Best For
- Excellent cooling, especially for a memory foam mattress. Max temperature of only 90.1°F.
- Extremely low motion transfer, only 2.39 m/s² in our acceleration tests.
- Excellent pressure relief. Mattress does a nice job at contouring to a comfortable, yet supportive shape.
Considerations
- Low bounce rate, which will have a negative impact for sex.
- Sitting edge support isn’t amazing (but it’s fine for lying on the edge)
- Not the fastest response time, but not the slowest either
Our Verdict
The Tranquillium mattress by BedInABox is a 12″ classic memory foam mattress with a thin Tencel cover, gel-infused memory foam, and a 7″ support foam base.
It has moderate levels of both bounce and sinkage, which will create a balanced feel that is neither overly enveloping nor springy. It also has a medium-firm feel that is rated as a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
The BedInABox Tranquillium has a performance score of 8.67, ranking it among the top 48% of all mattresses tested to date. Specifically looking at memory foam mattresses, it is within the top 31% of all tested to date.
A queen-size costs $1,177, which is $196 or 14% less than the average mattress but $32 more than the average memory foam mattress.
While we have seen higher overall scores and lower prices, the Tranquillium does a lot right and is absolutely worth the consideration. The classic memory foam feel creates excellent pressure relief with a contouring hug that’s suitable for most sleepers and sleeper positions.

How is the Tranquillium Different?
The BedInABox Tranquillium mattress has slightly better overall performance than average and a price tag that is slightly above average as well—3% more than the average memory foam mattress—an increase of $32 for a queen-sized mattress.
Advantages
Specific advantages for the Tranquillium include slightly better cooling performance, 72% lower levels of motion transfer, and a long 20-year warranty (longer than the 13-year average).
Neutral Factors
This mattress has 5% less sinkage than average as well as 37% less bounce. Both sinkage and bounce are more preferential factors, but still certainly worth considering, depending on the kind of feel you’re looking for.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages of the Tranquillium include slower material response time, poorer edge support, and poorer sex performance (due mainly because of the lower levels of bounce).

Cooling Test
Overall, we found the cooling performance on the BedInABox Tranquillium to be excellent.
Baseline Temp.
83.3° F
Max. Temp.
90.1° F
Ending Temp.
84.4° F
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our objective tests, the Tranquillium mattress only reached a maximum temperature of 90.1°F.
This is a full 1.5° cooler than the average temperature we’ve measured across all mattresses tested to date.
In addition, and arguably more importantly, the heat dissipation was excellent.
Within 1 minute, the Tranquillium mattress dropped to 85.7°, a 4.4° decline. By the 5-minute mark, the Tranquillium mattress reached 85°.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

While any further decline in temperature over time is great, seeing such a significant drop within 1 minute is incredibly noteworthy.
This type of rapid heat dissipation helps the mattress to remain cool and comfortable during the night.
Subjectively speaking, during our tests I did not feel warm at any point.
The BedInABox Tranquillium did a fantastic job at breathing well and maintaining a comfortable temperature for sleeping.
Sinkage Test
In our pressure point tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 2.05”. This is pretty typical for a mattress at this firmness level. The average sinkage depth is 2.15″ so this isn’t too far off while being slightly less than average.
Sinkage Depth
2.05″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
The Tranqillium mattress has a fairly typical memory foam hug and contour.

It allows your body to sink in and contour to your unique shape, creating pressure relief around the entirety of your body.
Motion Transfer Test
Motion transfer on the Tranquillium was incredibly low. The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
Our accelerometer tests measured 2.39 m/s² of acceleration range. This is 73% lower than the average acceleration range across all mattresses we’ve tested, which is 8.80 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
1.34 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-1.05 m/s²
Accel. Range
2.39 m/s²
The 3.0” top layer of memory foam does an excellent job at rapidly absorbing and dissipating energy, without creating any type of significant motion transfer event across the mattress.

Within 0.3 seconds most of the motion has dissipated, returning to near zero shortly thereafter. This is a very fast energy dissipation timeline.
As a result, the Tranquillium mattress is an excellent choice for couples, as the low-motion transfer reduces the likelihood of disturbing a partner during the night.
Response Test
In our tests, we measured response time at 0.6 seconds to mostly recover and 0.9 seconds for a full material recovery.
Mostly Recovered
0.6 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.9 sec.
Faster response time helps prevent sleepers from feeling stuck in the mattress, and in general, is just a more comfortable feel.
Memory foam typically has a slower response time, and we see a little bit of that here.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
Many poly foams, latex foam, and pocketed coils will respond much quicker. However, a 0.6-second recovery isn’t a slow response by any stretch.
We’ve tested memory foam mattresses as slow as 3 seconds to mostly recover (the original Nectar memory foam mattress). As a result, the 0.6 second recovery time on the response time is a respectable number.
Bounce Test
Bounce on the Tranquillium is quite low. In our tests, we measured a maximum bounce range of 5.97”. However, most of this bounce is on the downward compression, which has a maximum sinkage depth of 5.3”.
Max. Depth
5.3″
Max. Rebound
0.67″
Total Bounce
5.97″
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The maximum height on the rebound achieved 0.67”. Bounce is a highly preferential feel factor. Some sleepers want me, some want less. It’s really only mission-critical for sex (which we’ll discuss further down the page).
In any case, the Tranqiullium absolutely has a low level of bounce. This gives it the more classic “dead” memory foam feel, with respect to bounce.
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
If you’re switching from an innerspring, coil, or more traditional mattress that shift could be fairly dramatic.
So that’s something you definitely want to keep in mind when considering the BedInABox Tranquillium or any memory foam mattress.
Edge Support Test
Edge support was good, but not great (at least while sitting). In our tests, we measured a maximum edge support compression of 5.5” while sitting on the mattress.
This is 1.45” more than the average edge compression we’ve tested on all mattresses so far.
Max. Sinkage
5.5″
Lying Support
Excellent
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While sitting edge support leaves something to be desired, edge support while lying on the mattress does a nice job.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

