Our Verdict
In the comparison of Dreamcloud vs. Purple mattresses, Purple is generally the winner. Purple offers better cooling performance, a faster response time, improved sex, better pressure relief, and better edge support (excluding the original Purple).
That being the said, the average price of a Purple mattress is nearly 2X the average price of a DreamCloud mattress.
If you prefer the feel of memory foam and want to save a few bucks, the Dreamcloud hybrids may be the better option for you. They have more hug and contour as well as slower response time and less bounce.
Each mattress in this comparison offers its own appeal to a certain type of sleepers.

Which Mattresses Are We Comparing?
DreamCloud offers only three mattresses, all of which are hybrids.
- DreamCloud Original (DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid)
- DreamCloud Premier
- DreamCloud Premier Rest
Purple manufactures a mix of foam and hybrid options, all of which have their patented Purple gel pad. In this comparison, we’ll be looking at the following models:
The Purple Original is a foam + Purple gel pad mattress and the Restore mattresses are both hybrids.
Lower-scoring mattresses including the Purple Plus, Purple Restore, and Purple Newday were excluded based on their lower overall performance scores.
The table below shows the data we generated to determine these scores.

Cooling Test
Comparing Dreamcloud and Purple, Purple has better cooling performance, with a cooling average of 9.00. Dreamcloud has an average cooling score of 7.33.
Cooling Test | Score | Baseline | Max Temp | Ending Temp |
---|---|---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | 8.0 | 79.7° | 89.5° | 82.0° |
Dreamcloud Premier | 7.0 | 78.5° | 92.0° | 83.9° |
Dreamcloud Premier Rest | 7.0 | 79.4° | 91.7° | 84.5° |
Purple | 10 | 79.7° | 89.2° | 84.0° |
Purple Restore Plus | 9.0 | 81.7° | 91.7° | 84.7° |
Purple Restore Premier | 9.0 | 83.0° | 91.3° | 86.2° |
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
As you can see in the table above, Purple has a much better cooling performance than Dreamcloud. A lot of this comes down to the materials that each mattress uses.
Dreamcloud uses a mix of poly foams and memory foam on all of its mattresses.
All Purple mattresses have the patented Purple hyper-elastic polymer grid. The material is stretchy, has an open grid design for improved airflow, and doesn’t retain heat.
This makes the Purple mattresses incredibly cool and great for sleepers who are concerned about heat retention.
Purple Original
DreamCloud Original
Purple Restore Plus
DreamCloud Premier
Purple Restore Premier
DreamCloud Premier Rest
Purple material limits heat retention by allowing body heat to be released through the mattress instead of collecting in one spot. This is even more true on the Purple Hybrids, which combine the Purple grid with pocketed support coils below.
For comparison, the Dreamcloud mattresses have thicker layers of foam above their coils. These foam layers don’t breathe as well and retain more heat, resulting in a worse cooling experience.
Sinkage Test
Sinkage is a testing category that has a very wide range of performance between the Dreamcloud and Purple mattresses. DreamCloud offers mattresses with minimal, moderate, or extremely deep sinkage—a sinkage range of 1.08″.
By comparison, Purple mattresses have minimal or moderate sinkage, with a range of 0.42″.
Sinkage Test | Sinkage Feel | Sinkage Depth |
---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | Extremely Deep | 3.02″ |
Dreamcloud Premier | Minimal | 1.94″ |
Dreamcloud Premier Rest | Moderate | 2.18″ |
Purple | Moderate | 2.24″ |
Purple Restore Plus | Minimal | 1.99″ |
Purple Restore Premier | Minimal | 1.82″ |
The average level of sinkage across all mattresses tested to date is 2.17″.
If you’re looking for an extreme (deep or minimal sinkage), DreamCloud is likely the better pick, but for a balanced level of sinkage, Purple is a good option too.
Images below show the level of sinkage for each mattress.
Purple Original

