Our Verdict
The Casper Original Hybrid mattress is a low-profile hybrid mattress (10.5″ thick) with a combination of poly foam, memory foam, and pocketed coils. It offers good performance across the board with the one exception being high levels of motion transfer.
It has minimal sinkage and moderate bounce giving the mattress a balanced surface with a slight floating feel.
It comes in a single firmness of 6 out of 10 where 10 is the most firm. This gives the mattress a medium-firm feel, making it a good option for all body types and sleeping positions.
The Casper Original Hybrid mattress has an overall score of 8.62 which placed it in the top 47%, comparing all mattresses tested to date. Looking specifically at hybrid mattresses, this mattress scores in the bottom 42%, but still has good performance overall.
If you’re specifically looking for a Casper, the Original Hybrid outperforms the Casper Original and it’s a reasonably good value at $1495. The Casper Original Hybrid is available for purchase at Casper.com (US) and Casper.ca (Canada).

How is the Casper Original Hybrid Different?
The Casper Original Hybrid has better overall performance than average and a price that is slightly above average as well—10% more than the average hybrid.
Advantages
Other advantages to the Casper Original Hybrid include slightly better cooling performance, fast material response time, better edge support than average, and slightly better sex performance as well.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has 22% less sinkage than average as well as 15% less bounce than average. Both sinkage and bounce are more preferential factors than anything else, but still important factors depending on the feel you’re looking for.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages include higher levels of motion transfer, better edge support than average, and a longer off-gassing period.
This mattress also has a thinner overall profile—only 10.5″ thick where the average is 12″ thick. This can negatively affect pressure relief for heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach.

Cooling Test
Cooling performance on the Casper Original Hybrid is excellent. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat build-up. The mattress does a nice job of creating plenty of breathability and airflow.
Baseline Temp.
68.8° F
Max Temp.
86.5° F
Ending Temp.
75.0° F
The Original Hybrid has a relatively thin comfort layer at 3.5” thick. While less than great for pressure relief, it is beneficial for cooling performance.
A thinner foam layer represents less material that heat could be absorbed into.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In addition, the hybrid design creates ample airflow for the mattress at large while the thin non-upholstered cover helps air flow in and out of the top layers.
If we look at our objective data we can see a maximum surface level temperature of 86.5°. From minutes 0 to 1 we saw a temperature decline of 6.4°.
From minutes 0 to 5 we saw an 11.5 temperature decline. Overall, I’m pleased with the cooling performance.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

Sinkage Test
The Casper Original Hybrid had a minimal level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.91″. This is 0.24″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.15″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
1.91″
Sinkage Feel
Minimal
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Notably, my butt and midsection sank deeper, whereas my back, shoulders, legs, and arms had far less sinkage.
It’s not quite a floating feeling for the lighter parts of my body, but it certainly leans more in that direction.
Overall, I would describe the feel as fairly balanced, with a leaning towards floating on “top” of the mattress, as opposed to lying “in” the mattress.
The Casper Original Hybrid uses a poly foam comfort layer on top of memory foam in the core. These foams, combined with the pocketed coils, create a more traditional, balanced, and restrained body contouring hug around sleepers.
Motion Transfer Test
The Casper Original Hybrid has a moderate level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 10.87 m/s². This is 24% more motion transfer than the average of 8.79 m/s².
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
As a mattress type, hybrid mattresses tend to have more motion transfer relative to all foam mattresses, so this level of motion is not unsurprising.
Max. Acceleration
4.55 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-6.32 m/s²
Accel. Range
10.87 m/s²
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.15 seconds.
By 0.60 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.
Looking at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.15 seconds. Motion drops off from 0.15 to 0.65 seconds, after which it returns to near-zero levels.

While the motion peaks are higher on the Casper Original Hybrid, the total motion duration is quite restrained.
While less motion is always better than more, I don’t expect most sleepers will be overly bothered by the level of motion on the mattress.
Response Test
The Casper Original Hybrid has a very fast response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.4 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.4 sec.
Both of these measurements are notably faster than the average. Based on all of our tests to date, we have measured an average mostly recovered response time of 0.45 seconds and an average fully recovered response time of 0.89 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
A faster response improves ease of movement, prevents a “stuck” feeling, and enhances sex. The Casper Original Hybrid responds nearly at the same speed as natural latex and other highly responsive poly foams. No complaints from me regarding responsiveness.
Bounce Test
The Casper Original Hybrid has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.21″. This is 1.31″ less bounce than the average of 9.52″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
4.79″
Max. Rebound
3.42″
Total Bounce

Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
Ideally, I like to see 8-12” of total bounce height. It’s enough to realize the associated benefits of more bounce (ease of movement and sex), without being so high as to create significant issues (increase motion and trampoline feel).
At 8.21” the Casper is on the low end of my ideal range, however, it’s still within said range. I don’t expect most sleepers will find the level of bounce too high or too low.
Edge Support Test
The Casper Original Hybrid has outstanding sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured just 2.25” of total sitting sinkage.
Max Sinkage
2.25″
Lying Support
Excellent
This is 1.80″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.05″, based on all of our tests to date.
The Casper uses a 3.5” perimeter edge support foam, which is a significant contributing factor in overall edge support performance.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support, while not quite to the level of sitting edge support, was still excellent. I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

