Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Mattress for Stomach Sleepers list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best mattresses for stomach sleepers we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have a medium-firm to slightly firm feel, and have a design that is ideal for stomach sleepers.

When selecting the best mattress for stomach sleepers, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to have a firmness of 6-7 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This is a medium-firm to slightly firm feel. This firmness is the ideal range to maintain spinal alignment when sleeping on your stomach.
  • Had to have Very Minimal, Minimal, or Moderate sinkage depth, which is the ideal sinkage level for most stomach sleepers to maintain spinal alignment
  • Had to have a performance score of 9.24 or higher.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
  • Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top pick by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more.

Best For

  • Exceptionally good cooling
  • Higher levels of bounce
  • Fantastic pressure relief, despite only having an 11″ thickness

Considerations

  • Lacks edge support when seated directly at the edge of the mattress
  • Very high bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Shorter 100-night trial period (77 nights less than average)

Our Verdict

The Leesa Sapira is a hybrid mattress made of poly foam, memory foam, support foam, and a pocketed coil base. It is 11″ thick, 1″ thinner than average, but has fantastic performance overall.

The Sapira Hybrid is available in a single firmness, medium-firm, which has a feel of 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This firmness is suitable for many different types of sleepers.

The Sapira Hybrid has moderate levels of sinkage and very high levels of bounce. The high bounce gives the Sapira an active feel while still maintaining low levels of motion transfer.

Stomach sleepers, in particular, will enjoy this firmness level as it creates the right amount of pushback. The moderate sinkage from the high-quality yet limited memory foam layer also works to ensure proper spinal alignment. The transitional poly foam layer also goes a long way to limiting heavier body parts from directly feeling the pocketed coil unit within the support layer.

In our performance score, the Sapira Hybrid earned an overall score of 9.47 overall, which ranks it among the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

For a queen mattress, the Sapira Hybrid is $1,599, only 5% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress. Despite the higher cost, the Sapira provides a fantastic value and a great mattress for stomach sleepers.

Best For

  • Incredible cooling performance
  • Thick, quality memory foam creates fantastic pressure relief
  • Edge support is extremely robust

Considerations

  • Classic memory foam feel also creates low bounce and slower response
  • Lackluster sex performance
  • Price tag is higher than average by 31%

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is a 14″ hybrid mattress made up of poly foam, memory foam, and a pocketed coil base. The plush 2.0″ quilted cover is thicker than what you’ll see with the standard Helix Midnight. Additionally, the Luxe has the option to add an advanced cooling cover for an additional $199. If cooling is especially important, this could be a nice add-on.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm with a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. This creates a surface that is stable and allows for a high degree of contour that slowly envelops your body.

For stomach sleepers, the moderate sinkage and plush quilted cover provide great pressure relief without allowing sleepers to engage too deeply with the mattress. The Midnight Elite is the top-tier mattress within this collection, but because it has deeper sinkage, I would recommend stomach sleepers stick with the Midnight or Midnight Luxe.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.43, ranking the mattress in the 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 25% percent more expensive than average. Opting for the cooling cover does increase the cost up to just slightly above $2K, but again, what you gain in overall performance may certainly be worth the added price.

Best For

  • Extremely low levels of motion transfer, while retaining high levels of bounce
  • Minimal sinkage and a more generalized contour
  • Natural materials—3.0″ natural latex comfort layer

Considerations

  • Not all sleepers enjoy the feel of latex foam (minimal sinkage)
  • $99 to return the mattress
  • Price ($2,095) is 35% more expensive than the average latex hybrid mattress

Our Verdict

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a latex hybrid mattress with a plush quilted cover, a natural latex comfort layer, and a pocketed coil base for support. Being a latex hybrid, this mattress is known for a more generalized contour that can be beneficial for stomach sleepers.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is available in a single firmness, which comes in at a 6.5 out of 10, giving the mattress a medium-firm feel. For stomach sleepers, this firmness is that sweet spot of support and comfort.

It has minimal sinkage when lying on the mattress and a high level of bounce. This gives the mattress an active feel without too much give in the materials.

Stomach sleepers can benefit from the Saatva Latex Hybrid for many reasons. The latex foam offers 5 distinct zones that offer more or less support where bodies would need it. This allows for optimal spinal alignment, especially for stomach sleeping. Minimal sinkage also works toward this end and helps maintain that neutral spinal alignment when sleeping on your stomach. If you’re a stomach sleeper who prefers increased support and less sinkage for the belly / lower back, then the Saatva Latex Hybrid is a perfect choice.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.42, ranking the mattress in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

The high performance does come at a higher cost of $2,199 (for a queen). This is 18% more expensive than the average latex hybrid, but if you have the budget for it, the Saatva performs significantly higher than average so it’s still a great value.

