If you’ve ever shopped for a bed frame, browsed handcrafted furniture, or looked into a woodworking project, you’ve probably come across unfamiliar terms like mortise and tenon, quarter-sawn lumber, or center support rail.

While some of these words describe traditional woodworking techniques, others refer to the components that give furniture and bed frames their strength, stability, and style. This glossary breaks down some of the most common furniture and bed woodworking terms in plain language.

Antiquing – The process of making new furniture appear older through distressing techniques, specialized finishes, or surface treatments.

Apron – A horizontal support piece that connects furniture legs beneath a tabletop, chair seat, or bed frame.

Bed Post – A vertical structural support located at one or more corners of a bed frame. Bed posts may be decorative or load-bearing.

Bed Rail – The long side piece that connects a headboard and footboard and helps support the mattress system.

Board Foot – A unit used to measure lumber volume. One board foot equals a board measuring 12 inches by 12 inches by 1 inch.

Box Joint – A woodworking joint made from interlocking rectangular cuts that create a strong connection between a pair of pieces of wood.

Box Spring – A mattress foundation consisting of a wooden or metal frame covered with fabric. It is commonly used beneath traditional innerspring mattresses.

Bunkie Board – A thin support board placed beneath a mattress to provide additional support and create a firmer sleeping surface.

Canopy Bed – A bed frame featuring four tall posts connected by overhead rails that may support decorative fabric coverings.

Captain’s Bed – A bed frame designed with built-in drawers or storage compartments beneath the mattress platform.

Center Support Rail – A structural support running down the center of larger bed frames to prevent sagging and improve weight distribution.

Chamfer – A beveled edge cut at an angle, often used to soften corners and improve a piece’s appearance.

Cleat – A strip of wood attached to another component to provide support or create a mounting surface.

Dado – A channel cut into a board that allows another piece of wood, such as a shelf or divider, to fit securely into place.

Dovetail Joint – A strong interlocking joint commonly used in drawers and fine furniture construction.

End Grain – The pattern made by exposed ends of wood fibers that is visible when wood is cut across its length.

Face Frame – The front framework attached to cabinets and certain furniture pieces that supports doors and drawers.

Figure – The visual pattern created by variations in grain direction, density, or growth, often prized for decorative furniture.

Floating Bed Frame – A bed frame designed to appear as though it is suspended above the floor while concealing its support structure.

Foot Rail – A horizontal rail located at the foot of a bed frame that connects the footboard to the side rails.

Footboard – The decorative or structural panel located at the foot of a bed.

Foundation – The support system placed beneath a mattress, such as slats, a platform, or a box spring.

Hardwood – Wood sourced from deciduous trees such as oak, maple, walnut, or cherry.

Headboard – The upright panel attached to the head of a bed that serves both decorative and functional purposes.

Heartwood – The dense inner portion of a tree that is typically darker and more stable than sapwood.

Joinery – The methods and techniques used to connect pieces of wood together.

Joint – Any location where two or more woodworking components meet.

Kiln-Dried Lumber – Wood that has been dried in a controlled environment to reduce moisture content and improve stability.

Knot – The visible remnant of a branch embedded within the wood, often creating distinctive patterns in the grain.

Laminate – A thin decorative or protective layer bonded to a substrate material.

Lathe – A machine used to rotate wood while it is shaped with cutting tools.

Mortise – A cavity cut into a piece of wood designed to receive a matching tenon.

Mortise and Tenon Joint – A traditional woodworking joint in which a projecting tenon fits into a mortise to create a strong connection.

Platform Bed – A bed frame designed to support a mattress without requiring a box spring or separate foundation.

Plywood – An engineered wood product made by bonding multiple layers of veneer together.

Pocket Hole – An angled hole drilled to allow screws to securely join two pieces of wood.

Post – The square upper section of a furniture leg or bed post that often accommodates joinery.

Quarter-Sawn Lumber – Lumber cut in a way that produces straighter grain patterns and improved dimensional stability.

Sapwood – The lighter-colored outer portion of a tree that actively transports water and nutrients.

Spindle Bed – A bed frame featuring rows of decorative vertical spindles in the headboard, footboard, or both.

Stretcher – A support component connecting furniture legs near the base to increase strength and stability.

Support Leg – An additional leg positioned beneath a bed frame or furniture piece to improve load-bearing capacity.

Taper – A gradual reduction in thickness or width along the length of a furniture component.

Tenon – A projection on the end of a piece of wood designed to fit into a mortise.

Threaded Insert – A metal fitting installed in wood to create a durable threaded connection for hardware.

Trundle Bed – A bed frame that contains a secondary pull-out bed stored beneath the primary sleeping surface.

Turning Square – A square block of wood prepared for shaping on a lathe.

Wood Species – The specific type of tree from which lumber is sourced, influencing appearance, hardness, durability, and workability.