As with sitting edge support, the 3.5” perimeter foam greatly enhances lying edge support. Overall, I’m extremely pleased with edge support performance.
Sex Test
The Casper Original Hybrid has good sex performance. On the positive side, edge support is outstanding at 2.25″ of sitting edge sinkage, which is 1.80 less than the average of 4.05″. Noise is minimal and pressure relief and cooling are both excellent.
On the negative side, the bounce level is only moderate—8.21″, which is 1.31″ less than the average bounce height of 9.52″.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 7.6 | Moderate |
Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Outstanding |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Although I would have liked to see more bounce to increase this score, this mattress would still be great for sex and shouldn’t hinder the experience in any way.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on the Casper Original Hybrid is excellent. During our tests, I felt no significant building pressure points on my body.
Comfort Layer
3.5″
Support Layer
7.0″
The mattress does a nice job of alleviating pressure and keeping sleepers comfortable. My only concern is the relatively thin 3.5” comfort layer.
When it comes to the comfort layer, thicker is generally better. Ideally, I like to see 4” or more of comfort material. A thicker comfort layer is especially important for heavier-weighted sleepers, in addition to side sleepers.

With only 3.5” of material, heavier weighted sleepers and heavier sections of the body are more likely to sink through the comfort material and into the support coils.
The Casper does a good job of resisting pressure. Even so, some heavier-weighted sleepers may find it’s an issue.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Casper Original Hybrid is a little stronger than I would expect for a hybrid.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
15 days
Right out of the box, the Casper Hybrid has a strong smell, which is not that uncommon. After unboxing, the mattress took 15 days to fully off-gas and be odor-free within the room.

This is a longer off-gassing period than the average of 7 days. While off-gassing does not generally affect the mattress long-term, it can lengthen the window of time that you are waiting before sleeping on the mattress.
Company
Casper offers a 100-night trial period with a 30-night adjustment period. Both shipping and returns are free.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 10 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 8.0 | Good |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing over 270+ mattresses tested to date, the average trial period is 176 nights, 76 nights longer than Casper offers.
The 10-year warranty is also shorter than average, as the average mattress warranty is 13 years (excluding 24% of mattresses that offer a lifetime warranty).
How firm is the Casper Original Hybrid?
The Casper Original Hybrid has a medium-firm feel or 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness would be suitable for a wide range of sleepers of various body weights and sleeping positions.

It is soft enough that lightweight sleepers won’t feel excessive pushback from the firmness, while also being firm enough that heavier sleepers won’t engage too deeply with the support layer (which can create pressure relief issues).
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Casper Original Hybrid is excellent. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress uses a zoned poly foam in the core of the mattress.

The 2.0” poly foam layer is more supported in the middle of the mattress, helping to create a more neutral spinal alignment. Typically, you see zoned support in the coil unit, but it’s not unheard of for a foam layer to be zoned.
In my view, zoned coils are typically better than zoned foam. All that said, I was generally pleased with the level of support I experienced.
The table below displays sleeper profiles that would be best suited for the Casper Original Hybrid mattress.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe |
I felt well supported and did not experience significant pressure point build-up. My only concern for support is for heavier-weighted sleepers, especially 300+ pounds. 3.5” of comfort material just likely won’t be enough for the heaviest bodies.
Design
The design of the Casper Original Hybrid combines poly foam, memory foam, and pocketed coils to create a mattress with a medium-firm feel and somewhat low-profile thickness.
Type
Hybrid
Thickness
10.5″
Firmness
6

This mattress aims to hit that balanced sweet spot that appeals to a very wide range of sleepers, including a range of body weights as well as sleeping positions.
Materials
The Casper Original Hybrid is advertised as an 11″ thick mattress, but ours measured about 0.5″ shy of that mark.
Within the 10.5″ profile, we measured four layers that make up the Casper Original Hybrid. From top to bottom, these layers are:
- 1.5” poly foam
- 2.0” memory foam
- 6.0” pocketed coil
- 1.0” support foam

While we’re on the topic of material names, let’s also discuss some fine print. The law tag has it labeled as 100% poly foam with a spring coil unit. However, the website says the middle layer is memory foam.

Memory foam is generally labeled as viscoelastic polyurathane foam law tags. In any case, I am not sure why we’re seeing the discrepancy here.
In our tests of the Casper Original, which seemingly has an identical foam comfort layer, the law tag was labeled 71% polyurethane foam pad and 29% viscoelastic polyurethane foam pad.
The Cover
The cover of the Casper Original Hybrid is the same cover we’ve seen on both the Casper as well as the Casper Original foam mattress.

The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer of the Casper Original Hybrid is made up of two layers of foam. There is a top layer of perforated poly foam. The holes in this layer help the mattress to have a fast response time as well as great cooling.

Below the top layer is a secondary layer of foam. The second layer is a 2.0″ memory foam, which is designed to enhance pressure relief, deep compression, and overall comfort of the mattress.
The Support Layer
The support layer of the Casper Original Hybrid is a 6.0″ layer of pocketed coils with a 1.0″ layer of high-density support foam below.

At the edges of the mattress, there is a perimeter-wrapping foam that helps reinforce the edges as well as keep the coils contained.
This perimeter foam is 3.5″ thick and really helps provide great edge support (as our tests showed above).

Product Evolution
The Casper Original Hybrid was launched in 2019, as an off-shoot of the Casper Original all-foam mattress launched in 2014.
Since its launch in 2019, there have been no significant changes made to the material construction of the Casper Original Hybrid.
