Noise10%1010
Pressure Relief5%9.59.5
Cooling5%9.59.5

For the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.5 and on the Comfort Firm it was slightly better at 9.8.

The Comfort Firm has more bounce than the Comfort Plush and when it comes to sex, bounce is best. Edge support was good (and comparable) on both firmnesses, as well noise, pressure relief, and cooling.

Lytton Signature Comfort Plush

Bounce is the biggest difference between these two mattresses. If you want more action, the Comfort Firm takes the win here over the softer counterpart, the Comfort Plush.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test (Plush)

Pressure relief on the Lytton Comfort Plush is fantastic. In our tests, I felt ample pressure relief in all sleeping positions.

Comfort Layer

5.0″

Support Layer

9.0″

The Lytton has a thick 2.0” quilted cover and 3.0” of high-performance poly foam (Serene foam). 5.0” of comfort material is thicker than most mattresses we’ve tested to date.

That extra thickness, especially in a soft mattress, is important as it creates both plenty of softness and transitional pressure relieving support.

Lytton Signature Comfort Plush top players
Lytton Signature Comfort Plush top players

The Leggett & Platt Quantum Edge coil system is also one of the best support systems I’ve tested to date. I see this coil unit used by numerous brands and it’s easy to see why.

It just works fantastically well to support sleepers without creating pressure relief problems. Given the material design, layer thicknesses, and coil unit, I have zero complaints with respect to pressure relief.

9.5

Pressure Relief Test (Firm)

Pressure relief on the Lytton Signature Comfort Firm is excellent as well. During our tests, I felt ample pressure relief in all sleeping positions. It uses a 5.0” comfort layer that is sufficiently thick enough for light, moderate, and heavyweight bodies.

Comfort Layer

5.0″

Support Layer

9.0″

While the 3.0” of Serene poly foam creates more pushback, the 2.0” quilted cover has less dense foam that creates more immediate softness.

Lytton Signature Comfort Firm edge support - sitting
Lytton Signature Comfort Firm edge support – sitting

As a result, the euro-style cover creates much of the pressure-relieving dynamic, especially for light and moderate-weight sleepers. Overall, I’m pleased with the design and material layer choices. The Lytton Comfort Firm does a great job at creating plenty of pressure relief.

9.6

Off-Gassing Test

Both the Comfort Plush and Comfort Firm versions of the Lytton Sleep Signature mattress had good off-gassing. The smell out of the box was strong and took 5 full days to off-gas.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

5 days

The average is closer to 3 days, but 5 days isn’t that far off. And remember, once a mattress has fully off-gasses, it’s a one-and-done process.

Off-gassing is not something that will affect the mattress beyond the first few days you have it. To speed up off-gassing, place the mattress in a well-ventilated room and without any bedding on it.

9.8

Company

Let’s talk about Lytton Sleep as a company. Overall, they have a great company score. Lytton offers a 100-night trial period and a 20-year warranty.

This trial is a little shorter than some others, but the warranty is a longer than average, so I would say that overall the two points balance each other out.

How firm is the Lytton Signature?

The Lytton comes in two firmness levels—Comfort Plush and Comfort Firm.

Lytton Comfort Plush Firmness

The Comfort Plush is a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is a bit softer than a medium and has a luxury plush feel to it. There is more sinkage and a deeper level of hug and contour compared to the Comfort Firm.

firmness - 4 out of 10 - soft

Lytton Comfort Firm Firmness

The Comfort Firm is a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is a medium firm and has less sinkage than the Comfort Plush.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Overall support on the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush mattress was excellent. Soft mattresses often struggle to find the right balance between softness and support.

However, I was pleased with the support dynamic from Lytton. There is ample softness and plenty of support.

Lytton Signature Comfort Plush side sleeping
Lytton Signature Comfort Plush side sleeping

With respect to support, my only major concern is for the body types and sleeping positions that aren’t a good fit for a soft mattress. This isn’t a problem with Lytton’s soft mattress specifically, but rather a challenge for all soft mattresses.

