Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Mattress for Cooling list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best mattresses for cooling we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have exceptional cooling (earning a 10 out of 10 in our cooling test).

When selecting the best mattress for cooling, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, cooling performance, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to have a cooling score of 10 out of 10.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
  • Had to have an overall score of 9.24 or higher.
  • Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top 2 picks by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more.

What Gives A Mattress Good Cooling?

A cooling mattress generally has a design and/or one or more materials that are specifically advantageous for limiting heat retention, increasing airflow / breathability, and keeping the sleeping surface cool.

There are a number of material and design approaches we’ve seen over the years, but here are just a few of the highlights.

Gel Foam

Copper Foam

Graphite Foam

Convoluted Foam

Aeration Holes

Open Grid Polymer

Hybrid Design

Phase Change Spray

Cooling Cover

Each of these design strategies is aimed at improving cooling performance. While our scoring tests do not give any extra bonus points for these features, they are a contributing factor to each mattress’s overall cooling score.

Best For

  • High-quality materials
  • Deep-contouring pillowtop, while maintaining support
  • Sleepers of all body types and sleeper weights (up to 300 lbs. per side)

Considerations

  • Deep sinkage (2.38″) may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Returns are free, but exchanges cost $49
  • Moderate bounce is good for sex, but could be better

Our Verdict

The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress made of gel foam, poly foam, support foam, and a pocketed coil base. It is 14″ thick and is the highest-performing mattress we’ve tested to date.

This mattress comes in three firmness levels softer (4), luxury firm (6), and firmer (7), where 10 is the most firm. The performance data below is from the Luxury Firm version. For sleepers over 250 lbs., there is the Winkbed Plus, a 14.5″ plus-sized mattress with a 5.5″ comfort layer and great performance for heavier bodies.

The Winkbed Luxury Firm has deep sinkage with moderate levels of bounce, a balanced feel with a good degree of contour, especially beneficial for side sleepers.

For cooling performance, the Winkbed is a great option. It has a quilted cover that is topped by a breathable Tencel fabric, as well as a combination of gel foam, poly foam, and pocketed coils, which allows for great breathability and limited heat retention.

In our performance tests, the Winkbed scores a 9.79 for overall performance. This makes it the #1 best mattress tested to date (over 360+ mattresses considered).

A queen-sized mattress is $1,499, which is 2% less than the average hybrid mattress. Especially given the higher performance, Winkbed is the mattress to beat across the board.

Best For

  • Plush euro-top cover & great cooling performance
  • Exceptional edge support, 24% less sinkage than average when seated at the edge
  • Ships uncompressed, includes in-home delivery, setup, & old mattress removal

Considerations

  • Extremely high bounce, significantly more than the average mattress
  • Deep sinkage may not be great for all sleepers
  • Priced at $1,799, the Saatva is 23% more expensive than the average mattress

Our Verdict

The Saatva Classic is a coil mattress that is offered either at 11.5″ thick or 14.5″ thick. The mattress is built with a coil-on-coil design, topped with a plush Euro pillow top and organic cotton cover.

The Saatva is available in three firmness levels—Plush Soft (4), Luxury Firm (6), or Firm (8), where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has a deep level of sinkage and an extremely high level of bounce. The coil-on-coil design enhances the bounce and gives this mattress an extremely active feel. These coils are also a big contributing factor to the exceptional cooling performance.

In our tests, the Saatva earned an overall score of 9.68, making it the #2 best mattress tested to date. Its exceptional performance is unmatched by any mattress except for the Winkbed.

A Saatva Classic is $1,795 for a queen mattress, which is 23% more expensive than the average mattress, but you’re also getting a mattress that performs significantly above the average score. For fantastic cooling and an active feel, the Saatva Classic checks all the boxes.

9.4 Company

Best For

  • Exceptionally good cooling with excellent breathability
  • Low levels of motion transfer
  • Fantastic pressure relief with 4.0″ comfort layer and moderate sinkage

Considerations

  • Lacks edge support when seated directly at the edge of the mattress
  • Very high bounce is great for sex, but could still be too much for some sleepers
  • Shorter 100-night trial period (77 nights less than average)

Our Verdict

The Leesa Sapira is an 11″ hybrid made of poly foam, memory foam, transitional support foam, and a pocketed coil base. It has a non-quilted cotton cover and 4.0″ of comfort material.

