Best For
- Fantastic cooling performance
- Great pressure relief, despite only having 2.75″ of comfort material

- Very strong odors out of the box, took 17 days to fully dissipate
- Edge support is slightly worse than average
Our Verdict
The Avocado Organic Hybrid is an 11.5″ latex hybrid mattress made of latex foam and pocketed coils. It has a quilted cover that gives the mattress a plush feel without too dramatic a contour. This mattress is the only Avocado mattress that is sold on the Avocado website as well as at Costco.
The Avocado Organic Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. On our firmness scale, this ends up being a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
This mattress has deep sinkage and high levels of bounce. This is deeper sinkage than what we measured on the standard Avocado Green.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.42, ranking the mattress in the bottom 33% of all mattresses tested to date. For a latex hybrid mattress, this is not the score I want to see, as latex hybrids usually have above-average performance.
The Avocado Organic Hybrid is $1,499 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 22% less expensive than the average latex hybrid. If you’re looking for a value latex hybrid, with deeper sinkage, the Avocado Organic Hybrid could be a good pick, but bear in mind, there are some trade-offs.
With the Avocado Organic Hybrid, you’ll be getting 46% fewer support coils than you would on the Avocado Green for only $100 difference (and a lower overall performance score as well).

How is Avocado Organic Hybrid Different?
The Avocado Organic Hybrid is an 11.5″ latex hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is slightly lower than the average mattress and a price that is slightly lower than average as well.
If you are looking for savings and are okay with a few disadvantages, this could be a good route to go.
Advantages
Specific advantages of the Avocado Organic Hybrid include better cooling performance, extremely fast material responsiveness, an above-average sex score, and great pressure relief as well.
The mattress comes with a 365-night trial period, which is longer than average as well. For reference, the average is 173 nights.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has deep sinkage and high bounce. Especially for side sleepers, this deeper level of sinkage can be beneficial at helping maintain spinal alignment.

Disadvantages
Given the lower price, there are some disadvantages to this mattress. First and foremost, the Avocado has higher levels of motion transfer—48% more motion than the average mattress.
Edge support and off-gassing are also slightly worse than average. The mattress has a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. It took 17 days to stop smelling, where the average duration is only 7 days. If you’re sensitive to strong odors, this could be an issue.
Cooling Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has excellent cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
78.6° F
Max. Temp.
89.0° F
Ending Temp.
81.5° F
This mattress uses a simple, but proven latex hybrid design. Latex, as a material type, doesn’t retain heat to the same degree that many poly and memory foams will.
In addition, the pocketed coil base is helping to bring additional airflow into the mattress. Lastly, the mattress has a less enveloping feel. This means there is less material wrapping up and around the body, which further helps to improve breathability.
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our tests of the Avocado Luxury and Avocado Green Pillow Top both of those models had a more enveloped feel, which had a negative impact on their cooling performance.
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.0° F. This is 1.0° less than the average of 90.0° F, based on all of our tests to date.
After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 4.6 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.2 degrees warmer than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.
Sinkage Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has deep sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.35″. This is 0.14″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.21″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
2.35″
Sinkage Feel
Deep
Body Contour
Balanced
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a balanced body contouring hug. The 0.5” quilted cover helps to create immediate softness and a more balanced and even hug.
In addition, the latex foam below has a more restrained and generalized hugging contour around the body. This is in contrast to memory foam and many types of poly foam, which creates a more exacting and precise hug around the body.
The latex layer, combined with the quilted cover, creates a more balanced feel that many types of sleepers can enjoy. In my view, this combination makes for a latex hybrid that is far less polarizing than many other latex hybrids we’ve tested.
Motion Transfer Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has a high level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 13.08 m/s². This is 49% more motion transfer than the average of 8.77 m/s².
Accel. Range
13.08 m/s²
Motion Duration
1.60 seconds
Latex hybrids often struggle with motion transfer and that’s exactly what we measured here on the Avocado Organic Hybrid.
Latex is highly resilient, springy, bouncy, and responsive. The same is true of the pocketed coil unit.
These design choices, in combination with the thinner-than-average 11” total height, deliver tons of response and bounce, which has a notable negative impact on motion transfer.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.75 seconds. By 1.60 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.72 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.88 seconds.
Motion Transfer Over Time

