The Verdict

Casper and Saatva are two of the biggest and oldest names in the direct-to-consumer mattress industry. Casper has cultivated an image around providing exceptional value with a range of affordable mattresses, and they specialize in all-foam and hybrid models.

Saatva has aimed to be known as “affordable luxury,” to appeal to sleepers with a relatively higher budget. They offer thick, complex designs including traditional coil, hybrid, latex hybrid, memory foam, memory foam hybrid, and a plus-sized option. They even throw in free white-glove delivery.

Saatva offers a wider range of firmness options with models ranging from soft (4) to firm (8). Their Solaire mattress can go from soft to firm with a remote control. Casper mattresses range from Soft (4.5) to Medium-Firm (6.5), so they may not attract sleepers looking for extra soft or any sort of firm feel.

While both brands will boast about incredible value and savings compared to more traditional mattress brands, Casper is the far more affordable brand. The average price of a queen Casper model is only $1,283 with options as low as $549 (Casper Cooling Select) and as high as $2,395 (Casper Dream Max). On the other hand, Saatva has an average mattress cost of $2,784, with the low being $1,699 (Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid) and the high being $4,599 (Saatva Solaire).

At the end of the day, these two brands offer two distinctly different advantages; Casper has a lower price tag, but Saatva makes the higher-performing mattress by far. Their average performance is 9.30 compared to Casper’s 8.34. If performance is key, then Saatva will be the better option, while also spanning a wider range of mattress types, compared to Casper.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Between Casper and Saatva, the two top recommendations are Casper Dream and Saatva Classic.

The Casper Dream is an 11.5″ hybrid mattress with poly foam, memory foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It has a medium-firm feel with minimal sinkage and high bounce. It has near-average performance and is priced just slightly beyond average for a queen mattress. This mattress has great cooling, fast material response time, and is great for sex. Its medium-firm feel makes this mattress comfortable for sleepers of all sleeping positions and most body weights.

The Saatva Classic is the #2 best mattress we’ve tested to date and is available in three firmness levels—Soft, Medium-Firm, and Firm. This high quality and variety of firmnesses make the Saatva an attractive option for a wide range of sleepers.

Read Review

The best mattress from each brand includes the Casper Dream and Saatva Classic, but these mattresses have considerable differences.

Casper Dream is a hybrid, while the Saatva Classic is a coil-on-coil mattress. Saatva also generates a higher overall performance and has a slightly higher price tag as well.

Considering mattress feel, the Dream has minimal sinkage, high bounce, and a medium-firm firmness (6 out of 10). With an overall performance score of 8.63, the Casper Dream scores in the top 50% of all mattresses tested to date.

On the other hand, we have the Saatva Classic. This mattress has an overall score of 9.74, ranking in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date. It has deep sinkage, extremely high bounce, and 10/10 scores for great cooling, strong edge support, exceptional pressure relief, and fast off-gassing.

Just looking at performance, the Saatva Classic will be the better mattress for most sleepers, but opting for the Casper Dream can save you around $300.

Before we get into the gritty details, let’s honor some specific mattresses first. The mattresses featured below performed exceptionally well when considering each individual category listed

For side sleepers, our top recommendation would be the Casper Dream Max or Saatva Classic. Side sleepers benefit from mattresses with thicker comfort layers and excellent pressure relief. The Saatva earns a perfect 10/10 for pressure relief and the Casper Dream Max earns a 9/10.

The Casper Dream Max is a 13.5″ hybrid mattress with a Soft feel (4.5 out of 10). It has deep sinkage and very high bounce. This mattress is also a good bit more expensive than the Saatva ($2,495 for Casper vs. $1,799 for Saatva).

Meanwhile, the Saatva Classic is a coil-on-coil mattress that is 11.5″ thick or 14.5″ thick. It has deep sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. Saatva comes in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8). For side sleepers, I would recommend the Soft or Medium-Firm.

If you typically sleep on your back or stomach, you’ll want to opt for something with less sinkage. I’d recommend the Casper Dream and Saatva Latex Hybrid.

Both of these picks have a medium-firm feel, with minimal sinkage and high bounce. But they also have distinctly different feels.

