Considerations

  • Terrible support with an extremely thin overall profile
  • Low-quality materials
  • Returns are issued as store credit onto an IKEA card

Our Verdict

The IKEA mattress is a 6.25″ foam mattress with an extremely basic design of poly foam and support foam. The layers are thin and the mattress as a whole feels very cheap.

This mattress has an extremely minimal level of sinkage and moderate levels of bounce.

It is available in two firmness levels—medium-firm and firm (according to IKEA), but I found the mattress to have a much firmer feel. In our tests, the “medium-firm” felt more like a firm (8 out of 10).

In our performance tests, the IKEA Morgedal scored at or below average in 5 out of 8 testing categories we scored for. The overall score of 7.28 puts the Morgedal in the bottom 5% of all mattresses tested to date and nearly the worst foam mattress we’ve ever tested. (The only foam mattress that scored lower is actually a couch—the Polycouch.)

The price point of the IKEA Morgedal is potentially the only saving grace of this mattress, priced at only $269 for a queen mattress. But that being said, most sleepers will be better off with a higher-quality mattress over this option.

How is the IKEA Morgedal Different?

The IKEA Morgedal is a 6.25″ foam mattress with below-average performance and a below-average price. While this can mean big savings compared to the average foam mattress (nearly 80% less than the average foam mattress), it also means you’re giving up higher-quality materials and a thicker design.

Advantages

The advantages of the IKEA Morgedal mattress include lower levels of motion transfer and a faster material response time.

Neutral Factors

Sinkage is minimal on this mattress and bounce levels are moderate. Both sinkage and bounce are considered to be neutral factors since each sleeper will have different preferences.

Disadvantages

The disadvantages of this cost-saving mattress are numerous. While you will save some cash, you would also need to be okay with weak cooling performance, weak edge support, terrible pressure relief, worse off-gassing, and a return policy that leaves much to be desired (returns only for store credit). Overall, this is a mattress I would have a hard time ever recommending.

Cooling Test

The IKEA Morgedal has a fair level of cooling performance. During our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of heat retention around my body. On the positive side, the mattress uses a thin cover and has more of a floating feel.

Baseline Temp.

75.2° F

Max Temp.

90.8° F

Ending Temp.

81.0° F

The thin cover creates better airflow, while the floating feel avoids wrapping too much foam and other comfort material around the body. That said, this is still an all foam mattress and the foams are extremely basic. Both of these factors inhibit cooling performance.

Max Temp.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our objective temperature testing, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.8° F, which is 1.2° warmer than the average of 89.6°.

Based on the objective data and my subjective experience, it’s clear that the mattress is retaining more heat and creating a warmer sleeping environment.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Given the price point, that performance level is exactly what I expect. That said, most sleepers are likely to find the mattress isn’t particularly cool. If you describe yourself as a “hot” or “warm” sleeper I would advise choosing a different model.

Sinkage Test

The IKEA Morgedal has an extremely minimal level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured just 1.33” of pressure point sinkage. This is 0.79” less sinkage than the average of 2.12”, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Feel

Extremely Minimal

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Ikea Morgedal Sinkage Test
Ikea Morgedal Sinkage Test

The mattress creates an extreme floating on “top” of the mattress feel, as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress. There is virtually zero body contouring hug.

During our tests, I was thoroughly unimpressed by the comfort dynamic. In my view, the mattress is simply incredibly uncomfortable and much of that can be attributed to the sinkage level and lack of body contouring.

9.4

Motion Transfer Test

The IKEA Morgedal has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured 6.41 m/s² of acceleration range. This is 27% less motion than the average of 8.73 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

2.99 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-3.42 m/s²

Accel. Range

6.41 m/s²

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

The all-foam design and composition of the mattress cover are both having a significant positive impact on motion transfer.

Mattresses with coils typically create more motion, so having a mattress that is all foam helps to greatly resist and reduce motion.

In addition, the relative looseness of the cover helps to prevent a motion-generating event.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0 to 0.15 seconds.

There is a secondary spike from 0.45 to 0.60 seconds and it’s not until 1.20 seconds that we return to near-zero levels of energy.

Ikea Morgedal Motion Transfer Chart

While the motion peaks and valleys are kept in check, the motion duration is notably worse than average. Even so, I am pleased with the level of total motion and I expect motion transfer will be a non-issue for most sleepers.

10

Response Test

The IKEA Morgedal has an extremely fast material response time. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds. This is 0.21 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

In our fully recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.59 seconds faster than the average of 0.89 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

At these speeds, the Morgedal is tied with the fastest mattresses we’ve tested to date for responsiveness.

The poly foam layers rebound back to shape effectively instantly. The fast responsiveness ensures you’ll never feel stuck on the mattress and the mattress is easy to move around on.

Bounce Test

The IKEA Morgedal has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 9.41”. This is 0.26” less bounce than the average of 9.67”, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Ideally, I like to see bounce in the 8-12” range. Within this range, you’ll experience the benefits of bounce, namely ease of movement and sex performance, while keeping motion transfer held to a reasonable level.

At 9.41” the IKEA mattress is well within the bounce sweet spot. I expect most sleepers will find the bounce to be perfectly satisfactory.

7.5

Edge Support Test

The IKEA Morgedal has a fair level of edge support. During our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.5”. This is 1.52” less sitting sinkage better than the average sitting sinkage compression of 4.02”.

Max Sinkage

2.50″

Lying Support

Poor

Given the simple design and limited 6.25” total mattress profile, there is only so far the mattress can easily compress.

