Considerations

  • Limited pressure relief, especially for heavier sleepers
  • Strong off-gassing
  • Lying edge support really struggles

Our Verdict

The Casper Cooling Select is an 11.75″ hybrid mattress and is exclusively sold at Costco. It is made with memory foam, poly foam, and a pocketed coil support base.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. Both bounce and sinkage are preferential, but these factors give this mattress an active feel with limited contour and not too much hug.

The Cooling Select is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.

In our performance tests, the Cooling Select Hybrid had an overall score of 8.63, placing it in the top 45% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking specifically at hybrid mattresses, the Casper Cooling Select scores in the bottom 42% of all hybrids tested to date (87 mattresses considered).

The advantage of the Casper Cooling Select is the price tag. This mattress is only $799 for a queen, a savings of over 40% compared to the average hybrid mattress. If you’re on a tight budget, this could be an option for lighter sleepers under 250 lbs.

How is Casper Cooling Select Different?

The Casper Cooling Select is an 11.75″ hybrid mattress with an overall performance that is just marginally better than average and a price tag that is significantly less than average—40% less than the average hybrid mattress.

Advantages

Besides the low price, other advantages of the Casper Cooling Select include better cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, faster material response time, and a slightly thicker comfort layer.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has minimal sinkage and a moderate level of bounce. Both bounce and sinkage are considered neutral factors as different sleepers may have different preferences in these areas.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages of the Casper Cooling Select Hybrid include a lack of edge support, especially when lying directly on the edge of the mattress. This lack of edge support also negatively affects the sex score.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Size
Casper Cooling Select Hybrid

The comfort layer is slightly thicker than average, but we see the consequences of worse material quality in the lack of pressure relief. While this may not be an issue for lighter weighted sleepers, I would recommend a different mattress for sleepers over 250 lbs.

9.0

Cooling Test

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has excellent cooling performance. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

76.4° F

Max Temp.

87.8° F

Ending Temp.

81.1° F

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The combination of thin knit cover and hybrid design are all working together to keep the mattress cooler. The thin, non-quilted cover helps create airflow in and out of the mattress.

In addition, the layer of pocketed support coils creates more airflow and is simply less material in which heat could be retained.

In our objective temperature testing, we measured a max surface level temperature of 87.8° F, which is 1.8° cooler than the average of 89.6°.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Heat Dissipation Chart

The mattress breathed well, avoided notable heat retention, and remained comfortably cool during our testing. I expect most sleepers will find this level of cooling performance to be more than sufficient.

Sinkage Test

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has a minimal level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured 1.89” of pressure point sinkage. This is 0.23” less sinkage than the average of 2.12”.

Sinkage Depth

1.89″

Sinkage Feel

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Sinkage
Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Sinkage

The mattress creates more of a floating feel where the body lies on “top” of the mattress, as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress.

What sinkage there is is more generalized around the body, as opposed to creating the exacting and dramatic body contouring hug that memory foam mattresses are known for.

9.4

Motion Transfer Test

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has a very low level of motion transfer. During our test, we measured 6.39 m/s² of acceleration range. This is 27% less motion than the average of 8.73 m/s².

With 4.5” of comfort foam, pocketed coils, and a loose-knit cover, the mattress has the right material conditions to mitigate motion transfer.

Max. Acceleration

3.15 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-3.24 m/s²

Accel. Range

6.39 m/s²

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0 to 0.23 seconds. Motion drops rapidly thereafter and by 0.67 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of motion.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Motion Transfer Chart
Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Motion Transfer Chart

Motion peaks, valleys, and duration are all kept to reasonable, well-restrained levels. I expect most sleepers will find the level of motion to be perfectly acceptable.

9.9

Response Test

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has a very fast material response. During our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds. This is 0.21 seconds faster than the average mostly recovered speed of 0.41 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.4 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

During our fully recovered response, we measured a responsiveness speed of 0.4 seconds, which is 0.49 seconds faster than the average of 0.89 seconds.

At 0.2 and 0.4 seconds to recover, this is nearly tied with the fastest responsiveness mattresses, which are 0.2 (mostly recovered) and 0.3 seconds (full recovery) to recover back to shape.

Suffice to say, at these responsiveness speeds the mattress rebounds back to shape effectively instantly. This recovery speed ensures you’ll never feel stuck on the mattress and it’s easy to move around on.

Bounce Test

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.78”. This is 0.89” less bounce than the average of 9.67”. Ideally, I like to see 8-12” of total bounce height.

Max. Depth

5.25″

Max. Rebound

3.53″

Total Bounce

8.78″

Mattresses within this range are able to better mitigate motion transfer, while still having enough bounce for ease of movement and improving sex performance. The Cooling Select Hybrid is on the low end of my ideal range, but still within it.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Bounce Depth
Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Bounce Depth

Max Bounce Height

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

While more bounce would have undoubtedly improved amorous activities, it also would have likely increased motion. I expect most sleepers will find this level of bounce to be sufficient.

8.2

Edge Support Test

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has a good level of edge support, but it certainly doesn’t rise to the “excellent” or “outstanding” level.

