Our Verdict
The GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress is an 11.5″ memory foam hybrid made of memory foam, poly foam, pocketed coils, and a patented polymer designed for improved pressure relief.
This mattress has a moderate level of sinkage and bounce, resulting in a balanced feel when sitting or lying on the mattress.
It comes in a single firmness, 5 out of 10, with a medium feel. This firmness is generally suitable for a wide range of sleepers, although some heavier sleepers (especially those who sleep on their back or stomach) may find the feel to be too soft.
In our performance tests, the GhostBed scored a 9.07, which ranks it among the top 20% of all mattresses tested to date. For reference, the average mattress score is 8.57, based on over 270 mattresses tested to date.
The higher performance also comes with a higher-than-average price tag—42% more than the average memory foam hybrid for a difference of $655 (for a queen-sized mattress).

How is GhostBed 3D Matrix Different?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix had better overall performance than the average performance level (across over 270 mattresses tested to date), but also a price tag that falls 42% above the average—$655 more than the average memory foam hybrid.
Advantages
Advantages of the GhostBed 3D Matrix include better cooling performance, faster material response time, slightly better edge support (only by 0.05″), and a slightly thicker comfort layer (by 0.3″).
It also has an outstanding level of pressure relief along with being extremely comfortable.
Neutral Factors
This mattress had slightly deeper sinkage than average (5%) and a bounce level that is tied with the average level tested to date (9.52″). Both of these factors are considered neutral since they are very close to the average level.
Different sleepers may have different preferences in these areas, but the 3D Matrix provides a very balanced feel overall.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages include higher levels of motion transfer and a slightly thinner overall thickness (11.5″ compared to a 12.0″ average). The price may also be a disadvantage to some sleepers if you’re looking to stay at a below-average price.
Cooling Test
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has outstanding cooling performance. During our tests, not only did it not retain significant levels of heat, but it had a notable coolness in the top cover.
Baseline Temp.
74.5° F
Max Temp.
86.2° F
Ending Temp.
81.0° F
The 3D Matrix is equipped with a phase change cooling cover. Typically, phase change fabrics gradually warm to the temperature of your body. However, even after lying on this mattress for 15 minutes I still felt a noticeable level of cooling coming from the cover.
The other materials within the mattress including the polymer layer, gel memory foam, and hybrid design further help to improve cooling performance.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our objective temperature testing, we measured a max surface level temperature of 86.2° F, which is 3.36° cooler than average.
When we consider the objective data, subjective experience, and material analysis, I am confident most sleepers will find this mattress to be notably cool.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

Sinkage Test
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has a moderate level of sinkage. In our pressure point sinkage tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 2.26”. This is 0.11” more sinkage than the average of 2.15”.
Sinkage Depth
2.26″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a more dramatic body contouring hug, due to the thick 4.5” comfort layer and layer of memory foam on top. However, the more moderate level of sinkage helps to balance out the feel so I never felt overly enveloped by the mattress.
Motion Transfer Test
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has a low level of motion transfer. In our test, we measured a total acceleration range of 9.52 m/s². This is 8.3% more motion transfer than the average of 8.79 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
5.01 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-4.51 m/s²
Accel. Range
9.52 m/s²
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0 to 0.14 seconds.
Motion drops significantly thereafter, but we do see a small secondary motion spike from 0.45 to 0.60 seconds. By 0.68 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.

Overall, I was a bit surprised to see motion at this level. Typically, memory foam hybrids, especially those with a non-quilted cover, have quite low levels of motion. The 3D Matrix uses a fairly unique material with the polymer layer.
This layer is a semi-solid, gel-type material. While it’s creating great levels of pressure relief, I do wonder if it is at least in part responsible for some of the increase in motion.

In the same way the gel polymer of Purple mattresses easily transfers energy I suspect that this polymer layer is also transferring motion fairly easily. All that to say, while motion transfer could be lower it’s not bad by any stretch.
Response Test
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has a very fast material response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.3 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.9 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.3 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.9 sec.
These recovery speeds are 0.11 and 0.02 seconds faster than the average speeds, respectively. Often, memory foam and memory hybrids can struggle when it comes to response. However, we don’t see that with the 3D Matrix.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The foams used are highly resilient, while also providing the more exacting body contouring hug and excellent pressure relief that memory foam is known for. The high response speed ensures it’s easy to move around on the mattress and you won’t feel stuck on the mattress.
Bounce Test
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has a high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a bounce range of 9.52”. This is exactly the same amount of bounce as the average found across the 270+ mattresses tested to date.
Max. Depth
5.51″
Max. Rebound
4.01″
Total Bounce
9.52″
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
In general, I want to see a bounce of 8-12”. Bounce within this range is enough to facilitate ease of movement and improve sex performance, while not being so high as to create significant motion transfer issues.
At 9.52” the 3D Matrix is within my ideal range. At this level I don’t expect bounce will be an issue for most sleepers.
Edge Support Test
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has good edge support for sitting and excellent support for lying.
Max Sinkage
4.00″
Lying Support
Excellent
In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.0”. This is 0.05” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.05”.
I felt well-supported even when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress and there is no collapse of materials.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support is equally as good. In our lying edge support tests I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The 3D Matrix is equipped with 2 rows of reinforced edge support coils. These coils that run along the entire perimeter of the mattress help to improve edge support.
Sex Test
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has good sex performance. We measured the bounce height at 9.52”, which isn’t super high, but it’s plenty for the dance without pants.

