Considerations
- Extremely slow material response time
- Pressure relief really struggles with only 2.0″ of comfort material
- Moderate levels of heat retention and below-average cooling performance
Our Verdict
The Novilla Serenity is a 10″ hybrid with an extremely budget-friendly price. It contains a gel memory foam comfort layer and an 8.0″ coil unit base.
This mattress has minimal sinkage and high levels of bounce.
It is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, with a medium-firm feel.
In our performance tests, the Serenity had an overall score of 7.33, ranking it in the bottom 5% of all mattresses tested to date. It ranks below average in 5 of the 8 performance tests we analyze.
The greatest appeal of the Serenity is the price, and not so much the performance. A queen mattress costs only $359, 74% less than the average hybrid for a savings of over $970. If you’re on an extremely tight budget, but are dead-set on a hybrid, the Serenity is an option. However, for most sleepers we would recommend the similarly priced, but notably better performing Novilla Bliss.

How is Novilla Serenity Different?
The Novilla Serenity has an overall performance level that is below average, but also a price tag that is below average too—74% less than the average hybrid for a savings of over $970.
Advantages
Besides the cost savings, other advantages of the Novilla Serenity include slightly less motion transfer than average, better edge support, and a better sex performance score.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has minimal sinkage and high levels of bounce. Off-gassing is also a bit of a neutral factor as it was identical to the 7-day average.
Disadvantages
The Serenity has worse cooling performance than average, slow material response time, and struggling pressure relief. This mattress has only 2.0″ of material in the comfort layer, which can be a disadvantage for many sleepers, especially heavier sleepers or side sleepers.

Cooling Test
The Novilla Serenity has a fair level of cooling performance. During our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
75.9° F
Max Temp.
90.9° F
Ending Temp.
82.6° F
On the positive side, we have a limited comfort layer, just 2.0” of foam materials. While a thinner comfort layer isn’t great for pressure relief, it does help to keep cooling in check.
Even so, the quality of said materials isn’t especially impressive. In my view, they seem to not breathe particularly well and we end up with more heat being retained within the foam layers.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.9° F, which is 1.2° warmer than the average 89.7° F. Ultimately, this is a very budget-friendly mattress.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

As a result, material quality just isn’t the absolute best and that level of quality appears to be negatively impacting cooling performance.
Based on our objective data, subjective experience, and material analysis, I’m confident in my view that cooling performance is fair at best.
Sinkage Test
The Novilla Serenity has a minimal level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.99”.
Sinkage Depth
1.99″
Sinkage Feel
Minimal
This is 0.15” less sinkage than the average of 2.14”, based on all of our tests to date. The mattress creates a balanced feel with an even body contouring hug.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

It’s not overly enveloping or overly exacting in the way that it wraps around the body. All that said, I’m really not impressed with the comfort dynamic. The materials all feel quite “stiff”.
This feeling resulted in undue pressure relief in our tests and it wasn’t particularly comfortable to lie on. With respect to overall comfort, it was notably worse than the Novilla Bliss.
Motion Transfer Test
The Novilla Serenity has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 8.56 m/s². This is 3% less motion transfer than the average of 8.81 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
4.25 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-4.31 m/s²
Accel. Range
8.56 m/s²
I was quite surprised at just how low motion is. Typically, less expensive mattresses really struggle with motion transfer. While the Serenity’s stiffer top layers don’t do it any favors for pressure relief and comfort, it does seem to be helping motion stay more localized and restrained.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.14 seconds.
We have a smaller secondary spike from 0.43 to 0.65 seconds and by 0.94 seconds we’ve returned to near zero levels of energy.

While motion duration is quite long on this mattress, the motion spikes, both primary and secondary, are very well restrained. Overall, I’m pleased with the level of motion and I don’t expect it will be an issue for most sleepers.
Response Test
The Novilla Serenity has a very slow material response. During our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.9 seconds. This is 0.49 seconds slower than the average of 0.41 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
Mostly Recovered
0.9 sec.
Complete Recovery
1.8 sec.
In our fully recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.8 seconds. This is 0.90 seconds slower than the average of 0.90 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
Ultimately, the memory foam layer within the Serenity is quite slow to recover and rebound back to its original shape.
The Serenity’s mostly recovered response speed puts it in the bottom 5% among all mattresses we’ve tested to date, while the fully recovered response is in the bottom 9%.
This slow responsiveness will make it more difficult to move around on the mattress and change positions during the night.
Bounce Test
The Novilla Serenity has high bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 11.82”. This is 2.25” more bounce than the average of 9.57”, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
6.45″
Max. Rebound
5.37″
Total Bounce
11.82″
The Serenity’s material composition is 2.0” of foam on top of an 8.0” coil unit. Being that the mattress is primarily steel coils it makes perfect sense that we’d see more motion.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

In addition, the relative stiffness of the foam layers further helps to create higher levels of bounce. At 11.82” of bounce the Novilla is on the higher end of my ideal bounce range, but still within it.
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The higher bounce greatly improves sex performance and helps to improve ease of movement, counteracting some of the negative ease of movement impact resulting from the slow material responsiveness.
Edge Support Test
The Novilla Serenity has outstanding sitting edge support and good (but not great) lying edge support.
During our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.0”. This is 2.02” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.02”.
Max Sinkage
2.00″
Lying Support
Good
Having a relatively thin 2.0” comfort layer and stiffer top comfort foams is helping to create a more robust and supportive edge for sitting.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was good, but also not at the same level as sitting edge support.
While lying on the edge of the mattress I felt reasonably well supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with reinforced coils along the sides of the mattress.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

