Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Memory Foam Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best memory foam mattresses we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

When selecting the best memory foam mattress, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, materials, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to be classified (by our testing parameters) as a “memory foam” or “memory foam hybrid
  • Had to have a performance score of 8.42 or higher.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.

In addition to these inclusion rules, we also:

  • Limited the list to the best 4 performing memory foam hybrids by score and the best 4 performing memory foam (all foam) mattresses by score
  • Included 1 budget memory foam hybrid and 1 budget memory foam (all foam) mattress. These budget-friendly memory foam mattresses were chosen because they were less than $1,000 for a Queen and represent the best performance per dollar.

Outliers that met the criteria above, but were still excluded for other various reasons are listed below.

MattressScoreReason
Amerisleep AS59.40Brand duplicate; performs slightly better than the AS3, but because of the soft feel it may not be ideal for all sleepers
Amerisleep AS28.87Brand duplicate; performance does not beat that of the Amerisleep AS3

Best For

  • Great value, 10% cheaper than the average memory foam hybrid
  • Outstanding performance in 6 out of 10 categories
  • Exceptionally good pressure relief and edge support when sitting and lying

Considerations

  • Classic low bounce from memory foam is not the best for sex
  • Slower material response, but not terrible
  • The 14″ thickness may not match low-profile aesthetics

Our Verdict

The Glacier Apex is a 14.25″ memory foam hybrid mattress that incorporates two types of memory foam followed by poly foam, transitioning into a pocketed coil unit. These foams feel modern and are effective at providing better cooling while maintaining great pressure relief.

Unsurprising for a memory foam mattress, the Apex has only moderate sinkage and fairly low bounce.

The Glacier Apex has a single option for firmness, which is a medium-firm feel with a rating of 6 out of 10.

From our performance tests, the Apex emerged with the highest score of any memory foam mattress tested to date. At 9.27, its score is the #1 best memory foam hybrid and is within the top 7% of all mattress types.

A queen-size Apex mattress costs $1,399, which is a savings of $153 or 10% less, compared to the average memory foam hybrid price. Not only is the Glacier Apex the best-performing memory foam hybrid we’ve tested to date, but the price being less than average makes it feel like an absolute steal.

  • Nearly half the amount of motion transfer compared to the average
  • Robust edge support for sitting (3.75″) and lying
  • Excellent cooling performance, which is rare for memory foam

Considerations

  • Somewhat slower material response, but still pretty fast
  • Off-gassing time takes 8 days, longer duration than average (6.4 days)

Our Verdict

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is a 12″ memory foam hybrid that outperforms its all-foam counterpart as well as many mattresses on this list. It features a simple and high-quality 3″ memory foam atop an 8″ pocketed coil unit with a 1″ layer of support foam at the base.

The Amerisleep has a modern memory foam design where we measured deeper sinkage and higher bounce levels. While retaining a classic memory foam sensation, it also has better cooling and faster response time.

The AS3 Hybrid has a medium feel, with a firmness level of 5 out of 10. If you prefer a softer mattress, consider the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid, or for a firmer option, choose the Amerisleep AS2 all-foam mattress.

In our performance tests, the AS3 Hybrid has an overall score of 9.25, placing this mattress in the top 9% of all mattresses tested to date. If we look exclusively at memory foam hybrids, that score places it within the top 4%.

A queen AS3 Hybrid is $1,449, making it 7% less expensive than the average memory foam hybrid. Considering its high performance, the AS3 Hybrid is an exceptional value and a great choice overall.

Best For

  • Outstanding cooling with a cool-to-the-touch cover
  • Extremely low levels of motion transfer (3.74 m/s²)
  • Excellent pressure relief for all sleeping positions

Considerations

  • Slightly slower material response altogether, but still pretty fast
  • The 14″ thick profile may be too thick for a low-profile aesthetic
  • Shorter 120-night trial period (average is 178 nights)

Our Verdict

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14″ memory foam hybrid that makes many of our lists. Its comfort layer incorporates copper-infused memory foam and a phase-change cover for enhanced cooling. Its high-quality support coils provide excellent support in all sleeping positions.

The coils also give it high levels of bounce. Paired with its moderate sinkage, you will not feel stuck or overly enveloped by this mattress.

The Bear Elite Hybrid has 3 available firmness options. It comes in soft (4.5), medium-firm (6), or slightly firm (7.5).

The performance for the Bear Elite puts it just barely behind our first two picks at 9.24. Still, this score is within the top 9% of all mattresses we’ve tested to date.

