Best For

  • Low levels of motion transfer
  • Good pressure relief with 2.0″ comfort memory foam and 3.0″ transitional poly foam
  • Moderate sinkage and low bounce—classic memory foam

Considerations

  • Low bounce and sitting edge support that is deeper than average leads to lower sex score
  • Relatively short trial period, 100 nights

Our Verdict

The Amerisleep AS2 mattress is a 12″ memory foam mattress with a memory foam comfort layer, poly foam transition layer, and a high-density support layer.

This mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and low levels of bounce, for that classic memory foam feel.

It comes in a single firmness—6 out of 10 and has a medium-firm feel. This is just a touch firmer than the Amerisleep AS3 (5 out of 10 with a medium feel).

In our performance tests, the AS2 earned an overall score of 8.87. Comparing the 270+ mattresses, this puts the AS2 in the top 30% of all mattresses tested to date.

Despite the higher performance, I was pleased to see the price below average as well. A queen AS2 mattress runs $1049, a savings of about $50 off the average price. Overall, the AS2 is a fantastic value mattress and a good performer.

How is Amerisleep AS2 Different?

The Amerisleep AS2 is a 12″ memory foam mattress with a better overall score than average as well as a price tag that is slightly less than average. When looking for a good value mattress, this is exactly the balance we like to see.

Advantages

Other specific advantages of the AS2 include better cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, better pressure relief, and 5.0″ of comfort material (1.0″ more material than what we see on average).

Neutral Factors

The AS2 has moderate levels of sinkage and low levels of bounce. Material response time is about at the average level which makes it a bit of a neutral factor. Off-gassing is at the average level as well.

Disadvantages

Because of the lower levels of bounce and slightly worse edge support when seated, the sex score takes a dip. For couples, this could be a disadvantage.

Cooling Test

The Amerisleep AS2 has excellent cooling performance. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The mattress has many design and material choices that help improve its cooling performance including the thin cover, open cell foams, and high-quality foams. Amerisleep’s BioPur foam in particular is especially impressive.

It’s a proprietary foam formulation that has more open cells within the foam, which are essentially tiny air pockets within the foam itself. These small air pockets allow air to more easily flow in and out of the mattress and greatly help to prevent heat retention.

In our objective temperate tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.8° F, which is 0.2° warmer than the average of 89.6°.

When we look at the total picture of objective data, subjective experience, and analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is excellent.

Sinkage Test

The Amerisleep AS2 has a moderate sinkage depth. In our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage of 2.00”. This is 0.14” less sinkage than the average of 2.14”, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Depth

Sinkage Feel

Moderate

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a balanced level of body contouring hug. However, the feel of the mattress is somewhat unique.

The foams still create a hug around the body that forms to your unique shape, however, because the sinkage depth is on the border between moderate and minimal it is a more restrained and balanced type of a hug.

For those who are concerned about being overly enveloped by foam layers and hug this can be a really good fit as you get to experience the feel, hug, and pressure relief of memory foam, without it being overly dramatic around the body.

9.7

Motion Transfer Test

The Amerisleep AS2 has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 5.75 m/s². This is 35% less motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s², based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Acceleration

2.58 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

Accel. Range

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

The all-foam design and memory foam comfort layer are both significant factors in keeping motion reduced.

In addition, the thin, smooth cover performs better than many quilted covers. The combination creates a level of motion that is far better than average.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0 to 0.15 seconds.

Amerisleep As2 Motion Transfer Chart
Amerisleep As2 Motion Transfer Chart

Motion drops significantly thereafter and by 0.73 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy. Mattresses with the least motion are able to disperse all energy within 0.3 seconds.

The AS2 isn’t quite at that level. Nevertheless, the motion intensity is still incredibly low.

8.9

Response Test

The Amerisleep AS2 has a very fast mostly recovered responsiveness and a moderate fully recovered responsiveness.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

1.1 sec.

In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered speed of 0.3 seconds and a fully recovered speed of 1.1 seconds. The mostly recovered speed is 0.11 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds, while the fully recovered responsiveness speed is 0.20 seconds slower than the average of 0.90 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

The AS2 uses a proprietary type of memory foam that aims to limit the weakness of memory foam, while still maintaining the feel, contour, and pressure relief memory foam is known for.

Very slow material responsiveness speeds are a hallmark of more traditional memory foam.

