Our Verdict
Octave is a Canadian mattress maker that specializes in all-foam mattresses. Each tier of their lineup represents another layer added to their design and a reasonable jump in price.
Across the three mattresses they offer, their firmness only ranges from medium (5) to medium-firm (6). These are suitable for a wide range of sleepers, but those looking for firm or soft mattresses will need to look elsewhere.
The trio of Octave mattresses has an average price of $1,199 for a queen-size mattress. This is well below the average mattress price of $1,490, but about average for foam models, based on the mattresses we’ve tested to date.
The Octave Vista is the lowest tier, at $899, and it is also their thinnest mattress (only 12″ thick). If you’re a lighter-weight sleeper and don’t have significant pressure relief needs, the Vista is a solid option and a great way to save some cash.
The Octave Mirage is the mid-tier option at 13″ thick and priced at $1,199. For the money, this is the Octave mattress with the best value. It managed a performance score nearly as high as the Horizon, which is $300 more expensive. It has minimal sinkage, making it best for back or stomach sleepers.
The Octave Horizon is the top-tier Octave at 14″ thick and with a $1,499 price tag. It has the highest performance score from our tests, but not by much. If you want the thickest model available, a softer feel, or a high-profile look, the Horizon is the right choice. This mattress would be best for side sleepers looking for exceptional pressure relief.

Octave Horizon

Type: Foam
Firmness: Medium (5)
The Octave Horizon is a 14″ foam mattress made up of a rare combination of foams, including memory foam, latex foam, poly foam, gel foam, and support foam. It has a medium feel with moderate sinkage and low bounce. Its 8.98 score puts it within the top 23% of all mattresses tested to date, and its $1,491 price is nearly tied with the average queen-size. It performed particularly well in pressure relief, making it a great option for sleepers of all sleeping positions and most body weights.

Firmness
Octave offers a narrow range of firmness options from medium (5) to medium-firm (6), where 10 is the most firm.
At this time, they do not offer any models with a soft or firm feel.
| Firmness | Rating | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| Octave Horizon | 5 | Medium |
| Octave Mirage | 6 | Medium-Firm |
| Octave Vista | 6 | Medium-Firm |
Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test
Let’s begin with a comparison of cooling performance. For all-foam mattresses, Octave does a great job when it comes to cooling. The three Octave models have an average cooling score of 8.7, with scores ranging between 8.0 and 9.0.
| Cooling Test | Score | Baseline | Max. Temp. | Ending Temp. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | 8.0 | 83.1° | 91.2° | 84.4° |
| Octave Mirage | 9.0 | 82.9° | 91.6° | 88.6° |
| Octave Horizon | 9.0 | 82.8° | 89.2° | 83.5° |
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.
Octave Vista
Octave Mirage
Octave Horizon
The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.
By this measure, the Octave Mirage and Octave Horizon are slightly better than average, while the Octave Vista performs slightly below average. The all-foam design certainly presents a challenge for each model when it comes to cooling.
The Vista has the advantage of less material for heat to build up into, but there is a lack of cooling features present in these other two models. For example, the latex foam in the Horizon and Mirage is much better at resisting heat compared to memory and poly foams.

Furthermore, the convolutions in the support foam layers create some open areas for air to flow through as opposed to the solid block used in the Vista. If you typically sleep hot or live in warm climates, your best bet is either the Octave Mirage or the Horizon models.
Sinkage Test
Sinkage preference is subjective, as different sleepers have different preferences in this area. Octave mattresses have a generally minimal sinkage compared to most mattresses we’ve reviewed.
The Vista, Mirage, and Horizon have an average sinkage depth of a range of 1.87″, with measurements ranging from Very Minimal to Moderate sinkage.
| Sinkage Test | Sinkage Feel | Sinkage Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | Very Minimal | 1.64″ |
| Octave Mirage | Minimal | 1.94″ |
| Octave Horizon | Moderate | 2.04″ |
The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images below.
Octave Vista

Octave Mirage

Octave Horizon

For reference, the average level of sinkage across all mattresses tested to date is 2.23″.
Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Octave Vista (1.64″), Octave Mirage (1.94″), and Octave Horizon (2.04″) would all be better for these positions.

