Best For
- Edge support while lying is excellent. Even when lying directly on the edge sleepers are well-supported.
- Pressure relief is outstandingly good.
Considerations
- Response time is closer to average. That is to say fast, just not the fastest.
- Strong smell that lingered for 8 days. Quite a bit longer than the average of 2.75 days
Our Verdict
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is a 12″ mattress that uses modern memory foam and pocketed coils for comfort and support. It has a medium firmness, around 5 out of 10, which is just a touch softer than a medium firm (which generally comes in around 6 out of 10).
It has a deep level of sinkage and moderately high bounce that gives it a satisfying memory foam feel that is still easy to move around on.
The AS3 Hybrid is ranked in the top 10% of mattresses by overall score out of 271 mattresses tested to date. For just memory foam hybrids, it is #1 in its category.
For a queen mattress, the AS3 Hybrid is $1,499, which is 4% cheaper than the average memory foam hybrid.
From top to bottom, this mattress checks just about every box and test we look at. The material construction is fantastic and the performance tests speak for themselves.

How is Amerisleep Different?
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress has better performance than average and a price tag that is only slightly above average—4% more than the average memory foam hybrid.
Advantages
Categories where the AS3 shines include better-than-average cooling performance, as well as low levels of motion transfer (49% better performance than average). Edge support was also 7.5% better than average, measuring 0.3″ less compression when sitting directly on the edge.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has 10% deeper sinkage than average as well as 3% less bounce than average.
Disadvantages
The AS3 Hybrid does have less comfort material than average, 1.1″ less, but still retains a pressure relief score of 10. Sometimes we see pressure relief issues where there are thinner comfort layers, but that is not the case with the AS3 Hybrid.
All in all, this is a fantastic mattress compared to over 270+ mattresses tested to date.
Cooling Test
Cooling performance on the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid was excellent. In my tests, I felt comfortably cool for the full duration of the test and did not feel any significant heat build-up.
You can see the data from our performance tests below.
Baseline Temp.
76.8° F
Max Temp.
86.9° F
Ending Temp.
79.9° F
Max Temp.
Ending Temp
- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
Overall, these results on the AS3 were good. Much of the cooling performance can be attributed to Amerisleep’s proprietary memory foam, which they call Bio-Pur. It shares similarities with many other modern memory foams we’ve tested, but it does seem to be a cut above in a number of other areas (more on that down below).
Most notably, compared to more traditional memory foam it does not retain heat and has a larger open-cell structure, which allows for better airflow, and therefore better cooling.
This 3.0” layer of memory foam sits atop an 8.0” layer of pocketed coils. Pocketed coils by their very nature don’t have as much physical material in which heat could be absorbed (compared to typical support foam).
Heat Dissipation Over Time
Because of this, there is no medium for heat absorption and there is additional breathability. The material choices, hybrid design, and thin cover work together to maximize airflow and keep sleepers cooler.
Sinkage Test
In our pressure point tests, we measured 2.38” of sinkage. This is just slightly more than the average sinkage of 2.15” (which is average across all mattresses we’ve tested to date).
Sinkage Depth
2.38″
Sinkage Feel
Deep
The level of sinkage is also documented in the image below.
I would describe the sinkage depth as “moderate”. It’s not too much, but not too little. The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid does an amazing job at providing sinkage and pressure relief with very little weight required.
Even so, I never felt overly enveloped by the mattress or that I was sinking too deeply within the foams. The design and material choices strike an amazing balance of comfort and support.
The mattress allows for contour and hug to be created even with light pressure / weight, but still provides immediate transitional support so that your body doesn’t sink too deeply.
Motion Transfer Test
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress has an extremely low level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a 4.46 m/s² acceleration range on our accelerometer.
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
These results are 49% lower than the average acceleration range across all mattresses we’ve tested to date, which is 8.79 m/s².
The medium softness memory foam top layer does an excellent job at absorbing and dissipating energy, resulting in less motion.
Max. Acceleration
2.36 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-2.10 m/s²
Accel. Range
4.46 m/s²
This is even despite the fact that the mattress utilizes pocketed coils (which have a capacity for more motion compared to all-foam mattresses).
While it’s not the absolute lowest motion transfer we’ve tested, it’s well within the “very low” motion category.
You can see from the chart above, motion transfer peaks around 0.28 seconds and then tapers off. Even at its peak, it’s still below 3.0 m/s² and by 0.86 seconds it’s basically been absorbed into the materials of the mattress.