In addition, edge support while sitting and lying on the mattress was excellent, which helps to extend the sexable surface area of the mattress. Lastly, the mattress is comfortable, cool, and doesn’t make much noise.
Sure, there is some room for improvement on bounce and edge support, but for most sleepers, the amorous activity performance will be more than sufficient.
How Do We Determine Sex Score?
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 8.4 | High |
Edge Support | 20% | 8.8 | Good |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Pressure Relief Test
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has outstanding good pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant level of pressure points building anywhere on my body. The mattress is incredibly comfortable.
Comfort Layer
4.5″
Support Layer
7.0″
The 3D Matrix uses 4.5” of comfort material, which is 0.3” more than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.2”, based on all of our tests to date. The foams used all look and feel incredibly high quality.

In particular, I’m impressed by the gel-like polymer layer that sits on top of the 2.0” gel memory foam layer.
This layer feels like a semi-solid gel, almost like Jello, but with a greater degree of structure and rigidity.
In my view, this material in particular greatly aids the comfort dynamic and gives the 3D Matrix a truly impressive level of pressure relief.
In our pressure mapping tests, there were no significant pressure points on my back or stomach. While lying on my side we see greater pressure build along the entire body, as well as in the shoulders and hips.
However, the max PSI is relatively quite low. Overall, I don’t expect pressure relief will be an issue for most sleepers.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Minimum | Maximum |
---|---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.29 | 0.02 | 1.86 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Minimum | Maximum |
---|---|---|---|
Back Sleepers | 0.17 | 0.02 | 1.06 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Minimum | Maximum |
---|---|---|---|
Stomach Sleepers | 0.15 | 0.02 | 1.16 |
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the GhostBed 3D Matrix was poor. The odor took 19 days to fully off-gas.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
19 days
Compared to the average off-gassing period of only 7 days, the Matrix is nearly 3 times as long. This could be an issue if you’re sensitive to strong odors.
Company
GhostBed has excellent company policies.
The company has been around since 2015 and has a pretty good track record of customer service and quality. Ghostbed’s parent company, Nature’s Sleep, has been in business since 2001.
They offer a 101-night trial period with a 20-year warranty. This is shorter than the average 163-night trial period, but still gives sleepers over 3 months to make a decision.

Shipping is free (within the 48 continental states) and returns are free (one per household).
Returns are required to abide by the 30-night break-in period, a set amount of time for your body to get used to the mattress. GhostBed does not allow return requests until this time period has passed, which is pretty common across the industry.
How Do We Determine Company Score?
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.

How firm is GhostBed 3D Matrix?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix has a firmness of 5 out of 10 with a medium feel. This is a touch softer than a medium-firm (the most popular firmness), which gives it a nice balance of softness and support.

Support & Sleeping Positions
The Ghostbed 3D Matrix has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress uses a 1.0” foundational support foam topped with a 6.0” pocketed coil unit.
This gives the mattress 7.0” of support materials, which is just slightly less than the average support layer thickness of 7.8”.

Despite being a little less than the average the Ghostbed still created ample support.
The medium feel gives it a firmness that’s appropriate to the needs and preferences of most sleepers. Overall, I’m pleased with the level of support and I expect most others will be as well.

The Cover
The GhostBed 3D Matrix is equipped with a thin and breathable cover infused with phase-change materials. Ghostbed calls it “Ghost Ice”. It creates a cool to the touch feel and has a significant positive impact for cooling.

The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is made up of a 1.5″ memory foam (blue layer) followed by a 2.0″ poly foam (gray layer). The gel polymer is poured into the convoluted top layer of memory foam.
Using this top layer like a Jello mold, the polymer sets up to become an integral part of the memory foam.

Below the 2.0″ poly foam (gray layer) is a thin 1.0″ poly foam (white layer). This bottom foam creates both comfort and transitional support.
The Support Layer
The support layer contains the 6.0″ pocketed coils as well as a 1.0″ support foam at the base of the mattress.
While I typically like to see 8.0″ coils in the support layer, the dynamic comfort layer of the 3D Matrix definitely helps compensate for the shorter coils.

Product Evolution
The GhostBed 3D Matrix was released in 2020 as the most advanced mattress within their lineup. To date, this mattress has received no notable changes.
In 2023, the GhostBed Massage was launched and became their new top-tier mattress, but the 3D Matrix continues to be a popular pick among sleepers for exceptional cooling and pressure relief.
