Considerations

  • Cooling is fine, but also far from great
  • Higher price, 65% more expensive than the average latex hybrid we’ve tested
  • 100-night trial, shorter than average

Our Verdict

The Coyuchi Marin REM is a 14.50″ latex hybrid mattress made of latex foam, micro coils, pocketed coils, and a coconut fiber pad within the support layer. This mattress has a 5.0″ comfort layer, designed for a luxury latex feel.

The Coyuchi Marin REM is available in two firmness levels that Coyuchi calls Plush and Medium-Firm. We tested the Medium-Firm version and found it has a slightly firm feel, 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

The medium-firm version has moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. It is likely that the Plush version could have slightly deeper sinkage and less bounce due to that softer feel.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.97, ranking the mattress in the top 25% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Coyuchi Marin REM is $4,000 for a queen-sized mattress, which is over 2X more expensive than the average latex hybrid. Compared to non-latex hybrids, it is over 2.5X the cost of the average mattress ($1,516 average price).

That said, this mattress comes highly certified with organic certifications for GOTS, GOLS, and Greenguard Gold. If you’re specifically looking for a certified organic latex hybrid, the Coyuchi is a solid option to consider.

How is Coyuchi Marin REM Different?

The Coyuchi Marin REM is a 14.50″ latex hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is significantly higher than average, but with a price that is also higher than the average. The result is a high-performing, higher-priced natural latex hybrid, offering the performance you’d hope to see at this price level.

Advantages

Specific advantages of the Coyuchi Marin REM include lower levels of motion transfer, faster material response time, fantastic edge support, and a better sex score as well.

This mattress has high levels of bounce, which is beneficial for couples and helps to keep intimacy active and engaging. There is a 5.0″ comfort layer on the Coyuchi, which improves the pressure relief as well.

Neutral Factors

The Coyuchi Marin has moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. Both of these factors are considered neutral since different sleepers will have different preferences for what they want. This mattress also has only a slight contour, which is pretty typical for latex hybrids.

If you’re looking for a mattress to “hug” you, this isn’t it, but for a more generalized contour, the Coyuchi is exactly what we’d expect it to be.

Coyuchi Marin Rem Relaxing
Coyuchi Marin Rem Relaxing

Disadvantages

Specific disadvantages of the Coyuchi Marin REM include a lower cooling score paired with a shorter trial period. The trial is only 100 nights, whereas the average trial length is 192 nights.

The price could also be a prohibitive disadvantage for some sleepers on a budget. A queen-sized Coyuchi is $4,000, which is 106% more expensive than the average latex hybrid. This equates to over $2,000 more than average, which is no small amount.

Granted, you’re getting higher performance, but if you’re looking for a deal, the price may be untenable.

8.0

Cooling Test

The Coyuchi Marin REM has good cooling. During our tests, I felt a slight level of heat retention around my body, but fortunately, it wasn’t anything too extreme.

Baseline Temp.

78.0° F

Max. Temp.

93.4° F

Ending Temp.

80.8° F

This mattress is all natural; as such, it skips out on many of the modern material enhancements aimed at improving cooling.

Instead, it works to improve cooling through a combination of improved airflow via coil layers and microcoils, while also avoiding heat buildup via latex comfort foams.

Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

Coyuchi Marin Rem After Cooling Test

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In addition, the organic cotton cover is designed to be more breathable. While this combination of design and material choices are certainly helping to improve cooling, it’s fair to say they aren’t miracle workers.

Based on our tests and data, it’s fair to say the mattress is slightly struggling with heat retention and breathability.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 93.4° F. This is 3.2° warmer than the average of 90.2° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 6.1 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.3 degrees cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Coyuchi Marin Rem V Heat Dissipation Chart

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident, in my view, that cooling is good.

Sinkage Test

The Coyuchi Marin REM has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.05″.

This is 0.21″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.26″, based on all of our tests to date. The mattress creates only a slight level of body contouring hug and has more of a floating feel.

Sinkage Depth

2.05″

Sinkage Feel

Moderate

Body Contour

Slight

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Coyuchi Marin Rem Sinkage Test
Coyuchi Marin Rem Sinkage Test

This causes the body to lie more “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress. This more buoyant feel is typical of many latex hybrid mattresses. It’s accompanied by a restrained hug and less sinkage.

This type of a feel is neither good nor bad, but it is a more specific and polarizing feel. Some sleepers really enjoy this feel, while others really will not.

