Best For
- Natural, non-toxic materials
- Deeper sinkage, may be better for some side sleepers
- Ultra low motion transfer, just 3.06 m/s² (avg. is 5.76 m/s²)
Considerations
- Slower response time, especially for a hybrid
- Edge support is a little lacking as well for both sitting & lying
Our Verdict
The Oceano mattress by Brentwood Home is a hybrid mattress with greener, healthier materials. It uses BioFoam memory foam, which is partially plant-derived and lacks chemical additives like fire barriers and other toxic materials.
In our performance tests, it had excellent cooling, very deep sinkage, extremely low motion transfer, very slow response, high bounce, fair edge support, and excellent pressure relief.
The Oceano is a great mattress if you’re looking for a solid hybrid mattress that uses healthier, greener, and more natural materials. What it lacks in edge support and response it makes up for in material quality.

How is Brentwood Oceaco Different?
The Brentwood Oceano mattress has slightly poorer overall performance than average, as well as a price tag that is more than average—36% more than the average hybrid.
With any purchase, this is not the ideal scenario you want to be in, costing more for poorer performance, but there are still a few notable advantages to consider.
Advantages
The Oceano mattress has better cooling performance than average, as well as lower levels of motion transfer, and a thicker overall profile (great for pressure relief).
Neutral Factors
This mattress has 25% deeper sinkage and 6% less bounce than average. Both sinkage and bounce are considered neutral factors as they tend to rely more on
Disadvantages
Disadvantages include slower material response time, poorer edge support, and an exceptionally short trial period (only 30 nights compared to the 160-night average).
Cooling Test
Cooling performance on the Brentwood Home Oceano was excellent. Subjectively speaking, during our tests I never felt any significant degree of heat build-up or hots spots around my body.
Baseline Temp.
77.8° F
Max Temp.
89.3° F
Ending Temp.
80.8° F
The mattress did a nice job of keeping the sleeping surface cooler. The Oceano seems to breathe well, owing to the hybrid design and pocketed coil base.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Looking at our objective heat dissipation data, we see a temperature drop of 4.4° F from 0 to 1 minutes.
This is more than we see on average, which is 3.9 degrees F. From the 2 to 5-minute measurement periods we continue to see a gradual step down in surface-level temperature.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

Over the 5-minute measurement period, the temperature drops from 89.3 to 80.8° Fahrenheit, a drop of 8.5°. Based on our complete library of testing data to date, this isn’t the absolute fastest or best heat dissipation, but it is still very good.
When you combine solid heat dissipation with top foam layers that don’t absorb significant levels of heat, you end up with a cooler sleeping experience overall.
Sinkage Test
The Oceano mattress has a very deep level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured 2.73” of pressure point sinkage.
Sinkage Depth
2.73″
Sinkage Feel
Very Deep
This is considerably deeper than the average. On average, based on all of our mattress tests to date, we see a sinkage depth of just 2.21”.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The deeper sinkage depth of 2.73” means the Brentwood Home Oceano mattress creates a more dramatic hug around the body.
You really feel your body sinking deeper into the relatively soft top layers of foam. For many sleepers, this type of feeling creates an ideal level of pressure relief. However, some may feel entrapped by the deeper sinkage.
There is no right or wrong when it comes to sinkage, but you should think carefully about the type of sinkage that you prefer and what will work best for your body.
Motion Transfer Test
The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress has an extremely low level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 3.06 m/s². This is significantly better than the average, based on all of our mattress tests to date, which is 8.52 m/s².
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
Oftentimes with hybrid mattresses, we see motion transfer closer to the average or slightly above. As a result, I was pleasantly surprised by the incredibly low level of motion.
Max. Acceleration
1.55 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-1.51 m/s²
Accel. Range
3.06 m/s²
Despite the pocketed coil base, the Oceano does an impressive job at absorbing and minimizing energy and motion.