Both motion duration and motion intensity are significantly worse than average. If low motion transfer is important to you at all then I would advise going with a different mattress.
Response Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has an extremely fast material response. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.20 seconds faster than the average of 0.40 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Fully Recovered
0.3 sec.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.69 seconds faster than the average of 0.99 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
These response speeds are effectively instant and are also tied for 1st as the fastest we’ve tested to date.
Latex hybrids almost universally have incredibly quick response, and that’s exactly what we measured here with the Avocado Organic Hybrid. The rapid material recovery ensures you’ll never feel stuck in the mattress and it’s easy to move around on.
Bounce Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has a high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 10.71″. This is 1.86″ more bounce than the average of 8.85″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
5.86″
Max. Rebound
4.85″
Total Bounce
10.71″
Latex as a material type creates more bounce and the same is true for pocketed coils. Together, these materials are doing exactly what we expect from a latex hybrid and creating a higher-than-average level of bounce.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The increased bounce helps improve sex performance and ease of movement. However, the higher bounce is also a notable reason that motion transfer is worse than average.
As such, bounce is a double-edged sword. You should consider what’s most important to you. Improved sex and better ease of movement? Or lower motion transfer?
Edge Support Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has good sitting edge support and good lying edge support.
Max. Sinkage
4.00″
Lying Support
Good
Reinforced Edge
Yes
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.00″. This is 0.05″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 3.95″, based on all of our tests to date.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was good in all sleeping positions. Notably, this mattress does not use any type of reinforced edge support coil.
The coils along the perimeter are narrower and 16 gauge. All other coils are a larger diameter and 14 gauge (which is a thicker wire than the 16 gauge coil).
The narrower diameter may be helping to improve edge support to some degree, however, it’s not as high performance as other more explicit reinforced edge support coils we’ve tested on other mattresses.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Beyond the lack of a reinforced edge, the mattress is also just 11” thick, which is thinner than average.
Thinner mattresses often struggle to create ideal edge support. All factors considered, the edge support performance is still good, but it’s clear there is room for improvement.
Sex Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has excellent sex performance. Noise is minimal and both pressure relief and cooling are excellent. In addition, bounce is higher than average at 10.71”.

More bounce is almost always better for sex, as it makes the mattress more engaging and works with couples to facilitate amorous activity. The only area where sex performance could have been improved is edge support, which we measured at 4.00” of sitting edge sinkage.
| Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounce | 65% | 9.2 | Very High |
| Edge Support | 20% | 8.8 | Good |
| Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
| Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
| Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
To be fair, this isn’t a bad level of sinkage at all. But it is the weakest sex performance area for the mattress.
A more robust edge extends the usable surface area of the mattress. All factors considered the Avocado Organic Hybrid is an excellent performer for the dance without pants.
Pressure Relief Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has an excellent level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body.
The mattress is equipped with 2.75″ of comfort material, which is 1.52″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.27″, based on all of our tests to date.
Comfort Layer
2.75″
Support Layer
8.75″
During our tests, I was pleased with the 0.5” organic quilted cover, which creates an immediate softness when you first lie down.
The cover, when combined with the 2.25” latex layer, helps to create a more balanced body contouring hug and a less polarizing feel.

Many latex hybrids can create more of a floating feel where the body lies more “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress.
This mattress avoids that and as such is able to create better pressure relief. In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 1.01. Ideally, I want to see all PSI at 1.0 or lower. The Avocado just narrowly misses, but it’s essentially there.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Side Sleepers | 0.13 | 1.01 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Back Sleepers | 0.08 | 0.89 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Stomach Sleepers | 0.08 | 0.50 |
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be excellent.
Off-Gassing Test
The Avocado Organic Hybrid had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 17 days. This is 10.1 days longer than the average smell duration of 6.9 days.