DreamCloud Original

DreamCloud Premier Rest

The DreamCloud Premier, Purple Restore Plus, and Purple Restore Premier all have less sinkage than average.
The DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid, DreamCloud Premier Rest, and Purple Original all have more sinkage than average (although the Purple Original has only 0.1″ more than average).
Motion Transfer
On average, DreamCloud has lower motion transfer levels than Purple, excluding the Purple Original which had the lowest levels of motion transfer among all mattresses.
Motion Transfer Test | Score | Acc. Range |
---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | 9.7 | 5.60 m/s² |
Dreamcloud Premier | 9.7 | 5.67 m/s² |
Dreamcloud Premier Rest | 10 | 2.62 m/s² |
Purple | 10 | 2.23 m/s² |
Purple Restore Plus | 7.2 | 11.27 m/s² |
Purple Restore Premier | 6.7 | 12.36 m/s² |
Based on all of our mattress tests to date, the average amount of motion transfer is 8.49 m/s². That puts every mattress here at lower levels than average except for the Purple Restore Plus and Purple Restore Premier Hybrid.
For exceptionally low levels of motion transfer, opt for the Dreamcloud Premier Rest or the Purple Original mattress. Both of these mattresses had less than half compared to the average.
The level of motion transfer is documented in the videos below.

Edge Support Test
The average edge support score for DreamCloud is 7.97 and the Purple average is 8.05—very close scores.
That being said, Purple is the only one that has a score with a perfect 10 (the Purple Restore Plus).
Edge Support Test | Score | Sitting Sinkage | Lying Support |
---|---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | 8.3 | 5.00″ | Excellent |
Dreamcloud Premier | 9.1 | 3.75″ | Excellent |

Purple | 5.1 | 7.75″ | Mediocre |
Purple Restore Plus | 10 | 2.75″ | Outstanding |
Purple Restore Premier | 9.9 | 3.25″ | Outstanding |
For some context, the average level of sinkage when sitting right at the edge of the mattress is 4.10″.
Purple Original