These coils seem to be having a significant positive impact on performance. That said, there are no reinforced edge coils at the head or foot of the mattress.
So do bear that in mind if you often use the edge of the mattress at the head or foot of the bed.
Sex Test
The Novilla Serenity has excellent sex performance. While pressure relief and cooling left much to be desired, the low noise, high bounce, and supportive edge greatly carried the score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 9.9 | Very High |
Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Outstanding |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 5.0 | Poor |
Cooling | 5% | 7.0 | Fair |
The Serenity’s 11.82” of total bounce earned it a perfect score, placing it in the top 20% of mattresses by bounce height. In addition, the outstanding edge support earned high marks as well, helping to extend the sexable surface area of the mattress.
Overall, I am exceedingly impressed with the amorous activity performance on the Serenity.
Pressure Relief Test
The Novilla Serenity has a poor level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt significant pressure points at numerous places on my body. The mattress is equipped with a 2.0” comfort layer.
Comfort Layer
2.0″
Support Layer
8.0″
This is significantly thinner than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.0”, based on all of our tests. In addition, and arguably more important, the quality of the comfort layer just isn’t great.
The materials don’t look or feel particularly great. I would describe the overall comfort layer as “stiff”.

The quilted cover and gel memory foam are inconsistent in terms of their total thickness. At some points on the mattress, we measured the full 10” total profile height that it’s designed to be.
However, at others we’re measuring as low as 9.0” and in other places we’ve measured in between the 9-10” range.
In my view, this just isn’t great. Mattresses should be a consistent height from end to end. Overall, I was really shocked at the material quality and lack of pressure relief.
The Novilla Serenity is significantly worse compared to the similarly priced Novilla Bliss. It’s hard to imagine any scenario where I would recommend the Serenity when the Bliss is a notably better performer.

Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Novilla Serenity is strong right out of the box and the odor takes 7 days to fully dissipate.

The average off-gassing period is 7 days, based on all of our tests to date. As a result, the Serenity is on par with the average off-gassing period.
Company
Novilla mattresses have a 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping and returns are both free.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 10 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 8.0 | Good |
Country of Origin | 0% | Indonesia |
Compared to average, the trial period is shorter than average (average is 173 nights). The warranty is also shorter than average with 24% of all mattresses tested having lifetime warranties and the average of the other 76% of mattresses is 13 years.
How firm is Novilla Serenity?
The Novilla Serenity is available in a single firmness with a medium-firm feel, a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Support & Sleeping Positions
The Novilla Serenity has a mediocre level of support. During our tests, I did not feel well supported in all sleeping positions. Overall, I found the mattress to be incredibly stiff.
This created pressure points and a level of discomfort. These issues compound into support issues, as if you cannot lie comfortably in the same position on the mattress then you won’t feel well supported by the mattress.

The Serenity is equipped with an 8.0” coil unit. This is just a touch thicker than the average support layer, which is 7.9” thick.
The coil unit is fairly basic, which makes sense given the ultra low price point. The coil unit is not zoned and only has reinforced edge coils along the sides of the mattress (there is no edge support at the head / foot).
All that to say, the real problem on the Serenity are the comfort foams. The quality and quantity just isn’t sufficient, in my view.
As with pressure relief, we found support on the similarly priced Novilla Bliss to be significantly better than the Novilla Serenity. As such, it would be virtually impossible to recommend the Serenity over the Bliss.

Design
The Novilla Serenity is a budget-friendly 10″ hybrid mattress. It is designed with a bare-bones approach, providing the basic essentials required for a hybrid mattress type, but not much more (in my view).
Type
Hybrid
Thickness
10″
Firmness
6
But at the end of the day, you’ll get what you pay for. This design is, by definition, a hybrid, but it lacks the real performance advantages that a higher quality hybrid provides.
That being said, if you’re on a super tight budget, there may be a case for the Serenity, assuming you can live with the mattress’s disadvantages.

Materials
There are three simple layers that make up the entire height of the Novilla Serenity. From top to bottom, the layers include:
- 1.50” quilted cover
- 0.50” gel memory foam
- 8.0” coil unit

Although the Serenity is designed to be a 10″ mattress, we found the height to be very inconsistent.
At some places we measured the mattress as short as 9.0” and at others, it’s 10.0”, with measurements in between. It’s quite a lumpy mattress. The variability seems to be due to inconsistencies in the quilted cover and gel memory foam layers.
The Law Tag outlines the full breakdown of materials included in this mattress.

The Cover
The Serenity has a 1.50″ quilted cover with tufts along the surface of the mattress. It is made of a bamboo and rayon fiber blend with a soft feel to it.

The Comfort Layer
Beneath the quilted cover is a 0.5″ gel memory foam layer. This layer is designed for cooling and contour, but at only a 1/2″ thick, it is far too thin to have any real positive effect on the mattress’s performance.

The average comfort layer is 4.0″ thick so the comfort layer on the Serenity just being made of the 1.5″ quilted cover and this thin 0.5″ gel memory foam was quite the disappointment.
The Support Layer
The support layer is an 8.0″ coil unit. The coils are individually wrapped in fabric, which helps reduce motion transfer and create a nicer feel compared to a continuous coil unit.

Even so, I am not overly impressed by the quality of the coil unit. There is no zoning and there are reinforced edge support coils only along the sides (and not the head / foot of the mattress).
At the end of the day, this is a very basic coil unit that is reflective of the ultra budget friendly price point.
Product Evolution
The Novilla Serenity was first released in 2021. Since its initial release, there have been no major design changes made to this mattress.
The only notable change to speak of was an update to the trial period. The trial increased in length from 30 nights (in 2021) to 100 nights (in 2024).
