Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Organic Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the 7 best organic mattresses, we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have a strong focus on organic materials and sustainable business practices.

When selecting the best organic mattress, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, materials used, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to be made of a high percentage of organic materials. For latex specifically, we want to see GOLS certifications.
  • Had to have a performance score of 8.59 or higher.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.

Outliers that met the criteria above, but were still excluded for other various reasons are listed below.

Organic Mattress Certifications

There are a number of different certifications that a mattress can earn to qualify their mattress as “organic”. Here is a quick glossary of some of the most popular certifications, what they mean, and which mattresses earn the title.

  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): This certification verifies that mattresses and textiles are composed of no less than 70% certified organic natural fibers, encompassing every stage from processing and manufacturing to packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution.
  • Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS): This certification guarantees that the latex used contains no harmful chemicals.
  • Greenguard and Greenguard Gold: These certifications ensure that each mattress hits the benchmark for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Saatva Latex Hybrid Material Layers
9.48 Overall Score
Tested With Scoring System 1.2
9.0 Cooling
10 Motion Transfer
10 Response Time
10 Edge Support
9.4 Sex
9.0 Pressure Relief
10 Off-Gassing
9.4 Company

Best For

  • Outstanding edge support for sitting (3.00″) and lying
  • Extremely low motion (3.13 m/s²) and high sex score make it great for couples
  • White glove delivery: free set up and haul away of old mattress

Considerations

  • Could have better cooling
  • Excellent pressure relief, but could have more comfort material
  • Sinkage is minimal (1.85″) so it won’t envelop sleepers in comfort material

Our Verdict

The Saatva Latex Hybrid is a 12″ latex hybrid designed with a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, GOLS-certified zoned latex foam, and an 8″ pocketed coil unit made of recycled steel.

This mattress comes in a single firmness level of 6.5 out of 10. This is considered a medium-firm feel that is ideal for most sleepers of average body weights and all sleeping positions.

The Saatva Latex Hybrid has a floating feel with minimal sinkage that Saatva themselves describe as “buoyant”. The coil unit mixed with latex foam provides high bounce, which makes it extremely easy to move around.

In our performance tests, the Saatva earned an overall score of 9.48, making it the highest-scoring latex hybrid we’ve tested to date. It excels in most performance categories but there is still room for improvement in cooling and pressure relief.

The Latex Hybrid costs $2,095 for a queen-size, which is 37% more expensive than the average latex hybrid. Saatva markets itself as a luxury brand and their prices follow suit, but who are we to argue? Their materials are high-quality, certified, and have created the highest-scoring latex hybrid we’ve reviewed so far.

  • Outstanding cooling performance with hole-punched organic latex
  • Virtually no odor on arrival and zero days waiting for it to off-gas
  • Slightly firm feel, 7 out of 10 feel

Considerations

  • Less than stellar edge support with below-average sitting compression (4.5″)
  • Thinner overall design (11″)
  • Extremely bouncy feel at 14.91″ of measured bounce

Our Verdict

The Birch Original mattress is an 11″ latex hybrid designed with an organic cotton cover, GOLS-certified latex foam, and a pocketed coil unit. The factory they’re made in is Fair Trade certified.

The Birch Original only offers a single option, which is a 7 out of 10. This is a slightly firm feel. For a softer feel, check out the Birch Luxe, which shares many similarities but has a thicker softer cover for a medium-firm feel (6 out of 10).

With that firmer feel, the Birch has a minimal sinkage (2.00″), but far more bounce (62% higher than average). This makes for a bouncy feel that won’t cradle or overly envelop your body.

In our performance tests, the Birch earned the second-highest performance score for organic mattresses (tied with Zenhaven) with a 9.44. This puts it within the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date.

For those on a tighter budget, the Birch is far more affordable at $1,499 for a queen. This is not the cheapest mattress on this list, but it is 2% less expensive than the average latex hybrid. All things considered, the Birch is a fantastic value for those looking for exceptional cooling and a slightly firmer feel.

Best For

  • Flippable design, medium feel + slightly firm fee
  • Extremely low levels of motion transfer (nearly half the average)
  • 365-night trial period with a lifetime warranty

Considerations

  • Pressure relief is excellent, but it may not be suitable for those over 250 lbs.
  • Much higher price than the other organic mattresses on this list
  • Lowest sex score on this list

Our Verdict

The Zenhaven mattress is a 10″ latex foam mattress designed to be slept on both sides. It is essentially 9″ of GOLS-certified latex foam topped on either side with a 0.5″ organic cotton cover.

One side of the Zenhaven has a slightly firm feel with a firmness rating of 7.5 out of 10. The other side has a medium feel and a firmness rating of 5 out of 10.

The mattress offers minimal sinkage on either side— 1.44″ and 1.77″. Bounce levels are moderate at 8.40″. Together these provide a floating feel with a generalized contour and hug. Because of its all-foam design, you’ll never hit a “floor” of support material that can make other thin mattresses unpleasant.

In our performance tests, the Zenhaven is tied with the Birch as the second-highest organic mattress. Zenhaven is the #1 best-performing all-latex mattress we’ve tested to date.

