Our Verdict
Both GhostBed and Purple mattresses are well-known brands, but they have some critical differences. GhostBed manufactures foam, hybrid, and memory foam hybrid mattresses. Meanwhile, Purple mattresses are a bit more of a specialty design. All Purple mattresses use the patented Purple grid material, which qualifies them as a “specialty mattress” in our tests. The base of Purple mattresses can be either support foam or pocketed coils.
Both GhostBed and Purple have the same firmness range—Medium (5) to Medium-Firm (6.5 out of 10). If you’re exclusively looking for a soft or firm mattress, it’s unlikely that you’ll be satisfied with either of these brands. But for medium or medium-firm mattresses, both companies have something to offer.
Regarding price, GhostBed has a significantly lower price tag, with an average mattress price of only $1,242 for a queen mattress. Purple, on the other hand, has an average price of $2,199. This is a difference of $957 for a queen-sized mattress. If the higher price is backed by higher performance, this could be a non-issue.
But that’s not what we’re seeing here. In the case of GhostBed vs. Purple, GhostBed has the higher overall performance, 8.68, compared to only 8.31 as Purple’s average performance level. We’ve tested many Purple mattresses over the years and noted a drop in performance of their newer collections compared to older ones.
At the end of the day, GhostBed will likely provide better performance and a lower price, but if you’re exclusively looking for the particular feel of the Purple grid, Purple could still be an option.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?
The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.
Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.
Between GhostBed and Purple, the two top recommendations are Ghostbed Luxe Hybrid and Purple.
Best GhostBed
GhostBed Luxe Hybrid

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: Medium-Firm (6)
The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid mattress that uses a thick quilted cover, poly foam, pocketed coils, and support foam. It has a medium-firm feel with deep sinkage and low bounce, giving it a plush, luxury feel. Its score of 9.15 ranks it among the top 11% of all mattresses tested to date, and its $1,699 price is only 14% higher than average. It scored exceptionally well in Cooling and Pressure Relief, making it a great option for sleepers of all sleeping positions and most body weights.
Best Purple
Purple

Type: Specialty
Firmness: Medium (5)
The Purple is a 9.5″ specialty mattress made with their unique elastic polymer grid and multiple layers of poly foam. This patented grid material is the top-most layer and what sleepers will experience when lying on the mattress. The Purple has a medium feel with moderate sinkage and very high bounce. It is $1499 for a queen and has a performance in the top 29% of all mattresses tested. While not perfect, it did earn 10/10 scores for cooling, motion transfer, and response time. It has a medium feel (5 out of 10 firmness rating), which is a touch softer than the average mattress.
When you look at these two models side-by-side, they couldn’t be more different.
For starters, the GhostBed Luxe Hybrid is a full 4.5″ taller/thicker than the Purple. This extra material adds to both the comfort and support of the overall experience of the mattress. While bigger isn’t universally better, the Luxe Hybrid achieved a perfect 10/10 for pressure relief, where the Purple only scored a 9.0.
The Purple mattress is not without its merits. It scored a 10 for cooling and motion transfer. This was enough to make up for other categories and earn an above-average score of 8.88. However, the GhostBed Luxe Hybrid was no slouch in those areas and earned a considerably higher performance score of 9.15.
Fortunately for Purple, the Purple mattress is more affordable than the Luxe Hybrid, with a queen-size cost of $1,499. This is just about average (average being 1,490), whereas the GhostBed Luxe Hybrid is most likely out of reach of some sleepers budgets at $1,699 for a queen size.
Ultimately, the feel of these mattresses are going to be drastically different. The Purple mattress offers a unique experience that some undoubtedly love, but, objectively, it is more of a floating sensation on top of the mattress, rather than in it. The GhostBed Luxe is going to provide that plush, enveloping feel that side sleepers will especially love.

Firmness
Looking at all available mattresses we’ve tested, GhostBed ranges in firmness from 5 to 6 out of 10, and Purple mattresses range from 5 to 6.5 out of 10.
Neither brand has a particularly wide range of firmness options. Rather, they opt to specialize in this incredibly popular medium to medium-firm feel, which is suitable for the vast majority of sleepers.
If you prefer something distinctly soft or firm, you’ll have to look at other brands than GhostBed or Purple. Though the Purple Flex is the closest you can get to a firm mattress on this list.
Check the table below to see the details of each mattress.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test
When we compare the cooling performance of the 3 mattresses from each brand, a clear winner emerges.
Purple mattresses have better cooling. From the 3 mattresses, they averaged a cooling score of 9.3. GhostBed models also performed well with an average of 9.0.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding cooling.
| Cooling Test | Score | Baseline | Max. Temp. | Ending Temp. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | 8.0 | 74.7° | 91.0° | 80.4° |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | 10 | 73.9° | 90.3° | 77.9° |