Response Test
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has a moderately fast response time. In our tests, we measured 0.4 seconds for the materials to mostly recover and saw 1.0 seconds for full material recovery.
Mostly Recovered
0.4 sec.
Complete Recovery
1.0 sec.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The mostly recovered time is a little better than average, while the full recovery time is average. On average, it takes mattresses 0.4 seconds to mostly recover and 0.8 seconds to fully recover.
A slower response time can result in some sleepers feeling more “stuck” or “enveloped” by the mattress materials.
Since the AS3 Hybrid has more sinkage and a softer feel this may be a concern for some sleepers. However, the response speed was sufficiently fast enough that most sleepers should not find it problematic.
Bounce Test
We measured a high level of bounce in our tests of the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid.
Max. Depth
5.54″
Max. Rebound
3.67″
Total Bounce
9.21″
Max. Sinkage Depth
Max Bounce Height
Our high-speed video analysis revealed a combined bounce height of 9.21”.
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
This is slightly more than the average, which is 9.52”. I would describe the bounce height of the AS3 Hybrid as moderate. It’s right in the sweet spot of not too much or too little.
Just as the soft memory foam resulted in lower motion transfer, that same attribute resulted in a relatively restrained bounce height, especially compared to the level of bounce that firmer hybrids can see.
Edge Support Test
The edge support on the AS3 Hybrid was excellent. In our sitting tests, we measured a total compression depth of 3.75”. This is 0.30″ better than the average of 4.05”.
Max Sinkage
3.75″
Lying Support
Outstanding
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.
Sitting, 200 lbs.
The AS3 Hybrid did a fantastic job of remaining supportive and comfortable even with direct pressure on the edge while sitting. Lying edge support was equally as impressive.
While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt just as well supported as I did when lying closer to the middle of the mattress. The pocketed coils clearly reinforced at the edges to provide greater support.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.
Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.
Overall, I am exceedingly pleased with the edge support. Many times medium softness (and softer) mattresses can struggle with edge support, a product of the top layer comfort materials. Despite the softness and added pressure relief, the AS3 Hybrid remains incredibly supportive at the edges.
Sex Test
The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.
These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 8.2 | High |
Edge Support | 20% | 9.1 | Excellent |
Noise | 5% | 8.0 | Moderate |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 10 | Outstanding |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
This is a really good score. Let’s talk about why the Amerisleep AS3 performs so well for sex. First of all, bounce. The AS3 generated a bounce range of 9.21, which is in the moderate bounce range. The average bounce across all mattresses we’ve tested to date is 9.52″.
The response foams and springy coils make the AS3 Hybrid engaging and bouncy for better sex.
In addition, the edge performance was good also, which as I mentioned is a bit surprising because of the softer feel of the AS3 Hybrid. These two factors alone make up 80% of the total score.
The other factors (noise, pressure relief, and cooing) also had good scores—minimal noise, fantastic pressure relief, and excellent cooling.
Pressure Relief Test
When considering pressure relief, two of the most important factors include the thickness of the comfort layer and total mattress thickness.
Comfort Layer
3.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
Pressure relief on the AS3 Hybrid is outstandingly good as well. The mattress has a medium softness at a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
This firmness, combined with the thick layer of high-performance memory foam, creates a surface that eases sleeper bodies into the mattress, helping to contour, hug, and relax.
Amerisleep’s proprietary memory foam is genuinely better than many others on the market.
The level of softness and pressure relief it’s able to create, while still being supportive, is impressive. There are many great memory foams on the market, but Amerisleep takes it a step beyond that.
Off-Gassing Test
After we opened the Amerisleep mattress we noted it had a strong smell.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
8 days
There was a significant smell on the mattress for 8 days, which is quite a bit longer than average.
On average, we see smells lingering on mattresses for 2.64 days. If you are sensitive to strong odors, I would recommend airing out the mattress (without sheets or other bedding) for a week or so to help give it time to fully off gas and stop smelling.
Company
The company score takes a look at factors that may influence your experience with the mattress.
Factors include length of the trial period, warranty, shipping / return costs, and country of origin.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 20 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Amerisleep, as a company, has been around since 2010 and is one of the older mattress manufacturers in the industry.
They have good a trial period and shipping / return policies.
When you purchase the Amerisleep, you have 100 nights to decide if it’s the right choice for you.
You cannot initiate a return within the first 30 days, as your body gets used to the mattress. This is a fairly common practice among mattress purchases online.
If after the first 30 nights, you still want a return, the company will issue a full refund (if returned before the 100-night trial has expired). Shipping is free and returns are free as well.