The Casper Dream is a standard hybrid mattress with excellent cooling, fast material responsiveness, and good sex performance. It also has a significantly lower price ($1,420 for Casper vs. $2,199 for Saatva).

The Saatva Latex Hybrid has a natural latex comfort layer, which gives the mattress a more generalized contour compared to the Casper. This mattress has fantastic performance, scoring in the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date. The Saatva earns perfect 10/10 scores for low motion transfer, fast responsiveness, great edge support, and fast off-gassing.

For heavier-weighted sleepers, I’d recommend the Casper Dream or the Saatva HD. I will say, among these two, the Casper Dream is not specifically designed for heavier sleepers, but the Saatva HD is. Casper does not have any model specifically designed for heavier weighted sleepers.

The Saatva HD has a higher overall performance score (9.28) over the Casper Dream (8.63). It is also significantly more expensive ($3,099 for a queen), but you’re getting a mattress that is better designed to support heavier bodies.

The Casper Dream is 11.5″ thick, whereas the Saatva HD is 15.5″. Saatva offers a thicker comfort layer and 10/10 performance for edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, and off-gassing.

The Casper can be advantageous for sleepers looking for support on a budget (only $1,420 for a queen). The performance is certainly lower than the HD, but does offer good cooling, fast material responsiveness, and good sex performance.

If cooling is a top priority for you, my top recommendations would be the Casper Snow and Saatva Classic. Both of these mattresses earned a 10/10 for exceptional cooling performance.

The Casper is a hybrid mattress and the Saatva is a coil-on-coil, each taking a different approach but generating fantastic cooling performance.

The Casper Snow is an 11.5″ hybrid with a medium firmness (5). It has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. Specifically for cooling, the Casper Snow has a phase-change infused cover, cooling “bands”, and a spray-on phase-change foam treatment. Each of these features contributes to the cool feel of this mattress.

The Saatva Classic has two layers of coils for maximum breathability and airflow. It also has deep sinkage and extremely high bounce. This mattress is active and engaging, while earning perfect 10/10 scores for cooling, edge support, pressure relief, and off-gassing.

For sleepers on a tight budget, I’d recommend the Casper One and Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid. Among these two picks, the Casper One certainly has the more budget-friendly price—only $799 for a queen mattress.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is over twice the price (though it’s still the least expensive option from Saatva), but it also has significantly better overall performance. The Casper One ranks in the bottom 13% of all mattresses tested, whereas the Casper Memory Foam falls within the top 10% of mattresses.

They both have minimal sinkage and a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10). The Casper has moderate bounce and the Saatva has extremely high levels of bounce.

If you struggle with back pain, my top picks would be the Casper Dream and Saatva RX. The Saatva will undoubtedly provide better performance, but if you’re looking for a value option, the Casper Dream comes in at less than half the price of the RX.

The Casper Dream is an 11.5″ hybrid with minimal sinkage, high bounce, and a medium-firm feel (6). It has a pressure relief score of 8 out of 10 with 3.0″ of comfort material above the support layer.

The Saatva RX, on the other hand, is a 15″ hybrid with moderate sinkage and high bounce. This mattress also has a medium-firm feel (6), like Casper Dream, but it has significantly better pressure relief. In our tests, the RX earned a 10/10 for pressure relief, backed by a 6.0″ comfort layer, twice as thick as the Dream. Of course, the price is significantly higher as well—over 2X the cost of Casper.

For couples looking for a mattress that enhances sex performance, I’d recommend the Casper Dream Max and Saatva Classic.

In our performance tests, the Casper earned a sex score of 9.7 and the Saatva Classic had a sex score of 9.9. Both mattresses were exceptional in this category.

For the best sex performance, we’re looking for high bounce, supportive edge, good cooling, good pressure relief, and minimal noise.

The Casper Dream Max has a soft feel (4.5), with deep sinkage, very high bounce, and good edge support. In comparison, the Saatva Classic is available in three firmness levels—Soft, Medium-Firm, or Firm. Saatva has deep sinkage, extremely high bounce, and exceptional edge support.

If you’re looking for a mattress with a soft feel, I’d recommend the Casper Dream Max or the soft version of the Saatva Classic.