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.
GhostBed Signature Hybrid
Purple
GhostBed Luxe Hybrid
Purple Restore Plus
GhostBed Luxe Foam
Purple Restore Premier
The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.
By this mark, both GhostBed and Purple are exceptional. Each brand had at least one mattress that scored a maximum 10/10 in our tests. For GhostBed, this was the GhostBed Luxe Hybrid. For Purple, this was the Purple mattress.
We see the lack of a pocketed coil system negatively impacted the all-foam luxe model, but it still managed an excellent score (9.0). The GhostBed Signature does have coils, but lacks other cooling design features that come with the higher-tier models, such as the enhanced, cool-to-the-touch cover.
The use of the Purple grid in all of their mattresses is a big factor in their strong cooling performance, even if their thicker models lacked a perfect score. This patented elastic grid is highly breathable and resistant to heat retention.
At the end of the day, this is a fantastic showcase of cooling performance from both GhostBed and Purple. However, Purple takes the win, with no models receiving less than an excellent 9.0 score.
Sinkage Test
Sinkage is a preferential factor, so no measurement is objectively good or bad. However, knowing a mattress’s sinkage depth can greatly inform the type of feel that it offers.
From this 3v3 comparison, we can generally say that Purple offers less sinkage than your typical mattress, and GhostBed offers more than average. The Purple model with the deepest sinkage is the Purple mattress at 2.24, and this measurement is just about average compared to all mattresses tested to date.
The mattress with the most sinkage is the GhostBed Luxe Foam, which comes as no surprise given its ultra-thick, 6″ comfort layer.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sinkage.
| Sinkage Test | Sinkage Feel | Sinkage Depth |
|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | Moderate | 2.23″ |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | Deep | 2.49″ |
| GhostBed Luxe Foam | Very Deep | 2.72″ |
| Purple | Moderate | 2.24″ |

GhostBed Signature Hybrid

Purple

GhostBed Luxe Hybrid

Purple Restore Plus

Purple Restore Premier

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.23″.
Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Purple Restore Plus (1.99″) and Purple Restore Premier (1.82″) both have sinkage depths that are considered minimal.
Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and a greater contouring hug. For deeper sinkage, opt for the GhostBed Signature Hybrid (2.23″), GhostBed Luxe Hybrid (2.49″), GhostBed Luxe Foam (2.72″), Purple (2.24″).
Motion Transfer Test
Motion transfer is a difficult category to score well in. Between the two brands, the 3 GhostBed models achieved the lowest motion transfer.
Based on our accelerameter data, the GhostBed mattresses had an average motion intensity (acceleration range) of 7.90 m/s². This equates to an average score of 8.7.
On the other hand, Purple averaged an acceleration range of 8.62 m/s² and an average score of 8.0.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.
| Motion Transfer Test | Score | Acc. Range |
|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | 8.0 | 9.34 m/s² |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | 8.8 | 7.66 m/s² |
| GhostBed Luxe Foam | 9.2 | 6.69 m/s² |

The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.
GhostBed Signature Hybrid
Purple
GhostBed Luxe Hybrid
Purple Restore Plus
GhostBed Luxe Foam
Purple Restore Premier
The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.
By this measure, Purple generally performed below average. However, the Purple mattress was the model that measured the lowest motion transfer and earned a 10/10 score.
The combination of the hyper-elastic grid and foam layers isolates and/or dissipates energy extremely well. However, the Purple Restore Plus and Purple Restore Premier both have coil units, and this vastly increased the amount of motion allowed to transfer from one side to the other.

The best GhostBed mattress for motion transfer was the GhostBed Luxe Foam. While not perfect, the all-foam construction was effective at deadening bounce and limiting energy from making it to the other side of the bed.
Ultimately, GhostBed is the best pick for those sharing a bed and looking to avoid disturbing one another with basic movements. However, the Purple mattress shouldn’t be overlooked as a great mattress in this respect.
Response Test
When it comes to response time, Purple takes the win over GhostBed by a large margin.
Each of the 3 Purple models in this comparison scored a perfect 10/10 for response time, demonstrating the fastest time to reform back to shape that we can measure.
GhostBed models were more typical of what you’d expect from mattresses that use traditional foam. They earned an average response time score of 7.9.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.
| Response Test | Score | Mostly Recovered | Completely Recovered |
|---|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | 8.4 | 0.3 seconds | 1.6 seconds |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | 8.5 | 0.4 seconds | 1.0 seconds |

