Our Verdict
The Avocado Green Pillow Top is a 13″ latex hybrid mattress made of latex foam and a pocketed coil support base. It has a pillow top design gives the Avocado Green a luxury feel and incredible pressure relief.
The Avocado Green is available in three firmness levels — soft, medium, and medium-firm. Each different firmness is offered at a different price point and has a dramatically different mattress thickness. We tested the Avocado Green Firm here.
The Medium version of the Avocado Green has a plush pillow top that the Firm version does not have. Given this thicker cover, this mattress has very deep sinkage and high levels of bounce.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.41, ranking the mattress in the bottom 31% of all mattresses tested to date.
The Avocado Green Pillow Top is $2,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 56% more expensive than the average latex hybrid and almost 2X the cost of the average mattress, considering all mattress types. If you opt for the Firm version of the Avocado Green, that price drops to $1,799, which is 3% less expensive than the average latex hybrid, but you’d also be getting a firmer mattress (6.5 out of 10 with a medium-firm feel).

How is Avocado Green Pillow Top Different?
The Avocado Green Pillow Top is a 13″ latex hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is slightly below average and a price that is more than the average price.
Typically, this isn’t the dynamic that we like to see, especially for sleepers looking for a good value for the money.
Advantages
Advantages of the Avocado Green Pillow top mattress include faster material responsiveness, better sex performance, and exceptional pressure relief. The mattress is 13″ thick, 0.8″ thicker than the average mattress.
Neutral Factors
The Avocado Green Pillow top mattress has very deep sinkage and high levels of bounce. If you want a natural mattress that allows you to sink in and engage more deeply with the materials, this could be the right feel for you.

Disadvantages
Besides the higher price, other disadvantages of the Avocado Green Pillow top mattress include worse cooling performance, higher levels of motion transfer, and strong smell.
Being a natural mattress, the smell isn’t offensive in the same way that a memory foam or poly foam mattress can be. Even so, it’s still a very strong odor for 3 weeks.
Cooling Test
The Avocado Green Pillow Top has good cooling. During our tests, I felt a slight level of heat retention around my body. Latex hybrids are typically great for cooling; even so, this mattress isn’t a cooling miracle worker.
Baseline Temp.
75.0° F
Max. Temp.
92.9° F
Ending Temp.
82.7° F
In my view, the cooling performance is negatively impacted by the pillow top cover. Said cover creates a very deep level of sinkage and there is more material that wraps up and around the body.
The deeper sinkage and more enveloping pillow top around the body limit breathability and therefore create more heat retention. The mattress benefits from the hybrid design, which brings more airflow in.
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In addition, the latex, cotton, and wool are all breathable materials that don’t retain excessive heat.
Even so, these beneficial material choices aren’t enough to overcome the limited breathability resulting from the deeper sinkage and enveloped pillow top feel.
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 92.9° F. This is 2.9° more than the average of 90.0° F, based on all of our tests to date.
After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 5.6 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.8 degrees cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is good.
Sinkage Test
The Avocado Green Pillow Top has very deep sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.65″. This is 0.44″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.21″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
2.65″
Sinkage Feel
Very Deep
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a balanced body contouring hug and a hug that is also more generalized around the body. The generalized body contouring hug is typical for latex hybrids.
In addition, the pillow top on this mattress feels loosely packed with material, which helps to further reinforce the more restrained hugging sensation.
Motion Transfer Test
The Avocado Green Pillow top has a high level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 12.22 m/s². This is 39% more motion transfer than the average of 8.79 m/s².
Accel. Range
12.22 m/s²
Motion Duration
1.18 seconds
Latex hybrids typically have more motion transfer than other mattress types and that’s exactly what we measured here.
The combination of high bounce, deeper sinkage, and highly responsive latex foams create the right material conditions to create more motion transfer.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.2 seconds. In addition, we recorded a secondary acceleration spike from 0.5 to 0.7 seconds, after which we see motion declining. By 1.18 seconds we’ve returned to near zero levels of energy, which is 0.30 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.88 seconds.
Motion Transfer Over Time

