Our Verdict
Casper and Ghostbed are two of the most recognizable mattress brands online and in stores. Both companies have built their brand around offering better value than traditional mattress stores, and they currently have a similar lineup of models that include all-foam, hybrid, and memory foam hybrid mattresses.
When it comes to the firmness options they offer, Casper has the greater range of options over Ghostbed, but not by much. Ghostbed mattresses fall between a 5 and 6 firmness level, where 10 is the most firm. Casper mattresses lean softer, with their softest rated at a 4.5. But neither brand has an especially soft or especially firm option.
From a pricing perspective, the brands are unsurprisingly very similar here as well, but the biggest difference between the two is that Casper offers more upgrades and has a higher top-end line. However, both brands offer affordable options under $1,000. Casper’s average mattress price is $1,717, whereas Ghostbed’s average is a little lower at $1,328.
Performance is where these brands start to show a larger difference. Here, Ghostbed beats Casper across the board: its lowest score is higher (8.30 vs. 7.88), its average score is higher (8.68 vs. 8.49), and its best score is higher than Casper’s (9.15 vs. 8.73). The average score from all 380+ mattresses is 8.53, so by that measure, Ghostbed performs above average and Casper slightly below average.
As we’ll detail throughout this comparison, Casper gets a lot of things right, but Ghostbed generally has more well rounded performance across our 8 testing categories.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?
The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.
Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.
Between Casper and Ghostbed, the two top recommendations are Casper Dream Max and Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid.
Best Casper
Casper Dream Max

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: Soft (4.5)
The Casper Dream Max is a 13.5″ hybrid mattress with poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It has a soft feel with deep sinkage and very high bounce. The performance is above-average compared to all mattresses tested to date and the price is 62% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress. While the price is steep, if you’re looking for a high-quality hybrid with a soft feel, the Dream Max is a great option. It has above-average cooling, response time, sex performance, pressure relief, and company score.
Best Ghostbed
Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: Medium-Firm (6)
The Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid mattress with 3 distinct layers of poly foam, pocketed coils (foam reinforced), support foam base, and topped with a thick quilted cover. It has a medium-firm feel with deep sinkage and low bounce. Its price is $1,699 for a queen, which is 14% more expensive than average, but its performance is within the top 11% tested to date. Notably, it has exceptional cooling and pressure relief, which sleepers tend to rate as the most important factors when choosing a mattress.
One of the main differences between these two mattresses is their feel. The Casper Dream Max is a soft hybrid, while the Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid has a medium-firm feel. Both mattresses have a poly foam comfort layer and a pocketed coil support layer.
While both mattresses have deep sinkage, the Ghostbed pairs that with low levels of bounce, which gives the mattress lower levels of motion transfer as well.
The Casper Dream Max has very high levels of bounce, which ultimately means higher levels of motion transfer, but also better sex performance.
Another big difference is the price. The Casper Dream Max is a good bit more expensive than the Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid.

Firmness
Casper ranges in firmness from 4.5 to 6 out of 10, and Ghostbed mattresses range from 5 to 6 out of 10.
These two brands have nearly identical firmness ranges. However, Casper does tend to lean softer with more medium (5) options and their one soft (4.5) option in the Dream Max.
Ghostbed models are nearly all a medium-firm (6) with the Ghostbed 3D Matrix being the one option with a medium rating (5).
Ultimately, these should be suitable for the vast majority of sleepers. However, neither brand has a true firm model that, while niche, is preferred by some.
Check the table below to see the details of each mattress.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test
Of the 6 models we’re comparing, none of them performed poorly when it comes to cooling. In fact, each brand has a model that shows good (8.0), excellent (9.0), and outstanding performance (10). Unsurprisingly, the difference in cooling performance is strongly correlated with price.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding cooling.
| Cooling Test | Score | Baseline | Max. Temp. | Ending Temp. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 8.0 | 73.1° | 89.6° | 79.7° |
| Casper Snow | 10 | 73.8° | 88.1° | 78.2° |
| Casper Dream | 9.0 | 75.0° | 90.0° | 79.7° |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | 8.0 | 74.7° | 91.0° | 80.4° |

| Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid | 10 | 73.9° | 90.3° | 77.9° |
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.
Casper One
Ghostbed Signature Hybrid
Casper Snow
Ghostbed Luxe Foam
Casper Dream
Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid
The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.
The Casper One and the Ghostbed Signature Hybrid are the cheapest models within this small comparison, and they are the ones with the lowest cooling score (8.0), which is considerably below average.
Conversely, the Casper Dream is a mid-tier model, and the Ghostbed Luxe Foam is a top-tier model, and they both earned a 9.0, a slightly better than average score.
The biggest issue with the Luxe Foam is its extra material and all-foam construction, as foam tends to retain heat more than mattresses with coils. This makes it better than the budget mattress, but certainly not great.
Finally, we see the best mattresses for above-average cooling performance with the Casper Snow and Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid. These are of a similar price point, and each one showcases different design elements that can positively impact breathability and mitigate heat buildup, including as phase change material, hybrid construction, and heat delete bands.
Overall, it’s clear that both Casper and Ghostbed know how to create a mattress with exceptional cooling. It’s simply a matter of whether you’re willing to pay for it.
Sinkage Test
When it comes to how much sinkage each brand offers, we can see a slight pattern with the 6 most popular mattresses we’re comparing.
Generally speaking, Casper offers less sinkage, which creates a less enveloping feel. As a brand, Casper doesn’t offer thick quilted or pillow top covers, instead opting for thin, non-quilted covers.

Contrast this with Ghostbed, which we measured to have more sinkage on average. Their lowest tier models (the comfort series) have a similar thin knit cover design as Casper, but their upper tiers all use quilted covers that come with a more enveloping feel and a more dramatic body hug.
| Sinkage Test | Sinkage Feel | Sinkage Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Casper One | Minimal | 1.77″ |
| Casper Snow | Deep | 2.36″ |
| Casper Dream | Minimal | 1.89″ |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | Moderate | 2.23″ |
| Ghostbed Luxe Foam | Very Deep | 2.72″ |
| Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid | Deep | 2.49″ |
The level of sinkage for each mattress is documented in the images below.
Casper One

Ghostbed Signature Hybrid

Casper Snow

Ghostbed Luxe Foam

Casper Dream

Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.22″.
Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which creates more optimal support for these sleeping positions. With this in mind, the Casper One, Casper Dream, and Ghostbed Signature Hybrid would be the most suitable.
Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Casper Snow, Ghostbed Luxe, or Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid.
Motion Transfer Test
When it comes to motion transfer, Ghostbed has a solid advantage over Casper. Within this 3v3 comparison, Ghostbed has an average motion transfer score of 8.7, whereas Casper only has an 8.2.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.
| Motion Transfer Test | Score | Acc. Range |
|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 8.0 | 9.42 m/s² |
| Casper Snow | 8.7 | 7.95 m/s² |
| Casper Dream | 8.0 | 9.48 m/s² |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | 8.0 | 9.34 m/s² |
| Ghostbed Luxe Foam | 9.2 | 6.69 m/s² |

The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.
Casper One
Ghostbed Signature Hybrid
Casper Snow
Ghostbed Luxe Foam
Casper Dream
Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid
The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.
Given this, Casper mattresses are not bad by any means; they’re simply average.
Ghostbed models tend to have more material, which can certainly help disperse motion rather than transfer it across the surface. Furthermore, thin covers, especially tight ones, can have an issue where they pull towards sinking bodies.
These two factors are exemplified by the data above, as the mattresses with less material and thinner covers performed worse in our motion transfer tests.
The best mattress in terms of motion transfer is the Ghostbed Luxe Foam, most likely due to its all-foam design and thick quilted cover.
Response Test
When it comes to response time in this 3v3 comparison, Casper takes the win. Casper has an average response time score of 8.3 compared to Ghostbed’s 7.9. Generally speaking, Casper makes a highly responsive mattress.
The only exception is with the Casper Snow, which had an incredibly slow material response. The other two models, the Casper One and Casper Dream, are near instantaneous.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.
| Response Test | Score | Mostly Recovered | Completely Recovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 9.9 | 0.2 seconds | 0.4 seconds |
| Casper Snow | 5.0 | 2.8 seconds | 5.1 seconds |
| Casper Dream | 9.9 | 0.2 seconds | 0.4 seconds |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | 8.4 | 0.3 seconds | 1.6 seconds |
| Ghostbed Luxe Foam | 6.8 | 0.6 seconds | 2.0 seconds |
| Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid | 8.5 | 0.4 seconds | 1.0 seconds |
The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
Casper One
Ghostbed Signature Hybrid
Casper Snow
Ghostbed Luxe Foam
Casper Dream
Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid
The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8.
The formulation of foam has a huge impact on a mattress’s material recovery speed. So when we see a memory foam at the top of the construction, like with the Ghostbed Luxe Foam and Casper Snow, it’s a good bet that response time will suffer.

