Best For
- Exceptional pressure relief with 14″ thick profile
- Fast material response time
- Excellent edge support when lying down
Considerations
- Edge support struggles with 4.75″ of sinkage when seated directly at the edge
- Long off-gassing of 24 days
Our Verdict
The Puffy Royal mattress is a 14″ hybrid mattress made of gel memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil support layer.
This mattress is has deep sinkage and low levels of bounce.
It is available in a single firmness, 5 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium feel.
In our performance tests, the Puffy Royal had an overall performance score of 8.53, which is just slightly below the average performance level.
This mattress is $2399 for a queen, 50% more than the average memory foam hybrid. Given it’s lower than average performance, the high price tag certainly doesn’t do the Puffy Royal Hybrid any favors.
The Puffy Royal struggles in the same areas that may memory foam mattresses struggle, namely sex, edge support, and off-gassing. Even so, the comfort dynamic and pressure relief is incredible. For those who love the feel of memory foam and don’t mind the typical memory foam shortcomings, the Puffy can still make for a great pick.

How is Puffy Royal Different?
The Puffy Royal Hybrid has an overall performance that is slightly lower than average and a price tag that is 50% more than the average memory foam hybrid mattress. As you can imagine, lower performance and higher price is certainly not the balance we like to see from any mattress.
Advantages
That being said, there are still some advantages to the Puffy Royal worth noting. The Puffy Royal has better cooling than average, fast material response time, and excellent lying support. In addition, pressure relief is incredible. During our tests, I found the mattress an absolute delight to lie on.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has deep sinkage and low levels of bounce.
Disadvantages
Some disadvantages of the Royal Hybrid include higher levels of motion transfer, poorer edge support, and a struggling sex score. The lower sex score is largely due to lower levels of bounce and the lack of edge support.

Cooling Test
Cooling performance on the Puffy Royal Hybrid was excellent. During our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
80.0° F
Max Temp.
90.7° F
Ending Temp.
81.7° F
The mattress does a fantastic job of releasing heat and keeping the surface of the mattress cooler. The Puffy Royal has a classic hybrid memory foam design.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
The mattress uses a thick 7.0” comfort layer built of poly and memory foam on top of a pocketed coil base. Unlike more traditional memory foams, which can be heat reactive (IE, harder when it’s cold and softer when they are warm), the foams use a modern formulation.
As a result, they don’t get softer or harder based on temperature. In addition, the gel-infused formulation reduces heat retention.
The mattress uses a cover knitted with cooling yarns that help provide a cooler feel. Lastly, we of course have the hybrid design itself.
Using a pocketed coil support layer reduces the quantity of material heat can be easily retained within and also provides increased breathability for the mattress.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When I consider my subjective experience, objective data, and material analysis, I am confident that most sleepers will find the Puffy Royal hybrid to be sufficiently cool.
Sinkage Test
The Puffy Royal has a deep level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.38”.
Sinkage Depth
2.38″
Sinkage Feel
Deep
The mattress creates a dramatic and exacting body-contouring hug. Unlike traditional memory foam, which can be harder to move around on and prevent sleepers from changing positions, the Puffy Royal remains more responsive and easy to move on.
This is due to the modern memory foam formulation. In essence, it creates the hug and body contouring that sleepers love from memory foam while minimizing the negatives of excessive hug and a “stuck” feeling.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The Royal also has a deeper level of sinkage around the heavier parts of the body. Notably, it doesn’t have the “sharp” body contour that more old school memory foam mattresses have.
Even so, there is still lots of hug in this mattress as the materials wrap around the body.
Motion Transfer Test
The Puffy Royal has a moderate level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 10.25 m/s². This is 18% more motion transfer than the average of 8.71 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
4.48 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-5.77 m/s²
Accel. Range
10.25 m/s²
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion spikes from 0 to 0.15 seconds. Motion drops off significantly immediately thereafter and by 0.58 seconds we are back at near-zero levels.
Mattresses with the lowest motion are able to return to near-zero energy levels within 0.3 seconds. Needless to say, Puffy Royal is a good bit worse than that, but it’s not bad by any stretch.

The thick 7.0” comfort layer absorbs the bulk of the energy such that most sleepers will find only the immediate energy spike to be noticeable.
While I do wish the motion intensity was more restrained, I was very pleased that the vast majority of energy was dissipated by 0.22 seconds. I don’t expect motion transfer will be a major issue for most sleepers.
Response Test
The Puffy Royal has a very fast material response time. During our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.2 seconds, which is 0.21 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Complete Recovery
1.0 sec.
During our fully recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.0 seconds, which is 0.10 seconds slower than the average of 0.90 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
While these material responsiveness speeds are far from instant, they aren’t slow. Sleepers who are hypersensitive to slower-responding mattress materials could find this level of recovery speed to be problematic.
However, it is still considerably faster than more traditional memory foam, which can take 3-5 seconds to fully recover.
Bounce Test
The Puffy Royal Hybrid has a low level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 7.57”. This is 2.11” less bounce than the average of 9.68”.
Max. Depth
5.33″
Max. Rebound
2.24″
Total Bounce
7.57″
Mattresses with super thick comfort layers tend to absorb more of the bounce energy. In addition, mattresses that utilize memory foam also absorb more bounce energy.
Puffy has both of those attributes, with a 7.0” comfort layer (average is 4.1”) and thick layers of memory foam. As a result, the lower bounce was unsurprising.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
A lower bounce negatively impacts sex performance and can also make it more difficult to move around on the mattress.
If you find it difficult to move on thicker foam mattresses, memory foam, or if you have slept on more traditional coil mattresses most of your life you may find the Puffy Royal just doesn’t have enough bounce for your preferences.
Edge Support Test
The Puffy Royal is a mixed bag for edge support. Sitting edge support was fair, but lying edge support was excellent.
During our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.75”. This is 0.71” more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.04”.
Max Sinkage
4.75″
Lying Support
Excellent
The mattress is so incredibly thick at 14” that even with 4.75″ of compression there isn’t a collapse of materials. Even so, edge sinkage above 4.0” is more than I like to see. Some sleepers, especially with heavier weighted bodies, will not feel well supported sitting on the edge.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While sitting edge support left something to be desired, lying edge support was excellent. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions while lying directly on the edge of the mattress.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The mattress uses an edge support foam that wraps around the entire perimeter. This foam is 3” wide and 6” tall.
It seems to clearly have a sizable impact on lying edge support performance, though it doesn’t feel quite robust enough to dramatically impact sitting edge sinkage.
Sex Test
The Puffy Royal has a fair level of sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal, pressure relief is outstanding, and cooling is excellent. These factors ensure the mattress is comfortable for a dance without pants.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 7.0 | Moderate |
Edge Support | 20% | 7.8 | Fair |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
However, both bounce and edge support leave much to be desired. These two factors are critical for great amorous activity, as they ensure the mattress works with you and extends the sexable surface of the mattress.
With only 7.57” of bounce the mattress is simply more strenuous and difficult to have sex on. In addition, the 6.0” of sitting edge sinkage is simply going to be too deep.

