Best For

  • Organic, non-toxic materials
  • High levels of bounce
  • Excellent edge support
  • No glues, additives, or chemical flame retardants

Considerations

  • Only 2″ of comfort material, may not be ideal for pressure relief
  • Motion transfer was higher than I’d like to see

Our Verdict

The Happsy mattress is an organic latex hybrid with a 10″ profile. It has a 2″ comfort layer and an 8″ support layer. There is an an optional topper you can add for improved pressure relief.

During our performance tests, this mattress had good scores across the board—great edge support, high bounce, and extremely fast response time. The one area it really struggled with is motion transfer, transferring twice the amount of motion compared to the average.

Performance Tests

At NapLab, we put each mattress to the test.

We test 10 different factors that impact the performance, comfort, and value of the mattress. Testing categories include:

Cooling Test

The cooling performance on the Happsy mattress is excellent. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

82.5° F

Max Temp.

89.0° F

Ending Temp.

84.1° F

This is pretty typical performance for a latex hybrid mattress. Latex doesn’t retain heat and also breathes well. Meanwhile, the pocketed coil layer creates ample air flow for the mattress as a well.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

Happsy after cooling test
Happsy after cooling test
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In terms of material choices and mattress design, the Happsy mattress checks the boxes I look for.

Looking at our objective data we see good, but not amazing performance. In our tests, we recorded a max temp of 89.0°. This is 0.5°F cooler than the average max temp (based on all of our tests to date).

Heat dissipation was about the same, good, but far from great. From minutes 0 to 1 we recorded a decline of 2.5°, which is notably worse than average. The decline from minutes 0 to 5 was also below average.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Happsy heat dissipation chart

It’s unclear to me why the objective data is so lackluster compared to our subjective experience. It’s possible that the materials within the quilted cover are retaining heat more aggressively, compared to the core and support layers of the mattress, which create a more cool experience.

In any case, while I am not thrilled with the objective data we recorded, I am inclined to believe what my body and the material design tell me; which is, this is an acceptably cool mattress.

There is nothing within the Happsy mattress that would lead to poor cooling performance.

Sinkage Test

The Happsy mattress has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.20”.

This is nearly the same as the average sinkage depth (based on all of our tests to date), which is 2.25”.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Happsy sinkage test
Happsy sinkage test

The mattress has a very restrained and generalized contour around the body.

This is in contrast to memory foam and many poly foam mattresses, which create a more dramatic and exacting hug around the body.

While the midsection and butt sink deeper into the mattress, other lighter parts of the body (especially arms and legs) are floating more on top of the mattress.

Given the latex hybrid design, this is basically what I expect as far as the feel goes.

7.3

Motion Transfer Test

The Happsy mattress has an extremely high level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 15.91 m/s².

This is significantly higher motion than we see on average. Based on all of our tests to date, we have measured an average motion transfer rate of 6.90 m/s².

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

At an acceleration range of 15.91 m/s² the Happsy mattress has the 5th highest motion transfer of any mattress we’ve tested to date.

When we consider the design of the mattress, it makes sense. Both latex and coils individually will create a higher level of motion transfer.

A thicker latex foam comfort layer could help to reduce motion, but with only 2.0” of latex foam it’s just not enough to dramatically suppress motion transfer. As a result, we end up with a very high level of motion transfer.

Max. Acceleration

7.93 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-7.98 m/s²

Accel. Range

15.91 m/s²

If we look at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we see the highest motion from 0.00 to 0.77 seconds.

Happsy motion transfer chart
Happsy motion transfer chart

Motion drops off after 0.77 seconds, but it isn’t until 1.13 seconds that it returns to near zero levels. Both the motion intensity and motion duration are considerably higher / worse than average.

10

Response Test

The Happsy has an extremely fast response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.3 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

This is effectively instant and also tied for 1st with many other mattresses for the fastest responding mattress we’ve tested to date.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Both latex and coils spring back to shape instantly. When you combine them together you end up with a mattress that’s able to rebound back to shape so you’ll never have any difficulties moving around or getting in / out of bed.

Bounce Test

The Happsy mattress has a high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 11.71”. This is 2.08” more bounce than the average of 9.63”.

Max Bounce Height

Looking at the materials and design, it’s no surprise that we see a high bounce. Both latex and coils by themselves create ample bounce, and together they have even more bounce.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

While bounce is a preferential factor, in general, higher levels of bounce are better. Higher bounce makes it easier to move around, prevents any stuck feeling, and improves sex.

At 11.71”, the Happsy has plenty of bounce to enjoy all of the benefits of higher bounce. However, that higher bounce does negatively impact motion transfer (which we discussed above).