The Casper Dream Max has a soft feel (4.5 out of 10 firmness) with deep sinkage and very high bounce. In comparison, the Saatva Classic also has deep sinkage and a soft feel (4 out of 10 firmness).

The Saatva has a bit more bounce and outperforms Casper in the following categories: cooling, motion transfer, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company score.

As an added advantage, the Saatva also has a lower price—$1,799 compared to $2,395 for the Casper Dream Max. For the better value, Saatva takes the win.

If you’re looking for the highest-performing mattress with a medium-firm feel, I would opt for the Casper Dream and Saatva Classic.

Between these two, the Saatva is the better performer (9.74 on Saatva vs. 8.63 on the Casper), but the Saatva is a little more expensive ($1795 on Saatva vs. $1,420 on Casper).

The Casper Dream has minimal sinkage and high bounce. Meanwhile, the Saatva Classic Sapira has deep sinkage and extremely high bounce. Depending on what you’re looking for specifically, either mattress could be a good pick.

The Saatva Classic (firm version), rated an 8 out of 10 firmness, is the best firm mattress in this comparison. Unfortunately, Casper does not have any mattress within their lineup that has a firm feel.

Firmness

Looking at all available mattresses we’ve tested, Casper ranges in firmness from 4.5 to 6.5 out of 10 and Saatva mattresses range from 4 to 8 out of 10.

Of the two brands, Saatva has the widest range of firmness options by a wide margin. If you’re looking for a firm mattress, especially, Saatva will be the better option. The Solarire, in particular, is an adjustable firmness mattress that gives sleepers the ability to change its firmness from 4-8 in real-time.

However, Casper’s 4.5 to 6.5 range, while narrow, will be suitable for the vast majority of sleepers.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test

Both Casper and Saatva have excellent cooling performance in this 3 vs. 3 comparison. However, Saatva comes out the winner with the higher average of 9.3 compared to Nectar’s 9.0.

Saatva RX

The average cooling score when considering all 340+ mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

Saatva’s 3 popular models all scored a 9.0 or higher, and the Saatva Classic scored a perfect 10. From Casper, the Snow Hybrid also scored a perfect 10.

The Casper Dream, Saatva RX, and Saatva Latex Hybrid all beat the average, while the Casper One underperformed by a small margin. Though the Casper One is the brand’s budget-friendly model (all-foam construction) with a price tag far lower than each of the Saatva models.

In the end, both brands know how to achieve top-tier cooling performance. As a more luxury mattress brand, Saatva will more consistently offer it across its product line.

Sinkage Test

When it comes to the type of sinkage feel from Casper and Saatva, both brand offers a similar range, but Saatva has a bit more variety.

Among the 3 popular mattresses we’re focusing on, the Casper Dream and Casper One both offer a minimal level of sinkage, and the Casper Snow offers a deep sinkage feel. So they have both ends of the spectrum covered.

Saatva’s popular models, on the other hand, include a minimal, moderate, and deep sinkage option. Again, their lineup shows a bit more variety in regard to firmness and now sinkage.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sinkage.

Saatva RX

Saatva RX Sinkage Test

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.18″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Casper Dream (1.89″ sinkage compression at $1,420, the Casper One (1.77″ at $799), the Saatva Latex Hybrid (1.85″ at $2,199), and the Saatva RX (2.05″ at $3,399) all have less sinkage than average.

Generally, side sleepers benefit from a deeper level of sinkage as that typically translates to better pressure relief and a higher degree of contouring hug. For deeper sinkage, both the Casper Snow (2.36″ at $1,870) and Saatva Classic (2.40″ at $1,799) are fantastic options.

Are you over 300 lbs.? Heavier sleepers generally need a mattress with a firmer feel to maintain optimal support. The Saatva Latex Hybrid is the best among this 3v3 comparison of popular mattresses to offer minimal to moderate sinkage and a slightly firmer feel. However, Saatva’s HD model is the one best designed for heavier sleepers overall.

Motion Transfer Test

When it comes to motion transfer, Saatva has a pretty big advantage over Casper. The 3 Saatva models average a much lower acceleration range (6.58 m/s²), representing motion transfer, compared to Casper (8.95 m/s²).