The Zenhaven costs $2,945 for a queen, which is $1,205 more than the average latex foam mattress price (114% higher). Both its price and performance are on the top-end of what we’ve seen to date. So if it fits your budget and you want an all-latex design, this is a fantastic choice.

Best For

  • Outstanding cooling with a breathable cover and hybrid design
  • Excellent pressure relief despite less material than average
  • Fantastically well-rounded performance

Considerations

  • Edge support while sitting has room for improvement
  • Heavier weighted bodies may not love the medium firm feel
  • $99 return fee

Our Verdict

The Nolah Natural is an 11″ latex hybrid made up of GOLS-certified latex foam, zoned pocketed coils made from recycled steel, and an organic cotton cover. The comfort layer includes 2″ of softer latex with a transitional support latex to ease bodies into the support coils.

This mattress is available in a single firmness—5 out of 10 with a medium feel.

The Nolah Natural has much deeper levels of sinkage than most mattresses on this list. At 2.55″ (19% deeper than average), it maintains a high degree of responsiveness so you’ll never feel stuck. It has high bounce (11.76″), which is right on the edge of my 8-12″ ideal range.

The Nolah Natural earned a performance score of 9.42, which puts it just behind the top 3 choices on this list. However, it is ranked among the top 8% of latex hybrids and the top 3% of all mattresses tested to date.

Its excellent performance also comes with a lower price tag. At $1,365 for a queen mattress, the Nolah is 11% less than the average latex hybrid. Altogether, this is one of the best values for an organic mattress on the market.

Considerations

  • Thinner profile may not be suitable for those over 250 lbs
  • Only 100 night trial period
  • Deep sinkage of 2.48″

Our Verdict

The Avocado Eco is a 10″ latex hybrid that boasts being the most affordable organic certified mattress we’ve tested. They have a OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, and they use GOTS-certified cotton/wool, GOLS-certified latex foam, and an innerspring unit made with recycled steel.

The Eco only has a single firmness option that is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This is a medium-firm feel and it is suitable for a wide array of sleepers.

The mattress offers slightly deep sinkage levels (15% more than average) and very high bounce. It has very high bounce (32% higher than average) that is just above my ideal range, which makes the surface easy to move around on and aids in sex performance.

In our performance tests, the Avocado Eco earned an overall performance score of 9.26. This score ranks it among the top 16% of all latex hybrids tested to date. Specifically, it excels in sex, motion transfer, and off-gassing.

The Avocado Eco has a budget-friendly price of $1,299 for a queen-size mattress. This is 6% less than the average mattress price and 15% less than the average latex hybrid. Altogether, the Eco is a great value option that offers high bounce, deep sinkage, and is best for back and stomach sleepers.

  • Height and firmness levels can be customized
  • Outstanding pressure relief with adjustable latex layers
  • Option to split firmness options down the middle for couples

Considerations

  • Extremely high motion transfer levels (13.34 m/s²)
  • Pricier latex foam mattress than average
  • 90-night trial period, shorter than 179-night trial period (average)

Our Verdict

The Sleep EZ Organic Latex mattress is a latex foam mattress made up of several latex layers. These layers are designed to be stacked/arranged to hone in on a sleeper’s preferred feel. In addition, the mattress is available in multiple heights (7″, 9″, 10″, or 13″).

Sleep EZ uses both Dunlop and Talalay latex foam, of which the former is GOLS-certified. Their mattresses have the OEKO-TEX certification, and their covers are made from Joma wool.

Depending on what type of latex layers you choose, how many, and how they are arranged, you can end up with firmness options that range from soft to extra firm.

The Sleep EZ version we tested had a 10″ thickness and created moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. Although the feel may vary based on the firmness and thickness you select.

From a performance perspective, the EZ had an overall score of 8.73, which places it in the top 40% of all mattresses tested.

For a queen mattress, the Sleep EZ can vary quite a bit, but its range is between $1,449 (for the 7″ version) or up to $2,299 (for the 13″ version). It’s hard to place a value on the level of customization Sleep EZ offers. If that feature is what you’re looking for on a latex mattress, it is a great option.

Best For

  • Value pick—under $1K for organic latex
  • Fast material response time
  • Fantastic cooling performance with limited heat retention

Considerations

  • 15% more motion transfer than average
  • Only 2.5″ comfort layer may not be thick enough for heavier sleepers
  • Slightly longer off-gassing (7 days)

Our Verdict

The Awara mattress is an 11.5″ latex hybrid mattress. It is made of 2.0″ of hole-punched latex foam followed by a 9.0″ pocketed coil support layer. A thin cover wraps the mattress and gives the mattress a modern feel.

This mattress is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, which gives it a medium-firm feel.

When tested, the Awara had moderate levels of sinkage and bounce, giving the mattress a balanced feel. But it still has the generalized contour that is typical of latex mattresses.

The Awara earned an overall score of 8.59, ranking in the bottom 48% of all mattresses tested to date. That being said, the overall score is still 0.06 higher than the average mattress. But score aside, where this mattress really shines is the price tag.

A queen Awara is only $949, making it 32% less than the average Latex Hybrid. If you’re looking for latex, this is a savings of $582 (for a queen mattress). This is also the lowest-priced organic mattress on this list, making it our top pick for sleepers on a budget.