Max Sinkage

3.50″

Lying Support

Fair

In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.5”. This is 0.52” less sitting compression than the average of 4.02”.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

However, the cover is quite slippery. As a result, I found myself sort of sliding off while sitting too near the edge. Lying edge support was also a bit disappointing and I found the performance to be fair at best.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Heavy Lying Edge Support

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I did not feel tremendously well supported in any sleeping position. The mattress uses a perimeter edge support foam, which is definitely helping. However, it just isn’t enough, in my view.

The edge feels squishy while lying directly on it. This is most likely a product of the thicker-than-average 4.5” comfort layer.

This extra comfort material is great for pressure relief and comfort but doesn’t do the mattress any favors concerning lying edge support.

8.4

Sex Test

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has good sex performance, but it’s also far from great. Its best attributes were the minimal noise, reasonably good sitting edge support, and excellent cooling.

From there, we have a middling performance from pressure relief and bounce.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%8.0High
Edge Support20%9.4Excellent
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%8.0Good
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

Unfortunately, with just 8.78” of bounce it’s just not enough to push the Casper to the greatest levels of amorous activities.

The lower-than-average bounce greatly facilitates lower motion, but it’s also the primary reason for the weaker sex performance.

Pressure Relief Test

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has a good level of pressure relief performance. However, it fails to rise to the “excellent” or “outstanding” level. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of pressure points.

Comfort Layer

4.5″

Support Layer

7.3″

That said, I did feel that the comfort dynamic was lacking. The mattress is equipped with 4.5” of comfort material, which is 0.4” thicker than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.1”, based on all of our tests to date.

Having more comfort material is great to see and is definitely helping to improve the pressure relief dynamic.

Nevertheless, the quality of these foam layers just isn’t at the same level as many mattresses we’ve tested with a better pressure relief dynamic.

The mattress creates more of a floating feel. What body contouring hug there is is more generalized and just feels sort of “flat” to lie on.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid My Review
Casper Cooling Select Hybrid My Review

When I compare this to Casper’s Dream Max and Casper Snow mattresses there is a significant difference in the experience.

All that said, given the price point, it’s hard to complain too much. For most sleepers, the pressure relief performance will be sufficient.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Casper Cooling Select Hybrid is strong right out of the box. The odors took over 2 weeks to fully dissipate—a total of 15 days. Compared to the average off-gassing duration (6 days) this performance is 2.5 times slower than average.

For sleepers who are sensitive to strong odors, this could be an issue worth considering. That being said, once the mattress has fully off-gassed it shouldn’t be a factor that continues to negatively impact the mattress.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid has a good level of support. As with pressure relief, it’s good, but far from great. It certainly doesn’t rise to the “excellent” or “outstanding” level of support.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Perimeter Foam
Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Perimeter Foam

During our tests, I felt reasonably well-supported. However, the materials of the mattress don’t give me great confidence in the mattress’s ability to support heavier-weighted bodies.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

The Cooling Select Hybrid is equipped with a 7.25” support layer. This is notably thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.9”, based on all of our tests to date. In addition, the Select Hybrid uses a zoned foam support layer.

However, I don’t feel like this zoned layer is having a significant impact on support performance. The mattress creates a generalized body compression (as opposed to an exact body contouring hug that you would get with more typical memory foam).

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid

This type of support dynamic can be fine, provided you like the feel and provided the mattress has a more robust support layer. In my view, the coil layer just doesn’t feel particularly high quality.

For sleepers over 250 pounds, I would recommend going with a different mattress (Casper Dream would be a good step up). All that said, given the price point, this level of performance is not unexpected or unreasonable.

Design

The Casper Cooling Select is an 11.75″ hybrid (12″ according to Casper and Costco) with a medium-firm feel. This mattress is designed to be the Costo-exclusive hybrid choice for sleepers who want a budget-friendly Casper hybrid.

The Cover

The cover of this mattress is a knit cover with cooling properties. It is thin and breathable with a dark gray binding and reinforced side panels.

The Comfort Layer

Beneath the cover and the fire sock are three layers of foam. The top is a 1.5″ poly foam (gray) followed by a 1.5″ memory foam (blue).

The third foam is a 1.5″ poly foam (teal) that functions more as a transitional foam between the comfort layers and the support layer at the base.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Materials
Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Materials

The third layer of foam (teal) is a zoned layer which uses a denser, more supportive foam at the central core of the mattress. This helps to maintain spinal alignment when lying on the mattress.

The Support Layer

The support layer contains a 5.75″ layer of pocketed coils, which is thinner than many other coil-based mattresses. Oftentimes a 12″ hybrid will have anywhere between 6-8″ of coils. It is pretty rare that we ever see less than 6″ of coils.

Below the coils is a 1.5″ high-density support foam at the base of the mattress. This helps provide a strong foundational base for the mattress.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid Support Coils

A dense foam is also used along the perimeter of the mattress, which is designed to improve edge support and also limit noise and motion transfer from the coils.

Product Evolution

The Casper Cooling Select Hybrid is a Costco-exclusive mattress. It is new to the Costco lineup as of 2024, when Casper relaunched their entire collection of mattresses.

The Cooling Select Hybrid replaced earlier versions of Casper Costco mattresses, which included:

Currently, the Casper Cooling Select Hybrid and Casper Cooling Select Memory Foam are the only Casper mattresses available from Costco.