9.9

Edge Support Test

The Happsy mattress has excellent edge support for both sitting and lying. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a total sitting sinkage depth of 3.25”. This is significantly better than the average.

Max Sinkage

3.25″

Lying Support

Excellent

Based on all of our tests to date, on average, we have measured 4.55” of sitting sinkage. With a thinner 2.0” latex comfort layer, the Happsy has a highly supportive edge (since you very quickly engage with the support coils).

While this doesn’t do it any favors for pressure relief, it is greatly beneficial for edge support.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was equally as impressive. I felt well supported in all sleeping positions even when lying on the absolute edge. This was a bit surprising.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Typically, latex hybrids struggle with lying edge support, as latex often just isn’t supportive at the very edge of the foam.

As we saw with sitting edge support, the thinner 2.0” latex comfort layer helps ensure that lying edge support is better, as sleepers engage more with the coils.

9.9

Sex Test

To score sex performance we look at a number of different factors that all play a role in quality sex. Factors include bounce, edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling.

sex percent chart

All factors are not equal in terms of significance, but bounce, edge support, and noise are the 3 most important.

Sex Bounce

10

Edge Support

Noise

Here’s a look at our complete sex formula which outlines where each factor falls.

sex formula

We use the following scores, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScore
Bounce60%10
Edge Support20%9.9
Noise10%10
Pressure Relief5%9.0
Cooling5%9.5

For the Happsy mattress, these individual factors generated a sex score of 9.9.

This is a near-perfect score and overall, it does a lot right. Happsy offers high levels of bounce and excellent edge support, which is fantastic for sex.

It is quiet, has good cooling, and has sufficient pressure relief. A thicker comfort layer would have likely improved the pressure relief, but it may also have negatively impacted the bounce, so it’s a bit of a double-edged sword.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief on the Happsy mattress is good, but far from great. In our tests, I felt a slight to moderate degree of building pressure, especially in my hips and shoulder blades.

Comfort Layer

2.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

The Happsy only uses a 2.0” latex comfort layer. Ultimately, this just isn’t a very thick comfort layer. The best pressure relieving mattresses have a 4-6” thick comfort layer.

The thinner profile means sleepers sink more quickly through the foam and into the support coils.

Happsy edge support - back sleeping with vest
Happsy edge support – back sleeping with vest

When it comes to heavier sleepers, curvier bodies, and the heavier portions of even moderate / lightweight bodies (hips, butt, shoulders, etc.) you end up engaging more significantly with those coils, which creates the potential for pressure.

Fortunately, Happsy does offer a pillow top add-on, which will certainly improve pressure relief.

In my view, if you have any concerns at all about pressure relief then I would strongly recommend adding the pillow top to ensure your needs are met.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Happsy mattress is very good. Right out of the box, it had only a minimal smell. After the first day, it was fully off-gassed.

Initial Smell Strength

Minimal

Off-Gassing Period

This is likely due to the organic materials and hybrid construction.

It has more of a latex / rubber smell than anything else. It’s not nearly as offensive as more typical memory / poly foam off-gassing is.

Company

The Happsy brand has a good company score, with a 120-night trial period, a 20-year warranty, and free shipping and returns.

How firm is Happsy?

The Happsy mattress is a medium firmness which comes in at 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Happsy mattress has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

It uses a typical, but proven, material layer design with natural latex on top of pocketed coils. The quality of both the natural latex and coils feels strong and I don’t have any concerns about longevity.

My only significant support concern is for heavier sleepers, especially 250 and up. Happsy only uses 2.0” of comfort material, which just isn’t very much.

Sleeper WeightStomach SleepersSide SleepersBack Sleepers
Under 150 lbs.YesYesYes
150-250 lbs.YesYesYes
250-300 lbs.MaybeMaybeMaybe

The limited comfort layer could cause heavier sleepers to feel pressure on the heavier portions of the body. For most sleepers, the performance of the Happsy will be considerably improved by adding the optional pillow top.

Product Evolution

The Happsy mattress was launched in 2019 and has undergone no significant design or material changes since the launch.

If / when materials or design are updated we will make updates to this section.

How is Happsy Different?

So how is Happsy different from the competition? There are a couple stand-out features.

#1. Organic + Natural

Happsy uses organic latex, organic cotton, and organic wool. And it skips things like glues, adhesives, and chemical flame retardants.

The mattress also meets the criteria to be certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Happsy side

#2. Optional Topper

On its own, the Happsy mattress doesn’t really have fantastic pressure relief, but that does help keep the cost low. If you find that you need more pressure relief, they offer an optional mattress topper.

This topper ranges in price from $249-499, depending on what size you need, but provides an additional 2″ of comfort material. The topper will dramatically improve pressure relief for all sleepers.