Looking at our motion transfer chart (which visualizes the accelerometer data), we can see a higher level of energy until 0.63 seconds.
After that time, motion drops significantly up until 0.92 seconds, before returning to near-zero levels. Concerning both our objective data and the subjective experience, we can say with great confidence that the motion transfer on the Oceano is exceptionally low.
Response Test
The response time on the Brentwood Home Oceano is very slow. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 1.0 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 3.0 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
1.0 sec.
Complete Recovery
3.0 sec.
When you compare this to the averages (based on all of our mattress tests to date) it’s not a pretty picture.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
On average, we’ve measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.6 seconds and a full material recovery of 1.0 seconds.
As a result, the Oceano mattress is both significantly closer than the average in both material response categories.
In absolute terms, 1.0 seconds isn’t terrible, but 3.0 seconds for a full material recovery just isn’t good.
For many sleepers, a slow response makes the mattress harder to move around on and can increase a feeling of being “stuck” in the mattress.
This is especially true when mattresses have a deeper level of sinkage, which the Oceano certainly does, with 2.73” of sinkage.
Bounce Test
The Oceano mattress has a high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured 9.12” of total bounce height.
This is just a little less than average, but still very much within the sweet spot that we like to see.
Max. Depth
5.48″
Max. Rebound
3.64″
Total Bounce
9.12″
On average, we have measured a bounce height of 9.65” across all mattresses we’ve tested to date.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
To a certain level, bounce is a preferential factor. Even so, more bounce makes it easier to move around on the mattress, gives it a more traditional feel, and improves sex.
In general, I like to see 8-12” of bounce. Less than that and you fail to realize the positives of bounce, more than that and you end up with extra motion and a trampoline feel.
Edge Support Test
Edge support is the one area that the Oceano mattress really struggled with. Like material response, the edge support is good, but far from great.
In our sitting edge support tests, we measured edge compression of 5.50”. This is considerably more than the average based on all of our tests to date, which is 4.65”. That said, even just being average is far from good.
Max Sinkage
5.50″
Lying Support
Good
With respect to edge support, I like to see a sinkage compression of 4.0” or less. When sitting directly on the edge of the mattress I just don’t feel very well supported by the Oceano.
It’s not the type of mattress that I’d prefer to sit on to watch TV or even get ready in the morning.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Edge support while lying directly on the edge is better, but still leaves something to be desired.
When lying on my side I felt more well-supported, however, when lying on my back there is a definite sensation of being rolled off the mattress.
Looking at the material design of the mattress it makes sense. There is a thick 5.0” comfort layer on the Oceano.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

This comfort layer, combined with the quilted cover, are fantastic when it comes to pressure relief and overall comfort. However, those same attributes that deliver comfort don’t create enough support at the edges.
Sex Test
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 8.2 | High |
Edge Support | 20% | 6.9 | Mediocre |
Noise | 5% | 8.0 | Moderate |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Looking at these factors independently, we see a high level of bounce is excellent for good sex. This mattress is also quiet, has fantastic pressure relief, and great cooling performance.

The biggest mark against the Oceano is the lack of edge support. In our edge support test, we saw pretty significant sinkage, which is less than ideal for sex where edge support may come into play.
This score is arguably better than most foam mattresses and certainly better than any 10″ thick mattress. But for a high-profile luxury hybrid, we have certaintly tested better options.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on the Brentwood Home Oceano mattress is excellent. In our tests, I felt plenty of pressure relief in all sleeping positions.
Comfort Layer
5.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
In terms of material construction and design, the Oceano checks most of my boxes. The 14” thick profile with 5.0” of comfort material is good to see. This type of design ensures it’s sufficiently thick enough to properly support sleepers of all body types.
Meanwhile, the 5.0” comfort material creates ample pressure relief for all sleeping positions and body weights too.

