Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

For our Best Mattress for Cooling list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic driven scoring.
Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).
Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.
Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.
In choosing the best mattresses for cooling we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.
In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have exceptional cooling (earning a 10 out of 10 in our cooling test).
When selecting the best mattress for cooling, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, cooling performance, and US availability.
To be included within this list all mattresses:
- Had to have an overall score of 9.23 or higher.
- Had to have a cooling score of 10 out of 10.
- Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
- Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top 2 picks by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more.
Outliers that met the criteria above, but were still excluded for other various reasons are listed below.
Mattress | Score | Reason |
---|---|---|
Winkbed Plus | 9.37 | Primarily designed for plus-sized sleepers |
Diamond Flurry Lux | 9.32 | Brand is not widely known by sleepers |
Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid | 9.24 | Brand duplicate; performance does not beat that of the Saatva Classic |
What Gives A Mattress Good Cooling?
A cooling mattress generally has a design and/or one or more materials that are specifically advantageous for limiting heat retention, increasing airflow / breathability, and keeping the sleeping surface cool.
There are a number of material and design approaches we’ve seen over the years, but here are just a few of the highlights.
Each of these design strategies is aimed at improving cooling performance. While our scoring tests do not give any extra bonus points for these features, they are a contributing factor to each mattress’s overall cooling score.

Winkbed Mattress

Best For
- High-quality materials
- Deep-contouring pillowtop, while maintaining support
- Sleepers of all body types and sleeper weights (up to 300 lbs.)
Considerations
- Deep sinkage (2.38″) may not be ideal for all sleepers
- Returns are free, but exchanges cost $49
- Moderate bounce is good for sex, but not great
Our Verdict
The WinkBed is a hybrid mattress made of gel foam, poly foam, support foam, and a pocketed coil base. It is 14″ thick and is the highest-performing mattress we’ve tested to date.
Winkbed has deep sinkage with moderate levels of bounce, a balanced feel with a good degree of contour, especially beneficial for side sleepers.
This mattress comes in three firmness levels softer (4), luxury firm (6), and firmer (7), where 10 is the most firm. The performance data below is from the Luxury Firm version. For sleepers over 250 lbs., there is the Winkbed Plus, a 14.5″ plus-sized mattress with a 5.5″ comfort layer and great performance for heavier bodies.
In our performance tests, the Winkbed scores a 9.82 for overall performance. This makes it the #1 best mattress tested to date (over 300+ mattresses considered).
A queen-sized mattress is $1,499, 7% more than the average hybrid mattress ($1,401) but a rather small price to pay for the significantly better performance. For an amazing value, Winkbed is the mattress to beat across the board.

Leesa Sapira

Best For
- Exceptionally good cooling with zero level of heat retention
- Low levels of motion transfer, 37% less than average
- Fantastic pressure relief with 4.0″ comfort layer and moderate sinkage
Considerations
- Lacks edge support when seated directly at the edge of the mattress
- Very high bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
- Shorter 100-night trial period (77 nights less than average)
Our Verdict
The Leesa Sapira is an 11″ hybrid made of poly foam, memory foam, transitional support foam, and a pocketed coil base. It has a thin cotton cover and 4.0″ of comfort material.
The mattress has an active feel with moderate levels of sinkage and very high levels of bounce. This bounce can be great for couples and still maintains low levels of motion transfer.
The Leesa Sapira is available in one firmness—medium-firm, a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. For something that is softer or firmer, you may want to consider the Sapira Chill. This mattress is also named Sapira, but has other special features designed specifically for great cooling. The Sapira Chill comes in three firmness levels— soft (4), medium-firm (6), or firm (8). Bear in mind, if you opt for the Sapira Chill, you’ll need to accept the lower overall performance score of 9.09.
The Sapira Hybrid maintains an overall performance score of 9.50, ranking the mattress in the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date.
This mattress is $1,599 for a queen mattress, 14% more than the average hybrid mattress, but not unreasonably high, given the better performance.

Birch Latex Hybrid

Best For
- Exceptional cooling performance, hole-punched latex layers are a big contributor
- Extremely fast material response time
- Low levels of motion transfer, 38% less than average
Considerations
- Extremely high bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
- Edge support while seated is a bit lacking (4.5″) compared to average (4.04″)
- Shorter 100-night trial period, 77 nights shorter than average
Our Verdict
The Birch is an 11″ latex hybrid, the first latex mattress to be featured in this guide. This mattress is made of GOLS-certified organic latex, pocketed coils at the base, and an organic cotton cover on top.
The Birch has moderate sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. Latex, as a natural material, tends to be bouncier, firmer, and more responsive than other foam types. It is also typically hole-punched, which is fantastic for cooling and overall breathability.
This mattress comes in a single firmness—7 out of 10, which gives it a slightly firm feel. For a softer feel, check out the Birch Luxe, which shares many similarities with the Birch, but has a thicker softer cover for a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10).
In our performance tests, the Birch had an overall score of 9.44, ranking the mattress in the top 2% of all mattresses we’ve tested (over 300+ mattresses tested).
This mattress is $1,499 for a queen, just slightly less than the average price for a latex hybrid ($1,548). Considering the high performance, the value of the Birch mattress is exceptional.

Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid

Best For
- Side sleepers who want an extra soft feel (3.5 out of 10)
- Fantastic cooling performance, especially for a memory foam comfort layer
- Excellent pressure relief with 5.0″ of comfort material
Considerations
- Low levels of bounce may not be ideal for couples or sex performance
- Motion transfer is worse than average
- Creates lots of hug and lots of contour. You’ll really need to prefer the feel of memory foam.
Our Verdict
The Amerisleep AS5 is a 14″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, a transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil support base. There is also a cooling cover that really helps this soft mattress stay cool.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and moderate bounce, just slightly more than average.
It comes in a single firmness, 3.5 out of 10, and has a very soft feel. For a hybrid with a firmer feel, you may want to opt for the AS3 Hybrid which has a medium feel (5 out of 10) and earns a cooling score of 9 out of 10.
During our tests, the AS5 earned an overall performance score of 9.24, ranking the mattress in the top 9% of mattresses tested to date. If we look exclusively at memory foam hybrids, that rank rises up to the top 7%.

If you’re specifically looking for something this soft, there are no other memory foam hybrids we’ve tested that perform better than the AS5 while still maintaining exceptional cooling performance.

Our Verdict
The Helix Midnight Elite mattress is a 16″ hybrid mattress with a robust comfort layer of poly foam, pocketed microcoils, and transitional support foam. It is backed by a support layer of pocketed coils and a thin 1.0″ support foam and topped with a 1.5″ quilted cover.