When we consider the high motion spikes, secondary spike, and longer-than-average motion duration, it’s clear that the Avocado Green Pillow top has a high level of motion transfer.
Response Test
The Avocado Green Pillow Top has an extremely fast material response. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.20 seconds faster than the average of 0.40 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Fully Recovered
0.3 sec.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.69 seconds faster than the average of 0.99 seconds.
This is effectively an instant material recovery and it’s tied for 1st with a number of other mattresses as the fastest responsive mattress we’ve tested to date.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
Latex and pocketed coils are incredibly springy, resilient, and responsive. These materials, both by themselves and individually, return to their original shapes incredibly quickly.
The other materials, namely cotton and wool, aren’t quite as quick. Nevertheless, the latex and coils are thick enough and responsive enough to effectively create instant recovery for the mattress as a whole.
Bounce Test
The Avocado Green Pillow Top has a high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 10.57″. This is 1.68″ more bounce than the average of 8.89″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
6.65″
Max. Rebound
3.92″
Total Bounce
10.57″
We typically see high bounce from latex hybrids and that’s exactly what we measured here as well.
Latex and pocketed coils individually create high resilience and high bounce, and together they are able to deliver an above-average level of bounce.
Notably, the bounce is slightly less than the non-pillow top version (you can find that review and test data here).
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The pillow top has a suppressive effect on the total bounce. Even so, total bounce is still higher than average.
The higher bounce is a major reason motion transfer is higher than average, but that higher bounce is also helping sex performance greatly.
Edge Support Test
The Avocado Green Pillow Top has good sitting edge support and good lying edge support.
Max. Sinkage
4.50″
Lying Support
Good
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.50″. This is 0.55″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 3.95″, based on all of our tests to date.
While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was good in all sleeping positions.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

The mattress is equipped with reinforced coils along the perimeter of the mattress.
Said coils are 16 gauge along the perimeter and use a narrower diameter compared to the coils in the middle, which have a larger diameter and are 15 gauge. Lower gauge coils are thicker than higher gauge and also are typically firmer.
The reinforced edge coils seem great, however, the material up top in the comfort layer is the problem.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The pillow top creates a very deep sinkage and the other comfort materials just don’t create much resistance between sleepers and the coil unit. This creates a weaker edge support for both sitting and lying.
To be fair, edge support isn’t bad, and yet, it absolutely has room for improvement. In my view, the weaker edge support is less of an issue with Avocado specifically, but rather with most mattresses equipped with this type of pillow top.
Sex Test
The Avocado Green Pillow Top has good sex performance. The mattress benefits tremendously from the above-average bounce height.
At 10.57” of bounce, the Avocado Green is a mattress that works with couples to create a more active and lively amorous surface.

In addition, noise is minimal and pressure relief is outstanding.
Moving on with the less-than-great scores, we have cooling and edge support. Cooling is good, but didn’t rise to the excellent or outstanding level. Likewise, edge support earned a good score, but it also has room for improvement.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 9.1 | Very High |
Edge Support | 20% | 8.1 | Good |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
With 4.50” of sitting edge sinkage, the edge may not feel supportive enough for some couples.
Pillow top mattresses and latex hybrids can often struggle more with edge support performance, which limits the usable surface area of the mattress for amorous activities.
Pressure Relief Test
The Avocado Green Pillow Top has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt zero pressure points on my body. The mattress creates an incredible level of comfort and alleviation of pressure points.
The mattress is equipped with 4.25″ of comfort material, which is 0.02″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.27″, based on all of our tests to date.
Comfort Layer
4.25″
Support Layer
8.75″
We have previously tested the firm version of the Avocado Green mattress.
In our tests of the standard Avocado Green the mattress had significant comfort and pressure relief problems, primarily due to the thinner-than-average 2.0” comfort layer.
The pillow top version creates significantly better pressure relief than the standard version of the mattress. In my view, much of that improved pressure relief can be attributed to the considerably thicker comfort layer. Beyond simply having more comfort material, the quality of said comfort material is impressive.

Avocado uses GOLS-certified organic latex in addition to wool and cotton that’s GOTS-certified.
In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.97. Ideally, I want to see PSI levels at or below 1.0 and we see that the Avocado clears that benchmark.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.15 | 0.97 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Back Sleepers | 0.08 | 0.54 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Stomach Sleepers | 0.10 | 0.70 |
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be outstanding.
Off-Gassing Test
The Avocado Green Pillow Top had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 21 days.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
21 days
This is 14.1 days longer than the average smell duration of 6.9 days.

