Our Verdict

The Latex For Less is an 8.00″ latex foam mattress made of two layers of latex foam, one acting as a comfort layer and the second acting as the support layer.

The Latex For Less is a flippable mattress with a Medium side and a Firm side. In our tests, I found the Medium side to have a slightly firm feel (7 out of 10 firmness) and the Firm side to be extra firm (9 out of 10).

The Medium side of this mattress has minimal sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. As a latex mattress, the Latex for Less has only a slight body contour and a more generalized hug. Some people love the more restrained hugging feel latex, and others hate it; it’s a very specific feel.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 7.61, ranking the mattress in the bottom 10% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking exclusively at latex foam mattresses, this mattress is one of the worst performers I’ve tested to date and scores in the bottom 1%. The average latex mattress has an overall score of 8.62, and the Latex for Less is 1.01 points lower than average.

Of course, for some, the lower price will outweigh the performance disadvantages. The Latex For Less is $1,109 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 28% less expensive than average latex foam mattress we’ve tested.

How is Latex For Less Different?

The Latex For Less is an 8.00″ latex foam mattress (should be 9.00″ thick, according to the manufacturer, but the mattress we tested was only 8.00″) with an overall performance level significantly below average and a price below average.

For sleepers who want latex and don’t necessarily need the best performance, this could be an attractive balance, but there are certainly some disadvantages to consider.

Advantages

In addition to the low price, other advantages of the Latex for Less include a faster material response time, above-average sex performance, and a higher company score.

The mattress is backed by a 20-year warranty, which is longer than the average warranty length of only 13 years.

Lastly, the flippable design of this mattress could be advantageous for sleepers who aren’t sure what feel they need, but the number of sleepers who will find the Firm side (which we found has an extra firm feel) comfortable is likely to be a pretty narrow window.

Neutral Factors

The Latex for Less mattress has minimal sinkage and moderate bounce. Both of these factors are considered neutral, as different sleepers will have different preferences.

Latex For Less Relaxing
Latex For Less Relaxing

The most important thing to consider here is the generalized contour of this mattress. If you want a mattress that hugs you or allows you to sleep “in the mattress”, this will not be the right choice for you.

Disadvantages

Performance disadvantages of the Latex for Less include below-average cooling performance, higher levels of motion transfer, worse edge support, and a disappointing pressure relief score.

The Latex for Less has only a 2.5″ comfort layer, which is quite a bit thinner than the average comfort layer of 4.32″. While thickness isn’t everything, it certainly contributes to the lower pressure relief on this mattress.

Smell is also surprisingly strong, and the mattress took 30 days to fully stop smelling. While it does have more of a rubber smell than a chemical smell, it’s still a notable consideration for sleepers who are sensitive to strong odors.

8.0

Cooling Test

The Latex For Less has good cooling. During our tests, I felt a slight level of heat retention around my body, but it was nothing extreme.

Baseline Temp.

77.2° F

Max. Temp.

92.4° F

Ending Temp.

81.7° F

Overall, cooling is fine, but it’s also clear it doesn’t rise to the excellent or outstanding level. This mattress uses a simple all-foam design. We have 2” of latex foam sitting atop another foam layer.

Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

Latex For Less After Cooling Test

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The all-foam design simply doesn’t create ideal airflow or breathability. While the latex naturally resists heat retention, the more limited airflow means that the cooling experience was less-than-ideal.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 92.4° F. This is 2.2° warmer than the average of 90.2° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 6.1 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.3 degrees cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Latex For Less Heat Dissipation Chart

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is good.

Sinkage Test

The Latex For Less has minimal sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.89″. This is 0.37″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.26″, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Feel

Body Contour

Slight

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Latex For Less Sinkage Test
Latex For Less Sinkage Test

The mattress creates only a slight level of body hug. Instead, the more limited sinkage creates a floating feel where the body lies more “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress.

This more buoyant feel also means that the mattress just doesn’t create any notable body contouring hug.

Latex For Less Sinkage
Latex For Less Sinkage

Mind you, our primary tests are based on the medium side of this flippable mattress. When we tested sinkage on the firm side, it was even more extreme. The firm side has extremely minimal sinkage, a dramatic floating feel, virtually zero body contouring hug, and an extra firm feel.

While there are certainly some sleepers who will enjoy this type of a feel, in my view, it is a relatively small percentage of the total population. This type of sinkage dynamic is simply one that is far more polarizing. Yes, some sleepers will enjoy it, but it’s certainly not for everyone.

7.9

Motion Transfer Test

The Latex For Less has a moderate level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 9.66 m/s².

Accel. Range

9.66 m/s²

Motion Duration

1.17 seconds

This is 10% more motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s². The higher motion is the result of the latex.