During our tests, I felt well-supported in all positions while lying on the mattress. In addition, I also felt no sensation that I was going to be rolled out of the mattress.

Sex Test
The BedInABox Tranquilium has mediocre sex performance. Suffice to say that this is not one of the stronger selling points for this mattress.
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 6.2 | Low |
Edge Support | 20% | 6.9 | Mediocre |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
The bounce was okay, but a little less than what we typically like to see for a mattress with sex in mind.
Edge support was another issue. With over 5″ of sinkage, that’s really more than would be comfortable for any activities that may happen on the edge of the mattress.

If amorous activities on the mattress edge aren’t your thing, this could be a non-factor, but is certainly worth mentioning.
Aside from these two issues, noise pressure relief, and cooling were all really great—no issues to note here.
Pressure Relief Test
I found the pressure relief to be excellent. A 3.0” top comfort layer of memory foam really does a nice job at providing excellent contour and hug, both of which relieve significant pressure relief.
Comfort Layer
5.0″
Support Layer
7.0″
In addition, the 2.0″ poly foam below acts as a nice transitional layer between the comfort foam and the support foam. For side sleepers or heavier sleepers, the transitional foam is an important part of pressure relief.
Off-Gassing Test
There is only a moderate smell upon the initial unboxing. What smell there was fully dissipated within 2 days.
I was pleasantly surprised at the relatively minimal odor and the rapidity of dissipation.
Initial Smell Strength
Moderate
Off-Gassing Period
2 days
Especially for memory foams, this is not always the case, and odors can be quite strong or linger for many days or even weeks.

BedInABox launched in 2004 and currently have 7 different models to choose from:
- Essential
- Original
- Original Hybrid
- Tranquillium
- Azul
- Dual-Hybrid
- Eco-Lux
As a company, their terms and conditions feel pretty consumer-friendly and competitive to other terms we’ve seen out there.
The 120-night trial period is okay, but it falls short of the 176-night average found across the 270+ mattresses tested to date. However, this is coupled with a 20-year warranty, which is 7 years longer than average. Combined, these help ensure sleepers buy with confidence.
Shipping and returns are both free and the mattress ships from the US.
How firm is the Tranquillium?
The firmness of the Tranquillium mattress is around a 6.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

It has the classic slightly firm feel that memory foam can provide without the heat retention or slow response time. The result is a pretty balanced feel.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Lighter-weight sleepers are more likely to experience a little more firmness based on weight.
For comparison, heavier sleepers are more likely to experience a little more softness. The total firmness range can be expected to vary between 6 to 7 (out of 10.)

Design
The design of this mattress is an all-foam construction, which aims to hit that sweet spot between memory foam and poly foams. It takes the low motion transfer of memory foam and combines it with the fast response time of a poly foam.

Materials
The materials of the Tranquillium mattress consist of a triple foam blend, each with a different color and associated purpose.
Layers break down as follows:
- 3.0″ gel memory foam
- 2.0″ poly foam
- 7.0″ support foam

The Cover
The cover of this mattress is a soft knit Tencel material with good stretch and breathability. It is tight against the mattress for a smooth finish with limited hug and contour.

There is a subtle texture on the top of the cover with contrasting navy panels on the side.
The Comfort Layer
Beneath the cover is a 3.0″ layer of gel memory foam. The gel is infused throughout the foam which improves cooling and limits heat retention, which can sometimes be an issue with memory foam mattresses.

Directly below the comfort foam is a pink 2.0″ layer of transitional poly foam. This layer is a bit denser and helps improve pressure relief and deep compression as a sleeper interacts with the comfort foam above.
The Support Layer
The bottom layer of foam is an ultra-dense support foam that provides the bulk of the support as sleepers engage with all three foams.

Quality foam at the base supports sleepers and is an important part of the overall comfort.
Product Evolution
Although BedInABox was introduced in 2004, the Tranquillium mattress wasn’t launched until 2012.
And since then, there have been a few changes.
Older versions of the Tranquillium mattress show it as an 11″ mattress with only two foam layers—3″ of comfort foam and 8″ of support foam.
Today, the Tranquillium uses three distinctly different layers—3″ of comfort foam, 2″ of transitional poly foam, and 7″ of support foam.
This also means that the present-day Tranquillium is also 1″ thicker in profile.
