Best For
- Exceptional pressure relief
- Less motion transfer than the average mattress
- Great cooling, especially for a memory foam mattress
Considerations
- Priced 68% more than the average memory foam mattress
- Low bounce results in weaker sex performance
- Limited bounce and softer feel can make it harder to move around on
Our Verdict
The Amerisleep AS5 is a 14″ memory foam mattress with a 5″ memory foam comfort layer, a 1.75″ poly foam transitional layer, and a 6.75″ support foam layer.
It has moderate levels of sinkage and low levels of bounce.
The AS5 has a soft feel (4 out of 10 on the firmness scale) and is the softest mattress in the Amerisleep collection. For something firmer, check out the AS3 or AS2.
In our performance tests, the AS5 earned an overall score of 9.10, ranking in the top 16% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking exclusively at memory foam mattresses, the AS5 ranks #2, only trailing behind the GhostBed Luxe.
Price is the only factor that hurts the AS5, as the price tag is 68% more than the average memory foam mattress ($1,095). But you’re getting a more luxurious mattress with a thicker profile (14″ compared to 12″ average) and high-quality materials.

How is Amerisleep AS5 Different?
The Amerisleep AS5 has better-than-average performance, but also a price tag that is above average—68% more than the average memory foam mattress ($1,095).
Advantages
Advantages of the AS5 include better cooling, lower levels of motion transfer, and faster material response time. Pressure relief is also fantastic with 7.25″ of material above the support layer (average is 4.1″).
Neutral Factors
This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. Edge support is also a bit of a neutral factor, with sitting edge support slightly deeper than average, but lying edge support slightly more supportive than average.
Disadvantages
Sex performance struggles on the AS5, primarily because of the low bounce. This isn’t really the fault of the AS5, but more so the nature of a soft memory foam mattress. These results aren’t surprising but could be worth considering if sex is critically important to you.

Cooling Test
The Amerisleep AS5 has excellent cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
78.8° F
Max Temp.
89.1° F
Ending Temp.
81.0° F
The mattress has a number of design attributes and materials that improve cooling. First, the cover has a noticeable cool-to-the-touch feel. The cover is infused with specialized cooling fibers.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Even after lying in the same position for 15 minutes, the cover remained cooler. Next up, the foams are a proprietary type of memory foam. The foam structure has large open cells throughout.
Essentially, these are small air pockets that allow the foam to breathe substantially better, creating better airflow, which leads to better cooling performance.
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.1° F, which is 0.5° cooler than the average of 89.6°, based on all of our tests to date.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the objective data, subjective experience, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.
Sinkage Test
The Amerisleep AS5 has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.09”. This is 0.05” less sinkage than the average of 2.14”, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
2.09″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
The mattress creates a dramatic body-contouring hug. The AS5 uses a 5.0” of memory foam within the comfort layer. Those layers precisely contour to the exact and unique shape of each sleeper’s body.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

In addition, the thin cover on the mattress creates a more significant and direct contact between foams and sleepers, further emphasizing that memory foam feel.
In order to be comfortable on the Amerisleep you’ll really need to enjoy a more significant body contouring hug and the feel of memory foam.
Motion Transfer Test
The Amerisleep AS5 has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.11 m/s². This is 19% less motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
3.14 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-3.97 m/s²
Accel. Range
7.11 m/s²
The mattress has many factors that help to keep motion transfer held to a minimum, including the soft feel, thick memory foam comfort layer, and all foam construction.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0 to 0.22 seconds. Motion drops significantly thereafter and by 0.64 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.