The Leesa Sapira is available in one firmness—medium-firm, a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. For something that is softer or firmer, you may want to consider the Sapira Chill. This mattress is also named Sapira, but has other special features designed specifically for great cooling. The Sapira Chill comes in three firmness levels— soft (4), medium-firm (6), or firm (8). Bear in mind, if you opt for the Sapira Chill, you’ll need to accept a lower overall performance score.

The Sapira mattress has an active feel with moderate levels of sinkage and very high levels of bounce. This bounce can be great for couples and still maintains low levels of motion transfer.

Despite the fact that the Sapira comes in the Chill version (specifically designed for better cooling), I found the cooling performance to still be 10/10 in our tests, even without opting for the Chill version.

The Sapira Hybrid maintains an overall performance score of 9.47, ranking the mattress in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

This mattress is $1,599 for a queen mattress, which is 5% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress. Even so, at $1,599 it’s a fantastic value mattress.

Best For

  • Incredible cooling performance despite dense memory foam
  • Thick, quality memory foam creates fantastic pressure relief
  • Edge support is extremely robust

Considerations

  • Classic memory foam feel also creates low bounce and slow response
  • Lackluster sex performance
  • Price tag is higher than average

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is a 14″ hybrid mattress made up of poly foam, memory foam, and a pocketed coil base. The plush 2.0″ quilted cover is thicker than what you’ll see with the standard Helix Midnight, but it’s also a bit more expensive.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm with a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. This creates a surface that is stable and allows for a high degree of contour that slowly envelops your body.

Regarding cooling, the Midnight Luxe was fantastic—10/10. The mattress we tested came with an advanced GlacioTex cover that contains cooling fibers. This is an upgrade that costs about $200, but is well worth it if you’re looking for next-level cooling.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.43, ranking the mattress in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 25% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress. Opting for the cooling cover does increase the cost up to just slightly above $2K, but you are getting next level cooling performance with the added costs.

Best For

  • Highest performance among latex foam mattresses we’ve tested to date
  • Outstanding cooling performance with breathable natural latex
  • Flippable design with 2 different firmnesses

Considerations

  • Priced significantly higher than the average latex foam mattress
  • Very minimal sinkage, may not be great for all side sleepers
  • Sex score is below average with only moderate bounce

Our Verdict

The Zenhaven mattress is a 10″ latex foam mattress with a flippable design. It uses natural latex for both comfort material and support material, with quilted covers on both sides of the mattress.

One side has a slightly firm feel (Gentle Firm) and a firmness of 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The opposite side has a medium feel (Luxury Firm) and a firmness of 5 out of 10.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. It offers that classic latex feel and doesn’t include any coils.

Latex is fantastic for cooling due to its natural ability to distribute heat as well as the Zenhaven’s specific aerated latex design. Allowing air to flow through materials more easily is the best option for reaching peak cooling performance.

Regarding overall performance, the Zenhaven is the top-scoring latex mattress we’ve tested to date, with a score of 9.38, ranking within the top 2% of all mattresses tested and among the top 1%, exclusively looking at latex foam mattresses.

That being said, the price is also higher—$3,049 for a queen mattress, which is 89% more expensive than the average latex foam mattress. But the higher performance may help justify the higher price for some sleepers.

  • Exceptional cooling performance, latex resists heat retention
  • Extremely fast material response time
  • Low levels of motion transfer, 37% less than average

Considerations

  • Extremely high bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Edge support while seated is a bit lacking (4.5″) compared to average (3.95″)
  • Shorter 100-night trial period, 77 nights shorter than average

Our Verdict

The Birch is an 11″ latex hybrid, made of GOLS-certified organic latex and an organic cotton cover. Unlike the Zenhaven, which uses dual latex layers, the Birch has a pocketed coil support base.

This mattress comes in a single firmness—7 out of 10, which gives it a slightly firm feel. For a softer feel, check out the Birch Luxe, which shares many similarities with the Birch, but has a thicker, softer cover for a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10).

The Birch has moderate sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. Latex, as a natural material, tends to be bouncier, firmer, and more responsive than other foam types. It is also typically formed with aeration holes, which is fantastic for cooling and overall breathability.

What makes the Birch great for cooling is the use of aerated latex and pocketed coil support. These two materials provide great airflow to the mattress and help to prevent heat buildup.