Latex as a material is highly resilient, bouncy, and responsive. These attributes, in addition to the slightly firm feel and minimal sinkage on the medium side, create the right conditions to deliver higher motion transfer than average.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.2 seconds.

Motion drops off thereafter, but we did still record a notable secondary energy spike from 0.5 to 0.6 seconds. By 1.17 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.27 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.90 seconds.

Both motion duration and motion intensity are slightly worse than average.

Motion Transfer Over Time

Latex For Less Motion Transfer Chart

While we’d certainly love to see a motion transfer lower than this, it’s not tremendously high, especially when you consider the latex design. Latex mattresses naturally create more motion due to latex.

So this is less of an issue specific to Latex for Less and more of an issue with latex more broadly speaking. If you want latex, you should plan for higher motion transfer.

10

Response Test

The Latex For Less has an extremely fast material response.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Fully Recovered

0.3 sec.

In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.22 seconds faster than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.73 seconds faster than the average of 1.03 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

These material recovery speeds are effectively instant. In addition, they are as fast as it gets. Latex for Less is tied for 1st with a number of other highly responsive mattresses we’ve previously tested.

The rapid material recovery speed means this mattress is incredibly easy to move around and will never leave you feeling stuck or with any difficulty in changing positions or getting in / out of bed.

Bounce Test

The Latex For Less has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 9.66″.

Max. Depth

4.91″

Max. Rebound

4.75″

Total Bounce

9.66″

This is 0.97″ more bounce than the average of 8.69″, based on all of our tests to date. Latex mattresses typically have more bounce than average, and that’s exactly what we measured here.

Latex, as a material type, is highly resilient, springy, and responsive. Those attributes are all contributing to the higher level of bounce. The increased level of bounce makes this mattress easy to move around on and also improves the sex performance.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Latex For Less Bounce Depth
Latex For Less Bounce Depth

Max. Bounce Height

Latex For Less Bounce Rebound

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

That said, the higher bounce is also contributing to the higher level of motion transfer. As such, you should consider which performance factors are more important to you: motion transfer or sex and ease of movement?

7.9

Edge Support Test

The Latex For Less has good sitting edge support and fair lying edge support.

Max. Sinkage

4.00″

Lying Support

Fair

Reinforced Edge

No

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.00″. This is 0.16″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 3.84″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was fair in all sleeping positions. When lying near the edge, I feel a notable weakening of support at the absolute edge.

My back and body feel that they are lying slightly deeper in the mattress than the part of my body towards the middle of the mattress.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Notably, this mattress does not utilize any type of reinforced edge support (which is typical for an all-foam latex mattress). When we consider that design choice alongside the considerably thinner-than-average 8” total mattress height, it’s easier to understand why the edge support leaves something to be desired.

In my view, this mattress simply does not have a material design capable of delivering ideal edge support.

8.5

Sex Test

The Latex For Less has good sex performance.

On the positive side, the mattress creates minimal noise and has good cooling. Edge support is also good enough, though it clearly doesn’t rise to the excellent or outstanding level.

Latex For Less Edge Sitting
Latex For Less Edge Sitting

In our edge tests, we measured 4.00” of sitting edge sinkage, which is slightly worse than average. Absolutely, it could be better, but it’s also good enough to be fine for amorous activities for most.

Moving on, we have bounce, which was also good, but not amazing. We measured 9.66” of total bounce height, which is more than average.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%8.5High
Edge Support20%8.8Good
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%6.0Mediocre
Cooling5%8.0Good

In terms of sex, we want as much bounce as possible. While we have enough to facilitate reasonably good performance, there is also plenty of room for more bounce and thus, a higher overall sex score.

Last but not least, we have pressure relief, which was only a fair performance. All factors considered, the Latex for Less earns a better-than-average sex score.

6.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Latex For Less has a mediocre level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of pressure points on my body.

Comfort Layer

2.50″

Support Layer

5.50″

In general, I found the comfort experience on the mattress just wasn’t great. The mattress is equipped with 2.5″ of comfort material (and 0.125″ of that is quilted cover material on the bottom side of the mattress), which is 1.82″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.32″, based on all of our tests to date.

The quality of the comfort materials, including the 2.25” latex layer, seems fine. However, the quality of the foam support layer is far from great.

The combination of a considerably thinner-than-average comfort layer, floating feel, minimal sinkage, and disappointing support layer creates the conditions for disappointing pressure relief.

Latex For Less Back Sleeping
Latex For Less Back Sleeping

This mattress has the classic latex feel, which includes a more restrained body contouring, a more relaxed hug, and more of a floating and buoyant feel.

These attributes are even more extreme on the firm side, which has an extra firm feel, virtually zero hug, and an extreme floating sensation.

In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.58. This is well within the 1.0 PSI threshold that I ideally want all mattresses to be within.

