Our Verdict
The Avocado Eco Kids is an 8.00″ kids mattress made of latex foam with a pocketed coil support base and a quilted cover. The organic latex is GOLS-certified, and it also contains GOTS-certified wool and cotton. This finished mattress is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified and also Greenguard Gold certified, which ensures low VOCs.
The Avocado Eco Kids is available in a single firmness level — slightly firm. On our scale, this is 7 out of 10 firmness where 10 is the most firm.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and very high levels of bounce. The moderate sinkage appeals to a wide variety of kids’ preferences and sleeping positions.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.75, ranking the mattress in the top 39% of all mattresses tested to date. That said, looking specifically at kid’s mattresses, the Avocado Eco Kids is among the top 1%.
The Avocado Eco Kids is $799 for a twin-sized mattress and is not available in Queen, King, or Cal. King. For $800, it offers fantastic performance for parents or caregivers who prioritize natural/organic materials for their children. As of publishing this review, it is the #1 best ranked kids mattress we’ve tested to date.

How is Avocado Eco Kids Different?
The Avocado Eco Kids is an 8.00″ kids mattress with an overall performance level that is above average and a price that is below the average price. One note, this mattress is only available in Twin and Full sizes.
Advantages
Specific advantages of the Avocado Eco Kids include better cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, faster material responsiveness, and fantastic edge support.
This edge support was impressive when sitting or lying at the edge of the mattress, which may be good news for co-sleeping parents or bedside stories.
Neutral Factors
The Avocado Eco Kids has a moderate level of sinkage and very high levels of bounce. For kids who enjoy an active feel, these factors will likely be neither pros nor cons.
Off-gassing is a bit of a neutral factor as well, given that the mattress takes 7 days to off-gas, which is tied with the average.

Disadvantages
The biggest disadvantage of the Eco Kids is below-average pressure relief, largely a result of the thinner overall profile (only 8.0″ thick) and only 2.0″ of comfort material.
For most kids, this won’t really be a guaranteed “disadvantage”, but for older kids or adults who co-sleep, this will likely be a problem.
Limited-sized availability could also be a disadvantage for sleepers who are looking for a Queen or King mattress.
Lastly, this mattress has a shorter trial period, only 100 nights and a 10-year warranty (the average is 13 years and 40% of mattresses offer lifetime warranties).
Cooling Test
The Avocado Eco Kids has excellent cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention on my body.
Baseline Temp.
75.9° F
Max. Temp.
91.1° F
Ending Temp.
79.9° F
This mattress uses a simple, but proven latex hybrid design. We have a 1.0” quilted cover, 1.0” latex foam layer, and 6.0” coil unit. The coil unit brings plenty of airflow into the mattress. In addition, the latex layer resists heat retention better than many other types of foam.
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
This simple combination of latex atop coils has consistently performed well across the 41 other latex hybrid mattresses we’ve tested.
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.1° F. This is 1.0° warmer than the average of 90.1° F, based on all of our tests to date. After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 5.9 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.1 degrees cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.
Sinkage Test
The Avocado Eco Kids has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.20″.
Sinkage Depth
2.20″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
Body Contour
Slight
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

This is 0.05″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.25″, based on all of our tests to date. The mattress creates only a slight level of body contouring hug.
Instead, we see the slightly firmer feel of the mattress creating more of a floating sensation where sleepers lie more “on” the mattress instead of sinking down “in” the mattress. In addition, this is a typical latex mattress feel, which delivers a more generalized body contouring hug and a more restrained hugging sensation.
The mattress does not wrap, contour, or envelop the body as many other foam mattresses will.
Motion Transfer Test
The Avocado Eco Kids has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 8.24 m/s². This is 7% less motion transfer than the average of 8.84 m/s².
Accel. Range
8.24 m/s²
Motion Duration
1.14 seconds
Typically, latex hybrid mattresses have a higher level of motion transfer. However, that’s not what we measured here. Seemingly, Avocado is using a more novel or specialized type of coil unit that’s able to isolate motion despite the very high levels of bounce.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
We saw a similar low motion transfer in the adult version of the Avocado Eco. In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.3 seconds. Motion remains fairly steady from 0.3 to 1.0 seconds.
Finally, by 1.14 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.25 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.89 seconds.
Motion Transfer Over Time

While the motion intensity is slightly below average, the motion duration is slightly worse than average. All that said, I’m not worried about motion at these levels and I expect most sleepers will be unaffected.
Response Test
The Avocado Eco Kids has an extremely fast material response.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Fully Recovered
0.3 sec.
In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.22 seconds faster than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date. In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.72 seconds faster than the average of 1.02 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
This is effectively an instant material recovery speed and is tied for 1st with a number of other mattresses as the fastest we’ve tested to date. The rapid responsiveness ensures you’ll never feel stuck on the mattress, and it’s incredibly easy to move around.
Bounce Test
The Avocado Eco Kids has a very high level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 13.06″. This is 4.36″ more bounce than the average of 8.70″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
5.27″
Max. Rebound
7.79″
Total Bounce
13.06″
Both latex and coils are highly responsive, springy, and resilient. This combination works together to deliver a significantly higher level of bounce than average.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
That extra bounce helps to make this mattress easier to move around, change positions, and get in/out of bed. And it can also serve as a fun bonus play space for kids.
Edge Support Test
The Avocado Eco Kids has outstanding sitting edge support and good lying edge support.
Max. Sinkage
2.50″
Lying Support
Good
Reinforced Edge
No
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.50″. This is 1.39″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.89″, based on all of our tests to date.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was good in all sleeping positions. Notably, this mattress does not contain any type of reinforced edge support.
While that choice is certainly part of the reason why lying edge support is good, but not great, it’s also that choice that helps to keep the price lower.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Ultimately, the combination of minimal sinkage and slightly firm feel helps to create a robust and supportive edge, despite the lack of reinforced edge support coils.
Pressure Relief Test
The Avocado Eco Kids has a good level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body. Even so, it’s clear that pressure relief is only good, but far from amazing.
Comfort Layer
2.00″
Support Layer
6.00″
While it is a perfectly acceptable performance level for kids, adults who co-sleep with their children and older kids will likely find it notably lacking. The mattress is equipped with 2.0″ of comfort material, which is 2.31″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.31″, based on all of our tests to date.