Ultimately, Saatva has the best-performing mattress in terms of motion transfer.

Casper Dream

Saatva Classic

Casper One

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Casper Snow

Saatva RX

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.3. It’s a performance category that a lot of mattresses tend to struggle with.

Their Saatva Latex Hybrid earned a perfect 10/10 with an acceleration range of only 3.13 m/s². The combination of quilted cover, latex foam material, and hybrid design creates a potent combination of diffusing motion from one side of the mattress to the other.

The Saatva Classic is still fantastic, with a 9.6 score that beats the average by a wide margin.

The Casper Snow is the only Casper model to beat this 8.3 average. The Casper Dream, Casper One, and Saatva RX all struggle a bit worse than average, with the latter being the worst of the 3.

In the end, Saatva comes out on top, but the popular Casper models are not necessarily poor performers in regards to motion transfer.

Response Test

For response time, both Casper and Saatva have extremely fast performance overall, with one exception. This exception is the Casper Snow, and it absolutely tanks their average within this 3v3 comparison.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.

For reference, the average response score is 8.8.

Dense memory foam is traditionally very slow to reform back to shape. It’s one of the material’s drawbacks, and it’s what we see on the Casper Snow.

From the models that perform extremely well in this category, like the Casper Dream, Casper One, and the Saatva Latex Hybrid, we see materials like poly foam and latex foam being used in the topmost layers of their design. The memory foam we do see in the Casper models is not incredibly dense, which aids in its speedy response.

Saatva Solaire Latex Foam
Saatva Solaire Latex Foam

As a material, latex foam can be dense while also being lightning-fast to reform back to shape. This is a big part of what gives the Saatva Latex Hybrid the best response score at a 10/10.

The Saatva RX is another example of how a blend of materials can include memory foam while being balanced out by poly foam and a microcoil layer to achieve a fast response.

In the end, both Casper and Saatva show they can make a fast-responding mattress.

Bounce Test

When it comes to bounce, Saatva comes out on top once again.

Mattresses with more bounce tend to be better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

The 3 popular Casper models all have moderate to high bounce, but Saatva’s models have high or extremely high bounce.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.

Casper Snow

Saatva RX

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 9.14″, and my personal ideal range is between 8″-12″. By these benchmarks, 5 of the 6 models being compared are within my ideal range, and only the Casper One has below-average bounce.

The Casper Dream, Casper Snow, Saatva Classic, Saatva RX, and Saatva Latex Hybrid all have above-average bounce.

Looking at their designs, 2 of the 3 popular Casper models use a foam base compared to an innerspring coil unit. Even the coil unit on the Casper Snow is much smaller than all of the Saatva mattresses.

Furthermore, materials like microcoils in the comfort layer on the Saatva RX and latex foam on the Saatva Latex Hybrid add to a lively feel and a more springy surface.

The coil-on-coil design of the Saatva Classic means coils make up a much higher proportion of the overall materials, which accounts for its extremely high level of bounce.

Edge Support Test

Both Casper and Saatva have excellent performance when it comes to edge support, but Saatva does secure the higher edge support average score, among the 6 mattresses tested here.

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6. The average sitting compression measurement is 4.01″

All of the 6 popular models being compared demonstrate less compression at the edge compared to the average. However, as you can see from the table above, Saatva distinguishes itself with its outstanding lying support.

This is a more subjective measurement that captures the supportive feel (or lackthere of) at the edge. For example, the Casper One mattress has worse lying edge support. Thus, you would need to sleep further away from the edge to feel secure, which also means you’re getting a smaller sleepable surface compared to ones with more robust edges.

The Saatva Classic and Saatva Latex Hybrid are the best models out of these featured for both sitting and lying edge support. Close behind them are the Casper Snow Hybrid and the Saatva RX.

Ultimately, Casper models have good edge support, but lack the finer design elements that Saatva models have to push them into the truly exceptional range for both sitting and lying.

Sex Test

When it comes to comparing sex performance, Saatva beats out Casper once again. Not only does Saatva have the mattress with the highest sex score, but all three models have a sex score that either ties or exceeds the best Casper mattress.

