Our Verdict
The Hamuq Original mattress is a 12.5″ Canadian hybrid mattress made of poly foam, gel memory foam, and pocketed coil base. It has 3.5″ of comfort material, aimed at providing a balanced sleeper to a wide range of sleepers.
This mattress has minimal sinkage and high levels of bounce. It has an active sleeping surface without too much contour or hug.
The Hamuq is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, with a medium-firm feel. This firmness is generally suitable for sleepers of any sleeping position, but while testing the Hamuq I felt that the support dynamic to be better for back or stomach sleepers.
In our performance tests the Hamuq earned an overall score of 8.18, ranking it notably below the average of 8.57, based on all of our tests to date.
What this mattress lacks in performance, it may make up for with its low price, depending on what you’re looking for. A queen Hamuq is only C$999, making this mattress 47% less than average (a savings of C$861.)

How is Hamuq Different?
The Hamuq Original hybrid has an overall performance score that is below the average score, but also a price point that is below average as well—47% less than the average hybrid mattress.
Advantages
Besides price alone, other advantages of the Hamuq mattress include lower levels of motion transfer, and better sex performance for couples. The higher sex score is largely due to the higher levels of bounce. Pressure relief is also slightly above average, despite only having 3.5″ of comfort material (0.6″ less than average).
Neutral Factors
This mattress has minimal levels of sinkage and high levels of bounce.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages of the Hamuq include less-than-great cooling performance, slower material response time, and worse edge support. When seated at the edge, the Hamuq has 5.0″ of sinkage, compared to the average level of 4.05″.

Cooling Test
The Hamuq Original has fair cooling. During our tests, I felt a moderate to significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
79.6° F
Max Temp.
91.7° F
Ending Temp.
82.1° F
My lower back in particular was notably warm. The mattress includes several cooling materials and design features, including a cool-to-the-touch cover, gel foam, and hybrid design.
However, during our tests, these attributes didn’t seem to make a significant impact on performance.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.7° F. This is 2.0° more than the average of 89.7° F, based on all of our tests to date.
If there is a silver lining, it would be the heat dissipation curve. After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 6.1 degrees from minutes 0 to 1. This is 1.4° cooler than the average 0 to 1-minute decline of 4.7°.
The 0 to 5-minute decline was 9.6°, which is 1.9° cooler than the average of 7.7°. That said, while the heat dissipation curve is better than average, it also starts a full 2.0° warmer than the average.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is fair.
Sinkage Test
The Hamuq Original has minimal sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.99″. This is 0.17″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.16″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
1.99″
Sinkage Feel
Minimal
The mattress creates a floating feel. Instead of sinking down “in” the mattress you will lie more “on” the mattress.
My head, legs, and arms didn’t sink down into the mattress at any considerable depth. However, my butt and midsection sank further. Overall, the body contouring hug is very restrained.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

There is not a dramatic hugging sensation or body contouring on the mattress. This is neither good nor bad, but it is a more specific feel.
For those who love the dramatic body hug of memory foam, you’ll likely find Hamuq disappointing. But for those who like a floating feel, minimal sinkage, and restrained hug the Hamuq is a good fit.
Motion Transfer Test
The Hamuq Original has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.59 m/s². This is 14% less motion transfer than the average of 8.79 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
3.97 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-3.62 m/s²
Accel. Range
7.59 m/s²
The 3.5” thick comfort layer, quilted cover, and pocketed coils are all working together to reduce motion transfer.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.14 seconds. After 0.14 seconds, we see motion declining, but remaining moderate until 0.72 seconds. By 1.08 seconds we return to near-zero levels of energy.
Certainly, the restrained maximum motion transfer is the headline. However, the motion duration is far from ideal. Mattresses with the least motion are able to disperse all energy within 0.3 seconds.

The Hamuq struggles to bring motion to near-zero levels with the 1.08-second motion duration being slower than average. Even so, considering the maximum motion intensity and the price point, it’s hard to complain too much. I don’t expect motion will be an issue for most sleepers.
Response Test
The Hamuq Original is a mixed bag for material responsiveness, with a fast mostly recovered response time and a very slow fully recovered response time.
Mostly Recovered
0.5 sec.
Complete Recovery
1.8 sec.
In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.5 seconds, which is 0.08 seconds slower than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.8 seconds, which is 0.87 seconds slower than the average of 0.93 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The poly foam layers within the Hamuq are highly responsive and rebound back to shape more quickly.
However, the memory foam layer is a more traditional formulation and feel. That layer takes time to fully recover and reform back to shape. This slower material responsiveness makes it more difficult to move around the mattress.
Even so, considering the minimal sinkage depth of 0.5 seconds for most of the materials to recover, I don’t expect this will be a huge issue for most sleepers.
Bounce Test
The Hamuq Original has a high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 10.90″. This is 1.42″ more bounce than the average of 9.48″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
5.10″
Max. Rebound
5.80″
Total Bounce
10.90″
Hamuq’s minimal use of memory foam, taller than average 9.0” coil unit, and minimal sinkage depth are all contributing to the higher-than-average level of bounce.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
Ideally, I like to see 8-12” of bounce and the Hamuq is well within that range.
The higher-than-average bounce is a considerable boon to sex performance and also improves ease of movement. While ease of movement is hindered by the slower material responsiveness, the higher bounce helps to counteract the response time.
Edge Support Test
The Hamuq Original has fair sitting edge support and good lying edge support. In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 5.00″. This is 0.95″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.05″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max Sinkage
5.00″
Lying Support
Good
While sitting directly on the edge I did not feel well supported. 5.0” of sitting sinkage is notably more than the average. Fortunately, the mattress does retain its shape and there is no collapse of materials. And yet, it’s clear sitting edge support could be better.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. That said, the lying edge performance didn’t rise to the “excellent” or “outstanding” level.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The quilted cover on the mattress has a noted level of downward curvature at the edge. This can make lying on the edge feel less than ideally supportive as one part of the body will be slightly lower than the other.
The Hamuq uses two rows of reinforced edge support coils. Typically, we see much better edge support performance when mattresses are equipped with reinforced edge coils. However, that’s not what we measured or experienced with the Hamuq Original.
Sex Test
The Hamuq Original has good sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal, pressure relief is excellent, and bounce is very high.
In our bounce tests, we measured 10.90”, which is 1.42” more than the average of 9.48”. This extra bounce is the single greatest factor that is largely carrying the Hamuq’s sex score.

