Best For

  • Exceptional pressure relief with a 2.5″ quilted cover and 6″ of additional comfort materials
  • Excellent edge support with just 2.5″ of sitting sinkage
  • Sleepers who want a luxurious pressure relief feel

Considerations

  • It’s fairly expensive at $3.3K for a Queen
  • Very slow material response time
  • Long off-gassing—over 2X longer than average

Our Verdict

The Puffy Monarch mattress is a high-profile luxury hybrid mattress with a 16″ thickness made of memory foam, poly foam, pocketed coils, and support foam. The mattress is topped with a 2.5″ quilted cover and is designed with a luxury feel in mind.

The Monarch has very deep sinkage and very low levels of bounce. You will want to make sure that you like this type of comfort dynamic in order to be comfortable on the Monarch.

It is available in a single firmness, 5 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium feel.

In our performance test, the Monarch had an overall score of 8.10. This is notably below the average performance score of 8.58.

Given the significantly higher price point ($3299 for a queen), I was really hoping to see higher performance from this mattress to justify the price point. There is no question that the Monarch has an amazingly comfortable feel with outstanding pressure relief.

However, the low bounce creates mediocre sex performance, the slow response makes it more difficult to move around on, and there is a strong smell for 18 days. To be happy with the Monarch you’ll need to be okay with these negatives, while also loving the comfort dynamic that the mattress provides.

How is Puffy Monarch Different?

The Puffy Monarch is a high-priced luxury hybrid with lower overall performance than average and a price tag that is significantly higher than the average hybrid mattress.

Advantages

Advantages of the Monarch include excellent lying edge support and a super thick comfort layer, which leads to better pressure relief score. Sitting edge support was even better with only 2.50″ of edge compression, an exceptionally low measurement.

The mattress is also backed by a lifetime warranty.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has very deep levels of sinkage and very low levels of bounce. Despite containing latex, poly foams, and pocketed coils this mattress performs more like a traditional memory foam mattress in terms of feel.

Disadvantages

The Monarch also has a very slow material response time. Cooling performance is worse than average, motion transfer levels are higher than average.

Cooling Test

The Puffy Monarch has a good level of cooling performance but fails to rise to the “excellent” or “outstanding” level. During our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

77.2° F

Max Temp.

91.5° F

Ending Temp.

78.8° F

In our objective temperature testing, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.5° F, which is 1.8° warmer than the average 89.7° F.

Max Temp.

Puffy Monarch Cooling Test After
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

When we look at the material construction it’s not surprising that we see cooling struggle more. We have an incredibly thick 8.5” comfort layer built from memory foam, latex foam, and poly foam.

While some of these layers are beneficial for cooling, including the gel-infused memory foam, latex, wool, and cooling yarn fibers within the cover, these material choices simply aren’t enough to push this mattress to the best levels of cooling.

A thicker foam comfort layer makes it harder for air to travel through the layers, which in turn makes cooling performance more restrained. While the extra thick comfort layer is incredibly beneficial for pressure relief and overall comfort, it is also negatively impacting cooling.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Based on our objective data, my subjective experience, and an assessment of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling performance is good, but also far from great.

Sinkage Test

The Puffy Monarch has a very deep sinkage. During our tests, we measured 2.75” of pressure point sinkage. This is 0.62” more sinkage than the average of 2.13”.

Sinkage Depth

2.75″

Sinkage Feel

Very Deep

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Puffy Monarch Sinkage Test
Puffy Monarch Sinkage Test

The mattress creates more of the classic memory foam feel. There is a very slow material responsiveness and an exacting and dramatic body contouring hug.

Heavier parts of the body will sink deeper into the mattress.

During my tests, my midsection in particular felt notably deeper “in” the mattress than other parts of my body. This is neither good nor bad, but it is a more polarizing feel.

To be comfortable on the Monarch you’ll really need to love the feel of memory foam and also love a more dramatic and deeper body contouring hug.

8.1

Motion Transfer Test

The Puffy Monarch has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured 9.23 m/s². This is 6% more motion transfer than the average of 8.71 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

5.07 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-4.16 m/s²

Accel. Range

9.23 m/s²

The Monarch’s incredibly thick 8.5” comfort foam layer reduces the bulk of energy and motion on the mattress.

In addition, the memory foam layers within the comfort layer in particular are the biggest contributors to reducing motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0 to 0.15 seconds.

Puffy Monarch Motion Transfer Chart
Puffy Monarch Motion Transfer Chart

Motion drops off thereafter and by 1.01 seconds we return to near-zero levels of energy. While I am pleased with the low total motion intensity, I’m not thrilled that the motion takes a full second to fully dissipate.

Given the quantity of foam in the mattress I expected the duration to be far quicker. Even so, I don’t think motion transfer will be a problem for most sleepers.

5.0

Response Test

The Puffy Monarch has a very slow material responsiveness. During our mostly recovered test, we measured a 1.2-second recovery speed, which is 0.79 seconds slower than the average of 0.41 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

1.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

2.4 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

During our fully recovered test, we measured a 2.4-second recovery speed, which is 1.5 seconds slower than the average of 0.90 seconds.

There can be absolutely no sugarcoating it; the Puffy Monarch has an incredibly slow response time.

The specific material choices within the mattress, especially the more traditional memory foam layer, takes significantly longer compared to the average mattress in order to fully recover back to its original shape.

This slow response makes it more difficult to move around on the mattress, change positions, and inhibits sex performance. While the extra thick 8.5” foam comfort layer and memory foam are wonderful for pressure relief, they are greatly impacting responsiveness.

Bounce Test

The Puffy Monarch has a very low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 5.12”. This is 4.54” less bounce than the average of 9.66”.