How firm is the AS3 Hybrid?
The firmness of the AS3 Hybrid mattress comes in around a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This is a bit softer than a medium-firm and has a supple softness to it.
If you like that plush feel and sinking in a bit more, the AS3 is a good pick. For something slightly firmer, you may want to check out the AS2 Hybrid, which comes in closer to a 6 out of 10.
Support & Sleeping Positions
In our tests, I found the mattress to be perfectly supportive. The thickness, design, and material choices will be supportive for most body weights and most sleeping positions.
The table below reflects these findings. You can use it to find your weight and sleeping position and see if the AS3 Hybrid is right for you.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
What is the weight limit on the AS3?
All Amerisleep hybrids have a weight limit of 650 lbs. or 325 lbs. per side.
My only concern is that some heavy-weight sleepers may find it creates a little too much sinkage. If you are over 300 pounds you are probably better off going with the Amerisleep AS2 Hybrid.
The AS2 Hybrid is a medium firm mattress. It is softer than an all-foam mattress, but also more supportive because of the pocketed coils.
The added firmness of the AS2 will help support the body better. This is especially true for heavyweight back and stomach sleepers.
For everyone else, there won’t be any significant support issues. The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is well balanced to the needs of most sleepers, capable of providing excellent support, comfort, and pressure relief.
Design
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is a blend of modern memory foam and pocketed coils. Material layers are simple, but that just shows that you don’t need complex layers in order to have a supportive, pressure-relieving feel.
Type
Memory Foam Hybrid
Thickness
12″
Firmness
5
This mattress is 12″ thick and the inside layers are somewhat reflected by the two-tone color of the cover. The cover also zips off to be washed or otherwise.
When you zip off the cover, the mattress is still held together by a form-fitting fire sock. This thin fabric protects the foam layers and acts as a fire barrier.
Materials
The materials used in the AS3 Hybrid include a mix of foams and support coils, individually encased and pocketed in fabric.
From top to bottom, the layers are listed below.
- 3.0″ memory foam
- 8.0″ pocketed coils
- 1.0″ transitional / support foam
The Cover
The cover on the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is their Cooling Refresh cover. This technology is designed to draw heat from your skin and avoid any instance of heat retention.
According to the manufacturer, on average, the sleeping surface will stay 7° cooler over an eight-hour night of rest compared to a traditional 100% polyester cover.
The Refresh Cover is also aimed at improving daily energy and performance as well. This technology uses embedded minerals to help convert body heat to far infrared energy.
What is far infrared energy?
Science has shown that far infrared energy can increase blood circulation, speed up muscle recovery, and improve overall sleep quality.
It’s also important to note here that the cover of the AS3 Hybrid has a zipper closure. This is a nice feature for cleaning the mattress cover or better cleaning up spills directly onto the foam.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is 3.0″ thick at the top of the mattress and is made from Amerisleep’s proprietary modern memory foam.
Unlike traditional memory foams, the Amerisleep foam has a faster response time and more bounce, while retaining low motion transfer.
The Support Layer
The support layer includes an 8.0″ layer of pocketed coils as well as a 1.0″ layer of high-density support foam at the very bottom.
Pocketed coils provide great bounce and pressure relief since they can move independently and respond to pressure as needed.
They also have more limited motion transfer than what you’d get with a classic coil-on-coil or traditional innerspring mattress.
Product Evolution
The AS3 Hybrid was one of the founding mattresses, originally named the Liberty, from Amerisleep’s original collection.
Amerisleep renamed their mattresses in 2017 in an effort to bring simplicity to their firmness scale and make it easier for sleepers to find the right mattress for their needs.
Q: How does the Amerisleep model names work?
A: The higher the number the softer the mattress. (ex: AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, AS5). The AS1 is the firmest, while the AS5 is the softest.
Outside of a new name, there have been minimal changes to the AS3 Hybrid since it first launched as the Liberty.

For Firmer Feel
WinkBed
Luxury Firm – 6 out of 10
If you like the AS3 Hybrid makeup but are looking for a slightly firmer feel, the WinkBed Luxury Firm mattress is a good pick. It comes in closer to a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, but still uses a blend of pocketed coils and foams. Winkbed also offers a soft and firm version.
For Euro-Style Cover
Nest Bedding Sparrow
Offgasses in 2 days
The Sparrow by Nest Bedding is another hybrid and it has a similar 3.0″ comfort layer and a Euro-style pillow topper. This mattress has more of a balanced feel compared to the modern memory foam feel of the AS3, but a very similar firmness.
