- Very fast material responsiveness
Considerations
- Extra firm feel produces higher levels of motion transfer
- Not enough pressure relief for most side sleepers
- Cooling is good, but not great
Our Verdict
The Avocado Extra Firm is a 10.00″ latex hybrid mattress with a thinner 1.0″ quilted cover, and layers that include latex foam, coconut fibers, and pocketed coils. There are two layers of coconut fibers, which are not layers typically found.
The Avocado Extra Firm is available in a single firmness level — extra firm. On our firmness scale, this is 9 out of 10 and on par with the firmest mattresses that I’ve tested to date. The coconut fibers play a large role in this firm feel. If you want maximum pushback and more natural materials, this Avocado checks a lot of boxes.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and very high levels of bounce. This feel allows the Avocado to earn a fantastic sex performance score (with very high bounce and 10/10 edge support).
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.62, ranking the mattress in the bottom 44% of all mattresses tested to date.
The Avocado Extra Firm is $2,079 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 4% more expensive than the average latex hybrid. While the performance isn’t incredible, it is on par with the best extra firm mattresses we’ve tested to date. If you want an extra firm feel with organic / natural materials it just doesn’t get any better than this.

How is Avocado Extra Firm Different?
The Avocado Extra Firm is a 10.00″ latex hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is better than average and a price that is only slightly more than the average.

Advantages
Advantages of the Avocado Extra Firm include a faster material response time, better edge support, and a higher sex performance score. This Avocado also off-gasses faster than average and is backed by a 365-night trial period (186 nights longer than average).
Neutral Factors
This mattress has moderate sinkage and very high bounce. Both of these factors are considered neutral since different sleepers will have different preferences in this area.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages to the Avocado Extra Firm include higher levels of motion transfer (a disadvantage for couples) and good, but not amazing cooling performance. The coconut fibers seem to be causing breathability issues, which isn’t doing this mattress any favors for cooling.
Cooling Test
The Avocado Extra Firm has good cooling. During our tests, I felt a slight level of heat retention around my body. Typically, latex hybrids perform well for cooling, but this mattress struggled a bit more.
Baseline Temp.
79.1° F
Max. Temp.
92.5° F
Ending Temp.
81.9° F
In my view, the unique design of this mattress seems to be creating breathability issues. Certainly, the hardness and denser feel is impacting breathability. In addition, this mattress uses two layers of coconut fiber pads.
While these fiber pads are incredibly rigid and supportive, they don’t appear to allow for as much airflow to pass through them, which will be a negative for cooling.
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 92.5° F. This is 2.5° more than the average of 90.0° F, based on all of our tests to date.
After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 6.5 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.7 degrees cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is good.
Sinkage Test
The Avocado Extra Firm has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.01″. This is 0.21″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.22″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
2.01″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
Body Contour
Slight
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates only a slight body hug and has a floating feel where you lie more “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress.
Since it has an extra firm feel it naturally creates an incredibly high level of pushback and support.
All that said, this mattress has a very specific feel. To be comfortable on this mattress, you will absolutely need to love and need that extra firm feel and extra support.
Motion Transfer Test
The Avocado Extra Firm has a moderate level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 10.26 m/s². This is 17% more motion transfer than the average of 8.77 m/s².
Accel. Range
10.26 m/s²
Motion Duration
2.06 seconds
Latex hybrid mattresses typically have more motion transfer. The same is true of extra firm mattresses, and that’s exactly what we measured here.
The high resiliency and significantly higher than average level of bounce mean there is simply more energy transferred into and across the mattress, which increases the motion transfer level.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.2 seconds. Motion declines thereafter, but we do see a significant secondary energy spike from 0.6 to 0.7 seconds.
Motion Transfer Over Time