A queen-size Bear Elite costs $1,624, which is 4% more than the average memory foam hybrid mattress. That’s only a difference of about $60 and still provides a fantastic value, especially if you’re looking for a memory foam hybrid with the best cooling performance.

  • Outstanding cooling performance (10/10)
  • Super supportive edge for sitting and lying due to perimeter-reinforced foam

Considerations

  • Much higher motion than most memory foam mattresses, 15% more than average (considering all mattress types)
  • Heavier sleepers may need more than 2.5″ of comfort material

Our Verdict

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is an 11.5″ thick hybrid mattress with memory foam and pocketed coils. It has a balanced feel with a plush pillow-top cover.

It offers a minimal level of sinkage and an extremely high level of bounce, which gives it a very lively feel to its surface. You won’t have to worry about feeling overly enveloped or stuck in the mattress.

The mattress comes in a single firmness option that is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This gives it a medium-firm feel.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid has an overall performance score of 9.24, which ranks it among the top 9% of all mattresses tested to date. Compared to other memory foam hybrids, it is tied for 3rd place.

At $1,645, it’s 6% more expensive than the average memory foam hybrid, but still a solid value. After testing over 320+ mattresses, Saatva consistently performs at the higher end and this model is no exception. If motion transfer isn’t a huge issue for you, then this is a fantastic mattress.

  • Budget price, under $1K

Considerations

  • Slightly slower material response time
  • Low level of bounce (6.15″), 35% less than average
  • $99 return fee if the mattress ends up not working out

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid is a 14.5” hybrid mattress made of a combination of poly foam, memory foam, pocketed coils, and support foam. It has a cooling cover that provides softness and helps to limit heat retention.

This mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a balanced feel, but the transitional memory foam does keep motion and movement to a minimum.

The CopperFlex Pro is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and with a medium-firm feel.

In our performance tests, the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid earned an overall score of 9.06, making it the highest-ranking memory foam hybrid that also falls below $1,000. Looking at all mattresses tested to date, the CopperFlex Pro ranks in the top 17%, comparing the 320+ mattresses tested to date.

That’s why it is our value pick out of all memory foam hybrids. Priced at only $999 for a queen mattress, this is 36% less expensive than the average memory foam hybrid. For the best bang for your buck and a memory foam feel, the CopperFlex Pro is the mattress to beat.

Best For

  • Lively feeling surface with a super fast material response
  • Outstanding edge support for sitting, lying, and sex
  • Exceptional pressure relief with an ultra-thick comfort layer (6.25″)

Considerations

  • Much higher motion transfer than most memory foam mattresses
  • Sex will be more strenuous due to lower bounce
  • More expensive than the other picks on this list

Our Verdict

The Saatva Contour5 is a 12.25″ memory foam mattress designed with high-quality memory foam, transitional poly foam, and support foam. This is our pick for the best all-foam memory foam mattress, which also ships uncompressed with white-glove delivery and setup.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and a very low level of bounce. If you want to avoid a sinking feeling or are concerned about feeling trapped in the foam layers, the Contour5 could be the right choice for you.

The Contour5 is available in two firmness levels: medium-firm (6) and firm (8). The medium-firm option is generally more suitable for most sleepers, while the firm version may be a better option for heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach.

From a performance standpoint, this mattress falls within the top 9% of all memory foam mattresses with a score of 8.88. Across all mattresses, it is within the top 27% based on all 320+ we’ve tested so far.

However, its price is another story. Saatva, with its white glove delivery, high-end materials, and premium branding, gives its mattresses a higher price. At $2,695, the Contour 5 is nearly double the price of the average mattress and 140% more than the average memory foam mattress.

If you have it within your budget, the Saatva Contour5 is a fantastic memory foam mattress choice.

Best For

  • Extremely low motion transfer (2.66 m/s²)
  • Excellent pressure relief and cooling
  • Available in three firmness levels, good for a wide range of sleepers

Considerations

  • Sex performance is hindered by low bounce
  • Slightly slower material response time
  • 10″ profile isn’t ideal for heavier weighted sleepers (especially 250+ lbs.)

Our Verdict

The Novosbed mattress is a memory foam mattress with a little less material than our previous Saatva Contour 5 pick, but with nearly as good of performance. With 4″ of memory foam (in 3 distinct layers), it manages to breathe well and have a relatively fast material response.