DreamCloud Original

Purple Restore Plus

DreamCloud Premier

Purple Restore Premier

DreamCloud Premier Rest

The Dreamcloud Premier, Purple Restore Plus, and Purple Restore Premier all have better edge support than average. Both of these mattresses offer between 2.75 – 3.75″ of sinkage and they also have excellent support while lying directly on the edge.
The Dreamcloud Luxury Hybrid (original) and Dreamcloud Premier Rest have more edge sinkage than average, between 5 – 5.75″, but they still maintain excellent lying support.
The Purple Original mattress has the worst edge support, with 7.75″ of sinkage. The deeper level of sinkage also makes for notably worse support while lying directly on the edge.
Sex Test
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score and from these factors, we can generate a sex score for each mattress.
The table below shows how sex performance varies between Purple and DreamCloud mattresses.
Sex Test | Sex Score | Bounce | Edge Support | Noise | Pressure Relief | Cooling |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | 9.0 | 9.5 | 7.5 | 10 | 8.0 | 8.0 |
Dreamcloud Premier | 9.2 | 9.4 | 9.1 | 10 | 8.0 | 7.0 |
Dreamcloud Premier Rest | 7.4 | 7.4 | 6.9 | 10 | 8.0 | 7.0 |
Purple | 8.8 | 10 | 4.1 | 10 | 9.0 | 10 |
Purple Restore Plus | 9.9 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
Purple Restore Premier | 8.8 | 8.4 | 9.7 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
Sex performance is good on both DreamCloud and Purple mattresses, with Purple having just a slightly higher score on average (8.53 on DreamCloud, 9.22 on Purple).
The mattresses with the best sex performance include the Dreamcloud Premier (9.2) and the Purple Restore Plus (9.9) These mattresses have great bounce, excellent edge support, minimal noise, and good pressure relief.
Mattresses with the lowest sex score in this comparison include the Dreamcloud Premier Rest (7.4), the Original Purple (8.8), and the Purple Restore Premier (8.8). Worse cooling and edge support on the Premier Rest are the main factors in this lower score. On the Purple, it was primarily the poor edge support that carried the score down.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on Purple mattresses is a bit better than we saw from DreamCloud, but both brands were acceptable. I typically like to see at least 3.0″ of comfort material, which all of these mattresses have.
Pressure Relief Test | Score | Comfort Layer | Support Layer |
---|---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | 8.0 | 5.5″ | 8.5″ |
Dreamcloud Premier | 8.0 | 5.5″ | 8.5″ |
Dreamcloud Premier Rest | 8.0 | 6.5″ | 9.5″ |
Purple | 9.0 | 5.5″ | 4.0″ |
Purple Restore Plus | 9.0 | 5.0″ | 8.0″ |
Purple Restore Premier | 9.0 | 3.0″ | 10.0″ |
Purple was consistently earning 9.0 scores while the Dreamcloud mattresses were all at 8.0. Despite having thicker comfort layers, Dreamcloud just doesn’t have the same pressure relief as Purple, in my opinion.
The material quality, especially the foams, on DreamCloud’s mattresses really lag behind. They are surprisingly hard, slower to respond, and just don’t create the same type of pressure-relieving hug and contour we’ve experienced with other memory foam mattresses. Nectar’s mattresses in particular (DreamCloud’s sister brand) are notably better when it comes to pressure relief, in my view.
Off-Gassing Test
The off-gassing was very minor on the Dreamcloud mattresses and pretty strong on the Purple mattresses. Based on all of our mattress tests to date, the average time it takes a mattress to off-gas is around 5.02 days.
Off-Gassing Test | Score | Initial Smell | Smell Duration |
---|---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | 9.7 | Minimal | 1 day |
Dreamcloud Premier | 9.7 | Minimal | 1 day |
Dreamcloud Premier Rest | 9.7 | Minimal | 1 day |
Purple | 8.9 | Strong | 4 days |
Purple Restore Plus | 7.2 | Strong | 10 days |
Purple Restore Premier | 2.8 | Strong | 26 days |
Dreamcloud off-gasses faster than average and the Purple mattresses off-gas slower than usual.
To help a mattress off-gas quicker, always put it in a well-ventilated room and leave bedding off until you’re ready to use the mattress.
Once a mattress has fully off-gassed, you should not notice any strong smells or material odors.
Company
Looking at company policies, Dreamcloud takes the win here over Purple.
Company | Dreamcloud | Purple |
---|---|---|
Score | 9 | 8.5 |
Trial Period | 365 nights | 100 nights |
Warranty | Lifetime | 10 years |
Shipping | $0 | $0 |
Returns | $0 | $0 |
Trust | Good | Good |
Country of Origin | USA | USA |
Dreamcloud offers a 365-night trial period with a lifetime warranty and free shipping or returns.
By comparison, the Purple trial is only 100 nights long with a limited 10-year warranty. They also offer free shipping and returns.
Both companies manufacture mattresses within the US. However, DreamCloud does source many of its materials overseas.
Firmness
All of the mattresses between Dreamcloud and Purple have a medium, medium-firm, or slightly firm. The one exception to this is the Purple Restore Premier which is also available in a soft version.
Firmness | Rating | Feel |
---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | 7 | Slightly Firm |
Dreamcloud Premier | 7 | Slightly Firm |
Dreamcloud Premier Rest | 6 | Medium-Firm |
Purple | 5 | Medium |
Purple Flex | 6.5 | Medium-Firm |
Purple Plus | 6 | Medium-Firm |
Purple Restore | 5, 7 | Medium, Slightly Firm |
Purple Restore Plus | 5, 7 | Medium, Slightly Firm |
Purple Restore Premier | 4, 6 | Soft, Medium-Firm |
Not sure which firmness is right for you? Use the table below to find the best range, based on sleeping position and body weight.

Support & Sleeping Positions
It’s important to know your ideal firmness prior to purchasing a new mattress.
All of the DreamCloud mattresses in this comparison are between 5 and 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness is suitable for a wide range of sleepers, especially heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach.
Purple mattresses have a slightly wider firmness range of 4-7, which helps to capture some lightweight side sleepers who may find mattresses 5 or firmer just have too much pushback.
Design
All of the mattresses listed in this comparison are hybrids in that they use a blend of foams and other materials.
Design | Type | Mattress Thickness |
---|---|---|
Dreamcloud | Hybrid | 14.0″ |
Dreamcloud Premier | Hybrid | 14.0″ |
Dreamcloud Premier Rest | Hybrid | 16.0″ |
Purple | Specialty | 9.5″ |
Purple Restore Plus | Specialty | 13.0″ |
Purple Restore Premier | Specialty | 13.0″ |
Dreamcloud mattresses are true hybrids because they combine foam and coils.
Purple is a specialty hybrid since they use foam, pocketed coils, and their patented Purple gel pad.
