Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Mattress for Cooling list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best mattresses for cooling we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have exceptional cooling (earning a 10 out of 10 in our cooling test).

When selecting the best mattress for cooling, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, cooling performance, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to have an overall score of 9.23 or higher.
  • Had to have a cooling score of 10 out of 10.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
  • Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top 2 picks by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more.

Outliers that met the criteria above, but were still excluded for other various reasons are listed below.

What Gives A Mattress Good Cooling?

A cooling mattress generally has a design and/or one or more materials that are specifically advantageous for limiting heat retention, increasing airflow / breathability, and keeping the sleeping surface cool.

There are a number of material and design approaches we’ve seen over the years, but here are just a few of the highlights.

Gel Foam

Copper Foam

Graphite Foam

Convoluted Foam

Perforated Foam

Open Grid Polymer

Hybrid Design

Phase Change Spray

Cooling Cover

Each of these design strategies is aimed at improving cooling performance. While our scoring tests do not give any extra bonus points for these features, they are a contributing factor to each mattress’s overall cooling score.

Best For

  • High-quality materials
  • Deep-contouring pillowtop, while maintaining support
  • Sleepers of all body types and sleeper weights (up to 300 lbs.)

Considerations

  • Deep sinkage (2.38″) may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Returns are free, but exchanges cost $49
  • Moderate bounce is good for sex, but not great

Our Verdict

The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress made of gel foam, poly foam, support foam, and a pocketed coil base. It is 14″ thick and is the highest-performing mattress we’ve tested to date.

Winkbed has deep sinkage with moderate levels of bounce, a balanced feel with a good degree of contour, especially beneficial for side sleepers.

This mattress comes in three firmness levels softer (4), luxury firm (6), and firmer (7), where 10 is the most firm. The performance data below is from the Luxury Firm version. For sleepers over 250 lbs., there is the Winkbed Plus, a 14.5″ plus-sized mattress with a 5.5″ comfort layer and great performance for heavier bodies.

In our performance tests, the Winkbed scores a 9.82 for overall performance. This makes it the #1 best mattress tested to date (over 300+ mattresses considered).

A queen-sized mattress is $1,499, 7% more than the average hybrid mattress ($1,401) but a rather small price to pay for the significantly better performance. For an amazing value, Winkbed is the mattress to beat across the board.

  • Plush euro-top cover & great cooling performance
  • Exceptional edge support, 25% less sinkage when seated at the edge
  • Ships uncompressed, includes in-home delivery, setup, & old mattress removal

Considerations

  • Extremely high bounce, 53% more bounce than the average mattress
  • Deep sinkage, may not be great for all sleepers
  • Priced at $1795, the Saatva is 31% more expensive than the average mattress

Our Verdict

The Saatva Classic is a coil mattress that is offered either at 11.5″ thick or 14.5″ thick. The mattress is built with a coil-on-coil design, topped with a plush Euro pillow top and organic cotton cover.

This mattress has a deep level of sinkage and an extremely high level of bounce. The coil-on-coil design enhances the bounce and gives this mattress an extremely active feel. These coils are also a big contributing factor to the exceptional cooling performance.

The Saatva is available in three firmness levels—Plush Soft (4), Luxury Firm (6), or Firm (8), where 10 is the most firm.

In our tests, the Saatva earned an overall score of 9.74, the #2 best mattress tested to date. It’s exceptional performance is unmatched by any mattress except for the Winkbed.

A Saatva Classic is $1,795 for a queen mattress, 30% more expensive than the average mattress, but you’re also getting a mattress that performs significantly above the average score (8.54). For fantastic cooling and an active feel, the Saatva Classic checks all the boxes.

Best For

  • Exceptionally good cooling with zero level of heat retention
  • Low levels of motion transfer, 37% less than average
  • Fantastic pressure relief with 4.0″ comfort layer and moderate sinkage

Considerations

  • Lacks edge support when seated directly at the edge of the mattress
  • Very high bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Shorter 100-night trial period (77 nights less than average)

Our Verdict

The Leesa Sapira is an 11″ hybrid made of poly foam, memory foam, transitional support foam, and a pocketed coil base. It has a thin cotton cover and 4.0″ of comfort material.

The mattress has an active feel with moderate levels of sinkage and very high levels of bounce. This bounce can be great for couples and still maintains low levels of motion transfer.

The Leesa Sapira is available in one firmness—medium-firm, a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. For something that is softer or firmer, you may want to consider the Sapira Chill. This mattress is also named Sapira, but has other special features designed specifically for great cooling. The Sapira Chill comes in three firmness levels— soft (4), medium-firm (6), or firm (8). Bear in mind, if you opt for the Sapira Chill, you’ll need to accept the lower overall performance score of 9.09.

The Sapira Hybrid maintains an overall performance score of 9.50, ranking the mattress in the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date.

This mattress is $1,599 for a queen mattress, 14% more than the average hybrid mattress, but not unreasonably high, given the better performance.

  • Exceptional cooling performance, hole-punched latex layers are a big contributor
  • Extremely fast material response time
  • Low levels of motion transfer, 38% less than average

Considerations

  • Extremely high bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Edge support while seated is a bit lacking (4.5″) compared to average (4.04″)
  • Shorter 100-night trial period, 77 nights shorter than average

Our Verdict

The Birch is an 11″ latex hybrid, the first latex mattress to be featured in this guide. This mattress is made of GOLS-certified organic latex, pocketed coils at the base, and an organic cotton cover on top.

The Birch has moderate sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. Latex, as a natural material, tends to be bouncier, firmer, and more responsive than other foam types. It is also typically hole-punched, which is fantastic for cooling and overall breathability.

This mattress comes in a single firmness—7 out of 10, which gives it a slightly firm feel. For a softer feel, check out the Birch Luxe, which shares many similarities with the Birch, but has a thicker softer cover for a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10).