A high level of bounce can cover a multitude of material shortcomings when it comes to amorous activities.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 9.3 | Very High |
Edge Support | 20% | 7.5 | Fair |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Cooling | 5% | 7.0 | Fair |
On the not-so-good side of the equation, we have only fair cooling performance and less-than-great edge support. Sitting edge support measured 5.0” of sitting sinkage. This is considerably more than the average of 4.05”.
That extra sitting sinkage means the edge simply isn’t as robust, which limits the size of the sexable surface area. All that said, the sex score is still notably better than the average, based on all of our tests.
Pressure Relief Test
The Hamuq Original has an excellent level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant level of pressure points anywhere on my body. Overall, I found the Hamuq to be incredibly comfortable.
Comfort Layer
3.5″
Support Layer
9.0″
The mattress is equipped with 3.5″ of comfort material split across a quilted cover, 2.0” poly foam layer, and 0.5” memory foam layer. The Hamuq Original has 0.62″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.12″, based on all of our tests to date.
This combination of materials creates minimal sinkage and restrained body contour hug, but still is able to alleviate pressure points and create comfort. That said, the comfort dynamic is definitely better suited to the needs of back and stomach sleepers and less so for side sleepers.

In our pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.72 for back sleeping and 0.70 for stomach sleeper. While lying on my side PSI measured 1.41.
A PSI of 2.0 is considered a high pressure point. The Hamuq isn’t anywhere near those levels, but it’s clear that pressure on the side is considerably higher than pressure on the back and stomach.
In my view, this is likely the result of the minimal sinkage depth and floating feel that the mattress crates. That type of comfort dynamic can work great on the stomach and back, but side sleepers usually want a moderate or deep sinkage level.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.17 | 1.41 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |

Off-Gassing Test
The Hamuq Original had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 7 days.

How firm is Hamuq Original?
The Hamuq hybrid is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.

Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Hamuq is excellent. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with a 9.0″ support layer. This is 1.11″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.89″, based on all of our tests to date.
The middle layer of poly foam, which Hamuq calls “Zoned TRS Adaptive Gel” provides zoned support, which creates more support in the middle of the mattress where the body weighs more.

While support, in general, was excellent, this is certainly a mattress that feels more optimized to the needs of back and stomach sleepers. The Hamuq has minimal sinkage and creates more of a floating feel.
This support and comfort dynamic works well for back and stomach sleepers, but for many side sleepers it’s not ideal. Side sleepers typically need a more moderate or deep sinkage depth, as this allows the hips to be brought into alignment with the rest of the body.

This isn’t to say that no side sleepers will be comfortable on this mattress. But I do think to find the support comfortable you’ll need to prefer less body hug and less sinkage.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

Materials
The Hamuq contains a blend of foam and pocketed coils. From top to bottom the layers include:
- 1.0” quilted cover
- 2.0” poly foam
- 0.5” memory foam
- 9.0” pocketed coils

The Law Tag outlines the full breakdown of materials included in this mattress.
- Materials
- Polyurethane Foam
- New reclaimed fibers
- White cotton fibers
- Made by: 09T-02030515 1369874 Ontario Inc.
The Cover
The cover of the Hamuq is 1.0″ thick and quilted. The fabric is hypoallergenic and cool-to-the-touch with a slight stretch to it.

The sides of the Hamuq have a dark fabric that is designed to be more durable. There are no handles for carrying to rotating the mattress or zippers for maintenance. It has a very simple design, which helps to keep the price point down.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is a 2.0″ poly foam followed by a 1.0″ gel memory foam. This layering of foam is a little strange, with the gel memory foam being below the thicker poly foam.

At 2.0″ thick, the poly foam is likely the dominant feel of this mattress. The memory, which helps to create that deeper contour, is only 0.5″ thick and also placed under the poly foam.
The Support Layer
Below the memory foam is a 9.0″ layer of pocketed coils. These coils are individually encased in a thin fabric and designed to move independently of each other.

Product Evolution
The Hamuq mattress launched in 2017 with the Organic Hybrid being added to the lineup later. Since its original release, there have been no major changes made to the mattress.