Off-Gassing Period

Company
Avocado mattresses come with a 365-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping is free. Returns are $99.
| Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Returns | 40% | 7.0 | $99 |
| Trial Period | 30% | 10 | 365 nights |
| Warranty | 20% | 8.0 | 10 years |
| Shipping | 10% | 10 | $0 |
| Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing 101+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 172 nights, 193 nights less than Avocado offers.

The average warranty is 14 years, which is 4 years longer than Avocado’s 10-year warranty. And that’s if we exclude the 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
Overall, the warranty isn’t as impressive as I’d like to see, but the longer trial is certainly a nice asset.
In addition to being sold directly from Avocado, this mattress is also available from Costco. Costco’s incredible return policy means this mattress essentially has lifetime returns for free (as long as you buy from Costco and can get the mattress back to Costco for the return).
How firm is Avocado Organic Hybrid?
The Avocado Organic Hybrid comes in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, medium-firm.

This firmness is generally suitable for a wide range of sleeper preferences. It is firm enough to provide support, but also soft enough to offer a good amount of pressure relief.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Avocado Organic Hybrid is excellent. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with an 8.75″ support layer.
This is 0.85″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.9″, based on all of our tests to date.
| Support Factor | Data |
|---|---|
| Comfort Layer | 2.75″ |
| Support Layer | 8.75″ |
| Firmness | Medium-Firm |
| Body Contour | Balanced |
| Zoned Support | No |
| Reinforced Edge | Yes |
This mattress does not use zoned support. We have the same 14-gauge coils from head to foot. I’m pleased with the 14-gauge coil. Lower gauge coils are thicker, which improves durability. Ideally, I like to see 12-14 gauge coils.
However, the perimeter edge uses 16-gauge coils, which are thinner and narrower compared to the 14-gauge coils. In addition, this mattress has a medium-firm feel. Medium-firm is an ideal choice for most body types and sleeping positions. When considering material quality, I’m pleased with what I see.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
| Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
The latex looks and feels good both on the body and in-hand. My only complaint is that I wish we had a thicker comfort layer, which would have further improved pressure relief.
However, seemingly that limited comfort layer is a measure to help keep the price lower, so there is at least a justified reason for it.
Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the Avocado Organic Hybrid is excellent.

The Cover
The Avocado Organic Hybrid has a 0.5″ quilted cover with button-tufted accents and GOTS-certified wool and cotton. It has a decent amount of stretch to it and gives the mattress a quality feel.

The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is 2.75″ thick, including the quilted cover. Beneath the cover is a 2.25″ latex foam, which serves as the primary comfort material on the Avocado Organic Hybrid.

The Support Layer
The support layer is 8.75″ thick and made of coils and support foam.
Directly beneath the latex is an 8.0″ pocketed coil layer.

On the queen-sized mattress, the Avocado Organic Hybrid includes 776 coils. I will note here that this is substantially fewer coils than what you’ll find on the Avocado Green.
The Avocado Green has up to 1,438 coils (queen size). For further comparison, the Avocado Eco has 809 coils—fewer coils than the Avocado Green, but still more coils than the Organic Hybrid.
Product Evolution
The Avocado Organic Hybrid is Avocado’s Costco model.
We have tested the Avocado Green, Avocado Eco, and Avocado Luxury. The table below shows a quick comparison between these four Avocado models:
| Mattress Name | Performance | Price | Firmness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avocado Eco | 9.19 | $1,399 | Medium (5.5) |
| Avocado Green | 8.98 | Standard – $1,799 Pillow Top – $2,499 Box Top – $3,200 | Plush (4), Medium (5), Medium Firm (6.5) |
| Avocado Luxury | 8.77 | $4,639 | Extra Soft (3), Medium (5) |
| Avocado Organic Hybrid (Costco) | 8.42 | $1,699 | Medium-Firm (6) |
Looking at the full Avocado collection, you’d be better off opting for the Avocado Eco (for a slightly softer feel) or the standard Avocado Green (slightly firmer feel) if you want a better performing mattress around the same price (when buying directly from Avocado).
However, the price does get better if you buy from Costco, where it’s $1,399 for a Queen. Even so, this is the same price as the Avocado Eco for a mattress that is a substantially worse performer. As such, it’s a hard one to recommend highly.