GhostBed Signature Hybrid
Purple
GhostBed Luxe Hybrid
Purple Restore Plus
GhostBed Luxe Foam
Purple Restore Premier
The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8.
By this measure, GhostBed can safely be described as slower than average. Based on the fairly quick “mostly recovered” measurements, it shouldn’t be a huge problem, but those long, “fully recovered” times could be more problematic for sensitive sleepers.
As stated earlier, the Purple mattress, the Purple Restore Plus, and the Purple Restore Premier all scored the max 10/10 score in this category.
The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid is the fastest model from the brand, but it is still below average with a score of 8.5.
In the end, it is clear that the Purple design is extremely quick to respond to your body, and you should never experience a “stuck” sensation on one of their mattresses. GhostBed models will feel noticeably slower and less lively by comparison.
Bounce Test
Next, let’s talk about bounce. This is another preferential factor that doesn’t have a score. But instead, this metric gives sleepers an idea of how lively and springy a mattress will be to move around on.
On average, the Purple models generally have very high levels of bounce with a bounce depth + rebound measurement of 11.5″.
Meanwhile, GhostBed mattresses are substantially less bouncy. On average, they have a bounce measurement of 6.6″; that’s a huge difference.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.
| Bounce Test | Bounce Feel | Bounce Height |
|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | Low | 7.31″ |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | Low | 6.92″ |
| GhostBed Luxe Foam | Very Low | 5.54″ |
| Purple | Very High | 12.79″ |

The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.
GhostBed Signature Hybrid
Purple
GhostBed Luxe Hybrid
Purple Restore Plus
GhostBed Luxe Foam
Purple Restore Premier
The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.77″. So not only are the GhostBed models less bouncy than Purple, they have relatively low bounce in the grand scheme of mattress design.
The Purple mattress and the Purple Restore Plus have very high levels of bounce, which slightly exceeds my ideal maximum (12″). The Purple Restore Premier is still higher than average, but not by much. Many sleepers would find this model to be a good sweet spot in terms of bounce.
The large amount of foam, memory foam especially, has a large hindering effect on bounce for the GhostBed models. The GhostBed Luxe Foam is especially thick and dead feeling. Again, this may very well be to your preference, but it has an effect on other areas of performance.
Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically creates a higher level of motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.
Edge Support Test
When we look at edge support between these two brands, we see a complex picture of performance.
On the one hand, GhostBed models are consistently excellent in regard to edge support. They managed an average score of 9.0.
On the other hand, the Purple models averaged only 8.3, but two of their mattresses scored at the outstanding performance level.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.
| Edge Support Test | Score | Sitting Sinkage | Lying Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | 9.4 | 3.25″ | Excellent |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | 8.6 | 4.50″ | Excellent |

GhostBed Luxe Foam

Purple Restore Premier

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7.
So it would be a mistake to call Purple mattresses lesser because of their lower average score. It is more accurate to say that their higher-tier models, which use coil units, are phenomenal, while the basic Purple mattress is mediocre.
For GhostBed, it is as easy as saying they have great edge support across the board. The GhostBed Luxe Hybrid was the lowest-scoring mattress due to deeper-than-average sitting compression, but its lying performance was excellent.
Ultimately, both brands know how to make an edge with fantastic support, and it may depend on which tier you’re able to afford in order to attain it.
Sex Test
Now, for something more fun, let’s talk sex performance. For this, we use a weighted formula that includes several factors. Once again, it’s not even close. Purple takes the win for having the best sex performance by a wide margin.
The 3 Purple mattresses have an average sex score of 9.2 compared to the GhostBed models that averaged a 7.5. This is the largest difference in score yet.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.
| Sex Test | Sex Score | Bounce | Edge Support | Noise | Pressure Relief | Cooling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | 7.8 | 7.0 | 9.7 | 10 | 9.0 | 8.0 |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | 7.5 | 6.8 | 8.1 | 10 | 10 | 10 |
| GhostBed Luxe Foam | 7.1 | 5.9 | 9.1 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 |
| Purple | 8.8 | 10 | 4.1 | 10 | 9.0 | 10 |
| Purple Restore Plus | 9.9 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
| Purple Restore Premier | 8.8 | 8.4 | 9.7 | 10 | 9.0 | 9.0 |
The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. Even GhostBed’s highest-performing model of the 3, the GhostBed Signature Hybrid, only earned a 7.8.
On the other hand, the Purple Restore Plus earned a near-perfect 9.9. The Purple mattress and the Purple Restore Premier still earned above-average scores of 8.8 each.
This is unsurprising given the results of the bounce section, which showed extremely high bounce for Purple and very low bounce for GhostBed.
Bounce isn’t absolutely everything here, but higher bounce is generally better for less-strenuous intimacy. Ultimately, Purple mattresses will have a noticeable advantage in this area over other models, and GhostBed mattresses will be a little more tiring.
Pressure Relief Test
For a comparison of pressure relief, we see GhostBed outperforming Purple in this category.
The 3 GhostBed models earned an average pressure relief score of 9.7. Meanwhile, the Purple models earned an average score of 9.0.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.
| Pressure Relief Test | Score | Comfort Layer | Support Layer |
|---|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | 9.0 | 5.50″ | 7.00″ |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | 10 | 7.00″ | 7.00″ |