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. The thicker material layers in the Mirage and Horizon have more potential, especially for heavier-weighted sleepers, to offer the right pushback and softness for side sleepers.
That being said, other brands offer sinkage measurements as deep as 4.13″. If you’re someone who loves the feel of being enveloped by their mattress, with a dramatic hug and contour, then you may want to look outside of Octave.
Motion Transfer Test
When it comes to motion transfer, we’re looking at the potential for movements to disturb sleepers for those sharing a bed. Octave mattresses are consistently average when it comes to motion transfer.
The Octave Vista, Mirage, and Horizon have an average motion transfer score of 8.2, with the scores ranging between 8.0 and 8.3.
| Motion Transfer Test | Score | Acc. Range |
|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | 8.3 | 8.78 m/s² |
| Octave Mirage | 8.0 | 9.39 m/s² |
| Octave Horizon | 8.2 | 9.00 m/s² |
The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.
Octave Vista
Octave Mirage
Octave Horizon
The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.
Therefore, the Vista is the only Octave mattress that technically performs above-average. However, they each perform generally at this level.
The all-foam design should give the Octave mattresses a benefit when it comes to dispersing or isolating energy. However, the latex foam in the two higher-tier models (Mirage + Horizon) could be why those have slightly higher motion transfer measurements.
It’s possible that their cover design is partially to blame as well. When covers are too tight, they can pull towards compressions in the foams, no matter if the foams themselves are great at absorbing energy.
The motion transfer levels aren’t excessively high, but if you’re sensitive to feeling movements while you sleep, Octave isn’t the brand to solve this problem. For most people, they should work fine.
Response Test
All three Octave mattresses have faster-than-average material response times, with response scores ranging from 9.0 to 9.7.
| Response Test | Score | Mostly Recovered | Completely Recovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | 9.0 | 0.3 seconds | 1.0 seconds |
| Octave Mirage | 9.0 | 0.3 seconds | 0.9 seconds |
| Octave Horizon | 9.7 | 0.2 seconds | 0.6 seconds |
The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
Octave Vista
Octave Mirage
Octave Horizon
The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8.
Despite Octave’s all-foam design that includes at least 2″ of memory foam in each model, Octave mattresses are more responsive than average.
The Octave Horizon is technically the fastest mattress in the brand. Possibly the latex foam layer below is having an impact, as latex is one of the fastest materials found in mattresses.

The memory foam used in these Octave mattresses is clearly of a more modern formulation. These modern foams attempt to be more responsive while maintaining the benefits of higher-density and sharper contouring hug around sleepers’ bodies.
This appears to be a success for the Octave mattresses. Based on our tests, sleepers shouldn’t feel that infamous “stuck” feeling that comes from traditional memory foams.
Bounce Test
All three Octave mattresses have low levels of bounce, notably less bounce than the average. The Octave Vista, Mirage, and Horizon have an average bounce height of 7.17″, with measurements from 6.66″ to 7.61″.
| Bounce Test | Bounce Feel | Bounce Height |
|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | Low | 7.26″ |
| Octave Mirage | Low | 7.61″ |
| Octave Horizon | Low | 6.66″ |
The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
Octave Vista
Octave Mirage
Octave Horizon
The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.75″. My ideal bounce range for general ease of movement is roughly between 8 – 12″.
None of the Octave mattresses clear this benchmark and will feel more difficult to move around on. While the foams may be more responsive than a traditional memory foam, there’s no making up for the lack of a coil unit.
Hybrid designs are popular for many reasons, but one of the major benefits is the added spring/bounce they create. The latex foam may have done more if it were in the topmost layer, but the memory foam on each of these models will have the largest influence. The result is significantly less bounce than average across the board.
Edge Support Test
When it comes to edge support, we measure the compression while sitting at the edge and assess the viability of lying on the side of the mattress in all three sleeping positions.
Octave mattresses have good to outstanding levels of edge support. The three models have an average edge support score of 8.9, with scores ranging from 8.5 to 9.5.
| Edge Support Test | Score | Sitting Sinkage | Lying Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | 9.5 | 2.75″ | Excellent |
| Octave Mirage | 8.5 | 3.00″ | Fair |
| Octave Horizon | 8.6 | 4.50″ | Excellent |
The level of edge support is documented in the images below.
Octave Vista

Octave Mirage

Octave Horizon

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7.
Octave, as a brand, averaged a slightly higher score than average. The least expensive Vista model had well-above-average edge support.
None of these models uses a special reinforced edge, where there is a separate, denser support foam around the perimeter of the mattress (typically 4″ deep). So we can see the models have gradually more sitting compression as their designs become thicker.