If you are sleeping on your back or stomach a soft mattress very likely will not provide adequate support for you. Likewise, heavier-weight sleepers are also less likely to feel well supported by a soft mattress.

That said, if you sleep on your side and/or you’re a lightweight body type, then the soft mattress is more likely to be a better fit for your specific needs.

Support on the Lytton Signature Comfort Firm is excellent. Notably, the mattress does have a slightly firm feel (7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm).

This firmness is better suited for heavier-weight sleepers of all sleeping positions, as well as back and stomach sleepers of all weights. Lightweight side sleepers in particular may find that it creates a little too much pushback.

Lytton Signature Comfort Firm
Lytton Signature Comfort Firm

This is the only group of sleepers that I am notably concerned about. For all other body types, the combination of sinkage, firmness, and pressure relief creates appropriate support.

Do bear in mind, the Lytton Comfort Firm is going to be slightly firmer than many other medium-firm mattresses on the market. Most mattresses marketed as a medium, medium firm, and luxury firm are a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

The Lytton Sleep Signature hybrid is a high-profile mattress that comes in two different firmnesses to meet the needs of a wider group of sleepers.

Materials

The materials vary slightly depending on which firmness you select, but here is the rundown. From top to bottom, there are four main layers in both of these mattresses.

  • 2.0″ quilted cover
  • 3.0″ poly foam (exact density varies by firmness)
  • 8.0″ pocketed coils
  • 1.0″ support foam

The Cover

The quilted cover on both of these mattress is identical. It has a tufted, Euro-style cover with a gel-infused foam on the inside.

This cover uses 2.0″ of CertiPUR foam with a fabric cover made of 81% organic fabric and a 19% polyester base.

Lytton Signature Comfort Plush

The sides of the mattress use a thicker fabric with reinforced stitching for durability. There are also two handles on each side of the mattress to make it easier to maneuver, as needed.

The Comfort Layer

On either of these mattresses, the comfort layer is still a 3.0″ slab of poly foam—the main difference here is the varying firmness on each foam.

This foam sits directly below the 2.0″ quilted cover and is designed to provide hug, contour, and pressure relief.

This poly foam is a foam called “Serene Foam”, which includes microscopic air capsules, improving cooling and pressure relief.

The Support Layer

The support layer is made up of the 8.0″ pocketed coils and a 1.0″ support foam base. The coils are individually encased in fabric which helps to limit noise, reduce motion transfer, and improve pressure relief.

The 1.0″ foam beneath the coils is 1.8 density with a 36 ILD. It is intended to support the layers above and help the mattress retain its shape.

Product Evolution

Lytton Sleep launched in 2019 with the Lytton Comfort Plush and Lytton Plus Comfort Firm. These mattresses were both hybrids and had a similar design to the revamped 2022 Lytton mattresses.

In 2022 Lytton renamed and relaunched both mattresses as the Lytton Signature Comfort Plush and Lytton Signature Comfort Firm.

Here are the biggest differences from the 2019 vs. 2022 version:

  • 2022 version upgraded from a generic 3.0″ poly foam in the core to 3.0″ of Serene foam
  • 2022 version dropped memory foam in the quilted cover and replaced with a gel poly foam
  • Both 2019 and 2022 version use a Leggett & Platt Quantum Edge coil unit
  • 2022 version added a 1.0″ layer of support foam on the base

How is Lytton Sleep Different?

Wondering how the Lytton Signature Hybrid is different from the rest? Here are a few quick points.

#1. Varying Firmnesses

While it’s not hugely unique, it’s still worth pointing out that the Lytton Signature comes in two different firmnesses.

Lytton Signature Comfort Firm stomach sleeping
Lytton Signature Comfort Firm stomach sleeping

If you like the look or feel of the Lytton Signature, but want a mattress that is slightly softer or slightly firmer than a medium, this could be a good option for you.

#2. Serene Foam

Serene Foam is a foam with microscopic air capsules which is designed to enhance performance as well as limit heat retention. If you’re looking for improved cooling (especially in a soft mattress), this is a good way to get it.