Even after 21 days you can still smell a notable latex odor. The difference in smell between days 14 and 21 is fairly small. As such, I am doubtful the mattress will fully lose the strong latex smell.
In our tests of the Avocado Green Firm, without the pillow top layer, this odor dissipated significantly faster (within a single day).
My view is that the Pillow Top version simply has more latex than the standard Avocado Green and all of that extra latex brings with it a dramatic increase in smell duration.
Company
Avocado mattresses come with a 365-night trial period and a 25-year warranty. Shipping is free. Returns are $99.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Returns | 40% | 7.0 | $99 |
Trial Period | 30% | 10 | 365 nights |
Warranty | 20% | 10 | 25 years |
Shipping | 10% | 10 | $0 |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing 101+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 172 nights, 193 nights less than what Avocado offers.

This Avocado mattress is backed by a 25-year warranty, which is 12 years more average. However, this does exclude the 41% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
How firm is Avocado Green Pillow Top?
The Avocado Green mattress is available in three firmness levels—Plush, Medium, and Firm. We tested the Medium version (aka Pillow Top version) and found the firmness to be a 5 out of 10.

We have also previously tested the Firm version. We rated the Firm version to have a firmness of 6.5 out of 10, effectively giving it a medium-firm feel.

Based on these materials and overall mattress design, I would estimate the Plush version (aka Box Top) to have a firmness of 4 out of 10.

Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Avocado Green Pillow Top is outstanding. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with a 8.75″ support layer. This is 0.85″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.9″, based on all of our tests to date.
The mattress is equipped with up to 1,379 coils (King size) and provides zoned support. There are 7 zones in the mattress, including a reinforced edge and head / foot zone that use a narrow diameter, 16 gauge coil.
In addition, we have a center third zone that uses a 15 gauge coil (diameter not specified). And a zone between center and head / foot that uses a larger diameter, 14 gauge coil.
This zoned support is aimed at creating ideal support for each specific part of the body. Zoned coils also help to better resist sagging, especially in the middle of the mattress.

This mattress is available in 3 firmnesses: plush (box top), medium (pillow top), and firm (standard). For most sleepers, the medium version (aka pillow top) will be the most appropriate, as it creates better pressure relief and a support dynamic that works well for most body types and sleeping positions.
My only concern with respect to support is the very deep sinkage level created by the pillow top version. This sinkage is great for most side sleepers, but it can be more polarizing for some back sleepers and less ideal for stomach sleepers.
Please see our support tables below for specifics on which firmnesses are best for which body types and sleeping positions.
Plush Version
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Maybe | Yes | Maybe |
150-250 lbs. | No | Yes | No |
250-300 lbs. | No | Yes | No |
Medium Version

---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Maybe | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Maybe | Yes |

Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the Avocado Green Pillow Top to be outstanding.

The Cover
The Avocado Green Pillow Top has a plush pillow top design. At the very top is a 0.5″ thick wool cover. It has traditional tufted accents and a natural design.

The pillow top is made of 2.0″ natural Dunlop latex that is GOTS-certified. There is a wide gusset on the side of the mattress that allows for breathability and cooling of the layers within this top cover.

There are also handles on the sides of the mattress to make it easier to rotate or transport the mattress.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is 4.25″ thick, which includes the layers that make up the pillow top cover.

Below the 2.0″ latex foam, there is an additional 1.75″ latex foam. This latex helps to round out the comfort layer and ease sleepers into the support materials below.
The Support Layer
The support layer is 8.75″ thick and made of 8.0″ pocketed coils followed by a 0.75″ support layer of foam at the base of the mattress.

Product Evolution
The Avocado Green mattress came out when the brand launched in 2016. Originally, the mattress was soft with a standard quilted cover or a pillow top (for an additional $300).
Today’s version of the Avocado Green mattress has 3 dramatically different designs— Standard Top, Pillow top, and Box Top. These three firmnesses were updated in late 2023 to include the new Box Top option.
We tested this Pillow top mattress in 2025 and have noted no major design changes between the 2023 version and the current version.