The quilted cover adds extra pressure relief, which while helpful for most sleepers, is especially helpful to lighter-weight sleepers (who aren’t always heavy enough to engage with the full comfort layer materials).
All things considered, I’m very pleased with the pressure relief on the Oceano.
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Brentwood Oceano was initially strong, but not necessarily anything unusual.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
4 days
The mattress had a strong smell right out of the box. Upon unboxing, it took 4 days for the mattress to fully off-gas.
To speed up off-gassing, leave the unboxed mattress in a well-ventilated room without any bedding or fitted sheets on it. Once off-gassing is complete, you shouldn’t notice any off-putting smell from this mattress.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 10 | 365 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 10 | 25 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 8.0 | Good |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Brentwood Home is owned by Avocado Green, the same company that produces the Avocado Green mattress, among others.
It comes with a 365-night trial and a 25-year limited warranty. Shipping and returns are free, although it does come with a 30-night adjustment period.
What is an adjustment period?
In the first 30 days of owning the Oceano mattress, you cannot initiate a return or refund. This gives your body time to adjust to the feel of the new mattress without making a decision based solely on first impressions.
How firm is the Brentwood Home Oceano?
The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress has a medium firm feel of 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

This firmness suits a wide range of sleepers being that it is firm enough to support heavier sleepers, but also soft enough that lightweight sleepers can still get the contour and hug they need as well.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Oceano mattress has fantastic support. In our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The only area where support could be better is the absolute edge.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
While lying and sitting directly on the edge I experienced too much sinkage, creating a lack of support. However, everywhere else on the mattress the support performance was excellent.
Given the 14” profile and material construction, the Oceano mattress will be appropriate to all sleeping positions and the vast majority of all body types.
Sleepers over 400 pounds may want to consider another option (ex. Winkbed Plus, Helix Plus, Titan, etc.), anything less than that, and I’m confident it will be sufficiently supportive.
Design
The Brentwood Home Oceano mattress is a blend of foam and coils. It is designed as a healthier, non-toxic luxury hybrid.
The Oceano uses a CertiPUR-US® certified gel memory foam and incorporates other natural materials or processes, like organic cotton, wool, and Tencel (which is plant-based).

There is a plush quilted cover with memory foam and micro coils for the top comfort layers. A transitional poly foam sits below the micro coils followed by 8.0″ pocketed coils and a 1″ slab of support foam at the bottom to help retain structure.

Materials
- 1.5″ memory foam
- 2.5″ pocketed micro coils
- 1.0″ poly foam
- 8.0″ pocketed coils
- 1.0″ support foam

The Cover
The cover of the Oceano mattress is made of Tencel with a sub-layer of GOTS-certified organic wool. Including organic wool is great for cooling performance as well as making it flame-retardant without the use of chemicals or synthetic fibers.
Aesthetically, it has a two-tone look with a white top and darker canvas side panels. There are handles on the sides of the mattress to make it easier to lift as needed.

The Tencel on the top of the mattress is naturally derived from eucalyptus and is included to help with limiting heat retention as well as wicking moisture away.

The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer of the Oceano includes three layers of material. The top layer is a gel-infused memory foam made of BioFoam.
This is a special kind of memory foam that is CertiPUR-US® certified with plant-based materials for improved pressure relief and cooling.

Below the gel BioFoam is a layer of pocketed micro coils. This layer is 2.5″ thick and includes up to 1,722 individually wrapped micro-pocketed recycled steel coils. Individually pocketing the coils improves pressure relief and provides excellent contour.
Lastly, below the coils is a 1″ layer of poly foam that acts as a transitional layer between the comfort layers and the support coils.
The Support Layer
The support layer of the Oceano is made up of two layers. The first is an 8.0″ layer of pocketed coils that are individually encased in fabric, much like the design of the micro coils above.

This layer of coils is designed with a 7-zone system that provides different support along the surface of the mattress.
It features up to 975 individually pocketed coils, plus a reinforced perimeter for improved edge support (although edges still aren’t great).
Product Evolution
The Oceano by Brentwood Home was launched in 2016. Since its original launch, there have been no changes to the mattress’s design, firmness, or feel.
