Are Puffy Mattresses Good For Back Pain?

Derek Hales

Updated

Yes. Puffy mattresses are generally considered good for back pain, with overall scores that are slightly above average (the one exception is the Puffy Monarch, which has an overall score slightly below average).

Puffy mattresses have thicker comfort layers and excellent pressure relief scores, based on our tests. The Puffy Lux and Puffy Royal have an overall score that is better than average, as well as 10/10 pressure relief scores, and thicker-than-average comfort layers (4.5″ – 8.5″ thick).

While these mattresses certainly struggle in some areas, like off-gassing and sex, Puffy has consistently exceptional performance in pressure relief.

The Puffy Cloud is the model that has the best overall score, with the most well-rounded performance. But if your focus is on relieving back pain, the Puffy Lux or Puffy Royal models are a better option, with the additional downside of higher motion transfer.

It is important to note that none of the Puffy mattresses we’ve tested (Cloud, Lux, Royal, and Monarch) have a firm feel. In fact, they all have a medium firmness level (5-5.5, where 10 is the most firm). If you prefer a particularly firm mattress to address your back pain, Puffy mattresses won’t be for you.

That said, all Puffy mattresses have plenty of material to support bodies in all sleeping positions and body weights up to 350 lbs.
