Have you ever thought about the best time to go out to eat in your city? After all, some cities serve their best fried food after midnight, while others peak early over eggs and waffles.

To figure out which side each U.S. city falls on, we dug into thousands of Yelp reviews across the 100 most populated U.S. cities, comparing average ratings for restaurants tagged “Good for Late Night” and “Good for Breakfast.”

A drawing of two servers holding up trays of food. The server on the left holds late-night junk food, and the server on the right holds breakfast food classics.

The Best and Worst U.S. Cities for Late-Night Eats

A map of the U.S. highlighting the top 10 and bottom 5 cities for late-night eats based on their average Yelp rating for restaurants in that category.

The best cities for late-night food are not only full of restaurants with extended hours convenient for night owls, but they’re also catering to anyone out there craving a tasty midnight snack. Here are the top 10 cities with the highest-rated late-night restaurants based on the average Yelp rating (out of 5) for restaurants in the city tagged as “Good for Late-Night”:

#1 Buffalo, NY — 4.29/5
Buffalo’s strong late-night ratings might be thanks to the avid fans of the Buffalo Bills who likely spend several games every season at their local late-night sports bars and dives.

#2 Tulsa, OK — 4.24
Tulsa might not be the first city that comes to mind for late-night eats, but a tight-knit food scene often means fewer misses and more consistently solid spots.

#3 New York, NY — 4.07
Of course, the city that never sleeps has great late-night options. With a true 24/7 food culture, New York delivers reliable late-night dining across countless neighborhoods.

#4 Las Vegas, NV — 4.02
Vegas is quite literally built for late nights, and its restaurant scene reflects that with solid options catering to after-hours crowds hungry from partying hard.

#5 Los Angeles, CA — 4.00
The city of stars is also a city of great late-night eats. LA benefits from its size and diversity, offering a wide mix of cuisines even after midnight.

#6 Knoxville, TN — 3.77
With a major college presence, Knoxville’s late-night scene likely benefits from a steady demand from the students of the University of Tennessee.

#7 (tie) Chicago, IL — 3.71
Chicago’s deep-dish reputation doesn’t stop at dinner, and its late-night scene holds strong thanks to a mix of classic diners and 24-hour staples.

#7 (tie) Seattle, WA — 3.71
A steady lineup of go-to teriyaki spots helps keep ratings surprisingly strong in the Emerald City.

#9 (tie) Oklahoma City, OK — 3.69
Oklahoma City’s growing food scene seems to extend into the late hours, with dependable options that keep ratings steady.

#9 (tie) Charleston, SC — 3.69
Known for its food scene overall, Charleston carries that quality into late-night dining.

While Buffalo takes the top spot, which is a bit unexpected, the ratings don’t lie. Tulsa also stands out with a strong 4.24. Then you’ve got the usual suspects. New York and Las Vegas both land near the top, which makes sense for cities that are active well past midnight.

At the other end, late-night options struggle in a few places:

  • Stockton, CA — 2.56
  • Bakersfield, CA — 2.84
  • Fresno, CA — 2.92
  • Riverside, CA — 3.04 (tie)
  • El Paso, TX — 3.04 (tie)

But what about the best cities for breakfast?

#3 San Francisco, CA — 4.02

#4 San Diego, CA — 3.95
With its laid-back lifestyle, San Diego leans into breakfast and brunch, where quality and consistency go a long way.

#5 (tie) Portland, OR — 3.94
Portland’s reputation for quirky, high-quality food extends naturally into breakfast, with plenty of standout local spots.

#5 (tie) Sarasota, FL — 3.94
Sarasota’s mix of tourists and retirees likely fuels the strong breakfast scene, where consistency and comfort matter most.

#5 (tie) Chicago, IL — 3.94
Chicago’s deep food culture doesn’t skip the morning, with diners and brunch spots keeping standards high across the board.

#8 Seattle, WA — 3.93
Seattle’s coffee culture pairs naturally with a strong breakfast scene, helping boost ratings across the city.

#9 Spokane, WA — 3.91
In Spokane, a tight selection of reliable breakfast spots keeps quality consistently high.

#10 Denver, CO — 3.89
Denver’s active, early-rising population likely plays a role in a breakfast scene that delivers solid ratings across the board.

While Los Angeles takes the top spot, it’s not all that surprising given its massive brunch culture and depth of options. New York and San Francisco are right behind, both cities where breakfast staples are taken seriously and executed consistently well.

Then you’ve got a mix of cities like San Diego,  Portland, and Chicago, where strong food scenes naturally carry over into the morning hours.

At the other end, breakfast options struggle in a few places:

  • Stockton, CA — 2.85
  • Riverside, CA — 3.24
  • Sacramento, CA — 3.27
  • Hartford, CT — 3.32

Methodology

To determine whether each of the 100 most-populated U.S. cities is better for late-night eats or breakfast, we combed through thousands of pages of Yelp reviews using the “Good for Late Night” and “Good for Breakfast” filters for each city. After each city received an average star rating out of 5 for each filter, we highlighted the type of restaurant each city was rated higher for, along with the top and bottom overall cities for late-night and breakfast restaurants.

Note: To be included in the study, each city had to have at least 10 restaurants for each filter. Additionally, only restaurants with at least 10 reviews were included in the city averages. Worcester, MA; Bridgeport, CT; McAllen, TX; Dayton, OH; Fort Myers, FL; Lakeland, FL; Akron, OH; Springfield, MA; Poughkeepsie, NY; Ogden, UT; Winston-Salem, NC; Provo, UT; Wichita, KS; Harrisburg, PA; and Jackson, MS, were excluded due to low results for late-night and/or breakfast restaurants.”