Unfortunately, memory foam and memory foam hybrids often struggle with sex, as the foams absorb so much energy. We see that playing out here with the Puffy Royal, as bounce is reduced well below ideal levels for amorous activity.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on the Puffy Royal was outstanding. During our tests, I felt no significant level of pressure point build-up anywhere on my body.
Comfort Layer
7.0″
Support Layer
7.0″
The mattress has a robust 14” total profile with a super thick 7.0” comfort layer. Based on all of our tests to date, on average the comfort layer is 4.1”.
With 4 individual layers and 7.0” of comfort foams the Puffy Royal is able to create a luxury feel that relieves pressure, contours to the body, and comforts sleepers.
Even heavier-weight sleepers will likely find that the total mattress thickness and comfort layer thickness create enough pressure relief. Overall, I was pleased with the level of pressure relief performance.

Compared to the average off-gassing duration (7 days), the Puffy Royal off-gasses 3.4X slower than the average.
Company
Puffy offers a 101-night trial period and a lifetime warranty. Shipping and returns are both free as well.

Compared to the average company, the Puffy trial is shorter than average (average is 173 nights), but the warranty is longer.
Among all mattresses tested, 24% have lifetime warranties and the average of the other 76% of mattresses is 13 years.
How firm is Puffy Royal?
The Puffy Royal has a medium feel, 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

This firmness would be suitable for a wide range of sleepers but may exclude heavier sleepers, especially those who sleep on their back or stomach.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Puffy Royal Hybrid was excellent. During our tests, I felt fully supported in all sleeping positions.
The mattress checks all of the boxes I look for. We have a thicker-than-average total profile height of 14.0” (average is 12.0”) and a thicker-than-average 7.0” comfort layer (average is 4.1”).

The support layer is a little south of the average at 7.0” (the average is 7.9”).
Nevertheless, the combination of 6 layers of foam and coils creates plenty of support, while also ensuring pressure points are avoided.

Given the material quality, design, and thickness, I expect light and heavier-weighted sleepers alike will find the mattress to be fully supportive. Overall, I’m pleased with the level of support performance.

The Cover
The cover of the Puffy Ryoal is a thin quilted cover with cooling yarns knit into the layer. It is filled with blended wool, heat-resistant fibers, and a 1.0″ foam insulated with cooling gel.

Olnder versions of the Puffy Royal cover had a zipper and were removable, but the present-day version does not have a zipper and is meant to stay fixed atop the mattress.
The Comfort Layer
Below the quilted cover, the comfort layer includes three layers of foam. There is a 2.0″ gel memory foam, a 1.0″ poly foam, and a 2.5″/ 3.0″ zoned support foam.
The support foam is channel-cut with a 5-zone hexagon pattern. Different zones provide a different level of support depending on where it is located.

The Support Layer
The support layer is 6.0″ pocketed coil unit followed by a 1.0″ high-density support foam. A reinforced edge foam runs along the perimeter for improved edge support.

It is 3” wide and 6” high, designed to create better edge support for both sitting and lying, while also reducing noise from the coil unit.
Product Evolution
The Puffy Royal mattress was first launched in June 2020 as an all-foam mattress. Since its release, the biggest change has been the shift from an all-foam mattress to a hybrid mattress which took place in July 2022.
While some of the foams remained the same, the overall feel and design of the mattress were drastically different. In February 2024, the Royal got another set of updates. Portions of the poly foam comfort layer was swapped out for layers of memory foam.
It still has a medium firmness, but the 2024 offers better performance.

In addition, the 2024 updates to the Puffy Royal also updated the fire barrier. Previously, the fire barrier contained fiberglass to protect against fires. As of February 2024, the Royal no longer contains fiberglass. Instead, Puffy uses wool and viscose fiber for the fire barrier.

The Puffy Royal was an all-foam mattress that preceded the Puffy Royal Hybrid with its initial release happening in 2020. In 2022, coils were added and the Puffy Royal became the Puffy Royal Hybrid. As of September 2023, the all-foam Puffy Royal is not available.
The Puffy Royal Hybrid is 14″ thick and has great pressure relief. The thicker profile is also probably related to the poorer edge support when seated directly at the edge of the mattress.