Best For

  • Exceptional cooling performance and latex layers are a big contributor
  • Extremely fast material response time
  • Low levels of motion transfer, 38% less than average

Considerations

  • Extremely high bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Edge support while seated is a bit lacking (4.5″) compared to average (3.94″)
  • Shorter 100-night trial period, 77 nights shorter than average

Our Verdict

The Birch is an 11″ latex hybrid made of GOLS-certified organic latex, pocketed coils at the base, and an organic cotton cover on top.

This mattress comes in a single firmness—7 out of 10, which gives it a slightly firm feel. For a softer feel, check out the Birch Luxe, which shares many similarities with the Birch, but has a thicker softer cover for a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10). Both versions could be suitable for stomach sleepers.

The Birch has moderate sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. Latex, as a natural material, tends to be bouncier, firmer, and more responsive than other foam types. It is also typically equipped with aeration holes, which helps improve cooling and overall breathability.

In our performance tests, the Birch had an overall score of 9.35, ranking the mattress in the top 3% of all mattresses we’ve tested (over 360+ mattresses tested).

This mattress is $1,499 for a queen, 19% less than the average price for a latex hybrid. Considering the high performance and lower than average price point, the value of the Birch mattress is exceptional.

Best For

  • Great pressure relief and a moderate level of sinkage
  • Low levels of motion transfer, 34% less than average
  • Excellent value—7% less expensive compared to the average memory foam hybrid

Considerations

  • Lower levels of bounce contribute to lower sex score than average
  • Fully-recovered response time is slightly slower than average
  • Cooling is excellent, but didn’t earn a 10/10

Our Verdict

The Glacier Apex is a high-profile, 14.25″ memory foam hybrid mattress made of copper memory foam, memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil base. It is topped by a plush 1.25″ pillowtop cover for added softness.

This mattress is available in one firmness, 6 out of 10, with a medium-firm feel. For stomach sleepers, this firmness is still at that ideal balance of support and comfort, maintaining spinal alignment when sleeping on your belly.

The Apex has moderate sinkage and a low level of bounce. The low bounce is undoubtedly due to the memory foam comfort layer, which limits motion transfer and bounce.

The Apex also uses zoning in its comfort material layers to create more pushback where it’s needed for stomach sleeping. The moderate sinkage it offers helps to promote proper spinal alignment when lying on your stomach. So, while the coil unit may not be zoned, the moderate sinkage and zoned foam layers achieve the same effect and create great stomach sleeping support.

In our performance tests, the Apex earned an overall score of 9.27, ranking the mattress in the top 6% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking exclusively at memory foam hybrids, the Apex is the #1 best memory foam hybrid we’ve tested to date.

Considering price, the Glacier Apex costs $1,399, which is 9% less expensive than the average memory foam hybrid, a savings of $136 for a queen mattress. This makes the Apex a fantastic value all around.

  • Excellent cooling performance, 10/10 perfect score
  • Exceptional pressure relief with a 4.25″ comfort layer and three available firmnesses
  • Balanced feel with moderate sinkage and bounce

Considerations

  • 3% higher levels of motion transfer compared to average
  • $99 return fee
  • Costs 20% more than the average hybrid mattress

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a 13.25″ hybrid made of a quilted cover, poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base.

This mattress comes in three firmness levels—soft (4), medium-firm (6), and firm (8). Heavier-weighted stomach sleepers may do better with the firm, while light to moderate-weight stomach sleepers will likely prefer the medium-firm.

The Aurora Luxe mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and a moderate degree of bounce. This gives the mattress a balanced feel that suits a wider range of sleepers.

The balanced feel, combined with the firmness options available, can make for a fantastic stomach sleeping experience. The mattress is also zoned, like many other mattresses on this list. This allows for the middle of the mattress, which supports the hips and belly, to have more pushback, while the upper and lower body can enjoy more comfort and pressure relief. This is ideal for stomach sleepers as it helps bring the spine into a more neutral alignment.

In our performance tests, the Aurora Luxe Hybrid earned an overall score of 9.24, which ranks it in the top 8% of all mattresses tested to date.

A queen-sized Aurora Luxe costs $1,398, which is 8% less expensive than the average hybrid mattress, a savings of $125. Given its fantastic performance and low price, the Aurora Luxe is a great option for stomach sleepers.