Despite the lack of objective sinkage, I don’t feel well supported at the edge. This is simply due to just how incredibly thin the mattress is.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Lying edge support was poor. During our tests, I did not feel well supported while lying on the edge in any sleeping position.

The poor performance is due to the ultra-thin 6.25” profile. There just isn’t enough material to sufficiently support the weight of adult sleepers.

8.5

Sex Test

The IKEA Morgedal has a good level of sex performance. We’ll start with the positives, which include perfect scores for edge support and noise.

With a middling score of 8 out of 10, the 9.41” of bounce is good, but also far from perfect for amorous activity.

Pressure Relief5%4.0Terrible

Lastly, pressure relief and cooling both leave much to be desired. The combination of these weighted factors resulted in a good score, but also one that is about average.

4.0

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief on the IKEA Morgedal is terrible. During our tests, I felt significant pressure points on my shoulders, back, head, and hips. The mattress is 6.25” thick (according to IKEA, it’s designed to be 7.125” thick, but ours was well short of that height).

Comfort Layer

3.25″

Support Layer

3.0″

Thinner mattresses struggle more to create adequate pressure relief, as sleeper bodies just don’t have enough foam to appropriately support the weight of an adult.

The Morgedal uses 3.25” of poly foam for comfort material, which is notably less than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.1”, based on all of our tests to date. On some mattresses, 3.25” of comfort material can be sufficient. However, the foam quality used here is incredibly disappointing.

The foam feels far more like a typical support foam that you’d place on the bottom of the mattress. It feels nothing like a high-performance comfort foam that I’ve tested on other mattresses.

All things considered, pressure relief performance is incredibly disappointing. During my testing, I found the mattress to be entirely uncomfortable.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the IKEA Morgedal mattress is strong right out of the box. The smell lasted for 8 days before dissipating.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

8 days

This is longer than the average off-gassing period, which is about 6 days. The Morgedal has an unusual smell. It doesn’t smell like other poly foams we’ve tested, but instead smelled a bit like cigarettes. It’s unclear to me why it would smell this way.

In any case, this smell duration and smell strength is far from ideal.

Company

IKEA mattresses have a 180-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping costs $19 for this mattress and returns are free.

But, bear in mind, returns are issued as a store credit and not an actual refund back in your bank account.

In my view, this is a terrible refund policy. If I make a purchase I’m unhappy with I should be able to return the mattress for a full cash refund. A large percentage of mattress brands allow you to do exactly that with a much smaller percentage charging fees, only allowing store credit returns, or not allowing returns at all.

Being stuck with store credit just doesn’t feel great, especially on a product that is hundreds of dollars.

IKEA mattresses, in general, have a reputation of being extremely budget-friendly, but also taking shortcuts that impact material quality or overall performance, in the interest of keeping the cost down.

How firm is the IKEA Morgedal?

The IKEA Morgedal comes in two firmness levels, both of which are quite firm. According to IKEA, the two firmness options are “medium-firm” and “firm”.

Firmness 8@4x

We tested to medium-firm version to be at an 8 out of 10, and delivered a standard firm feel.

Based on mattress quality and materials, I would expect the “firm” version would have an extra firm feel—9 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Firmness 9

While a firm mattress isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it is a little disheartening when a manufacturer’s assessment of firmness doesn’t line up with the actual firmness when the mattress arrives.

This firm of a mattress would likely be unsuitable for many sleepers, especially lighter-weighted sleepers or those who sleep on their side.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The IKEA Morgedal has a terrible level of support. During our tests, I did not feel well supported in any sleeping position. The Morgedal is just 6.25” thick.

According to IKEA, it is designed to be 7.125” thick, but the model we received was well short of that. At 6.25” thick it includes a 3.0” support layer. Both the total mattress thickness and support layer are well short of the height they are supposed to be.

Ikea Morgedal Foot
Ikea Morgedal Foot

Based on all of our tests to date, the average mattress is 12.0” thick and the average support layer is 7.9” thick. The incredibly thin profile of the Morgegal simply means there is less material capable of supporting sleeper bodies.

This design choice, in combination with the severe lack of pressure relief, creates significant support issues.

During our tests, I felt unsupported, uncomfortable, and had significant pressure points on my body. The mattress did not allow me to achieve a neutral spinal alignment, which further exacerbated pressure relief and support problems.

Overall, I am extremely disappointed with the level of support.

Based on this level of support, these are the sleepers I would recommend for each mattress firmness available.

Design

The IKEA Morgedal is an extremely thin (6.25″) foam mattress with a firm feel. It is designed to hit an extremely low price point, but really sacrifices material thickness and quality in order to get there.

The Cover

The cover the IKEA Morgedal is thin and has a cheap feel to it. It lacks any type of tufting.

One advantage is that the IKEA cover is removable in two parts for easier maintenance. The top part of the cover is machine-washable.

Ikea Morgedal Mattress Cover

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer of the IKEA Morgedal is a 3.25″ poly foam with a channel-cut grid that encourages airflow and is designed to improve pressure relief (which still struggles, as we saw in the tests above).

Ikea Morgedal Open Cover

The Support Layer

The support layer of the IKEA Morgedal is a 3.0″ convoluted support foam. as mentioned above, this is significantly thinner than the average support layer we see on other mattresses.

A thin support layer can cause support issues for heavier sleepers, pressure relief issues, and a host of other problems with long-term use.

Product Evolution

IKEA has been selling mattresses in the US for nearly two decades. Originally, they offered a single model, but have expanded their mattress designs considerably over the years.

The IKEA Morgedal has been available since at 2014. The design in 2014 is substantially the same as the design in 2024. In 2014 the mattress was the same height and used seemingly the same basic materials and design.