This is another category where the Purple models performed identically, with each scoring a 9.0. This is largely due to their consistent use of the Purple Grid. We do see some design variations, such as the inclusion of a poly foam layer on the Purple Restore Plus.
In our view, the grid simply doesn’t create enough pushback for heavier bodies. Therefore, lighter-weight sleepers may experience exceptional pressure relief, but heavier bodies will push through the grid and experience too much sinkage and/or contouring hug.
The materials included in each mattress are documented in the images below.

GhostBed Luxe Foam

Purple Restore Premier

The GhostBed Luxe Foam and GhostBed Luxe Hybrid models both earned perfect 10/10 scores for pressure relief. This is not only due to the extra material but the added variety of material in their comfort layers, not to mention the high quality of foam material as well.
Finally, the plush quilted covers are a fantastic addition that truly takes these models to the next level for pressure relief.
Even the GhostBed Signature Hybrid performed above average, as it shares many of the same characteristics as the more expensive luxe models.
Ultimately, both Purple and GhostBed mattresses have excellent pressure relief. GhostBed simply has the thicker, more complex design that is more than sufficient at relieving pressure.
Off-Gassing Test
Next, let’s take a look at the smell after unboxing each mattress. As we compare the two brands, GhostBed comes out on top. However, neither brand is amazing in this category.
For GhostBed, they averaged an off-gassing score of 8.2 and an average off-gassing duration of 6.3 days. This is less than a week, and what we’d call a reasonable amount of time to complete off-gassing after unboxing.
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.
| Off-Gassing Test | Score | Initial Smell | Smell Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| GhostBed Signature Hybrid | 7.5 | Strong | 9 days |
| GhostBed Luxe Hybrid | 8.6 | Strong | 5 days |
| GhostBed Luxe Foam | 8.6 | Strong | 5 days |
| Purple | 8.9 | Strong | 4 days |
| Purple Restore Plus | 7.2 | Strong | 10 days |
| Purple Restore Premier | 2.8 | Strong | 26 days |
The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6.8 days.
Purple mattresses averaged a score of 6.3 and a duration of 13.3 days. At nearly 2 weeks, sleepers trying to enjoy their new mattress will probably be a little annoyed.
However, it was the thicker, more expensive models (Purple Restore Plus and Purple Restore Premier) that took longer than average. The Purple mattress (the thinnest one at 9.5″) took the least amount of time to complete off-gassing.

In summary, GhostBed is pretty consistent with limiting the off-gassing duration to around a week, if not under. Meanwhile, Purple mattresses can take an exceedingly long time to stop smelling, depending on the model you purchase.
Company
Finally, let’s discuss the company policies that come with purchasing from one of these brands.
GhostBed and Purple have a nearly identical trial period of 101 nights and 100 nights, respectively. They also both offer free shipping and make their mattresses in the USA.
From there, the differences are quite large. GhostBed offers a warranty period that extends all the way to 25 years, but Purple only offers up to 10 years for their warranty.
Finally, with GhostBed, all returns made within the trial period window are free. With Purple, they recently added a fee that ranges from $150 for the lower-tier models, $250 for the mid-tier models, and up to $350 for their most expensive line (this is the Rejuvenate line, which we have not tested yet).
Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding company policies.
| Company | GhostBed | Purple |
|---|---|---|
| Score | 9.4 | 7.2 |
| Trial Period | 101 nights | 100 nights |
| Warranty | 25 years | 10 years |
| Shipping | $0 | $0 |
| Returns | $0 | $150 – $350 |
| Country of Origin | USA | USA |
To date, we have tested 391+ mattresses from 103 different brands. The average trial length is 175 nights, and the average warranty is 14 years, excluding 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
GhostBed offers sleepers nearly everything a reasonable modern consumer could want: free shipping, free returns, and a near-lifetime warranty, while Purple isn’t quite as generous.
As we already discussed, the average price of a Purple mattress is already quite a premium compared to GhostBed and the majority of other brands. Adding a return fee on top of that doesn’t feel great from a consumer standpoint.