For the Casper One and Casper Dream with 9.9 scores, their poly foam is placed above the memory foam layer. When you combine that fact with less material overall, you get a mattress that feels lively and easy to move on.
Bounce Test
When it comes to bounce, the two brands clearly exhibit different levels. Casper’s 3 models had an average bounce measurement of 9.68″. Ghostbed’s average bounce is 6.59″, which is quite low.
| Bounce Test | Bounce Feel | Bounce Height |
|---|---|---|
| Casper One | Moderate | 8.77″ |
| Casper Snow | Moderate | 9.54″ |
| Casper Dream | High | 10.73″ |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | Low | 7.31″ |
| Ghostbed Luxe Foam | Very Low | 5.54″ |
| Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid | Low | 6.92″ |
The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
Casper One
Ghostbed Signature Hybrid
Casper Snow
Ghostbed Luxe Foam
Casper Dream
Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid
For reference, the average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.79″.
Furthermore, I consider 10″-12″ to be my ideal range where there is enough bounce to help without creating an overly trampoline-like feel.
The Casper Snow and Casper Dream both are well over this mark, and the Casper One is just about there as well.
Meanwhile, Ghostbed’s mattresses are all well under the average measurement and below my ideal range.
This is where the extra foam material of Ghostbed mattresses is not a benefit, like it would be for pressure relief. Even the two hybrid models failed to meet my benchmark, despite having a coil unit (generally good for bounce).
Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and improve sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.
So if having a more lively feel is important to you, I’d go with Casper models over Ghostbed.
Edge Support Test
For edge support, the two brands are fairly evenly matched. Casper has an average edge support score of 8.8, but Ghostbed takes the win with an average of 9.0.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.
| Edge Support Test | Score | Sitting Sinkage | Lying Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 8.2 | 3.50″ | Fair |
| Casper Snow | 9.4 | 3.25″ | Excellent |
| Casper Dream | 8.9 | 4.00″ | Excellent |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | 9.4 | 3.25″ | Excellent |
| Ghostbed Luxe Foam | 9.1 | 3.75″ | Excellent |

The level of edge support is documented in the images below.
Casper One

Ghostbed Signature Hybrid

Casper Snow

Ghostbed Luxe Foam

Casper Dream

Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7.
By this measure, both brands are above average. The best models are typically hybrids, and that’s exactly what we see in this 3v3 as well.
The Casper Dream, Casper Snow, Ghostbed Signature Hybrid, and Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid all performed above average, while the two all-foam models (Casper One and Ghostbed Luxe Foam) were the lowest scoring.
The best mattress for edge support goes to the Casper Snow and Ghostbed Signature Hybrid, with only 3.25″ of sitting edge compression.
These two models benefit from having pocketed coil units that are reinforced for extra support. They also don’t have quite as much material as the Ghostbed Luxe models, whose 7.0″ comfort layers somewhat offset the benefit of a reinforced coil unit.
Ultimately, both brands provide models with strong edge support, ensuring you feel secure while lying or sitting near the edge.
Sex Test
Next, let’s talk about sex performance. Casper easily takes the win when it comes to making a mattress that checks the right boxes for sex.
Casper’s 3 models in this comparison beat each 3 from Ghostbed, which all have sub-8.0 scores. On average, Casper has a sex score of 8.8. Meanwhile, Ghostbed has an average sex score of 7.5.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.
| Sex Test | Sex Score | Bounce | Edge Support | Noise | Pressure Relief | Cooling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 8.3 | 8.0 | 9.4 | 10 | 6.0 | 8.0 |
| Casper Snow | 8.9 | 8.5 | 9.7 | 10 | 9.0 | 10 |
| Casper Dream | 9.1 | 9.2 | 8.8 | 10 | 8.0 | 9.0 |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | 7.8 | 7.0 | 9.7 | 10 | 9.0 | 8.0 |
| Ghostbed Luxe Foam | 7.1 | 5.9 | 9.1 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 |
| Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid | 7.5 | 6.8 | 8.1 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. Our weighted sex formula places a huge weight on bounce, which Casper consistently has more of than Ghostbed.
The Casper Dream, with a 9.1 score, is the best mattress in this mini comparison when it comes to sex. The pushback from the coil unit and lack of overly thick comfort layers make for a springy surface that conserves the energy that’s put into it.