You’ll want to be sure you’re comfortable with the more restrained body contouring hug and floating feel to enjoy the sinkage dynamic created by Coyuchi.

9.4

Motion Transfer Test

The Coyuchi Marin REM has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 6.23 m/s². This is 29% less motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s².

Quite frankly, I was really surprised by this level of motion transfer.

Accel. Range

6.23 m/s²

Motion Duration

1.22 seconds

Typically, latex hybrids have considerably more motion transfer than average. However, that’s not what we measured here.

Seemingly, this more novel mattress design that sandwiches 3 coil layers (2 pocketed coils and 1 microcoil unit) between latex and coconut fibers is able to rapidly dissipate energy, thereby reducing motion transfer.

Certainly, the thicker, high-profile design that uses high-performance materials from top to bottom is helping to meaningfully reduce motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.25 seconds.

Motion drops off notably thereafter, but we do still see a notable secondary energy spike from 0.6 to 0.7 seconds. By 1.22 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.32 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.90 seconds.

Motion Transfer Over Time

Coyuchi Marin Rem V Motion Transfer Chart

While motion duration is slightly worse than average, the motion intensity is significantly better than average. All motion factors considered, I expect most sleepers will find this level of motion transfer to be more than satisfactory.

9.6

Response Test

The Coyuchi Marin REM has an extremely fast mostly recovered response time and a fast fully recovered response time.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Fully Recovered

0.8 sec.

In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.22 seconds faster than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.8 seconds, which is 0.23 seconds faster than the average of 1.03 seconds. While these material recovery speeds aren’t quite instant, they are very close.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The rapid responsiveness ensures the mattress is easy to move around, and you’ll never feel stuck in the mattress. The avoidance of any stuck feeling is further helped by the below-average sinkage depth, slightly firm feel, and high bounce. Overall, material responsiveness and ease of movement is excellent.

Bounce Test

The Coyuchi Marin REM has a high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 10.75″. This is 2.06″ more bounce than the average of 8.69″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

4.79″

Max. Rebound

5.96″

Total Bounce

10.75″

Both latex and coils are highly resilient, springy, and responsive materials. When you design a mattress built primarily around latex and coils, it’s not surprising that it’s going to generate higher bounce.

While the microcoils and wool may be having a slightly suppressive effect on total bounce, the thicker latex and pocketed coil layers are clearly having a greater bounce-generating impact than the wool is having a suppressive effect.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

All of that extra bounce is beneficial to ease of movement and sex performance. Typically, higher bounce also means worse motion transfer.

However, the Marin REM handled motion transfer extremely well, most likely due to the novel design and higher quality materials. All things considered, this level of bounce is ideal for the Marin REM.

9.2

Edge Support Test

The Coyuchi Marin REM has excellent sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support.

Max. Sinkage

3.50″

Lying Support

Excellent

Reinforced Edge

No

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.50″. This is 0.34″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.84″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Coyuchi Marin Rem Edge Support Test With Vest
Coyuchi Marin Rem Edge Support Test With Vest

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was excellent in all sleeping positions. Surprisingly, the Coyuchi does not have any type of reinforced edge support.

Typically, when mattresses lack reinforced edge support, they will struggle more with both sitting and lying edge support. Nevertheless, the Coyuchi maintained a strong and robust edge.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The considerably thicker-than-average mattress height, coil-on-coil design, and high-quality materials at every level are all likely contributing factors to the strong edge support.

Latex and the pocketed coils, in particular, are more resilient and highly supportive. Given the relative thickness of these materials and the mattress at large, we have the necessary design elements to create excellent edge support.

9.2

Sex Test

The Coyuchi Marin REM has excellent sex performance. Let’s start with the pros, which include minimal noise, excellent pressure relief, and excellent edge support. We measured just 3.50” of sitting edge sinkage. This is notably less sinkage than average and means the edge is more supportive, extending the usable surface area of the mattress.

Coyuchi Marin Rem Edge Support
Coyuchi Marin Rem Edge Support

In addition, we measured a very high level of bounce at 10.75”. This is more bounce than average. When it comes to sex, more bounce is almost always better. The higher level of bounce helps to make amorous activities less tiring, less strenuous, and more enjoyable.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%9.2Very High
Edge Support20%9.4Excellent
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.0Excellent
Cooling5%8.0Good

Last but not least, we have cooling, which earned a good score, but also one that’s far from great. While cooling is a bit middling, the overall sex performance on the Marin REM is fantastic. I expect most couples will find it more than satisfactory.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Coyuchi Marin REM has an excellent level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body.