In our performance tests, the Birch had an overall score of 9.35, ranking the mattress in the top 3% of all mattresses we’ve tested (over 360+ mattresses tested).

This mattress is $1,499 for a queen, which is 22% less than the average latex hybrid mattress. Considering the high performance, the value of the Birch mattress is exceptional.

Best For

  • Fantastic cooling performance with phase change cover
  • Great edge support, only 3″ of sinkage when seated (24% less sinkage than average)
  • Excellent pressure relief—5″ of comfort material

Considerations

  • High bounce is great for sex, but could still be a bit much for some sleepers
  • Higher levels of motion transfer—15% more motion than average
  • 14″ thickness may not be right for low-profile aesthetics

Our Verdict

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid made of memory foam, transitional poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It is topped with a 2.0″ quilted cover that gives the mattress a more luxurious feel.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is available in three firmness levels—Soft (we estimate it to be closer to a Medium, 5 out of 10), Medium (6 out of 10), or Firm (estimated to be closer to a Slightly Firm, 7 out of 10). This range makes it a solid pick for a wider range of sleepers, regardless of your sleeping position.

In our tests of the Medium version, this mattress had very deep sinkage and high levels of bounce. The coils give the mattress a feel that is active and engaging, while the 5.0″ comfort layer promotes pressure relief.

This mattress had great cooling performance as is, but also has the option to upgrade to a more advanced cooling cover. The advanced cover is Celliant-infused and designed capture and convert body heat into FIR energy (far-infrared). The pocketed coil base also helps with limiting heat retention and increasing breathability.

In our performance tests, the Bear Elite earned an overall score of 9.26, ranking the mattress in the top 6% of all mattresses tested to date.

When we look at prices, the cost of the Bear Elite is 4% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress. That being said, you’re also getting a significantly higher-performing mattress, with exceptional cooling, a 14″ thick profile, and three firmnesses to choose from. For a great value, the Bear Elite is a solid pick.

Best For

  • Side sleepers who want an extra soft feel (3.5 out of 10)
  • Fantastic cooling performance, especially for a memory foam comfort layer
  • Excellent pressure relief with 5.0″ of comfort material

Considerations

  • Low bounce isn’t great for sex performance
  • Motion transfer is worse than average
  • Creates lots of hug and lots of contour. You’ll really need to prefer the feel of memory foam.

Our Verdict

The Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, a transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil support base. There is also a cooling cover that really helps this soft mattress stay cool.

It comes in a single firmness, 3.5 out of 10, and has an extra soft feel. For a hybrid with a firmer feel, you may want to opt for the AS3 Hybrid, which has a medium feel (5 out of 10) and earns a cooling score of 9 out of 10.

The AS5 mattress has moderate sinkage and moderate bounce, just slightly more than average.

Despite the soft feel and memory foam design, the AS5 really excels in cooling performance. It uses Amerisleep’s “Refresh” cover, which doesn’t explicitly say it is “phase change” fabric, but it does feel that way. The matttress is cool and breathable, while retaining a classic memory foam feel.

During our tests, the AS5 earned an overall performance score of 9.24, ranking the mattress in the top 8% of mattresses tested to date.

The AS5 Hybrid does cost a bit more than average, $2,149 for a queen, which is 40% more than the average memory foam hybrid mattress. But it also meets a more targeted sleeper, having that extra soft feel. If you’re specifically looking for something this soft, there are no other memory foam hybrids we’ve tested that perform better than the AS5 while still maintaining exceptional cooling performance.

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a 13.25″ hybrid mattress made of poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It has a quilted cover and solid performance across the board.

It is available in three firmness levels—soft (4), medium-firm (6), and firm (8). In our tests, we tested the Medium-Firm version.

The Aurora Luxe has moderate sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. This gives the mattress a balanced feel, ideal for sleepers of any sleeping position.

For cooling, the Aurora Luxe is a great choice because of the hybrid design and the cooling cover. It has a “cool to the touch” feel, which really elevates the mattress and improves overall cooling performance.

In our performance tests, the Aurora Luxe Hybrid has an overall score of 9.24, ranking the Aurora among the top 8% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Auroa Luxe costs $1,398 for a queen mattress, which is 8% less than the average hybrid mattress cost. For a hybrid mattress with great cooling and a value-packed price, the Aurora Luxe is a fantastic option.