Both the motion duration and motion intensity are kept to very reasonable levels. I don’t expect motion transfer will be an issue for most sleepers.
Response Test
The Amerisleep AS5 has a very fast responsiveness. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered time of 0.3 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.4 seconds. This is 0.11 and 0.50 seconds faster than the average responsiveness speeds of 0.41 and 0.90 seconds, respectively.
Mostly Recovered
0.3 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.4 sec.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
At these recovery speeds the AS5 doesn’t quite bounce back to shape instantly, but it’s not far from it.
Amerisleep’s proprietary memory foam has a material responsiveness speed nearly on par with latex and other highly responsive poly foams even though it still creates the feel, contour, hug, and pressure relief of memory foam.
The rapid responsiveness helps prevent sleepers from feeling stuck in the foams or creating difficulty moving around on the mattress.
Bounce Test
The Amerisleep AS5 has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 7.28”. This is 2.25” less bounce than the average of 9.53”, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
5.64″
Max. Rebound

Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The combination of being an all-foam mattress, with a softer feel, and thick 5.0” memory foam layer all work together to reduce bounce.
The lower bounce makes it more difficult to move around on the mattress and also negatively impacts sex performance. That said, the low bounce is also the reason for the lower level of motion transfer.
Edge Support Test
The Amerisleep AS5 has good sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support.
Max Sinkage
4.50″
Lying Support
Excellent
In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.50”. This is 0.46” more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.04”, based on all of our tests to date.
While the softer feel and thick 5.0” memory foam comfort layer are great for pressure relief and comfort, they are also the reason for the deeper sitting sinkage.
Those materials just don’t have the rigidity and support required to create the best sitting edge support.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While sitting edge support wasn’t exactly incredible, lying edge support was notably better. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.
The AS5 does a much better job at creating support on the edge when weight is more evenly spread out, as it is while lying.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Unfortunately, the AS5 doesn’t use any type of reinforced perimeter edge support foam. This is certainly limiting the sitting edge support performance. Overall, I’m pleased that lying edge support was excellent, but I do wish sitting edge support was more robust.
Sex Test
The Amerisleep AS5 has fair sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal, pressure relief is outstanding, and cooling is excellent. Edge support is also good, but far from great.
In our edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.5”. This is quite a bit deeper than the average of 4.04”, based on all of our tests to date.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 7.0 | Moderate |
Edge Support | 20% | 8.1 | Good |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
That deeper edge sinkage can make certain amorous activities more troublesome. All that said, the most distressing part of dance without pants performance is bounce, which we measured at 7.28”.
This is considerably less bounce than the average of 9.53”, based on all of our tests to date. The lower bounce is the single greatest factor that negatively impacts the sex score.

Unfortunately, lower bounce and weaker edges are a common hallmark of all foam memory foam mattresses, as well as softer mattresses.
Pressure Relief Test
The Amerisleep AS5 has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no pressure points anywhere on my body. To the contrary, the mattress is incredibly comfortable.
Comfort Layer
7.25″
Support Layer
6.75″
The AS5 is equipped with a 7.25” comfort layer. This is considerably thicker than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.0”, based on all of our tests to date. All of that extra foam creates the right material conditions to create fantastic pressure relief and comfort.
In addition to quantity, I am impressed with the quality of Amerisleep’s foams. The AS5 uses a proprietary memory foam called Bio-PUR, this foam provides the benefits of memory foam, while minimizing the negatives of traditional memory foam.
The foam looks and feels high quality. When we consider the material specs, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the design, I’m confident in my view that pressure relief is outstanding.

Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the Amerisleep AS5 is strong right out of the box and the odor lasted for 3 days.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period

Comparing all mattresses tested to date, the average off-gassing period is 7 days, so the AS5 is 4 days shorter than average.
Company
Amerisleep mattresses come with a 100-night trial period and a 20-year warranty. Shipping is free and so are returns if the mattress ends up not working out.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 20 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
For reference, the average trial period is 178 nights, about 2.5X months longer than the Amerisleep trial. But Amerisleep has a longer warranty.
Considering the 270+ mattresses tested to date, the average warranty is 13 years (excluding 25% of mattresses that offer a lifetime warranty).
How firm is Amerisleep AS5?
The Amerisleep AS5 has a soft feel with a firmness of only 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

The most popular firmness is 6 out of 10 (medium-firm) so the AS5 is quite a bit softer. For something firmer, you may want to opt for the AS3 (medium, 5 out of 10) or the AS2 (medium-firm, 6 out of 10).
These alternative options would be better suited for heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomachs.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Amerisleep AS5 has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress uses a 6.75” support foam layer.
This is a good bit thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.9”, based on all of our tests to date. Even so, when we look at the total 14.0” profile of the mattress and notably thicker than average 7.25” comfort layer, it still has more than enough material to create ample support.