The Octave Mirage managed to have the worst lying edge support, to the point that sleepers will probably need to lie a few inches from the edge to feel sufficiently supported.
Robust lying edge support effectively lets you sleep all the way to the very edge of your mattress, increasing the usable sleepable surface. We see this on the Octave Vista and the Octave Horizon.
Sex Test
When it comes to sex performance, we use a weighted formula that includes 5 different performance factors. With this, Octave mattresses earned subpar scores for sex, averaging a 7.8 score across the brand.
| Sex Test | Sex Score | Bounce | Edge Support | Noise | Pressure Relief | Cooling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | 7.9 | 7.0 | 10 | 10 | 8.0 | 8.0 |
| Octave Mirage | 8.1 | 7.2 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 |
| Octave Horizon | 7.4 | 6.6 | 8.1 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 |
The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.
The Octave Mirage has the most bounce and also the best sitting edge support. These two factors alone determine 80% of the sex score and can make or break any of these mattresses in this category.
If you’re looking for the absolute best mattress for sex, the Octave Mirage is our top pick. However, none of the Octave mattresses will likely be a huge game-changer for intimacy in the bedroom.
Pressure Relief Test
When it comes to pressure relief, the more expensive Octave mattresses perform significantly better than the least expensive one.
| Pressure Relief Test | Score | Comfort Layer | Support Layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | 8.0 | 4.00″ | 8.00″ |
| Octave Mirage | 10 | 6.00″ | 7.00″ |
| Octave Horizon | 10 | 8.00″ | 6.00″ |
The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.
By this measure, the Vista once again performs a little below average. Given its lower price of $899 for a queen, this is not unexpected or unreasonable. The Octave Mirage is only $300 more (at $1,199), and it achieves a 10/10 score.
This is a significant jump in performance for not much more money, so the Mirage has the best value when it comes to Octave mattresses and pressure relief performance.
The materials included in each mattress are documented in the images below.
Octave Vista

Octave Mirage

Octave Horizon

Typically, pressure relief has a direct correlation with the depth of the comfort layer. A thicker comfort layer usually produces better pressure relief.
We certainly see this with the Octave mattresses. More than the quantity of material, the quality and variety of materials make a large impact. Each layer theoretically serves a distinct purpose when it comes to comfort, support, and the transition between the two.

The extra layer used in the Horizon isn’t needed for top-tier pressure relief, but this will have more of an impact on heavier sleepers.
Ultimately, the Octave mattresses are all good, but they become exceptional with the thicker models. If you’re looking for the best pressure relief available, go with the Octave Mirage or Horizon.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing is strong on all three Octave mattresses, lasting between 6 – 7 days.
| Off-Gassing Test | Score | Initial Smell | Smell Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Octave Vista | 8.1 | Strong | 7 days |
| Octave Mirage | 8.3 | Strong | 6 days |
| Octave Horizon | 8.3 | Strong | 6 days |
The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 7.13 days.
Again, the Octave mattresses are just about average – not amazing, but not unreasonable either. All-foam designs often create the longest-lasting or most intense smells.

So when it comes to off-gassing, sleepers shouldn’t worry about excessive smell durations from the Octave mattresses. However, there’s no mistaking the intense synthetic odor that comes with the initial unboxing.
Company
Finally, let’s talk about the broad company policies that may affect your choice of an Octave mattress.
Octave offers sleepers a 365-night trial period, a 15-year warranty, free shipping, and free returns.
These are extremely consumer-friendly terms, especially the full year they offer in their trial period.