The mattress offers a high degree of contour and hug albeit with only minimal sinkage. It also has a fairly low level of bounce.

One of the best features of a memory foam mattress in this price range is its availability in multiple firmnesses. The Novosbed comes in three firmness options —Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8).

The Novosbed scored an 8.87 in our performance tests, which puts it within the top 11% of all memory foam mattresses tested to date (28% compared to all mattress types).

While its performance may be a bit lacking in a few distinct areas, its price is hard to beat. At $999, the Novosbed is $131 cheaper than the average memory foam mattress and 28% less expensive than average, considering all mattress types tested. For those looking for a great memory foam mattress that doesn’t break the bank, this is it.

  • Side sleepers looking for deeper sinkage and contour
  • Top-tier pressure relief with organic, plush euro-cotton cover
  • Ships uncompressed, no off-gassing period upon arrival

Considerations

  • Lacks great edge support, especially for sitting (6.25″ edge compression)
  • Less lively surface with slow material response and very low bounce
  • Weak edges and very low bounce generate a mattress with worse sex performance

Our Verdict

The Loom & Leaf mattress is a 12″ luxury memory foam mattress made up of gel foam, memory foam, and a support foam base. This is my personal mattress that my wife and I sleep on every night (and have been since 2017).

For fans of slide sleeping, the mattress offers extremely deep sinkage. On top of that, there is a dramatic contour and hug you can feel around your body. On the other hand, this is achieved to the detriment of bounce (only 4.72″ total).

The Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness levels—Medium (5.5) or Firm (8). Heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach will likely do best with the Firm version of Loom & Leaf.

For performance, the Loom & Leaf scored just below the others with a score of 8.81. This easily puts it within the top 33% of all 320+ mattresses tested to date. Specifically compared to memory foam mattresses, it is within the top 15%.

Loom & Leaf comes with a premium price tag. At $2,395, it is the second most expensive mattress on our list. However, it truly is a luxury feel. Those with the appropriate budget who are looking for next-level pressure relief would be well-suited to Loom & Leaf.

Best For

  • Incredibly good cooling performance, especially for a memory foam mattress
  • Motion transfer is well below average (7.06 m/s²)
  • Ultra-thick (7.0″) comfort layer helps provide outstanding pressure relief

Considerations

  • Very slow response time
  • Back and stomach sleepers may find sinkage too extreme (3.06″)
  • Good but not great edge support when seated or lying at or near the edge of the mattress

Our Verdict

The Nectar Ultra is an ultra-thick memory foam mattress made up of a 15″ combination of memory foam, poly foam, and support foam. It is a powerhouse for cooling and pressure relief performance.

It has extremely deep sinkage and very low levels of bounce, which give it a feeling of being cradled or enveloped by the memory foam. With a polarizing feel, it can also be quite challenging to move around, more so than any other mattress on this list.

The Ultra is only available in a medium firmness level, which is a 5 out of 10 rating on the firmness scale.

With a total score of 8.71, performance on the Nectar Ultra is mixed, but it’s still good enough to be within the top 26% of memory foam mattresses.

The price of a queen-size Nectar Ultra is $1,799, which is 59% more than the average memory foam mattress, costing sleepers an extra $669. All things considered, this mattress could still be well worth the money if deep sinkage, dramatic contour, outstanding cooling, medium firmness, and pressure relief are your top priorities.

Best For

  • Excellent cooling performance with infusion of gel in memory foam
  • Solid edge support for sitting and lying
  • Fantastic price ($649)

Considerations

  • Slower material response
  • Good but not great pressure relief
  • Higher motion transfer than ideal for light sleepers

Our Verdict

The Nectar Classic is a memory foam mattress that’s 11.5″ thick. Comprised of gel memory foam, poly foam, and support foam, this the best budget memory foam mattress we’ve tested to date.

The Nectar combines minimal sinkage with moderate levels of bounce to create a surface that is still easy to move around on. It won’t envelop you with memory foam, but it still has that traditional contour and hug, if not a bit limited.

Only one firmness option is available for the Nectar Classic—a medium-firm feel with a rating of 6 out of 10.

In our performance tests, the Nectar Classic is a far cry from the top of this list at 8.42. In fact, it puts it within the bottom 33% of all mattresses tested to date. However, for memory foam models, specifically, this is an average score.

The reason the Nectar Classic makes this list is for its budget-friendly price of $649. This is well below all other options worth considering (based on performance) and it is a great choice for those with low budgets.