The AS5 has a soft feel, making it ideal for side sleepers, but not particularly great for back or stomach sleepers.
At 14.0” thick the AS5 is 2.0” thicker than the average total mattress height of 12.0”, based on all of our tests to date. Overall, I’m pleased with the support dynamic and expect it to be a non-issue for most sleepers.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

The Cover
The cover of the AS5 foam mattress is their Cooling Refresh Cover. This is the same cover we have seen on other Amerisleep mattresses.
The technology used within the cover is designed to draw heat from your skin and avoid heat retention.

According to the manufacturer, on average, the sleeping surface will stay 7° cooler over an eight-hour night of rest compared to a traditional 100% polyester cover.
The Refresh Cover is also aimed at improving daily energy and performance as well. This technology uses embedded minerals to help convert body heat to far infrared energy.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer on the AS5 includes three separate foam layers. On top, we see a 3.0″ memory foam layer. This is Amerisleep’s Bio-Pur foam. It has an open-cell design, which gives it a more modern memory foam feel, limiting heat retention and preventing any feeling of being “trapped” within the foam.
Below the Bio-Pur layer is a 2.0″ memory foam. This foam is called “Active Flex”. Within the Amerisleep lineup, the AS5 models are the only ones that contain this foam.
According the the manufacturer, Active Flex foam contours like memory foam, but retains a responsive feel (like latex foam). The data from our response tests support Amerisleep’s claim.

The last foam in the comfort layer is a 1.75″ poly foam. This acts more like a transitional foam between the comfort materials and the support layer below.
Note: The AS5 product page says that the third layer should have a Hive-designed convoluted foam. Our model did not appear to have it, or the adhesive was so strong connecting layers that it was not possible to tell.
The Support Layer
The support layer is a 6.75″ Bio-Core support foam. It is high-density and provides consistent support across the entirety of the mattress.

Product Evolution
The Amerisleep AS5 was first released in 2018. Prior to 2018, Amerisleep sold a very similar mattress under the name Amerisleep Colonial. The AS5 is considered the successor of the Colonial.
Amerisleep was founded in 2010 and in 2017 all of their existing mattresses were renamed from words to numbers. Amerisleep Colonial became AS5, Amerisleep Liberty became AS3, etc. In 2017 some materials and covers were also re-designed.
This new naming system allowed for clarity regarding mattress firmness. The higher the number, the softer the mattress. Of the Amerisleep mattresses we’ve tested, the AS2 is the firmest (6 out of 10) and the AS5 is the softest (4 out of 10).

For Firmer Feel

GhostBed Luxe
9.19 Overall Score
The GhostBed Luxe is a 13″ memory foam mattress with a medium-firm feel, firmer than that of the AS5. Despite its firmer feel, it still has extremely deep sinkage and high levels of contour.
For Budget

Novosbed Soft
8.87 Overall Score
The Novosbed Soft is an 11″ memory foam mattress that comes in soft, medium-firm, or firm. It has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. Priced at only $999 for a queen, this mattress is about half the price of the AS5 and a great budget pick.
For Less Motion Transfer

Loom & Leaf
8.81 Overall Score
The Loom & Leaf is a 12″ luxury memory foam mattress. It comes in two firmnesses (medium or firm). For the closest feel to the AS5, I’d recommend the medium Loom & Leaf. It has extremely deep sinkage, very low levels of bounce, and that classic memory foam feel. Compared to the AS5, this mattress has 30% less motion transfer.