In our performance tests, the Birch had an overall score of 9.44, ranking the mattress in the top 2% of all mattresses we’ve tested (over 300+ mattresses tested).

This mattress is $1,499 for a queen, just slightly less than the average price for a latex hybrid ($1,548). Considering the high performance, the value of the Birch mattress is exceptional.

  • Incredibly fast material response time
  • Great pressure relief for an 11″ thick mattress

Considerations

  • Deep sinkage may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • High bounce, 24% higher than average
  • 120-night trial period is slightly shorter than the 177-night average trial

Our Verdict

The Nolah Natural is an 11″ latex hybrid with a natural latex comfort layer and a pocketed coil base. It has 3.0″ of natural latex and is topped with an organic cotton cover.

This mattress has deep sinkage and high levels of bounce. Despite the deeper sinkage, the Nolah still maintains a more generalized contour, compared to other foam-topped mattresses.

The Nolah is available in one firmness, 5 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium feel. A firmness of this level would be suitable for a wide variety of sleepers with different body weights and sleeping positions.

In our tests, this mattress earned an overall performance score of 9.42, ranking the Nolah within the top 3% of all mattresses tested to date.

For a queen mattress, the Nolah Natural costs $1,365, 12% less than the average latex hybrid mattress. If you’re specifically looking for a latex mattress with great cooling, the Nolah is a solid option to consider.

Considerations

  • Costs 23% more than the average mattress
  • 120-night trial period is notably shorter than the average 177-night trial period

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a 13.25″ hybrid mattress made of poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It has a quilted cover and solid performance across the board.

The Aurora Luxe has moderate sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. This gives the mattress a balanced feel, ideal for sleepers of any sleeping position.

It is available in three firmness levels—soft (4), medium-firm (6), and firm (8).

In our performance tests, the Aurora Luxe Hybrid has an overall score of 9.33, ranking the Aurora among the top 5% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking specifically at hybrids, the Aurora Luxe is within the top 5 mattresses.

The Auroa Luxe costs $1699 for a queen mattress, which is 23% more than the average mattress cost. But given the higher performance and three available firmnesses, there are many advantages to this mattress.

Best For

  • Side sleepers who want an extra soft feel (3.5 out of 10)
  • Fantastic cooling performance, especially for a memory foam comfort layer
  • Excellent pressure relief with 5.0″ of comfort material

Considerations

  • Low levels of bounce may not be ideal for couples or sex performance
  • Motion transfer is worse than average
  • Creates lots of hug and lots of contour. You’ll really need to prefer the feel of memory foam.

Our Verdict

The Amerisleep AS5 is a 14″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, a transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil support base. There is also a cooling cover that really helps this soft mattress stay cool.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and moderate bounce, just slightly more than average.

It comes in a single firmness, 3.5 out of 10, and has a very soft feel. For a hybrid with a firmer feel, you may want to opt for the AS3 Hybrid which has a medium feel (5 out of 10) and earns a cooling score of 9 out of 10.

During our tests, the AS5 earned an overall performance score of 9.24, ranking the mattress in the top 9% of mattresses tested to date. If we look exclusively at memory foam hybrids, that rank rises up to the top 7%.

The AS5 does cost a bit more than average, $2,149 for a queen, which is $637 more than the average memory foam hybrid mattress. But it also meets a more targeted sleeper, having that extra soft feel. If you’re specifically looking for something this soft, there are no other memory foam hybrids we’ve tested that perform better than the AS5 while still maintaining exceptional cooling performance.

Considerations

  • High levels of bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Slower material response (1.7 seconds for full recovery, the average is 0.9 seconds)
  • Edge support, while seated, is a little lacking

Our Verdict

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid made of copper memory foam, transitional poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. It is topped with a 2.0″ quilted cover that gives the mattress a more luxurious feel.

It has moderate levels of sinkage and high levels of bounce. The coils give the mattress a feel that is active and engaging while the 5.0″ comfort layer promotes pressure relief.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is available in three firmness levels—soft (4.5), medium-firm (6), or slightly firm (7.5). This range makes it a solid pick for a wider range of sleepers, regardless of your sleeping position.

In our performance tests, the Bear Elite earned an overall score of 9.24, ranking the mattress in the top 9% of all mattresses tested to date. For reference, the average performance score of all mattresses tested to date is 8.54.

  • Fantastic pressure relief with thick 16″ profile
  • Side sleepers who enjoy deeper sinkage and contour

Considerations

  • Motion transfer levels are 16% higher than average
  • Very deep sinkage may be too much for some back or stomach sleepers
  • $2999 for a queen, over 2X the price of the average hybrid we’ve tested to date ($1,401)

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight Elite mattress is a 16″ hybrid mattress with a robust comfort layer of poly foam, pocketed microcoils, and transitional support foam. It is backed by a support layer of pocketed coils and a thin 1.0″ support foam and topped with a 1.5″ quilted cover.

This mattress has a luxurious feel with very deep sinkage and a moderate degree of bounce. It can be a fantastic option for side sleepers who are looking for a more dramatic level of contour and hug, while still having great cooling.

The Midnight Elite comes in a single firmness, a medium 5.5 out of 10 where 10 is the most firm, making it a good option for all body types and sleeping positions.

In our performance tests, the Midnight Elite earned an overall score of 9.23, ranking it in the top 11% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking specifically at hybrid mattresses, this mattress scores even higher—in the top 7%.

That being said, the price of the Helix Midnight Elite is $2999 for a queen. This is over 2X the cost of the average hybrid, costing sleepers an extra $1,598. But if you’re specifically looking for a high-profile mattress with deep sinkage and fantastic cooling, the Midnight Elite is a great performer, worth considering if you can foot the bill.