The mattress is equipped with 5.0″ of comfort material, which is 0.68″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.32″, based on all of our tests to date.

Comfort Layer

5.00″

Support Layer

9.50″

This mattress is a luxury-level latex hybrid and has the classic latex feel. That means a more restrained body contouring hug, less sinkage, and more of a floating, buoyant feel. This feel isn’t good or bad, but it is a specific one, one you’ll need to prefer to enjoy the pressure relief dynamic it delivers.

The Marin REM is a natural mattress, among other things, which means they are choosing not to use glues or other adhesives to keep the mattress layers held together. Instead, they are using tufting, which is a traditional method of holding internal mattress layers together.

Coyuchi Marin Rem Back Sleeping
Coyuchi Marin Rem Back Sleeping

Tufting holds the mattress together by driving a large needle and thick thread through the mattress from top to bottom. On the positive side, tufting means there are no glues, which can help to improve breathability, reduce VOCs, and reduce strong smells.

That said, tufting also means we have the tuft (sometimes called a pompom or rosette) on the mattress cover. In the case of the Coyuchi Marin REM, that tuft is incredibly deep, and some sleepers will certainly dislike the feel of lying in them.

During our tests, I found the tufts to be quite discomforting when any part of my body lay in or on them. The tufted depressions are around 1.5” deep at their deepest point with a diameter of roughly 7” at their widest.

Coyuchi Marin Rem Stomach Sleeping
Coyuchi Marin Rem Stomach Sleeping

These are among the deepest and widest diameter tufts I’ve seen on a mattress. The benefit of tufting is that it’s an all-natural way to hold the mattress together, IE, avoiding glues and adhesives.

However, the negative is that the deep tufted depressions can create support and comfort issues if you’re lying directly within the tufted areas.

Lastly, in our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.70, which is within the 1.0 PSI threshold we ideally want to see.

When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be excellent.

How firm is Coyuchi Marin REM?

The Coyuchi Marin REM mattress is available in two firmness options—Plush and Medium Firm. We tested the medium firm version.

Plush Version

We didn’t test the plush option, but I would estimate its firmness rating at a 5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This gives it a medium feel.

Firmness Chart 5

Medium Firm Version

The Medium Firm option that we tested for this review has a slightly firm feel, which we rate at a 7 out of 10.

Firmness Chart 7

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Coyuchi Marin REM is excellent. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress is equipped with a 9.5″ support layer. This is 1.52″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.98″, based on all of our tests to date.

Support FactorData
Comfort Layer 5.00″
Support Layer 9.50″
Firmness Medium and Slightly Firm
Body Contour Slight
Zoned Support No
Reinforced Edge No

For a mattress to create ideal support, it needs to both fully support the body, creating a neutral spinal alignment, while also providing sufficient pressure relief and comfort.

The Marin REM meets both of these requirements without any problems. This mattress is available in 2 firmness variants, plush and medium-firm. We tested the medium-firm version, which we rated at a 7 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most.

Coyuchi Marin Rem Side Sleeping
Coyuchi Marin Rem Side Sleeping

This gives the mattress a slightly firm feel. This 7 out of 10 firmness is slightly firmer than a typical medium-firm feel; as such, it’s more ideally suited to back and stomach sleepers and less ideal for many side sleepers.

If you sleep mostly on your side, I would recommend going with the plush version, which we estimate is a 5 out of 10 firmness, where 10 is the most firm.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

In all mattress tests, we cut the mattress open to examine the material quality. In doing so, I’m pleased with what I see. The materials all look high quality, both on the body and in-hand.

In our coil thickness tests, we measured a gauge of 15 on both pocketed coil units, which is a reasonably thick wire. Notably, this mattress does not use any type of zoned support. Instead, we have a consistent firmness from head to foot.

Coyuchi Marin Rem Materials Exposed

While zoned support is ideal, it’s less common in latex hybrid mattresses, so it’s unsurprising to see Coyuchi skip it.

Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the Coyuchi Marin REM is excellent.

Coyuchi describes this the Marin as a 13.0″ thick mattress, but the version we tested was notably thicker than advertised (14.5″ thick). For sleepers who want a luxury feel, this is likely to be a welcomed discrepancy, but if you’re looking for something low-profile, you might want to consider the extra thickness.