In all mattress tests, we make it a point to cut the mattress open to examine the material quality. Overall, I’m pleased with what I see. The wool, latex, and coil layers all look and feel high quality.
My only note is that I wish there were a thicker comfort layer. A 2.0” thick comfort layer is acceptable for younger kids. However, any adults co-sleeping and even older kids as they grow up will likely find it insufficient.
In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.99. This is right inside the maximum 1.0 PSI I want to see. Suffice to say, I wish we had seen better pressure-mapping performance and a thicker comfort layer.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Side Sleepers | 0.11 | 0.73 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Back Sleepers | 0.09 | 0.66 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Stomach Sleepers | 0.08 | 0.99 |
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be good.
Off-Gassing Test
The Avocado Eco Kids had a strong smell upon the initial unboxing. The mattress smelled for 7 days. This is 0.3 days shorter than the average smell duration of 7.3 days.
Initial Smell Strength

Company
Avocado mattresses come with a 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping is free. Returns are $99.
| Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Returns | 40% | 7.0 | $99 |
| Trial Period | 30% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
| Warranty | 20% | 8.0 | 10 years |
| Shipping | 10% | 10 | $0 |
| Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing 111+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 184 nights, 84 nights more than Avocado offers. The average warranty is 13 years, which is 3 years more than this mattress, and that’s if we exclude the 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.

How firm is Avocado Eco Kids?
The Avocado Eco Kids mattress is available in a single firmness, 7 out of 10, which gives the mattress a slightly firm feel.

This firmness has a bit more pushback than we typically see, as medium-firm mattresses are the most common firmness among adult mattresses we test. However, the slightly firm feel is a perfectly fine firmness for most kids.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Avocado Eco Kids is good. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with a 6.0″ support layer. This is 1.92″ thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.92″, based on all of our tests to date.
| Support Factor | Data |
|---|---|
| Comfort Layer | 2.00″ |
| Support Layer | 6.00″ |
| Firmness | Slightly Firm |
| Body Contour | Slight |
| Zoned Support | No |
| Reinforced Edge | No |
For a mattress to create ideal support, it needs to both sufficiently support the body and also provide sufficient comfort. The Avocado Eco Kids meets those requirements, but just barely.
The limited comfort layer thickness limits the pressure relief. For adults who are co-sleeping, this could be a problem. In addition, it can be a problem as kids get older, especially 12 and up. That said, for younger kids, I’m less concerned, as pressure relief isn’t usually as critical for younger children.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
| Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
This mattress has a slightly firm feel, which, again, is perfectly fine for younger children. However, given the thinner than average support layer, thinner than average support layer, and slightly firm feel, I would not recommend this mattress to sleepers over the age of 12.
For older kids, I would recommend going with the adult Avocado Eco. Lastly, this mattress is a latex hybrid. Latex creates a more polarizing feel. It’s unlike almost any other mattress type on the market, creating a more restrained, generalized hug and a more floating feel.

This isn’t good or bad, but it is a specific feel. You’ll want to make sure your child prefers this feel to ensure they find the mattress comfortable and supportive.
Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find support on the Avocado Eco Kids to be good.

Product Evolution
Avocado has been around since 2016, when they launched with the Avocado Green.
The Avocado Eco Organic kids mattress was introduced in August 2022 as part of Avocado’s lower-priced “Eco Organic” mattress line.
When it launched, Avocado released three models at the same time:
- Eco Organic (adult version)
- Eco Organic (kids version—this review)
- Eco Organic Crib Mattress (infant version)
Other Mattresses to Consider
Not sure if the Avocado Eco Kids is the right pick for you? Check out these three other top-rated kids’ mattresses for alternatives you may want to consider.
For Performance

Awara
11″ Latex Hybrid
The Awara is a low-profile latex hybrid mattress available in 1 firmness level—medium-firm. Although now specifically designed for kids, the Awara offers better performance at a slightly higher price than the Avocado Eco Kids mattress. If you want something that can last into the adult years, the Awara is a great pick.
For Flippable Design

Sleep EZ Roma
Medium + Slightly Firm
The Sleep EZ Roma is a 9″ latex foam mattress with a flippable design—medium on one side and slightly firm on the opposite side. Like the Avocado, it uses organic latex that is GOLS-certified. It is not GOTS-certified or GreenGuard Gold, but it is still an attractive option for sleepers looking for organic latex.
For Thinner Profile

Latex Mattress Factory Organic Latex Essential
6.5″ Thick Profile
The Latex Mattress Factory Organic Latex Essential is a 6.5″ latex foam mattress available in 1 firmness level—slightly firm. This mattress has the thinnest profile and the pressure relief score struggles a bit, but for kids, this likely won’t be as impactful as it would be for adults. Especially for bunk beds, the thinner profile of this mattress would be beneficial.