By 2.06 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 1.17 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.88 seconds.
Both the motion intensity and motion duration are worse than average. As a result, it’s easier to feel motion transfer on this mattress.
Response Test
The Avocado Extra Firm has an extremely fast material response. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.21 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Fully Recovered
0.3 sec.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.72 seconds faster than the average of 1.02 seconds. This is effectively an instant material recovery speed and is tied for 1st with a number of other highly responsive mattresses.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
Latex, coils, and extra firm mattresses typically have a highly resilient and responsive material recovery and that’s exactly what we measured here with the Avocado Extra Firm.
The rapid response ensures you’ll never feel stuck on the mattress and it’s easy to move around on.
Bounce Test
The Avocado Extra Firm has a very high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 12.58″. This is 3.79″ more bounce than the average of 8.79″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
7.90″
Max. Rebound
4.68″
Total Bounce
12.58″
The same design and material factors that create super-fast responsiveness on the mattress are also driving significantly higher than average bounce. Latex and coils individually have higher bounce and when combined together, they really push it.
In addition, the extra firm feel means the body movement rebounds strongly and doesn’t sink very far into the mattress, further increasing the bounce.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
All of that extra bounce is great for ease of movement and sex. However, the higher bounce is also the reason that motion transfer is worse than average.
Edge Support Test
The Avocado Extra Firm has outstanding sitting edge support and outstanding lying edge support.
Max. Sinkage
2.00″
Lying Support
Outstanding
Reinforced Edge
Yes
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.00″. This is 1.94″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.94″, based on all of our tests to date.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was outstanding in all sleeping positions.
This mattress is incredibly firm and that extra firm feel extends all the way out to the edges, creating an incredible level of edge support for both sitting and lying. Notably, this mattress doesn’t contain reinforced edge coils or reinforced edge foam.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

However, it would feel completely unnecessary in this design. This mattress is so incredibly firm and supportive that it’s essentially built from 100% reinforced coils as is.
All that to say, this edge is incredibly supportive and rigid. I have nothing but good things to say about the edge support.
Sex Test
The Avocado Extra Firm has excellent sex performance. Let’s start off with the positives. This mattress creates minimal noise, has extremely high bounce, and outstanding edge support.

In our bounce tests, we measured a total bounce height of 12.58”, which is significantly more than the average of 8.79”.
All of that extra bounce makes the surface incredibly engaging and lively, which makes it less strenuous and less tiring to have sex on. In addition, we measured the sitting edge sinkage at 2.00”, which is also considerably better than average.
| Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounce | 65% | 10 | Extremely High |
| Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Outstanding |
| Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
| Pressure Relief | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
| Cooling | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
The more robust edge ensures the edge is a usable part of the mattress for amorous activities. Lastly, we have pressure relief and cooling, both of which earned good scores, but not great.
While cooling and pressure relief could have been better, bounce, noise, and edge support earned perfect 10 out of 10 scores. As a result, the Avocado Extra Firm earns one of the highest sex scores we’ve seen to date.
Pressure Relief Test
The Avocado Extra Firm has a good level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt a slight level of pressure on my body, especially on my back and shoulders.
The mattress is equipped with 3.0″ of comfort material, which is 1.29″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.29″, based on all of our tests to date.
Comfort Layer
3.00″
Support Layer
7.00″
Certainly pressure relief is not great on this mattress, but that’s also to be expected with a mattress with this level of firmness. Even so, is this a comfortable mattress? In my view, that really depends on the feel you want in the mattress.
For the sleeper who knows they need and want an extra firm feel with lots of pushback and support, this mattress is likely going to create the right pressure-relieving dynamic.
That sleeper is most likely an exclusive stomach or back sleeper. I don’t think a mattress at this firmness level is appropriate for most side sleepers.

My pressure relief assessment of this mattress is that it has a reasonable level of pressure relief within the context of the extra firm feel. If anything else, weight is evenly distributed well by the mattress.
When we look at our pressure mapping tests, it’s more than we’d like to see, but it’s nothing extreme.
In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.97. Ideally, I want to see all pressure maps at 1.0 or below and the Avocado Extra Firm hits that mark, just barely.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Side Sleepers | 0.16 | 0.91 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Back Sleepers | 0.11 | 0.97 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Stomach Sleepers | 0.10 | 0.83 |
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be good.
Off-Gassing Test
The Avocado Extra Firm had a strong smell upon the initial arrival. The mattress smelled for 6 days. This is 1.1 days shorter than the average smell duration of 7.1 days.

Company
Avocado mattresses come with a 365-night trial period and a 25-year warranty. Shipping is free. Returns are $99 if the mattress ends up not being the right pick for you.

| Trial Period | 30% | 10 | 365 nights |
| Warranty | 20% | 10 | 25 years |
| Shipping | 10% | 10 | $0 |
| Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing 103+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 176 nights. With a 365 night trial period the Avocado is considerably longer than average.