Contrast that with something like the Ghostbed Luxe Foam (7.1), which is the lowest score in this comparison, where you have a super thick comfort layer and no coils to provide extra pushback.
When it comes to sex performance, Casper mattresses outperform Ghostbed’s across the board.
Pressure Relief Test
Regarding pressure relief, we see the largest, clearest difference between these two brands yet. Ghostbed decisively takes the win over Casper in this 3v3 comparison.
Ghostbed models average a near-perfect 9.7 pressure relief score compared to Casper’s 7.7. Not only is this a huge lead over another brand, but it is an exceptional score by any measure.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.
| Pressure Relief Test | Score | Comfort Layer | Support Layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 6.0 | 3.0″ | 7.0″ |
| Casper Snow | 9.0 | 3.0″ | 8.5″ |
| Casper Dream | 8.0 | 3.0″ | 8.5″ |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | 9.0 | 5.5″ | 7.0″ |
| Ghostbed Luxe Foam | 10 | 7.0″ | 7.0″ |
| Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid | 10 | 7.0″ | 7.0″ |
The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.
The best scores we see in this comparison come from the Ghostbed Luxe Foam and Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid (10/10). This is where the extra material that held these models back in other categories comes to their advantage. The average comfort layer we see is 4.26″, and these both have 7.00″
This isn’t to say that bigger is always better. But when you combine quantity and quality, it’s a solid recipe for outstanding pressure relief.
Casper One

Ghostbed Signature Hybrid

Casper Snow

Ghostbed Luxe Foam

Casper Dream

Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid

Casper’s best model is the Casper Snow, which is only 11.5″, but the quality of memory foam in its top layer is undeniably great, earning it the 9.0 score.
The varying types of layers also play a role. Each layer can balance out the feel of a mattress to achieve a better comfort dynamic. The opposite of this is seen with the Casper One, which has only 3 all-foam layers, and it had the lowest pressure relief score in this comparison.
Overall, Ghostbed has both more material and more complex designs that give it the edge over Casper when it comes to pressure relief.
Off-Gassing Test
Next, we have off-gassing as a lesser-weighted, yet still notable performance category. We again see an extremely clear difference between these two brands, in favor of Ghostbed.
Ghostbed mattresses averaged an 8.2 off-gassing score to Casper at 6.3.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.
| Off-Gassing Test | Score | Initial Smell | Smell Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casper One | 6.7 | Strong | 12 days |
| Casper Snow | 4.4 | Strong | 20 days |
| Casper Dream | 7.8 | Strong | 8 days |
| Ghostbed Signature Hybrid | 7.5 | Strong | 9 days |
| Ghostbed Luxe Foam | 8.6 | Strong | 5 days |
| Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid | 8.6 | Strong | 5 days |
The average smell score is 8.0, and the average smell duration is 7.16 days, based on all mattresses tested to date.
Casper mattresses average a smell duration of 13.3 days, which is nearly double our site-wide average. This is consistent outside our mini comparison as well, as no Casper (USA) mattress we’ve tested has earned a smell score of 8.0 or higher.

Ghostbed mattresses perform just slightly better than average, with an average smell duration of 6.3 days.
While neither brand is particularly fast at off-gassing, Ghostbed mattresses being under a week is a notable benefit over Casper.
Company
Finally, we come to the company score, which is another weighted formula that factors in various elements of a company’s policies.

They each offer free shipping and free returns, and have a trial period of 100 days — 101 days in Ghostbed’s case. Both companies also manufacture their mattresses in the USA.
The only big difference is the length of the warranty period, with Ghostbed offering a full 25 years to Casper’s 10-year warranty.