When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be mediocre.

How firm is Latex For Less?

The Latex For Less Mattress has a flippable design that provides a separate firmness option on either side of the mattress—what they call Medium and Firm.

The Medium side has a 7 out of 10 rating, which gives it a slightly firm feel, and the Firm side has a 9 out of 10 rating with an extra firm feel.

Medium Side

Firmness Chart 7

Firm Side

These firmnesses are a bit firmer than I expected them to be, based solely on the firmness names provided by the manufacturer.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Latex For Less is mediocre. During our tests, I felt that support just wasn’t great in all sleeping positions, but especially as a side sleeper. The mattress is equipped with a 5.5″ support layer.

This is 2.48″ thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.98″, based on all of our tests to date.

Support FactorData
Comfort Layer 2.50″
Support Layer 5.50″
Firmness Slightly Firm and Extra Firm
Body Contour Slight
Zoned Support No
Reinforced Edge No

For a mattress to create ideal support, it needs to keep the spine in a neutral alignment, while also creating ample comfort and pressure relief. In my view, this is where the problems begin.

The Latex for Less pressure relief simply isn’t great. As such, I found it more difficult to lie comfortably in the same position for any extended period of time. The limited pressure relief is in part due to the thinner-than-average comfort layer.

Latex For Less Pressing Materials
Latex For Less Pressing Materials

Beyond the issues with pressure relief, the support foam on the base is also not great and doesn’t feel like a quality foam.

According to the LatexForLess.com product page, this mattress uses a 3.0” medium latex layer sitting atop a 6.0” firm latex layer. That said, neither foam layer was as tall as the product page indicates.

Our top latex layer is 2.25″ (supposed to be 3.0″) and the base layer is 5.50″ (supposed to be 6.0″).

Having less foam is certainly a big reason why support and comfort struggled. Additionally, the bottom 5.50” foam layer is supposed to be a latex layer, and yet, this is not like any type of latex I have ever seen, tested, or heard of. The base foam feels like a polyurethane support foam, in my view.

We ran this layer through our densimeter and our results came back with a PCF of 1.82 (a typical support poly foam density). According to the LatexForLess.com website, that bottom foam layer is supposed to have a 55 density (kg / m^3), which translates into a 3.43 PCF.

Latex For Less Materials
Latex For Less Materials

Even the top latex layer, which has an advertised density of 75 kg / m^3, came back as a 4.24 PCF in our densimeter (it should have been a 4.68 PCF).

All this to say, I don’t know exactly what’s going on with the materials in this mattress. They are notably below advertised thicknesses, notably below advertised densities, and the base foam layer looks and feels nothing like any latex layer I’ve ever tested. The base foam layer looks, feels, and sounds like a support poly foam and has a density level that is exactly what we expect from a support poly foam.

Moving on from materials, let’s talk about firmness. This mattress is flippable with medium on one side and firm on the other side. The medium side has a slightly firm feel, 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale. The firm side has an extra firm feel, 9 out of 10. The vast majority of sleepers will end up choosing the medium (aka slightly firm) side.

Latex For Less Stomach Sleeping
Latex For Less Stomach Sleeping

The feel is more buoyant, creating a floating sensation where sleepers lie “on” the mattress rather than “in”. In addition, we have a more restrained and relaxed body contouring hug, in part due to latex and in part due to the floating feel.

This feel isn’t good or bad, but it is a specific feel. In my view, this feel is better suited to the needs of stomach and back sleepers and not especially well suited to side sleepers. Given the limited pressure relief, it’s all the more reason I think side sleepers should choose something else.

All things considered, I’m really disappointed in the total support experience on this mattress. Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find support on the Latex For Less to be mediocre.

Design

The Latex For Less is an 8.00″ latex foam mattress with a flippable design and two firmness levels—Medium and Firm.

It has a thinner profile, only 8.00″ thick, and a simple quilted cover. According to the Latex for Less website, the mattress should be 9.00″ thick, but in our tests, it measured a full inch less than expected. The mattress also comes in a 7.00″ version.

Design FactorData
Type Latex Foam
Thickness 8.00″

Weight 130 lbs.

In our tests, we found the firmness to be firmer than expected—a slightly firm feel for the Medium side (7 out of 10) and an extra firm feel (9 out of 10) for the Firm side.

Since the mattress is flippable, both layers are technically “comfort layers”, but depending on what firmness you’re looking for, one will likely be more desirable than the opposite side.

One note: Latex for Less says on the law tag that the second layer of foam is 100% latex, but it felt / sounded / looked / tested like support poly foam in our tests. If you’re looking for an ultra-firm feel, this may be just fine, but it’s worth noting, as it won’t be desirable for the broader range of sleepers.

The Law Tag outlines the full breakdown of materials included in this mattress.