While the AS2 isn’t quite as fast as latex and many different poly foams are in terms of responsiveness speed, it isn’t slow either. For those who love the feel of memory foam, but want faster response so you don’t feel stuck in the mattress, the AS2 is a good choice.

Bounce Test

The Amerisleep AS2 has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 6.95”. This is 2.59” less bounce than the average of 9.54”, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

The combination of memory foam on top of poly foam and support foam serves to significantly reduce energy and bounce. This is great when it comes to reducing motion transfer.

However, the lower bounce does make it more difficult to move around on the mattress and significantly negatively impacts sex performance. To be comfortable on the AS2 you’ll need to be okay with a below-average level of bounce.

8.7

Edge Support Test

The Amerisleep AS2 has good sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support.

Max Sinkage

4.25″

Lying Support

Excellent

While sitting directly on the edge of the mattress we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.25”. This is 0.22” more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.03”, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was even more impressive. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. Notably, the mattress does not include any type reinforced perimeter edge support foam.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

However, even without it the performance was fantastic. The combination of medium-firm feel, thick support layer, and high quality foams throughout are all helping to ensure excellent support, even all the way out to the edge.

7.5

Sex Test

The Amerisleep AS2 has fair sex performance. On the positive side, we have minimal noise with excellent pressure relief and cooling. Edge support was also in the green with 4.25” of sitting sinkage compression.

This is a bit more than the average sitting sinkage, but still enough to create sufficient support for most edge-of-mattress amorous activities.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%6.8Low
Edge Support20%8.4Good
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%9.0Excellent
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

The most significant weak spot on the AS2 is the lack of bounce. With just 6.95” of total bounce the AS2 absolutely has a low bounce level.

The lack of bounce means that the dance without pants can be more strenuous and difficult, as the mattress just won’t work with you and your partner the same way that a mattress with coils will. Overall, sex performance leaves something to be desired.

9.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Amerisleep AS2 has excellent pressure relief. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of pressure point build up on my body. The mattress utilizes a 5.0” comfort layer.

Comfort Layer

5.0″

Support Layer

7.0″

This is notably thicker than the average comfort layer thickness, which is 4.0”, based on all of our tests to date.

In addition, the foams all look and feel high quality. Amerisleep uses a specialized plant-based poly foam that has an open cell design.

This foam helps keep the mattress cooler, but also provides plenty of pressure relief.

In our pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 1.24. A PSI of 2.0 is considered a high pressure point and we measured nowhere near those levels. While we do see more pressure in the hips and shoulders while lying on the side of the body, these levels of pressure are still very well restrained.

When we look at the total picture of objective pressure mapping tests, material specs, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find pressure relief to be more than sufficient.

How firm is the AS2?

The Amerisleep AS2 has a medium-firm feel and a firmness level of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

Firmness Chart 6

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Amerisleep AS2 has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The AS2 is equipped with a 7.0” support foam layer. This is 0.9” less thick than the average support layer thickness of 7.9”, based on all of our tests to date. Nevertheless, this didn’t seem to meaningfully impact the support dynamic.

The mattress is available in a single firmness, medium-firm feel. This firmness creates sufficient support, pressure relief, and comfort such that it’s appropriate to the needs of most sleeper body types and sleeping positions.

Amerisleep As2 Sinkage No Cover
Amerisleep As2 Sinkage No Cover

The AS2 uses a zoned poly foam layer in the core of the mattress. This layer is cut with channels to help create more support where the body needs it, while still maximizing pressure relief.

Lastly, the foams all look and feel high quality. Amerisleep uses a proprietary poly foam they call “Bio-Pur”, which is a plant-based poly foam with a more open cell structure.

The Cover

The cover of the AS2 is the same cover that we’ve seen on other Amerisleep mattresses, including the AS3 or AS5 Hybrid.

The thin cover, named the Refresh Cover, is designed for optimal cooling as it converts your natural body heat into far infrared energy.

It is designed to increase blood circulation and speed up muscle recovery.

The Comfort Layer

Beneath the cover is the comfort layer, made up of two layers of foam. On top, we have a 2.0″ memory foam (blue) followed by a 3.0″ transitional poly foam (white).

Product Evolution

The AS2 was released from Amerisleep in 2018. Since its launch, there have been no major design changes made to the mattress. Even the cover looks nearly identical to the original cover launched in 2018.

It’s unclear exactly what year the change occurred, but at some point during the last several years, Amerisleep changed their manufacturer from FXI to Future Foam.