Max. Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

As in so many other performance areas for the Monarch, the extra thick 8.5” comfort layer is the biggest contributor to the low bounce. All of the foam simply absorbs the bulk of the energy and does not return a significant level of bounce.

The limited bounce is absolutely helping to reduce motion transfer. However, it’s also the primary reason for the weak sex score and greater difficulty in moving around on the mattress.

9.5

Edge Support Test

The Puffy Monarch has an excellent level of edge support. During our sitting edge support tests, we measured 2.50” of sitting sinkage compression. This is 1.51” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.01”.

Lying Support

Outstanding

Even when I was sitting directly on the edge I felt well supported and there was no collapse of materials.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Lying edge support was also impressive. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

The Monarch has many attributes that help to improve edge support, including a 16” total material profile, thick 7.5” support layer, and 6.0” tall and 3.5” wide support foam that encases the entire perimeter of the mattress.

This perimeter support foam is having a sizable impact on overall edge support performance.

7.1

Sex Test

The Puffy Monarch has fair sex performance. On the positive side of things, noise is minimal and both sitting edge support and pressure relief is outstanding.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%5.7Very Low
Edge Support20%10Outstanding
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%10Outstanding
Cooling5%8.0Good

Slightly worse, but still good we have cooling. And finally, we have bounce, or rather a complete lack thereof.

The Monarch has just 5.12” of total bounce height. This is 4.54” less bounce than the average of 9.66”. Ideally, we want to see 10” or more for sex, as bounce at that level creates a robust and engaging amorous activity surface.

Puffy Monarch Edge Sitting
Puffy Monarch Edge Sitting

The Monarch is extremely far from that mark and as a result the dance without pants performance greatly sufferers. The low bounce makes sex more strenuous and difficult.

10

Pressure Relief Test

The Puffy Monarch has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no pressure points anywhere on my body.

Comfort Layer

8.5″

Support Layer

7.5″

Quite to the contrary, the mattress is exceptionally comfortable in all sleeping positions. The Monarch is equipped with 8.5” of comfort foam layers. This is 4.36” more comfort material than the average of 4.14”, based on all of our tests.

All of that extra foam pays huge dividends when it comes to creating pressure relief. In our pressure mapping tests (see below), we measured a max PSI of 1.20. This is incredibly low. A PSI of 2.0 is considered high and none of our 3 tests were anywhere close to that mark on the Puffy Monarch.

All that said, the feel of the mattress is distinctly memory foam, despite the fact that it contains a layer of latex and other poly foam layers.

The mattress creates a dramatic body contouring hug around the body. The memory foam forms closely to the exact shape of your body.

Some will love this feel and others won’t, so you really want to make sure your body is comfortable with this type of pressure relief and comfort dynamic.

While this may not be a huge issue for everyone, sensitive sleepers might want to keep it in mind as long off-gassing can extend the time before you can use the mattress with full bedding.

Compared to the average company, the Puffy trial is shorter than average (average is 173 nights), but the warranty is longer.

Among all mattresses tested, 24% have lifetime warranties and the average of other 76% of mattresses is 13 years.

How firm is Puffy Monarch?

The Puffy Monarch has a firmness of 5 out of 10 with a medium feel.

Firmness Chart 5

This is slightly softer than the most common firmness, 6 out of 10. Given the fantastic support and pressure relief of this mattress, I think many sleepers will find this firmness to be suitable, assuming the deeper sinkage is not an issue.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Puffy Monarch has outstanding support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The Monarch is built with a 7.5” support layer, consisting of a 6.0” pocketed coil unit and a 1.5” support foam on the foundation of the mattress. This is just slightly thinner than the average 7.9” support layer thickness, based on all of our tests.

Puffy Monarch Corner Materials Exposed
Puffy Monarch Corner Materials Exposed

Despite this fact, it didn’t seem to impact support performance to any degree. This is most likely due to the total profile of 16.0”, which is 4.0” thicker than the average total mattress height of 12.0”.

All of these extra material layers create ample support, pressure relief, and comfort for body weights of all sizes. I am exceedingly impressed with the material quality and the totality of this mattress.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

While the response, limited bounce, and less-than-great cooling impact the total score, for those who simply love the feel of memory foam contouring the body and desire an ultra-thick luxury mattress, you may be able to overlook its shortcomings in those other areas. With respect to support, the Puffy Monarch is fantastic.

The Cover

The Puffy Monarch has a plush 2.5″ quilted cover. Cooling yarn is knitted into the cover, which does help with performance.

Puffy Monarch Cover

The layers that make up the plush, lofted cover include a 0.5″ alpaca wool filling, a 0.5″ layer of heat-resistant fibers, 0.5″ memory foam, and a 1.0″ soft poly foam.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer includes three layers of foam. Directly below the cover, we have a 1.0” latex foam. The latex is hole-punched, a process common with latex foams, that helps with breathability and material response time.

There is also a 2.0″ memory foam and 3.0″ poly foam. The poly foam serves as a transitional layer between the comfort material and the support material below.

The Support Layer

The support layer is made up of a 6.0” pocketed coil system followed by a 1.5″ support foam, providing 7.5″ of total support.

Is the Puffy Monarch a good value?

Unfortunately, no, I don’t think the Monarch is a particularly good value. The Puffy Monarch is the highest-priced Puffy mattress currently in their lineup and yet it offers the lowest performance among all Puffy mattress. While the thick 16″ profile does offer some advantages with support and pressure relief, it also has a sex suppressing low level of bounce, slow material response, and longer off-gassing period. For a better-value hybrid, I would recommend the Puffy Lux.

What is the Puffy return policy?

Puffy mattresses offer a 101-night trial period where you can try out the mattress. At any point, you can return the mattress for a full refund with no return shipping charges applied.