Avocado’s 25-year warranty is 11 years longer than average (average is only 14 years). Additionally, that is if we exclude the 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
How firm is Avocado Extra Firm?
The Avocado Extra Firm is exactly as firm as it sounds—Extra Firm. On our firmness scale, this mattress is a 9 out of 10. Among all mattresses tested, this is the firmest level we’ve tested to date.

You’ll need to really prefer a very firm feel in order to find this mattress comfortable.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Avocado Extra Firm is outstanding. During our tests, I felt well supported, especially on my back and stomach. However, support on my side wasn’t as ideal, primarily due to the extra firm feel.
| Support Factor | Data |
|---|---|
| Comfort Layer | 3.00″ |
| Support Layer | 7.00″ |
| Firmness | Extra Firm |
| Body Contour | Slight |
| Zoned Support | Yes |
| Reinforced Edge | Yes |
The mattress is equipped with a 7.0″ support layer. This is 0.92″ thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.92″, based on all of our tests to date.
The extra firm feel and material construction of this mattress ensure that support is incredible. However, it’s also a more polarizing type of support. The extra firm feel isn’t ideal for all sleepers.
In my view, this firmness is best suited for stomach and back sleepers, but not a good choice for side sleepers.
Side sleepers need a mattress with more sinkage and a medium-firm feel, so as to bring the hips in alignment with the rest of the body.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
| Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 150 lbs. | Yes | No | Yes |
| 150-250 lbs. | Yes | No | Yes |
| 250-300 lbs. | Yes | No | Yes |
If you don’t really prefer the extra firm feel, then the good, but not great, pressure relief could cause the mattress to simply be uncomfortable. All of that said, when it comes to actually providing support for the body, it just doesn’t get any better.
This is essentially perfect support. It is incredibly rigid and supportive with a ton of pushback and moderate sinkage (bordering on minimal).
Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find support on the Avocado Extra Firm is outstanding.

Materials
The Avocado Extra Firm is 10.00″ thick and contains a combination of different material types, prioritizing organic, natural materials. From top to bottom, here is a full list of the materials used in this mattress:
| Layer Type | Thickness | Layer Specs |

| Quilted Cover | 1.00″ | Not Available |
| Latex Foam | 2.00″ | 14-19 ILD |

| Coconut Fibers | 0.50″ | Not Available |
| Pocketed Coils | 3.00″ | 14 gauge |
The two separate layers of coconut fibers are a less common material choice, but they really help this mattress to have that firmer feel, in a natural way. The latex foam and pocketed coils are standard materials for latex hybrids.

The Cover
The Avocado Extra Firm has a 1.0″ quilted cover made of organic cotton. This cover is button-tufted and is designed to wick moisture away.

Below the organic cotton is a thin layer of organic wool that acts as an organic, natural fire barrier. Wool is antimicrobial and resistant to dust and other allergens.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is 3.00″ thick if we include the 1.0″ quilted cover. Directly below the cover is a 2.0″ organic Dunlop latex. This layer is GOLS-certified and serves as the primary comfort layer.

Below the layer is a 0.5″ transitional layer of coconut fibers, which creates a rigid layer between the coils and comfort materials.
The Support Layer
The support layer is 7.00″ thick and made of two layers of coconut fibers and two layers of pocketed coils. The fibers and coils alternate, giving the mattress an extra firm and rigid feel.

Product Evolution
Avocado has been around since 2016 and originally launched with their two flagship models—Avocado Green and Avocado Eco. While these two mattresses have undergone minimal design changes, the brand released two ultra-luxury models in 2025.
Avocado released three new models in 2025—the Avocado Luxury, Avocado Grand Luxe, and Avocado Extra Firm. Each of these mattresses was designed to meet the needs of a smaller group of sleepers that the other mattresses weren’t really covering.

The Luxury and Grand Luxe were designed as high-end options for sleepers wanting a more traditional pillowtop design with the most natural materials.
The Extra Firm was designed for back or stomach sleepers looking for an extra firm feel, previously unattainable with any Avocado mattress.