Bounce and edge support are the largest weighted factors in our sex formula, so it should be no surprise as to why the Saatva models fared better. Noise, pressure relief, and cooling are among the other less critical factors.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex and each of the factors that make up its score.

Saatva Classic9.910108.01010
Saatva Latex Hybrid9.49.310109.09.0
Saatva RX9.18.99.410109.0

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.3.

To be fair to Casper, all of their popular models meet or exceed this average performance level. Their best mattress for sex is the Casper Dream with a score of 9.1.

The Saatva RX and Saatva Latex Hybrid have above-average performance, but the best Saatva model for sex is the Saatva Classic with a score of 9.9. Its thinner comfort layer and thicker coil unit allow for tons of pushback, which is extremely beneficial for the dance without pants.

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief is the category in which Saatva has one of the largest advantages over Casper. The 3 popular Saatva models earned scores of 9s and 10s, while Casper ranges from 6.0 to 9.0.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.

The average pressure relief score across all 340+ mattresses tested to date is 8.7.

Therefore, all three Saatva models have above-average pressure relief. The Saatva Classic and the Saatva RX both have 10/10 performance scores. Mattresses with more material, especially in the comfort layer of the design, tend to provide better pressure relief.

The RX model, in particular, was designed to alleviate back and joint paint. It has the thickest and most complex design of all 6 mattresses being compared. Its design includes a thick quilted cover, gel memory foam, poly foam, micro coils, 2″ foam rectangles, pocketed coils, and support foam.

What we see with the Casper models is an average material thickness of 11.67″. Meanwhile, Saatva models have an average of 13.17″. The higher price tag on the Saatva mattresses also speaks to a higher level of foam quality. Finally, the variety of material layers can have a big impact on balancing comfort, support, and overall pressure relief.

In the end, it’s no wonder that the thicker, more expensive models won out here. The Casper One, for example, is the least expensive and has the lowest pressure relief score.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing is another category where Saatva takes a decisive victory over Casper. This time, it’s for a very particular reason. Saatva mattresses ship bagged but uncompressed.

Casper mattresses are the traditional bed-in-a-box style that arrives at your door rolled up in a vacuum-sealed bag / box.

Check out the table below to see what a difference this makes on off-gassing duration.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellSmell Duration
Casper Dream7.8Strong8 days
Casper One6.7Strong12 days
Casper Snow4.4Strong20 days
Saatva Classic10None0 days
Saatva Latex Hybrid10None0 days
Saatva RX10None0 days

Saatva simply has no off-gassing duration, which gives them a perfect 10/10 score. For reference, the average smell duration is roughly 6.5 days for a score of 8.2.

Compared to the average, the 3 popular Casper models are increasingly worse than average. The Casper Snow took nearly 3 weeks to dissipate noticeable offensive odors. Even the quickest model to off-gas, Casper Dream, took over a full week.

Off-gassing shouldn’t be an issue once they finish. However, if you’re particularly sensitive to odors Saatva mattresses will be your best bet.

Company

In our final category, comparing company policies, Saatva performs its coup de grâce. While Casper has good policies that are generally favorable to consumers, you get what you pay for. Saatva’s premium price comes with premium service, warranty, and reliability.

Casper offers a 100-night trial period, a 10-year warranty, free shipping, and free returns. They have a good trust rating and assemble their mattresses within the USA.

Saatva, on the other hand, offers all this and more (with one exception). Their trial period is 365 nights, their warranty is a full lifetime, and they have an outstanding trust rating. The only downside here is the $99 return fee.

Among all mattresses tested to date, the average trial length is 170 nights, and the average warranty is 13 years, excluding 41% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.

The trust metric is subjective, but it’s based on my 10+ years of personal experience testing mattresses. We also get a lot of feedback from our Naplab audience, which we consider. All things considered, I have more confidence in Saatva than I do Casper as a brand.

Finally, Saatva offers a rare perk that is not factored into our company score, but it’s well worth mentioning. All of their mattresses come with free “white-glove delivery”, which means a crew will come to set up your new mattress for you and haul away your old one if you wish.
